We investigated the spin excitations of magnetoelectric LiFePO4 by THz absorption spectroscopy in magnetic fields up to 33 T. By studying their selection rules, we found not only magnetic-dipole, but also electric-dipole active (electromagnons) and magnetoelectric resonances. The magnetic field dependence of four strong low-energy modes is reproduced well by a four-spin mean-field model for fields applied along the three orthorhombic axes. From the fit of magnetization and magnon frequencies, we refined the exchange couplings, single-ion anisotropies, and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction parameters. Additional spin excitations not described by the mean-field model are observed at higher frequencies. Some of them show a strong shift with the magnetic field, up to 4 cm−1 T−1, when the field is applied along the easy axis. Based on this field dependence, we attribute these high frequency resonances to the excitation of higher spin multipoles and of two magnons, which become THz-active due to the low symmetry of the magnetically ordered state.

Tuning the plasmonic response with an external magnetic field is extremely promising to achieve active magnetoplasmonic devices, such as next generation refractometric sensors or tunable optical components. Noble metal nanostructures represent an ideal platform for studying and modeling magnetoplasmonic effects through the interaction of free electrons with external magnetic fields, even though their response is relatively low at the magnetic field intensities commonly applied in standard magneto-optical spectroscopies. Here we demonstrate a large magnetoplasmonic response of silver nanoparticles by performing magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy at high magnetic fields, revealing a linear response to the magnetic field up to 30 T. The exploitation of such high fields allowed us to probe directly the field-induced splitting of circular plasmonic modes by performing absorption spectra with static circular polarizations, giving direct experimental evidence that the magneto-optical activity of plasmonic nanoparticles arises from the energy shift of field-split circular magnetoplasmonic modes.

In van der Waals heterostructures (HS) consisting of stacked MoSe$_2$ and WSe$_2$ monolayers, optically bright interlayer excitons (ILE) can be observed when the constituent layers are crystallographically aligned. The symmetry of the monolayers allows for two different types of alignment, in which the momentum-direct interlayer transitions are either valley-conserving (R-type alignment) or changing the valley index (H-type anti-alignment). Here, we study the valley polarization dynamics of ILE in magnetic fields up to 30~Tesla by time-resolved photoluminescence (PL). For all ILE types, we find a finite initial PL circular degree of polarization ($DoP$) after unpolarized excitation in applied magnetic fields. For ILE in H-type HS, we observe a systematic increase of the PL $DoP$ with time in applied magnetic fields, which saturates at values close to unity for the largest fields. By contrast, for ILE in R-type HS, the PL $DoP$ shows a decrease and a zero crossing before saturating with opposite polarization. This unintuitive behavior can be explained by a model considering the different ILE states in H- and R-type HS and their selection rules coupling PL helicity and valley polarization.

A new family of paramagnetic coordination compounds based on a diimine-pyridine pincer ligand has been prepared, using a two-step synthetic approach. The sequential introduction of identical or different transition metals (Co, Mn, Ni, Zn) afforded mono-, di-, tri- and tetranuclear clusters, whose crystal structure has been determined. Magnetic studies reveal that the metals within the trinuclear manganese cluster engage in a small ferromagnetic exchange interaction (J=0.15 K). These studies enable the design of new clusters with specific magnetic properties.

The formation of wurtzite (WZ) phase in III–V nanowires (NWs) such as GaAs and InP is a complication hindering the growth of pure-phase NWs, but it can also be exploited to form NW homostructures consisting of alternate zincblende (ZB) and WZ segments. This leads to different forms of nanostructures, such as crystal-phase superlattices and quantum dots. Here, we investigate the electronic properties of the simplest, yet challenging, of such homostructures: InP NWs with a single homojunction between pure ZB and WZ segments. Polarization-resolved microphotoluminescence (μ-PL) measurements on single NWs provide a tool to gain insights into the interplay between NW geometry and crystal phase. We also exploit this homostructure to simultaneously measure effective masses of charge carriers and excitons in ZB and WZ InP NWs, reliably. Magneto-μ-PL measurements carried out on individual NWs up to 29 T at 77 K allow us to determine the free exciton reduced masses of the ZB and WZ crystal phases, showing the heavier character of the WZ phase, and to deduce the effective mass of electrons in ZB InP NWs (me= 0.080 m0). Finally, we obtain the reduced mass of light-hole excitons in WZ InP by probing the second optically permitted transition Γ7C ↔ Γ7uV with magneto-μ-PL measurements carried out at room temperature. This information is used to extract the experimental light-hole effective mass in WZ InP, which is found to be mlh = 0.26 m0, a value much smaller than the one of the heavy hole mass. Besides being a valuable test for band structure calculations, the knowledge of carrier masses in WZ and ZB InP is important in view of the optimization of the efficiency of solar cells, which is one of the main applications of InP NWs.\ud \ud

Using THz spectroscopy, we show that the spin-wave spectrum of multiferroic BiFeO$_3$ in its high-field canted antiferromagnetic state is well described by a spin model that violates rhombohedral symmetry. We demonstrate that the monoclinic distortion of the canted antiferromagnetic state is induced by the single-ion magnetoelastic coupling between the lattice and the two nearly anti-parallel spins. The revised spin model for BiFeO$_3$ contains two new single-ion anisotropy terms that violate rhombohedral symmetry and depend on the direction of the magnetic field., Comment: 28 pages (main & supplementary), 2 figures (main article), 15 figures (supplementary material)

Magnetic density separation is an emerging recycling technology by which several different waste materials-from plastic products, electronics, or other-can be sorted in a single continuous processing step. Larger-scale installations will require ferrofluids that remain stable at several teslas, high magnetic fields at which colloidal stability was not investigated before. Here we optically monitor the concentration profile of iron oxide nanoparticles in aqueous ferrofluids at a field of 10 T and a gradient of 100 T/m. The sedimentation velocities and equilibrium concentration profiles inform on maintenance or breakdown of colloidal stability, which depends on the concentration and magnetic coupling energy of the nanoparticles. Comparison with results obtained with a small neodymium magnet indicate that stability at moderate fields is predictive of stability at much higher fields, which facilitates the development of new ferrofluids dedicated to magnetic density separation.

Magnesium (Mg) atoms in interstitial positions of a silicon host lattice form double donor centers. The binding energy of the neutral $\mathrm{M}{\mathrm{g}}^{0}$ state corresponds to midinfrared wavelengths. Due to its interstitial character, the outer orbitals of Mg atoms can form specific bonds with different trace elements in the silicon crystal. These occur as single and double donors that become detectable by infrared spectroscopy when the concentration of either Mg or the dopant coupled to it is sufficiently large. Infrared absorption spectroscopy at high magnetic fields allows us to observe the Zeeman effect of several shallow Mg-related donor complexes and neutral Mg donors, very similar to those observed for hydrogenlike centers. The quadratic Zeeman effect indicates a hydrogenlike center structure of the excited states and spatial localization of complexes with a single excess electron in its outer shell, which are formed by Mg with an impurity atom. In contrast, Mg complexes formed by bonds with two electrons are closer to substitutional double donors in silicon.

We present a combined experimental and theoretical study of state-to-state inelastic scattering of NO(X2Π1/2, j = 1/2f) with O2(X3Σg−) molecules at a collision energy of 480 cm−1, focusing in particular on the observation and interpretation of correlated excitations in both NO and O2. Various final states of the NO radical, in both spin–orbit manifolds, were measured with high resolution using a crossed molecular beam apparatus which employs a combination of Stark deceleration and velocity map imaging. Velocity map imaging directly measures both the angular distribution and the radial velocity distribution of the scattered NO molecules, which probes the kinetic energy uptake or release and hence correlated excitations of NO–O2 pairs. Simultaneous excitations of NO and O2 were resolved for all studied final states of NO. In all cases, the experimental results excellently agree with the results of simulations based on quantum scattering calculations. Trends are discussed by analyzing the scattering wave functions from the calculations.

The optical properties of colloidal cesium lead halide perovskite (CsPbBr3) nanocrystals are examined by time-resolved and polarization-resolved spectroscopy in high magnetic fields up to 30 T. We unambiguously show that at cryogenic temperatures the emission is dominated by recombination of negatively charged excitons with radiative decay time of 300 ps. The additional long-lived emission, which decay time shortens from 40 down to 8 ns and in which the decay time shortens and relative amplitude increases in high magnetic fields, evidences the presence of a dark exciton. We evaluate g-factors of the bright exciton gX = +2.4, the electron ge = +2.18, and the hole gh = −0.22.

In this paper, the evolution of the infra-red absorption of high-quality epitaxial diamond films versus boron concentration is reported. Homoepitaxial diamond films were grown by microwave-plasma-assisted chemical vapour deposition on type Ib crystals. From 2e17 to 8e20 1/cm3 of boron were incorporated in the diamond from the gas phase during growth. The main absorption features are (1) a single phonon absorption around 160 meV, (2) a series of three lines at 304, 347 and 363 meV due to excited states of the bound hole, (3) a photoionisation continuum, and (4) a phonon replica of these electronic transitions. The Evolution of these absorption with the boron concentration is presented and discussed. A strong increase in the photoionisation crosssection for boron concentrations above 5e18 1/cm3 is observed. New linear relationships between the boron concentration and the integrated absorption at 347 meV and the photoionisation are proposed. From the evolution of the lines due to transitions to boron-excited states, we deduced the width of the impurity band versus the boron concentration.

We directly track the tubelike motion of individual fluorescently labeled polymer molecules in a concentrated solution of unlabeled polymers. We use a single molecule wide-field fluorescence microscopy technique that is able to determine characteristic properties of the polymer dynamics, such as the confining potential, the tube diameter, and the Rouse time. The use of synthetic polymers allows us to investigate the confined motion of the polymer chains not only as a function of polymer concentration (mesh size) but also versus the persistence length of the matrix polymers. Although the polymers used have a persistence length much smaller than their contour length, our experimental results lead to a dependence of the tube diameter on both the mesh size and the persistence length, which follows the theoretically predicted relation for semiflexible chains.

Spin excitations of magnetoelectric LiNiPO4 are studied by infrared absorption spectroscopy in the THz spectral range as a function of magnetic field through various commensurate and incommensurate magnetically ordered phases up to 33 T. Six spin resonances and a strong two-magnon continuum are observed in zero magnetic field. Our systematic polarization study reveals that some of the excitations are usual magnetic-dipole active magnon modes, while others are either electromagnons, being only electric-dipole active, or magnetoelectric, that is both electric- and magnetic-dipole active spin excitations. Field-induced shifts of the modes for all three orientations of the field along the orthorhombic axes allow us to refine the values of the relevant exchange couplings, single-ion anisotropies, and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction on the level of a four-sublattice mean-field spin model. This model also reproduces the spectral shape of the two-magnon absorption continuum, found to be electric-dipole active in the experiment.

The Dual Boson approach to strongly correlated systems generally involves a dynamic (frequency-dependent) interaction in the auxiliary impurity model. In this work, we explore the consequences of forcing this interaction to be instantaneous (frequency-independent) via the use of a self-consistency condition on the instantaneous susceptibility. The result is a substantial simplification of the impurity model, especially with an eye on realistic multiband implementations, while keeping desireable properties of the Dual Boson approach, such as the charge conservation law, intact. We show and illustrate numerically that this condition enforces the absence of phase transitions in finite systems, as should be expected from general physical considerations, and respects the Mermin-Wagner theorem. In particular, the theory does not allow the metal to insulator phase transition associated with the formation of the magnetic order in the two-dimensional system. At the same time, the metal to charge ordered phase transition is allowed, as it is not associated with the spontaneous breaking of a continuous symmetry, and is accurately captured by the introduced approach.

We report optical transmission measurements through a single crystal of the Weyl semimetal TaAs at terahertz frequencies. The measurements were performed at T=1.6 K using intense coherent light from a free-electron laser in high magnetic fields. We detected small but measurable changes in the sample’s transparency upon applying dc voltage (current) to the sample. In a constant magnetic field, the sign of the transmission change depends on the current direction. The effect disappears in zero magnetic field. These observations are qualitatively consistent with theory predictions for optical signatures of the chiral anomaly in a Weyl semimetal. Stereodynamics describes how the vector properties of molecules, such as the directions in which they move and the axes about which they rotate, affect the probabilities (or cross-sections) of specific processes or transitions that occur on collision. The main aspects of stereodynamics in inelastic atom–molecule collisions can often be understood from classical considerations, in which the particles are represented by billiard-ball-like hard objects. In a quantum picture, however, the collision is described in terms of matter waves, which can also scatter into the region of the geometrical shadow of the object and reveal detailed information on the pure quantum-mechanical contribution to the stereodynamics. Here we present measurements of irregular diffraction patterns for NO radicals colliding with rare-gas atoms that can be explained by the analytical Fraunhofer model. They reveal a hitherto overlooked dependence on (or ‘propensity rule’ for) the magnetic quantum number m of the molecules, and a previously unrecognized type of quantum stereodynamics that has no classical analogue or interpretation.
