1. An explainable longitudinal multi-modal fusion model for predicting neoadjuvant therapy response in women with breast cancer

Abstract: Abstract Multi-modal image analysis using deep learning (DL) lays the foundation for neoadjuvant treatment (NAT) response monitoring. However, existing methods prioritize extracting multi-modal features to enhance predictive performance, with limited consideration on real-world clinical applicability, particularly in longitudinal NAT scenarios with multi-modal data. Here, we propose the Multi-modal Response Prediction (MRP) system, designed to mimic real-world physician assessments of NAT responses in breast cancer. To enhance feasibility, MRP integrates cross-modal knowledge mining and temporal information embedding strategy to handle missing modalities and remain less affected by different NAT settings. We validated MRP through multi-center studies and multinational reader studies. MRP exhibited comparable robustness to breast radiologists, outperforming humans in predicting pathological complete response in the Pre-NAT phase (ΔAUROC 14% and 10% on in-house and external datasets, respectively). Furthermore, we assessed MRP’s clinical utility impact on treatment decision-making. MRP may have profound implications for enrolment into NAT trials and determining surgery extensiveness.

Abstract: The study conducted in 'Quebrada del Diablo' ravine, located in the Tacna region, Peru, reveals high levels of vulnerability in the human settlements of this area. Vulnerabilities were identified in environmental, physical, economic, social, educational, and cultural aspects using the methodology proposed by the National Institute of Civil Defense. Additionally, sedimentary, morphodynamic, and geodynamic hazards levels were evaluated through thematic maps. Factors contributing to vulnerability include solid waste pollution, the construction of substandard housing, lack of preparedness in risk prevention, and limited awareness of the dangers present in the area. Particularly, El Mirador Human Settlement showed a very high vulnerability, while La Florida Association exhibited a high vulnerability. These results align with the geological threats identified in the area, such as flows, falls, and collapses. Therefore, it is important to take into account the sedimentary, geodynamic and morphodynamic characteristics in determining vulnerability and exposure. The study emphasizes the need to implement prevention and risk reduction measures, as well as proper planning and community participation to address the challenges in this high-risk area.

Abstract: The development of vaccinations has been game-changing in the ongoing effort to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. Until now, adverse effects are being reported at low frequency, including thrombocytopenia and myocarditis. Careful monitoring for any suspicious symptoms and signs following vaccination is necessary. We report a case of hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) after mRNA COVID-19 vaccine in a 23-year-old female with ulcerative colitis. Diagnosis was made according to HLH-2004 criteria and the patient was treated with dexamethasone with response. Our report aimed to draw attention to the potential relation between COVID-19 vaccines and HLH and the necessity of continued surveillance, especially in at-risk populations such as those with underlying immune dysregulation.

4. Diagnosis of Bowel Endometriosis Using Endoscopic Ultrasound-guided Fine Needle Aspiration

Abstract: Endometriosis is a relatively common gynecological condition in women of reproductive age. The rectosigmoid region is the most commonly affected segment when the gastrointestinal tract is involved. A differential diagnosis of colorectal neoplasia is difficult because of the similar clinical, endoscopic, and radiology findings. A 42-year-old female presented with abdominal distention and was subsequently diagnosed with a large bowel obstruction in the rectum. A temporary colostomy was performed, and endoscopy revealed a rectal mass obstructing the rectum. The biopsy showed normal mucosa, and it was difficult to exclude rectal malignancies even after the imaging workup. Endoscopic ultrasound demonstrated a hypoechoic lesion below the rectal mucosa, and fine needle aspiration confirmed the diagnosis of bowel endometriosis. Bowel endometriosis is a challenging diagnosis. Endoscopic ultrasound- guided fine-needle aspiration is useful for acquiring adequate samples for histological confirmation and a definitive diagnosis of bowel endometriosis.

5. Late Onset of Pneumocystis jirovecii Pneumonia in Kidney Transplant: How Long is too Long in Opportunistic Infection Prophylaxis?

Abstract: Pneumocystis jirovecii (PJ) opportunistic infections occur in immunocompromised patients impacting significantly hospitalizations and mortality. Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX) is universally used as prophylaxis of Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PJP) and therefore, this infection is rare condition in solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients. We present a case of a 46-years-old male, who received an ABO-incompatible transplant with prior desensitization protocol with plasmapheresis, rituximab, and anti-CMV immunoglobulin. IgG anti-B title pre-desensitization was 1:128. The patient had 6 ABDR mismatches, without HLA antibodies, and the CDC crossmatch for T and B cells was negative. Both recipient and donor were CMV positive (D+/R+). The patient received induction immunosuppression with corticosteroids, basiliximab, calcineurin inhibitor, and mycophenolate mofetil. Immediate kidney function was verified, and three additional plasmapheresis sessions were performed. At discharge serum creatinine (sCr) was 1.38 mg/dL, but kidney function declined during the first 6 months (sCr 2.5 mg/dL). Urinalysis was unremarkable. A kidney biopsy was declined by the patient. Unit protocol maintained the prophylaxis for PJP and cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection with TMP-SMX and valganciclovir. The patient was admitted to the emergency department 20 months after the transplant with respiratory symptoms and was diagnosed with PJP. Bronchoalveolar lavage fluid was also positive for CMV. Intensive care unit (ICU) admission was necessary due to clinical deterioration, with subsequent good evolution without mechanical ventilation. At discharge, prophylaxis with TMP-SMX and valganciclovir was maintained for more than six months. Here we discuss the late onset of PJP, and the main risk factors related to severe infection. Transplant subgroups in which longer PJP prophylaxis could be beneficial and the indication to re-start PJP prophylaxis is still under discussion.

Abstract: Older to older living kidney transplantation is an acceptable alternative to avoid dialysis, improve quality of life and maintain favorable long-term outcomes of patients with end-stage kidney disease. However, the management of these patients is complex and the acceptance of older donors and recipients to kidney transplantation remains controversial. The older recipients usually have several comorbidities that may complicate the postoperative course and increase the risk of end-stage kidney disease. We present a clinical case of living kidney transplantation between an older donor and recipient, both over 70 years old, who evolved to a stage 3 chronic kidney disease, without proteinuria, hypertension, or other complications, three years after transplantation. Our case reinforces favorable outcomes in older living transplantation, both for recipient and donor, as has been demonstrated in several published studies.

Abstract: INTRODUÇÃO: A Rede CUF em 18 de março, disponibilizou o Hospital CUF Infante Santo (HCIS) como hospital de referência para os doentes com COVID-19 na área da grande Lisboa. O internamento do doente não crítico (IDNC) ficou a cargo de uma equipa médica dedicada (EMD) constituída por médicos do Cluster Tejo, sob coordenação da Medicina Interna. Este estudo reporta as principais características demográficas e clínicas da população internada no IDNC. MATERIAL E MÉTODOS: Estudo retrospetivo analisando os doentes admitidos entre 27 de março e 7 de maio de 2020, no IDNC. Os critérios para diagnóstico de COVID-19 basearam-se na confirmação laboratorial e/ou critérios de diagnóstico imagiológicos. Excluíram-se da análise os doentes inicialmente suspeitos, mas cujo diagnóstico final encontrado foi outro. Clinicamente, o doente não crítico foi definido como tendo um Modified Early Warning Score (MEWS) entre 0-2. Os dados foram coletados do processo clínico eletrónico e da base de dados criada para seguimento destes doentes. Apresentam-se as características demográficas, clínicas, exames complementares, terapêutica e resultados. RESULTADOS: Incluíram-se 44 doentes, média de idades 67 anos, 52,3% homens. Divididos em grupos de acordo com a apresentação, com pneumonia em 75%, os restantes com outra apresentação. Proveniência: domicílio 81,8%, residência sénior 11,4% e outro hospital 8%. Fatores de risco para doença mais grave foram: Idade > 65 anos, 56,8%, hipertensão arterial 59%, doença respiratória crónica 15,9%, obesidade 15,9%, neoplasia ativa 13,6%, diabetes 11,4%, cardiopatia isquémica 11,4%, insuficiência cardíaca 6,8%, imunossupressão 6,8%, com índice de comorbilidades de Charlson média de 3.6. Agravamento clínico significativo com necessidade de escalar cuidados em três doentes (6,8%), em dois (4,5%) com ventilação mecânica invasiva, adicionalmente registado um óbito (2,3%). Demora média de internamento 10 dias, três (6,8%) doentes foram transferidos para outro hospital e 40 (91%) tiveram alta. DISCUSSÃO: A casuística apresentada representa o primeiro grupo de doentes não críticos internados com COVID-19 na Rede CUF da Região de Lisboa. Houve evolução e mortalidade intra-hospitalar abaixo do expectável para as características desta população, nomeadamente perante a presença de fatores de risco para doença mais grave e elevado índice de comorbilidades. CONCLUSÃO: A interpretação dos resultados obtidos fica condicionada ao pequeno tamanho da amostra e às incertezas ainda existentes nesta nova doença.

10. Effects of senolytic drugs on human mesenchymal stromal cells

Abstract: Abstract Background Senolytic drugs are thought to target senescent cells and might thereby rejuvenate tissues. In fact, such compounds were suggested to increase health and lifespan in various murine aging models. So far, effects of senolytic drugs have not been analysed during replicative senescence of human mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs). Methods In this study, we tested four potentially senolytic drugs: ABT-263 (navitoclax), quercetin, nicotinamide riboside, and danazol. The effects of these compounds were analysed during long-term expansion of MSCs, until replicative senescence. Furthermore, we determined the effect on molecular markers for replicative senescence, such as senescence-associated beta-galactosidase staining (SA-β-gal), telomere attrition, and senescence-associated DNA methylation changes. Results Co-culture experiments of fluorescently labelled early and late passages revealed that particularly ABT-263 had a significant but moderate senolytic effect. This was in line with reduced SA-β-gal staining in senescent MSCs upon treatment with ABT-263. However, none of the drugs had significant effects on the maximum number of population doublings, telomere length, or epigenetic senescence predictions. Conclusions Of the four tested drugs, only ABT-263 revealed a senolytic effect in human MSCs—and even treatment with this compound did not rejuvenate MSCs with regard to telomere length or epigenetic senescence signature. It will be important to identify more potent senolytic drugs to meet the high hopes for regenerative medicine.

11. A Rare Presentation of Ogilvie's Syndrome

Abstract: Ogilvie’s syndrome or acute colonic pseudo-obstruction is characterized by massive colon dilation in the absence of mechanical obstruction or toxic megacolon. The phenotype associated with secretory diarrhoea is rare and is related to increased potassium channel activity in the colon, inducing excessive potassium loss, with increased sensitivity to normal serum aldosterone levels. The recommended therapy is potassium-sparing agents. We present the case of an 85-year-old patient who was admitted at the emergency department with prostration, abdominal distension and diarrhoea, corresponding to functional colonic dilation precipitated by severe hypokalaemia. Resolution of the condition only occurred after spironolactone was administered for suspected primary hyperaldosteronism, which was not proved as the patient showed normal aldosterone serum levels. The pathophysiological mechanism of abnormal potassium secretion in this scenario corresponds to ‘relative hyperaldosteronism’ caused by increased sensitivity of colonocytes to aldosterone.

13. Perianal Paget's disease - A diagnosis to consider

Abstract: Extramammary Paget's disease is a rare cutaneous malignancy affecting areas with a high concentration of apocrine glands. The authors present a 77-year-old male followed in the General Surgery consultation due to anal pruritus complaints with an evolution of around 20 years and recent lower gastrointestinal bleeding. A colonoscopy was requested and the patient was observed by Gastroenterology team in this context. The objective examination showed an erythematous-whitish plaque with well-defined, slightly exudative and verrucous limits in the perianal region (Fig. 1). Definitive diagnosis was possible by biopsy of the referred lesion carried out by Dermatology, and the histological findings were compatible with Paget's disease: intraepithelial infiltration by large atypical neoplastic cells and hypochromic halo and positive immunostaining for cytokeratin 7. Perianal Paget's disease, often underdiagnosed, may be associated with colorectal neoplasms. We present this case due to its rarity, in order to draw attention to this diagnosis.

Abstract: BACKGROUND AND AIMS Living donor kidney transplantation (LDKT) provides the best outcomes of all renal replacement modalities, including survival and quality of life. Studies on the association between pre-donation estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and graft outcomes have yielded inconsistent results. Two eGFR thresholds are generally used to accept or deny a donor (respectively, ≥90 and METHOD This is a unicentric retrospective observational study that included the LDKT pairs submitted to transplant between 2008 and 2017. We gathered clinical data, including donor's comorbidities, immunological features of the transplant, the occurrence of acute rejection episodes in the first year, and graft eGFR during the follow-up period. For statistical purposes, we split the donors in three groups: group 1, with eGFR ≥90 mL/min/1.73 m2; group 2, eGFR RESULTS We studied 210 donor-recipient pairs. The average age at the time of transplant was 48.0 ± 10.6 years for donors and 41.3 ± 13.3 years for recipients. Pre-donation eGFR was 100.1 ± 14.2 mL/min/1.73 m2 and most donors (78%) were in group 1 (eGFR 105.9 ± 9.4 mL/min/1.73 m2). We found two independent predictors of death censored graft failure: the occurrence of rejection episode(s) during the first year (HR: 4.99, CI: 1.44–17.26, P = 0.011) and having a donor from group 3 (HR: 5.14, CI: 1.49–17.75, P 0% (HR: 3.802, CI: 1.387–10.489, P = 0.010) and donor from group 3 (HR: 3.514, CI: 1.087–11.355, P = 0.036). Abstract: BACKGROUND AND AIMS Kidney transplantation (KT) improves survival and quality of life of patients with end-stage renal disease. However, there is still an unbalance between supply and demand for kidneys. To increase the number of available grafts and reduce the waiting list for transplantation, recruitment of older living donors has expanded. This approach remains controversial for several reasons, including the impact of kidney function decline on long-term graft and recipient survival. We aimed to evaluate the impact of living donor (LD) age on recipient graft survival and on graft function decline over time. METHOD This is a Unicenter retrospective observational study that included kidney transplants of LD between 2008 and 2017. Several clinical data were analyzed, including donors’ comorbidities, immunological features of the transplant, induction immunosuppression, number of acute rejections (AR) at the first year, and the graft glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) during the follow-up period. The eGFR was calculated using the CKD-EPI equation. The LDs were classified as young ( The Kaplan–Meier curves and Cox proportional hazards multivariable regression were used for survival analysis and linear mixed regression was used to evaluate the annual slope of recipient eGFR, comparing both groups. We did not evaluate the age match between donor and recipient, as has been done in other studies, but even so, these results support the importance of increasingly encouraging KT from older living donors. It can improve the quality of life, compared to the time on dialysis and, especially for old candidates, can be the only chance to get transplanted.

18. MO971: External Validation of the Toulouse-Rangueil Predictive Model to Estimate Donor Renal Function After Living Donor Nephrectomy

Abstract: BACKGROUND AND AIMS Living donor kidney transplantation (LDKT) is the best treatment for end-stage kidney disease and is associated with better recipient outcomes than deceased donor transplantation. Living kidney donors (LKD), however, seem to be at increased risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD), which mandates a careful selection to reduce the chances of selecting a donor at risk of developing CKD. A predictive model to estimate the 1-year post-donation estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and risk of CKD was developed from a Toulouse-Rangueil cohort in 2017 [1] and has been shown to have significant correlation to the observed 1-year post-donation eGFR [2]. We aimed to externally validate this predictive tool in a cohort of patients who underwent LDKT at our center. METHOD Retrospective analysis of the 210 LKD at Centro Hospitalar Universitário do Porto from 2008 to 2017. Observed eGFR using CKD-EPI formula at 1-year post-donation was compared with the predicted eGFR using the formula developed in Toulouse-Rangueil. This predictive model is based in pre-donation eGFR and age: Postoperative eGFR (CKD-EPI, mL/min/1.73m2) = 31.71 ± (0.521 × preoperative eGFR)—(0.314 × age). Pearson correlation coefficient was used to estimate correlation between predicted and observed eGFR. Agreement was evaluated by the Bland-Altman plot. Discriminative ability to predict CKD (defined as eGFR RESULTS From 2008 to 2017, 210 LDKT were performed. Six donors were excluded from the study for lacking evaluation of eGFR at 1-year. Mean donor age was 48.1 ± 10.5. Mean pre-donation eGFR was 100.2 ± 14.1 mL/min/1.73 m2. Mean 1-year post-donation observed and predicted eGFR were respectively 70.8 ± 14.5 mL/min/1.73 m2 and 68.8 ± 9.6 mL/min/1.73 m2. Significant correlation (Pearson r = 0.66; P CONCLUSION In this external validation of the formula developed in Toulouse-Rangueil, we found it to have a good correlation, agreement and accuracy for the prediction of the donors 1-year post-donation eGFR. Moreover, a good discriminative ability was also observed with significant sensitivity and specificity, allowing for a pertinent prediction of CKD. This model may be used to assist in the evaluation of potential donors.

Abstract: The realtime follow-up of neutrino events is a promising approach to search for astrophysical neutrino sources. It has so far provided compelling evidence for a neutrino point source: the flaring gamma-ray blazar TXS 0506+056 observed in coincidence with the high-energy neutrino IceCube-170922A detected by IceCube. The detection of very-high-energy gamma rays (VHE, $\mathrm{E} > 100\,\mathrm{GeV}$) from this source helped establish the coincidence and constrained the modeling of the blazar emission at the time of the IceCube event. The four major imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope arrays (IACTs) - FACT, H.E.S.S., MAGIC, and VERITAS - operate an active follow-up program of target-of-opportunity observations of neutrino alerts sent by IceCube. This program has two main components. One are the observations of known gamma-ray sources around which a cluster of candidate neutrino events has been identified by IceCube (Gamma-ray Follow-Up, GFU). Second one is the follow-up of single high-energy neutrino candidate events of potential astrophysical origin such as IceCube-170922A. GFU has been recently upgraded by IceCube in collaboration with the IACT groups. Less stringent but more reachable targets such as isolated endoscopic (IER) or radiologic remission (IRR) may also be acceptable options in the long-term. Methods: Multicenter retrospective study including 404 CD patients evaluated by magnetic resonance enterography and colonoscopy. Five-year rates of hospitalization, surgery, use of steroids, and treatment escalation were compared between patients with TR, IER, IRR, and no remission (NR). Results: 20.8% of CD patients presented TR, 23.3% IER, 13.6% IRR and 42.3% NR. TR was associated with lower risk of hospitalization (odds-ratio [OR] 0.244 [0.111-0.538], p < 0.001), surgery (OR 0.132 [0.030-0.585], p = 0.008), steroid use (OR 0.283 [0.159-0.505], p < 0.001), and treatment escalation (OR 0.088 [0.044-0.176], p < 0.001) compared to no NR. IRR resulted in lower risk of hospitalization (OR 0.333 [0.143-0.777], p = 0.011) and treatment escalation (OR 0.260 [0.125-0.540], p < 0.001), while IER reduced the risk of steroid use (OR 0.442 [0.262-0.745], p = 0.002) and treatment escalation (OR 0.490 [0.259-0.925], p = 0.028) compared to NR. Conclusions: TR improved clinical outcomes over 5 years of follow-up in CD patients. Distinct but significant benefits were seen with IER and IRR. This suggests that both endoscopic and radiologic remission should be part of the treatment targets of CD.

Abstract: The origin of Galactic Cosmic rays (GCRs), whose spectrum extends to PeV energies, is one of the longest-standing problems in astroparticle physics. One of the main sources of GCRs are regarded to be Supernova remnants (SNRs). While SNRs are known to accelerate protons, so far there is no evidence that SNRs can accelerate CRs to PeV energies. Providing that ~10% of the parent Cosmic ray energy is converted to gamma rays, the gamma-ray spectrum extending up to ~100 TeV would be a signature of a so-called Galactic PeVatron, an object responsible for the production of protons up to the knee of the Cosmic ray spectrum. The current multi-wavelength data indicate that HESS J1809-193 is one of the most promising Galactic PeVatron candidates. So far, no firm identification on the source nature has been established as there are several possible counterparts at lower energies; one of them being SNR G11.0−0.0. We report here the results of an observational campaign performed by the MAGIC telescopes on HESS J1809-193 since 2019 in the very-high-energy gamma-ray domain (E>100 GeV). The data were obtained with the Very Large Zenith Angle (VLZA) technique, which increased the collection area significantly to about one square kilometer. Abstract: X-ray and gamma-ray binaries are systems consisting of a compact object and normally a non-degenerate companion star. Most of these sources have been shown to emit radiation in a broad frequency range, from radio up to X-rays and sometimes gamma rays. We report on recent results in very high-energy gamma rays above 100 GeV obtained by the MAGIC Collaboration for the Galactic X-ray binaries MAXI J1820+070 and 1A 0535+262, and the gamma-ray binary HESS J0632+057. Multiwavelength data at lower energies are also provided for a better contextualisation of the sources.

Abstract: QSO B0218+357 is currently the only gravitationally lensed source from which very-high-energy (VHE, &100GeV) gamma-ray emission has been detected. We report the multiwavelength monitoring observations of this source performed between 2016 and 2020 in radio interferometry, optical, X-ray and gamma-ray bands. Abstract: Blazars, together with other active galactic nuclei, are the most luminous persistent sources in our universe; and therefore a prime candidate for very-high-energy (>0.2 TeV, VHE) gamma-ray observations. For the two MAGIC telescopes, the Mrk501 galaxy is among the brightest observed blazars due to its proximity. We report a multi-wavelength and multi-messenger study of Mrk501 with data from 2017 to 2020, when Mrk501 showed a VHE flux typically below 10% that of the Crab Nebula. During this time, we performed three long observations with NuSTAR, which characterized the hard X-ray emission during three different low-activity flux levels. This Mrk501 dataset provided the unprecedented opportunity to study multi-wavelength variability and correlations with sensitive instruments during historically low X-ray and VHE gamma-ray emission (below 5% of the Crab Nebula flux in the VHE range), which could be considered as the baseline emission of Mrk501. We complemented the broadband spectral energy distributions (SED) of the identified historically low X-ray and VHE gamma-ray flux with data published by IceCube, in order to evaluate the potential existence of a hadronic component that is stable (or slowly variable), and less visible than the leptonic component that may dominate the emission during typical and flaring activity. Abstract: The high-peaked BL Lac object 1ES 0647+250 is one of the few distant blazars detected at very-high-energy (VHE, E>100 GeV) γ rays during non-flaring activity. Its redshift is still uncertain, with a recently proposed lower limit of z>0.29. This blazar was first detected by the MAGIC telescopes between 2009 and 2011 during its low state, displaying a flux of around 2% of the Crab Nebula above 100 GeV, but it has shown several periods of high activity, where the VHE γ-ray flux increased by more than one order of magnitude. The VHE spectra of four observed periods are characterized and the redshift of this source is estimated using the HE and VHE spectral shapes. The multi-wavelength data set collected from 2009 to 2020 introduced in this work will serve as the seed for further studies, including detailed studies of the broad-band spectral energy distribution for different activity levels and multi-band variability and correlation studies., PoS: Proceedings of Science, 395, ISSN:1824-8039, 37th International Cosmic Ray Conference (ICRC 2021)

Abstract: We present the first search for dark matter (DM) spectral lines in the Galactic centre (GC) region with the MAGIC telescopes. The MAGIC telescopes, located on the Canary island of La Palma (Spain), are sensitive to gamma rays in the energy range from 50 GeV to 50 TeV. MAGIC has performed indirect DM searches in various astrophysical targets, such as dwarf spheroidal galaxies and clusters of galaxies. Observations at high zenith angles significantly increase the telescopes' collection area and sensitivity for gamma rays in the TeV regime. We present the results obtained with more than 200 hours of high-zenith angle observations of the GC region with MAGIC, which allow us to probe promising heavy SUSY models, and to obtain competitive limits to the DM annihilation cross-section at high DM particle mass, compared to existing constraints. Abstract: CORONAVIRUS CRISIS MANAGEMENT AND MEANING-MAKING: STORYTELLING AND MANIPULATION IN GIUSEPPE CONTE’S PRESS CONFERENCES Leaders’ behaviour in the face of the COVID-19 crisis has attracted the attention of scholars and political analysts since the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus outside of China, where the disease manifested itself the first time. This contribution explores a particular aspect of crisis management in the Italian case: former Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte’s meaning-making. Meaning-making is one of the tasks that the literature on crisis management assigns to political leaders confronting a crisis: in order to mobilize stakeholders and citizens and counter the uncertainty produced by the crisis, they must formulate a persuasive message that explains what has happened and why, what its repercussions are, how it can be resolved. At the same time, meaning-making can also repair, protect or enhance the reputation and consensus of leaders and governments. This essay explores Giuseppe Conte’s meaning-making through the content analysis of the speeches he gave during the press conferences held between January 31 and June 3, 2020. The findings show the high level of personalization of Conte’s communication and the considerable presence in his speeches of persuasive messages and manipulative linguistic devices. In the concluding section of the article, results are interpreted in light of two hypotheses. The first one is that Giuseppe Conte’s meaning-making overall aims at narrating a sweetened reality, which puts the government and its leader in a positive light. The second one that this sweetened reality is functional to his leadership strengthening.

Abstract: Bezoars are aggregates of non-digestible material that accumulate in the gastrointestinal tract. They can be classified according to their composition, and phytobezoars (composed of vegetable or fruit fiber) is the most common type. They most often occur in patients with some risk factors, namely prior gastric surgery, neuropsychiatric, endocrine or other disorders that lead to abnormal gastric function, or poor gastric peristalsis. Bezoars may be asymptomatic but most commonly cause abdominal discomfort or pain, nausea, vomiting, fullness, difficulty in swallowing, or anorexia and weight loss. Upper GI endoscopy for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes is key in the management of bezoars.

Abstract: We report the detection of pulsed emission from the Geminga pulsar (PSR J0633+1746) with the MAGIC Telescopes. After the Crab and Vela pulsars, Geminga is the third one detected in the very high energy domain, and its estimated age of ~340 ky makes it the oldest one. The spectrum derived by MAGIC extends from ~15 GeV to 75 GeV and can be well modeled with a simple, soft power-law function. For energies below 40 GeV it overlaps with Fermi-LAT measurements. Joint fits to MAGIC and Fermi-LAT data disfavour the existence of a sub-exponential cut-off in this energy range. Our results are discussed in the framework of the outer gap accelerator model. Such power-law emission can be interpreted as the transition from curvature radiation to inverse Compton (IC) scattering of charges accelerated in the northern outer gap. The IC component is expected to continue towards higher energies. The model fails to fit the overall shape of the spectrum, indicating that a major review is required. The MAGIC Telescopes are two IACTs on the Canary Island of La Palma. In recent years they have significantly improved their performance below 100 GeV with the introduction of a novel trigger system, the Sum-Trigger-II, which halves the energy threshold of the system.

Abstract: OT 081 is a luminous blazar well known for its variability in many energy bands. The very-high-energy (VHE; E >100 GeV) gamma-ray emission from the source was discovered by MAGIC and H.E.S.S. during flaring activity in July 2016, after a trigger from the Large Area Telescope (LAT) onboard the Fermi satellite. By analysing the multiwavelength light curves andthe broadband spectral energy distribution (SED), we study the activity of the source and investigate four individual states of activity in the window from MJD 57575 to 57602. The intrinsic gamma-ray spectrum can be described by a power law with spectral indices of 3.27 ± 0.44(MAGIC)and 3.39 ± 0.58(H.E.S.S.) over energy ranges 60–300 GeV and 120–500 GeV, respectively. The combined contemporaneous high-energy (HE;E >100 MeV) through VHE SED shows curvatureand can be described by a log-parabola shape. A simple one-zone synchrotron self-Compton (SSC)model is not sufficient to describe the broadband SED. The presence of broad emission lines in the optical spectrum of the source challenges the categorisation of OT 081 as a BL Lac and, together with the emission scenarios tested, points to the possibility that the source is transitional in nature between a BL Lac and a flat-spectrum radio quasar.

Abstract: The origin of the high-energy gamma-ray emission from the Milky Way center is still unclear and debated because of the impact of systematics afflicting the measurements from current experiments. Several theories and phenomenological models attempt to explain the intricate panorama. The presence of a PeVatron in the Central Molecular Zone or in its vicinity, the contribution of the hard-component of the diffuse gamma-ray emission, and dark matter annihilation scenario are among the most promising mechanisms for describing the observed excess. The development of increasingly precise models able to reproduce the measured gamma-ray emission is the challenge for the scientific community in view of the next generation telescopes. Abstract: The discovery of the electromagnetic counterpart AT2017gfo and the GRB 170817A, associated to the binary neutron star merger GW170817, was one of the major advances in the study of gamma- ray bursts (GRBs) and the hallmark of the multi-messenger astronomy with gravitational waves. Another breakthrough in GRB physics is represented by the discovery of the highly energetic, teraelectronvolt (TeV) component in the GRB 190114C, possibly an universal component in all GRBs. This conclusion is also suggested by the hint of TeV emission in the short GRB 160821B and a few more events reported in the literature. The missing observational piece is the joint detection of TeV emission and gravitational waves from a short GRB and its progenitor. MAGIC observed the counterpart AT2017gfo as soon as the visibility conditions allowed it, namely from January to June 2018. These observations correspond to the maximum flux level observed in the radio and X-ray bands. The upper limits derived from TeV observations are compared with the modelling of the late non-thermal emission using the multi-frequency SED.

Abstract: On 14th January 2019, the MAGIC collaboration achieved the first significant detection at TeV energies of a gamma-ray burst (GRB), namely GRB 190114C. This observation sets the first experimental proof of very high energy (VHE, >~100 GeV) gamma-ray emission in GRBs, after more than 50 years from the first GRB detection and many searches with Cherenkov telescopes in the last decades. The data collected by MAGIC and by more than 20 other ground-based and space-borne instruments, spanning 17 orders of magnitude in energy, revealed a new GeV-TeV emission component in the GRB afterglow. This unprecedented multi-wavelength dataset, including VHE data for the first time, allowed a detailed study of the broadband emission. A one-zone synchrotron-self Compton scenario with internal $\gamma$-$\gamma$ absorption could be used to describe the broadband emission, using parameters compatible with those found in previous studies of GRB afterglows below the GeV energy range. This detection opened a new era in the studies of GRBs, leading to new questions such as the universality of TeV emission in different types of GRBs. In this contribution, we will present the GRB follow-up program performed by the MAGIC collaboration, which started more than 15 years ago. We will highlight the results on GRB 190114C, discuss the implications for GRB physics, and report the latest developments and the prospects for future observations of GRBs with the MAGIC telescopes.

Abstract: Dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) are among the best candidates to perform indirect searches for DM, having the highest known mass-to-light ratio and being free of astrophysical gamma-ray emitting sources. The Major Atmospheric Gamma Imaging Cherenkov (MAGIC) telescopes, located on the Canary Island of La Palma, have observed a fair amount of optimal dSphs in the recent years. This is the outcome of diversifying the observation strategy in order to avoid possible biases in target selection and to improve previous results. In this contribution we will report on new MAGIC results obtained from 52.1 hours of observation of the Draco dSph in 2018 and 49.5 hours of the Coma Berenices dSph in 2019. We will also present the results of a joint analysis of Draco and Coma Berenices dSphs with other dSphs observed by MAGIC so far. The selected dataset accounts for 354.4 hours of good quality data, resulting in one of the largest dSphs samples ever collected by an array of Cherenkov telescopes. This allows us to derive the most constraining limits from dSphs, among Cherenkov telescopes, on the WIMP annihilation cross section for different annihilation channels in the WIMP mass range 70 GeV to 100 TeV.

Abstract: The flat-spectrum radio quasar QSO B1420+326 underwent an enhanced $\gamma$-ray flux state seen by Fermi-LAT at the turn of 2019/2020. Compared to the low state both the position and luminosity of the two spectral energy distribution peaks changed by at least two orders of magnitude. The high state resulted in the discovery of the very-high-energy (>100 GeV) $\gamma$-ray emission from the source by the MAGIC telescopes. The organized multiwavelength campaign allow us to trace the broadband emission of the source through different phases of the flaring activity. The source was observed by 20 instruments in radio, near-infrared, optical, ultra-violet, X-ray and $\gamma$-ray bands. We use dedicated optical spectroscopy results to estimate the accretion disc and the dust torus luminosity. The optical spectroscopy shows a prominent FeII bump with flux evolving together with the continuum emission and a MgII line with varying equivalent width. The $\gamma$-ray flare was accompanied by a rotation of the optical polarization vector and emission of a new superluminal radio knot. We model spectral energy distributions in different flare phases in the framework of combined synchrotron-self-Compton and external Compton scenario in which the shape of the electron energy distribution is determined from cooling processes.

Abstract: A comunicação digital é um elemento essencial para as empresas, e graças ao marketing de conteúdos foi possível uma nova forma de transmissão da mensagem por parte das organizações, este tipo de comunicação é recompensada e medida com base no engagement, este elevado grau de interação com o consumidor origina a tão desejada lealdade e fidelidade dos consumidores perante a marca. Este relatório tem o intuito de aprofundar os conhecimentos do curso de marketing digital retratados no estágio realizado na agência de marketing digital, Oxy Agency, através da análise da marca pessoal Clara de Sousa Cozinha e Bricolage. O propósito deste relatório será estudar e analisar o engagement gerado através do marketing de conteúdos dos posts partilhados nas redes sociais Facebook e Instagram, por outras palavras esta oportunidade de investigação foca nas interações e comportamentos dos consumidores. A fim de completar a investigação será utilizado um método de pesquisa qualitativo, que irá auxiliar na compreensão da amostra caracterizada pelos posts e conteúdos partilhados nas redes sociais das páginas da marca Clara de Sousa Cozinha e Bricolage. No que diz respeito à análise em si e aos resultados verificados, ambas as redes sociais possuem o mesmo tipo de conteúdo nas suas páginas, no entanto a rede social com mais engagement é o Instagram, ao contrário do que se esperava, visto que o Facebook possui mais seguidores e mais publicações por mês. Os conteúdos com mais impacto nos seguidores são os posts sobre sobremesas no caso do Instagram, e na página do Facebook são os vídeos nos quais a Clara de Sousa participa, pois transmite ao público uma sensação de intimidade, autenticidade e confiança. Um dos resultados fundamentais encontrados consiste no facto da jornalista ser vista como uma media persona, por ser uma das pessoas com mais poder influenciador não só dentro da sua área profissional mas em Portugal, consegue alcançar os resultados foram do comum para a sua marca pessoal Clara de Sousa Cozinha e Bricolage, que conta com uma taxa de engagement total de 3%. Apesar dos resultados já se destacarem é sempre possível melhorar a estratégia utilizada, por isso a marca da jornalista deve focar principalmente no Instagram, que possui potencialidade de alcançar melhores resultados que o Facebook, e desse modo apostar em conteúdos de doces e bolos regularmente. This report aims to deepen the knowledge of the digital marketing course portrayed in the internship carried out at the digital marketing agency, Oxy Agency, through the analysis of the personal brand Clara de Sousa Cozinha e Bricolage. The purpose of this report will be to study and analyse the engagement generated through the content marketing of the posts shared on the social networks Facebook and Instagram, in other words, this research opportunity focuses on the interactions and behaviours of consumers. In order to complete the investigation, a qualitative research method will be used, which will help to understand the sample characterized by the posts and content shared on the social networks of the Clara de Sousa Cozinha e Bricolage brand pages. Regarding the analysis itself and the results verified, both social networks have the same type of content on their pages, however the social network with more engagement is Instagram, contrary to what was expected, since Facebook has more followers and more posts per month. The content with the greatest impact on followers is the posts about desserts in the case of Instagram, and on the Facebook page are the videos in which Clara de Sousa participates, as it conveys to the public a feeling of intimacy, authenticity and trust. One of the fundamental results found is the fact that the journalist is seen as a media persona, as she is one of the people with the most influential power not only within her professional area but in Portugal, and for that reason she manages to achieve the results were common to this personal brand Clara de Sousa Cozinha e Bricolage, which has a total of engagement rate of 3%. Despite the results already stand out, it is always possible to improve the strategy used, so the journalist's brand should focus mainly on Instagram, which has the potential to achieve better results than Facebook, and thus bet on content of sweets and cakes regularly.

Prevedere i problemi e comprenderli nella loro complessità quando si presentano, coordinare istituzioni e network complessi, gestire i flussi di informazione, prendere decisioni difficili – il tutto in situazioni di elevata incertezza – richiedono abilità che non fanno più parte del cassetto degli attrezzi dei leader mediatici. Le dinamiche di politics illustrate dagli studiosi del crisis management come Boin e t’Hart, che tendono a ostacolare il cammino verso l’elaborazione e l’implementazione di soluzioni alle crisi, se sono inevitabilmente connaturate alla politica, assumono un carattere estremo laddove la politica diviene il regno di personaggi mediatici orientati al proprio successo piuttosto che al governo dei fenomeni. Abstract: A indústria editorial é um sistema em constante mudança devido a diversos fatores, como o papel do editor, o leitor, a sociedade, o autor. As pequenas editoras, que se caraterizam neste meio por serem resistências editoriais, seguem o modelo de edição independente, distinto das grandes editoras. Este trabalho pretende entender a permanência desta linha editorial em pleno século XXI, através do legado do passado editorial, nomeadamente a Geração Beat, e da consequente manutenção e adaptação de fatores editoriais desse mesmo passado. The publishing industry is a system which is constantly evolving due to several factors, such as the role of the publisher, the reader, society, and the author. Small publishing houses which are often characterized in this environment as being editorial resistances, follow the independent publishing model, distinct from large publishing houses. This work aims at understanding the permanence of this editorial line still in the 21st century through the legacy of the editorial past, in particular the Beat Generation, and the ongoing maintenance and adaptation of a number of editorial factors from that same exact past.
