Introduction: The winning works of the Scientific Council of the Israel Medical Association (IMA) Award for Excellence in Basic Sciences for 2024.

The European Academy of Neurology (EAN) was founded in May 2014 as the scientific society of all neurologists and all national neurological societies in Europe. The creation of EAN was based on the conscious decision of two predecessor societies (the European Federation of Neurological Societies and the European Neurological Society) to have a unique society for this continent with its 53 countries according to the World Health Organization and with the EU as the most important continental political decision level. In this report, the important milestones and the motivations of the decision-makers during the first 10 years are described. The development of the annual congress, the broad educational agenda, and the scientific groundwork including the European guidelines for the practise of neurology are described. Collaboration with and work for the national neurological societies is an important task for EAN. The political representation of neurology in Brussels and collaboration with the scientific societies of neighbouring medical disciplines and patient organizations are other major tasks on the agenda of the organization. EAN's goal is to reduce the burden of neurological diseases and to be the "home of neurology" in Europe for physicians, patients, and society. EAN communicates and interacts with its members, patients, partners, politicians, and the public through different channels. EAN is the owner of the scientifically independent European Journal of Neurology. Background and Purpose: To acknowledge the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the formation of the European Academy of Neurology (EAN), the World Federation of Neurology was invited to contribute its perspective on the formation of the EAN and its activities over the past decade., Methods: This article is based on the experiences of the author in several functions with the European Union of Medical Specialists, the European Federation of Neurology and the European Neurological Society and with the World Federation of Neurology as a trustee since 2009. This article is supported by the author's own archive as well as by several publications., Results: The formation of the EAN was influenced by the activities of the two main predecessor societies, the European Neurological Society and European Federation of Neurology, which left an imprint on the structure of the EAN. The newly formed EAN underwent rigorous structural and organizational changes and has been acting as a successful and independent regional society, expanding increasingly in worldwide activities., Conclusion: The EAN, with its 47 member countries, strong democratic leadership and structure, is an excellent example of a regional society with expanding global influence that uses its advocacy skills to influence and improve the structure of neurology in Europe., (© 2024 The Authors. Aim: The Royal College of Radiologists (RCR) recognizes the importance of addressing differential attainment, bridging existing disparities, and fostering diversity and equity., Materials and Methods: A joint-faculty reverse mentoring (RM) pilot launched from July 2023 to January 2024. Participation was voluntary, mentors (trainees) from ethnic minority backgrounds and mentees (RCR officers) were recruited across the UK. Mentoring pairs engaged in regular meetings focused on sharing lived experiences and informal discussions. Data were collected through prepilot and postpilot surveys, virtual question polls at induction meeting, and written reports. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis for quantitative and qualitative data, respectively., Results: Eight matched pairs met predominantly online, on average 4 times over 6 months. Discussions covered a wide range of topics exploring systemic biases and professional development. Expectations expressed were to learn from others' experiences and achieve personal and professional growth. The prepilot survey revealed that 50% of respondents had experienced or witnessed racial discrimination, with only 28.5% feeling capable of supporting colleagues facing challenges. By mid-pilot, meaningful connections were established, allowing mentors to share experiences, and foster safe spaces. The postpilot survey results indicated that 90% of respondents felt better equipped to support colleagues facing challenges related to protected characteristics. Key lessons included understanding cultural differences, resilience, and empowering participants to drive change., Conclusions: The exchange of perspectives and experiences between individuals from diverse backgrounds and levels of expertise enhanced mutual understanding and inclusivity. This dynamic process has the potential to catalyze positive change across diverse domains, underlining its significance in shaping a more equitable postgraduate training landscape., (Copyright © 2024 The Royal College of Radiologists. The current sociopolitical landscape continues to infiltrate our house of surgery, leaving faculty, staff, and learners challenged by uncertainty while introducing downstream interference to cohesive health care delivery for our patients. National surgical associations must cultivate an ethos of unity and intellectual solidarity within the surgical community, thereby reinforcing a foundation for productive and respectful discourse. Laboratory medicine plays a crucial role in patient care, contributing to approximately 70 % of clinical decisions. In collaboration with clinicians, laboratory medicine specialists perform analyses that are useful for diagnosis, screening and prevention. Laboratories are known for their efficiency, which is reached through a rigorous quality system. However, errors can occur, especially given the complexity of the total testing process. These errors may lead to severe consequences, such as incorrect diagnoses or delays in treatment. Errors can occur at every stage of the total testing process, those related to the pre-analytical phase being the most prevalent. To reduce medical errors related to laboratory processes, it is essential to provide training for medical and paramedical staff, optimize production automation, and leverage technological advancements. These considerations have led to the creation of a French Working Group on Sources of Errors in Laboratory Medicine, under the aegis of the French lean society of clinical chemistry and laboratory medicine (Société Française de Biologie Clinique - SFBC). The objectives of this working group are to produce an educational handbook on sources of errors in laboratory medicine, provide training for clinical chemists, and conducting applied research projects to better understand the mechanisms behind specific errors. Ultimately, the aim is to minimize errors and enhance the quality of laboratory tests.

Aim: To identify barriers between health and communication in oncology in order to promote the best possible practice. The areas of communication to be focused on are communication directly with the patient, communication within the scientific community, and communication with the media., Material and Methods: A working group including eminent experts from the national mass media, healthcare system, and patients' advocacy has been established on behalf of the Italian Association of Medical Oncology (AIOM), with the aim of developing suitable recommendations for the best communication in oncology. A literature search has been conducted selecting primary studies related to the best practices applied to communication in oncology. Subsequent to having identified the most representative statements, through a consensus conference using the RAND/University of California Los Angeles modified Delphi method, the panel evaluated the relevance of each statement to support useful strategies to develop effective communication between oncologist physicians and patients, communication within the scientific community, and communication with media outlets, including social media., Results: A total of 292 statements have been extracted from 100 articles. Following an evaluation of relevance, it was found that among the 142 statements achieving the highest scores, 30 of these have been considered of particular interest by the panel., Conclusions: This consensus and the arising document represent an attempt to strengthen the strategic alliance between key figures in communication, identifying high-impact recommendations for the management of communication in oncology with respect to patients, the wider scientific community, and the media., (© 2024. Background: Diversity, equity, and inclusion have been an intentional focus for SAGES well before the COVID-19 pandemic and the coincident societal recognition of social injustices and racism. Longstanding inequities within our society, healthcare, and the surgery profession have come to light in the aftermath of events that rose to attention around the time of Covid. In so doing, they have brought into focus disparities, injustices, and inequalities that have long been present in the field of surgery, selectively affecting the most vulnerable., Methods: This White paper examines the current state of diversity within the field of surgery and SAGES (Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons) approach and effort to pave the way forward to meaningful change. We delineate the imperative for diversity, equity, and inclusion for all. By all, we mean to be inclusive of the diversity of gender and sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, geography, sex, and disability in the field of surgery., Results: SAGES is an organization that lives at the intersection of education and innovation. It has a vital role in assisting the surgical profession in addressing these issues and needs and being a force alongside others for sustained and necessary change. SAGES can only realize these goals through a commitment across all aspects of the organization to embed diversity, equity, and inclusion into our very fabric., Conclusion: True diversity, equity, and inclusion within a surgical organization is vital for its longevity, growth, relevance, and impact. Unfortunately, the absence of DEI limits opportunity, robs the organization of collective intelligence in an environment in which its presence is critical, contributes to health inequities, and impoverishes all within the society and its value to all with whom it interfaces. SAGES is an organization that lives at the intersection of education and innovation. It has a vital role in assisting the surgical profession in addressing these issues and needs and being a force alongside others for sustained and necessary change. SAGES can only realize these goals through a commitment across all aspects of the organization to embed diversity, equity, and inclusion into our very fabric. A workshop of the Special Committee on Measures for Transition from Pediatric to Adult Health Care, the Japanese Society of Neurology was held to discuss various issues and practices involved in healthcare transition. The following points were addressed: (1) the history of, and issues involved in, promoting support for patients requiring medical care, (2) cooperation between pediatric medical centers and university hospitals, (3) collaboration between pediatrics and neurology in medical and rehabilitation facilities, and (4) a questionnaire survey of members of the Japanese Society of Neurology. The reasons for extreme difficulties in pediatric-adult healthcare transition for patients with neurological diseases, especially those who require continuous intensive medical care over a long period of time, include the difference in the operating systems of pediatric and adult departments, in addition to the difference in the diseases treated during childhood and adulthood. For holistic transition support, it is necessary to strengthen cooperation not only among medical professionals, but also among multiple professions, as well as between local communities and government.

This manuscript highlights the impressive advocacy work that members of the American Academy of Pediatrics have achieved and serves to inspire pediatric health care providers of all specialties to pursue such efforts beyond the acute physical need of the child. Informed by the almost unimaginable unmet need for cardiac surgery in the developing regions of the world, leading surgeons, cardiologists, editors in chief of the major cardiothoracic journals as well as representatives of medical industry and government convened in December 2017 to address this unacceptable disparity in access to care. The ensuing "Cape Town Declaration" constituted a clarion call to cardiac surgical societies to jointly advocate the strengthening of sustainable, local cardiac surgical capacity in the developing world. The Cardiac Surgery Intersociety Alliance (CSIA) was thus created, comprising The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS), the American Association for Thoracic Surgery (AATS), the Asian Society for Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery (ASCVTS), the European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery (EACTS) and the World Heart Federation (WHF). The guiding principle was advocacy for sustainable cardiac surgical capacity in low-income countries. As a first step, a global needs assessment confirmed rheumatic heart disease as the overwhelming pathology requiring cardiac surgery in these regions. Subsequently, CSIA published a request for proposals to support fledgling programmes that could demonstrate the backing by their governments and health care institution. Out of 11 applicants, and following an evaluation of the sites, including site visits to the 3 finalists, Mozambique and Rwanda were selected as the first Pilot Sites. Subsequently, a mentorship and training agreement was completed between Mozambique and the University of Cape Town, a middle-income country with a comparable burden of rheumatic heart disease. The agreement entails regular video calls between the heart teams, targeted training across all aspects of cardiac surgery, as well as on-site presence of mentoring teams for complex cases with the strict observance of 'assisting only'. In Rwanda, Team Heart, a US and Rwanda-based non-governmental organization (NGO) that has been performing cardiac surgery in Rwanda and helping to train the cardiac surgery workforce since 2008, has agreed to continue providing mentorship for the local team and to assist in the establishment of independent cardiac surgery with all that entails. This involves intermittent virtual conferences between Rwandan and US cardiologists for surgical case selection. Five years after CSIA was founded, its 'Seal of Approval' for the sustainability of endorsed programmes in Mozambique and Rwanda has resulted in higher case numbers, a stronger government commitment, significant upgrades of infrastructure, the nurturing of generous consumable donations by industry and the commencement of negotiations with global donors for major grants. Extending the CSIA Seal to additional deserving programmes could further align the international cardiac surgical community with the principle of local cardiac surgery capacity-building in developing countries., (© The Author(s) 2024. Background: The Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) has long recognized and championed increasing diversity within the surgical workplace. SAGES initiated the Fundamentals of Leadership Development (FLD) Curriculum to address these needs and to provide surgeon leaders with the necessary tools and skills to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in surgical practice. In 2019, the American College of Surgeons issued a request for anti-racism initiatives which lead to the partnering of the two societies. The primary goal of FLD was to create the first surgeon-focused leadership curriculum dedicated to DEI. The rationale/development of this curriculum and its evaluation/feedback methods are detailed in this White Paper., Methods: The FLD curriculum was developed by a multidisciplinary task force that included surgeons, education experts, and diversity consultants. The curriculum development followed the Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation and Evaluation (ADDIE) instructional design model and utilized a problem-based learning approach. Competencies were identified, and specific learning objectives and assessments were developed. The implementation of the curriculum was designed to be completed in short intervals (virtual and in-person). Post-course surveys used the Kirkpatrick's model to evaluate the curriculum and provide valuable feedback., Results: The curriculum consisted of interactive online modules, an online discussion forum, and small group interactive sessions focused in three key areas: (1) increasing pipeline of underrepresented individuals in surgical leadership, (2) healthcare equity, and (3) conflict negotiation. By focusing on positive action items and utilizing a problem-solving approach, the curriculum aimed to provide a framework for surgical leaders to make meaningful changes in their institutions and organizations., Conclusion: The FLD curriculum is a novel leadership curriculum that provided surgeon leaders with the knowledge and tools to improve diversity in three areas: pipeline improvement, healthcare equity, and conflict negotiation. Objective: Trainees and Fellows of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) work in complex interpersonal and organisational environments. Engagement in supervision can be a helpful way for trainees and Fellows to achieve interpersonal, professional, and organisational success. Supervision comes in many forms depending on the stage and state of one's career. An awareness of different supervision models is relevant to trainees' understanding of what is expected of them and their supervisors in their work and educational contexts. Objectives: Describe the characteristics of the different cardiology medical residencies in Latin America., Method: Cross-sectional study that aims to evaluate the characteristics of cardiology residencies in Spanish-speaking countries of Latin America, through self-administered electronic surveys., Results: Three hundred seven residents of 147 residences were surveyed. Mean age was 31 years and 63% were male. Ninety eight percent carry out their training in the capital city. The average total training time is 4.8 years. Forty four percent complete their residency in internal medicine prior to starting cardiology, and 10% have no prior training. In cardiology training is 3 years in most countries. Fifty four percent present academic activities every day and 16% only once or less, consisting of theoretical classes (93%), clinical cases (85%), bibliographic workshops (69%), and writing scientific papers (68%). Supervision is carried out by the chief resident (45%), resident coordinator (44%), resident instructor (27%) or the department head (54%), while 2.6% do not present supervision. The main rotations were echocardiography (99%), hemodynamics (96%), coronary unit (93%), and electrophysiology (92%). Residents highlighted the need to improve academic activities (23%) and scientific production (12%)., Conclusions: There are important differences in the academic and practical training between the residences of the different countries of America.
