Melka Kunture es un clúster de yacimientos prehistóricos situados en el altiplano etíope, a 2.000-2.200 m sobre el nivel del mar, en la cuenca alta del río Awash. El clima es más bien fresco (temperatura media anual de 17° C) y lluvioso. Los resultados palinológicos demuestran que la vegetación durante el Pleistoceno era de tipo afromontano y, por lo tanto, diferente a la de sabana que se desarrolla en cotas más bajas. Tras casi 60 años de excavaciones en 20 yacimientos y en unos 60 niveles arqueológicos distintos, la secuencia arqueológica identificada incluye el Olduvayense, Achelense, Middle Stone Age y Late Stone Age. También se han descubierto fósiles de homininos en asociación directa con industrias líticas de diferentes tecnocomplejos. Además, se conocen niveles icnológicos, que proporcionan información sobre la vida y el comportamiento de homininos y fauna. La investigación sobre la adaptación de los homininos al clima y al entorno de las tierras altas es relevante para entender cómo y cuándo se produjo el primer poblamiento de Europa.

Las características físicas de las mieles son atributos importantes para los consumidores al momento de elegir una miel sobre otra; debido a esto, conocer estos parámetros y su origen botánico son fundamentales para determinar su calidad y precio. En el presente estudio se determinó el color, humedad y contenido polínico en las mieles colectadas en la zona de manglares en la costa del estado de Tabasco, México. Se colectaron 17 muestras y se determinó su color, contenido de humedad y se eligió una muestra de cada localidad para realizar un análisis melisopalinológico. Se encontraron cinco colores de miel con valores desde 12 hasta 120 mm Pfund, siendo ámbar extra claro y blanco los colores predominantes. En relación con el contenido de humedad, se tuvieron muestras con valores de 18 a 23 %, de los cuales el 53 % de éstas cumplen con el límite (20 %) establecido en la normatividad; finalmente todas las muestras resultaron multiflorales siendo las Fabaceae, Poaceae y Asteraceae las familias botánicas más importantes. En conclusión, en los manglares de la costa de Tabasco, México, se producen mieles multiflorales de tonos claros, en donde predominan las de color ámbar extra claro y blanco, con un contenido de humedad entre el 18 y 23 %, por lo que estas mieles podrían ser aptas para incursionar en mercados más especializados si se asegura una humedad de 20 % como máximo.

Self-healing is a preventive maintenance technique developed to extend the service life of road pavements, accordingly, increasing their sustainability: energy consumption savings, lower emissions, and a decrease in the use of non-renewable resources. Microwave (MW) self-healing technology consists of heating the binder so it can flow and fill the cracks in the pavement. To promote and enhance this asphalt self-healing capacity, electrically conductive susceptible particles like steel slag can be added as aggregates in the asphalt mixture, and a combination of heat and re-compaction energy (thermomechanical treatment) can be applied to improve healing rates. However, one of the key issues is determining how to take full advantage of asphalt mixtures self-healing capacity to maximize the extended life span of asphalt pavements in order to avoid the use of a great number of non-renewable resources and energy in the rehabilitation of deteriorated pavements. Although some different factors that affect self-healing effectiveness are being studied, the optimal implementation conditions and moment to apply the MW treatment have yet to be determined. Hence, this paper aims to identify variables and establish an optimal implementation of the MW self-healing technology including steel slags and a thermomechanical treatment (MW heating and re-compaction). For this purpose, the influence of the implementation conditions, the moment of application, and the mixture design have been assessed by Life-Cycle Greenhouse Gas emissions, Cumulative Energy Demand, and cost evaluation. Results have shown that the optimal moment to apply the MW treatment would be around the half-life span of the asphalt pavement, being the most beneficial solution when applied over asphalt mixtures using steel slag as this allows reducing energy requirement during the MW application process and minimise costs.

Mangroves are essential for the well-being of the inhabitants of coastal areas, who have extensive knowledge about the use and exploitation of this resource. However, this knowledge is decreasing, which could trigger negative repercussions for this ecosystem. Ethnobiological investigations make it possible to gather information on the use, management, and exploitation of this resource. Hence, this paper presents a study that is framed around the coastal area of the state of Tabasco, in southeast México, and consists of 74 semi-structured interviews that were carried out, while the local relevance of each mangrove species was evaluated using ethnobiological indices. Three species of mangrove were identified, Avicennia germinans, Laguncularia racemosa, and Rhizophora mangle, and the latter species had the highest Use-Value (UV) Index value of 6.08. A total of 27 forms of forestry use were found, 11 for non-timber use and 16 for timber use. Firewood stood out as the main use with 12.6%, while the use of needles to make cloth and crafts represented the lowest percentage with 0.3%. The uses given by the coastal population to the mangroves and their respective species were influenced by immediate needs and specific characteristics of each species. To ensure the sustainability of mangroves, it is essential to design environmental strategies that integrate local ethnobiological knowledge and promote the active participation of direct users of this ecosystem. These strategies should be incorporated into public conservation policies, recognizing the cultural and economic value that mangroves hold for local communities. By implementing these actions, the relationship between communities and their environment will be strengthened, laying the groundwork for further exploration of coastal ethnobiology.

Introducción: Para calcular el crecimiento de las plantas se emplean funciones alométricas que consideran ciertos parámetros físicos del árbol, tales como el diámetro a la altura del pecho, la altura y el diámetro de la copa. El objetivo: estimar el crecimiento del mangle blanco (Laguncularia racemosa L. Gaertn) en parcelas de validación durante la época seca del año 2023. Materiales y métodos: Se realizaron mediciones en tres parcelas durante la época de seca del año de las variables alométricas del mangle blanco (Laguncularia racemosa). Resultados: La altura presentó medias de 1.26 m, 1.37 m y 1.43 m, el DAP presento medias de 0.37 cm, 0.28 cm y 0.41 cm, y el diámetro de copa valores de la media de 41.81 cm, 37.17 cm y 51.60 cm, todos estos valores para las mediciones de febrero, abril y junio respectivamente. Conclusión: el estudio confirma que la época seca tiene un impacto significativo en el crecimiento del mangle blanco, ya que se demostró diferencias significativas en el crecimiento de las plantas evaluadas en términos de altura, diámetro a la altura del pecho (DAP) y diámetro de copa, lo cual sugiere que factores estacionales y ambientales influyen notablemente en su desarrollo.

Roller-compacted concrete (RCC) pavements have been the subject of studies focused on their increasing deterioration over time due to the influence of vehicular loading and ambient factors in humidity and temperature conditions ranging from medium to low (40% relative humidity and 25 °C temperature). Therefore, it is necessary to understand how they behave under various relative humidity and temperature conditions since these parameters vary in each geographic region. In this context, this research focused on analyzing the effect of drying shrinkage on RCC pavements under the influence of vehicular loading using a computational model calibrated with data obtained under typical ambient conditions. For this purpose, laboratory experiments were performed, numerical modeling was used, and the results for RCC pavements were validated using statistical analysis. The results revealed validated models providing moisture content and drying shrinkage curves. These results also underline the importance of considering ambient effects when calculating pavement stresses as a response variable in structural designs. In particular, these effects are highlighted as they can generate changes in pavement stresses of up to 10%, emphasizing the relevance of the models proposed in this study as they consider this phenomenon when predicting the performance and durability of RCC pavements.

El presente trabajo se realizó en la División Académica de Ciencias Biológicas de la UJAT, con la finalidad de registrar los servicios ambientales que genera el macuilíz. Esta especie reviste gran importancia ecológica, económica y cultural. Este estudio permitió, conocer los bienes y servicios que esta especie aporta dentro de la División. Para ello se planteó identificar y evaluar losservicios ecosistémicos que brinda esta especie en la DACBiol-UJAT, durante el año 2017. El trabajo se dividió en tres partes: Primero, revisión bibliográfica, segundo, trabajo de campo; dividido en 7 etapas; 1) censo, 2) premuestreo, 3) marcaje, 4) medición, 5) monitoreo, 6) servicios ambientales y 7) etapas reproductivas; y tercero trabajo de gabinete. Los bienes y servicios registrados fueron: alimento, regulación de la temperatura, polinización, anidación, nidación, hábitat, refugio, percha, descanso, generación de materia orgánica, sombra y belleza escénica. Se registraron cuatro grupos taxonómicos de fauna que hacen uso de los bienes que genera esta especie: aves, insectos, mamíferos y reptiles; los grupos que registraron mayor riqueza fueron las aves seguido por el grupo de insectos. Se registró una temperatura mensual que va de 28.6 hasta los 34.7°C y en sombra reduce la temperatura de 26 a 30 °C. Se registraron los servicios ecosistémicos que brinda Tabebuia rosea en la zona de estudio; estos servicios se dividieron en cuatro categorías: servicios de provisión, regulación, soporte y cultural. Además, benefician a la diversidad biológica que se sustenta, resguarda y habita en el nicho ecológico que provee esta especie.
