Abstract

Some disinfectants have been demonstrated to be effective against surface mold growth and/or viruses responsible for the spread of common respiratory infections. Antimicrobial efficacy of green cleaning products has generally not been established in these areas. In this survey, the author found that out of 27 products approved by Green Seal as hard surface cleaners, 26 do not claim antimicrobial capability. While some contained hydrogen peroxide, a compound with limited spectrum disinfection capabilities, only one was registered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as antimicrobial. The null hypothesis that the storage medium and sterilization method have no effect on dentin bond strengths is studied. Lower bond strength was found in bovine inscisors stored in sodium hypochlorite (NaClO), and sterilization with the autoclave showed negative effects on bond strength. Following decades of corporate strategy promoting common household bleach as essential for peoples' health and happiness, a use for bleach was finally discovered in 1986 that actually achieved life-saving proportions for a certain population: injection drug users in preventing the spread of AIDS. Since then, substantial promotional efforts have surfaced -- corporate, governmental, and community-based -- to downplay or obstruct the public definition of bleach as a major AIDS prevention weapon. An analysis is offered of four competing social constructions of bleach that have emerged since 1986: bleach as a apublic health breakthrough; bleach as a liability; bleach as an endorsement for drug abuse; and bleach as a social policy copout.
