Abstract

Gigahertz acoustic resonators have the potential to advance data processing and quantum communication. However, they are expensive and lack responsiveness to external stimuli, limiting their use in sensing applications. In contrast, low-cost nanoscale mesoporous materials, known for their high surface-to-volume ratio, have shown promise in various applications. We recently demonstrated that mesoporous silicon dioxide (SiO2) and titanium dioxide (TiO2) thin layers can support coherent acoustic modes in the 5 to 100 GHz range. In this study, we propose a new method for designing tunable acoustic resonators using mesoporous thin films on acoustic distributed Bragg reflectors. By infiltrating the pores with different chemicals, the material's properties could be altered and achieve tunability in the acoustic resonances. We present four device designs and use simulations to predict resonators with Q-factors up to 1000. We also observe that the resonant frequency and intensity show a linear response to relative humidity, with a tunability of up to 60 %. 4. Hybrid mesoporous electrodes evidence CISS effect on water oxidation.

Abstract

Controlling product selectivity is essential for improving the efficiency of multi-product reactions. Electrochemical water oxidation is a reaction of main importance in different applications, e.g., renewable energy schemes and environmental protection, where H2O2 and O2 are the two principal products. In this Communication, the product selectivity of electrochemical water oxidation was controlled by making use of the chiral induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect at mesoporous-TiO2 on the molecule-modified Au substrate. Our results show a decrease in H2O2 formation when using chiral hetero-helicene molecules adsorbed on the Au substrate. We propose a mechanism for this kinetic effect based on the onset of CISS-induced spin polarization on the Au–helicene chiral interface. Abstract

The preparation of nanomaterials for energy applications such as intercalation batteries and materials that can act as substrates for water oxidation is a subject of major interest nowadays. In this work, we report the deposition of Prussian blue (PB) and its cobalt analogue (CoPBA) on mesoporous titania thin films (MTTF) using the successive ionic layer adsorption reaction (SILAR) technique under soft conditions. A bifunctional ligand, 1,10‐phenanthroline‐5,6‐dione (pd), was used to functionalize the titania surface and promote the growth of PB and CoPBA. The resulting PB@MTTF and CoPBA@MTTF nanocomposites were characterized using several techniques and it was determined that PB and CoPBA grow in a controlled and sequential manner, maintaining the mesoporous architecture. Both PB@MTTF and CoPBA@MTTF demonstrated very good electroactive properties, while CoPBA@MTTF exhibited water oxidation capabilities. The flexibility of this PBA@MTTF platform allows the incorporation of any labile transition metal ion or fragment into the structure of the coordination polymer embedded into a mesoporous matrix, opening the door for (photo)electrochemical devices and catalysts. 42. Following thermal evolution of mesoporous TiO2: from the sol to the oxide.

Abstract

Mesoporous TiO2 thin films have been extensively studied and applied in the construction of a wide variety of devices. To this end, it is critical to obtain detailed structural information regarding film formation and processing. However, there is still a lack of information about their chemical identity during thermal treatment, in which a transition from a hybrid mesostructure to a mesoporous matrix occurs. In this work, we present the FTIR characterization of three different mesoporous TiO2 films, templated with Brij 58, Pluronic F127 and Pluronic P123. The FTIR spectra were followed in situ from the sol deposition, through the thermal treatments until reaching 400 °C, using a high temperature cell. A detailed analysis taking into account all of the sol's components and all the spectral regions in the range 3600–650 cm−1 was performed. The results obtained were compared with thermal analysis, coupled with mass spectrometry analysis of the released species. By this means, all the stages of the processing (solvent evaporation, template elimination and precursors condensation) were identified, and we were able to determine which chemical species are present at every treatment step. The results presented here can be useful when choosing processing conditions adapted for the final application of the TiO2 films. Highlights: Thermal evolution of mesoporous TiO2 with three different templates was assessed by FTIR analysis. Temperatures at which each processing stage occurs were determined.
