We present Atacama Compact Array (ACA) Band-3 observations of the protocluster SPT2349$-$56, an extreme system hosting ${\gtrsim}\,12$ submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) at $z\,{=}\,4.3$, to study its integrated molecular gas content via CO(4-3) and long-wavelength dust continuum. The $\sim$30-hour integration represents one of the longest exposures yet taken on a single pointing with the ACA 7-m. The low-resolution ACA data ($21.0''\,{\times}\,12.2''$) reveal a 75% excess CO(4-3) flux compared to the sum of individual sources detected in higher-resolution Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) data ($1.0''\,{\times}\,0.8''$). Our work also reveals a similar result by tapering the ALMA data to $10''$. In contrast, the 3.2mm dust continuum shows little discrepancy between ACA and ALMA. A single-dish [CII] spectrum obtained by APEX/FLASH supports the ACA CO(4-3) result, revealing a large excess in [CII] emission relative to ALMA. The missing flux is unlikely due to undetected faint sources but instead suggests that high-resolution ALMA observations might miss extended and low-surface-brightness gas. Such emission could originate from the circum-galactic medium (CGM) or the pre-heated proto-intracluster medium (proto-ICM). If this molecular gas reservoir replenishes the star formation fuel, the overall depletion timescale will exceed 400Myr, reducing the requirement for the simultaneous SMG activity in SPT2349$-$56. Our results highlight the role of an extended gas reservoir in sustaining a high star formation rate (SFR) in SPT2349$-$56, and potentially establishing the ICM during the transition phase to a mature cluster., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures and 3 tables. The history of gas assembly in early galaxies is reflected in their complex kinematics. While a considerable fraction of galaxies at z~5 are consistent with rotating disks, current studies indicate that the dominant galaxy assembly mechanism corresponds to mergers. Despite the important progress, the dynamical classification of galaxies at these epochs is still limited by observations' resolution. We present a detailed morphological and kinematic analysis of the far-infrared bright main sequence galaxy HZ10 at z=5.65, making use of new high-resolution ($\lesssim0.3$") [CII] 158$\mu$m ALMA and rest-frame optical JWST/NIRSpec observations. These observations reveal a previously unresolved complex morphology and kinematics of the HZ10. We confirm that HZ10 is not a single galaxy but consists of at least three components in close projected separation along the east-to-west direction. We find a [CII] bright central component (C), separated by 1.5 and 4 kpc from the east (E) and west (W) components, respectively. Our [CII] observations resolve the HZ10-C component resulting in a velocity gradient, produced by either rotation or a close-in merger. We test the rotating disk possibility using DysmalPy kinematic modeling and propose three dynamical scenarios for the HZ10 system: (i) a double merger, in which the companion galaxy HZ10-W merges with the disturbed clumpy rotation disk formed by the HZ10-C and E components; (ii) a triple merger, where the companion galaxies, HZ10-W and HZ10-E, merge with the rotation disk HZ10-C; and (iii) a quadruple merger, in which the companion galaxies HZ10-W and HZ10-E merge with the close double merger HZ10-C. Comparing [CII] with JWST/NIRSpec data, we find that [CII] emission closely resembles the broad [OIII] 5007{\AA} emission. We present VLT/MUSE integral-field spectroscopy ($R\approx 1\,800$) of four giant gravitational arcs exhibiting strong C IV absorption at 8 intervening redshifts, $z_{abs}\approx 2.0$--$2.5$. We detect C IV absorption in a total of 222 adjacent and seeing-uncorrelated sightlines, whose spectra sample beams of ("de-lensed") linear size $\approx 1$ kpc. Our data show that (1) absorption velocities cluster at all probed transverse scales, $\Delta r_\perp\approx0$--$15$ kpc, depending on system; (2) the (transverse) velocity dispersion never exceeds the mean (line-of-sight) absorption spread; and (3) the (transverse) velocity autocorrelation function does not resolve kinematic patterns at the above spatial scales, but its velocity projection, $\xi^{arc}(\Delta v)$, exhibits a similar shape to the known two-point correlation function toward quasars, $\xi^{QSO}(\Delta v)$. An empirical kinematic model suggests that these results are a natural consequence of wide-beam observations of an unresolved clumpy medium. Our model recovers both the underlying velocity dispersion of the clumps ($70$--$170$ \kms) and the mean number of clumps per unit area ($2$--$13$ kpc$^{-2}$). The latter constrains the projected mean inter-clump distance to within $\approx0.3$--$0.8$ kpc, which we argue is a measure of clump size for near-unity covering fraction. The model is also able to predict $\xi^{arc}(\Delta v)$ from $\xi^{QSO}(\Delta v)$, suggesting that the strong systems that shape the former and the line-of-sight velocity components that define the latter trace the same kinematic population. Consequently, the clumps must possess an internal density structure that generates both weak and strong components. Using a combination of HST, JWST, and ALMA data, we perform spatially resolved spectral energy distributions (SED) fitting of fourteen 4

We present a spatially resolved analysis of four star-forming galaxies at $z = 4.44-5.64$ using data from the JWST PRIMER and ALMA-CRISTAL surveys to probe the stellar and inter-stellar medium properties on the sub-kpc scale. In the $1-5\,\mu{\rm m}$ JWST NIRCam imaging we find that the galaxies are composed of multiple clumps (between $2$ and $\sim 8$) separated by $\simeq 5\,{\rm kpc}$, with comparable morphologies and sizes in the rest-frame UV and optical. Using BAGPIPES to perform pixel-by-pixel SED fitting to the JWST data we show that the SFR ($\simeq 25\,{\rm M}_{\odot}/{\rm yr}$) and stellar mass (${\rm log}_{10}(M_{\star}/{\rm M}_{\odot}) \simeq 9.5$) derived from the resolved analysis are in close ($ \lesssim 0.3\,{\rm dex}$) agreement with those obtained by fitting the integrated photometry. In contrast to studies of lower-mass sources, we thus find a reduced impact of outshining of the older (more massive) stellar populations in these normal $z \simeq 5$ galaxies. Our JWST analysis recovers bluer rest-frame UV slopes ($\beta \simeq -2.1$) and younger ages ($\simeq 100\,{\rm Myr}$) than archival values. We find that the dust continuum from ALMA-CRISTAL seen in two of these galaxies correlates, as expected, with regions of redder rest-frame UV slopes and the SED-derived $A_{\rm V}$, as well as the peak in the stellar mass map. We compute the resolved IRX-$\beta$ relation, showing that the IRX is consistent with the local starburst attenuation curve and further demonstrating the presence of an inhomogeneous dust distribution within the galaxies. A comparison of the CRISTAL sources to those from the FirstLight zoom-in simulation of galaxies with the same $M_{\star}$ and SFR reveals similar age and colour gradients, suggesting that major mergers may be important in the formation of clumpy galaxies at this epoch., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures, 3 tables, plus 4 page appendix. This study aims to investigate the molecular gas content of strongly magnified low-mass star-forming galaxies around the cosmic noon period ($z\sim2$) through observations of CO emission lines and dust continuum emission, both of which serve as tracers for molecular gas. We observed twelve strongly lensed galaxies with the Atacama Compact Array to detect CO mid-j rotational transitions and dust continuum. Thanks to the strong lensing, we were able to probe the low-mass regime, previously understudied. With a compiled set of observations, we recalibrate empirical relations between star formation rate density and the CO line ratios. Using SED fitting, we derived galaxy properties and performed galaxy stacking to combine the faint signals. In all cases, molecular gas masses were estimated using both tracers. We detected CO emission in three out of 12 galaxies and dust continuum emission in three of them. The obtained molecular gas masses indicate that most of these galaxies ($\rm{M}_* < 10^{10.7}$ $\rm{M}_\odot$) have lower molecular gas fractions and shorter depletion times compared to the expectations from established scaling relations at these redshifts. Several possible explanations for this gas deficit were explored, including uncertainties in mass estimates, effects of low metallicity environments, larger atomic gas reservoirs in low-mass systems, and the possibility that these represent low-mass analogs of "main sequence starburst" galaxies, which are undergoing sustained star formation due to gas compaction despite low overall gas fractions. We conclude that there is a molecular gas deficit at these mass and metallicity regimes. Our results suggest that this deficit is likely due to a significant amount of atomic gas, which our stacking indicates is about 91% of the total gas. However, this estimation might be an upper limit in the case of our galaxies containing CO-dark gas.

We investigate the spatial extent and structure of the [CII] line emission in a sample of 34 galaxies at $z=4-6$ from the ALMA-CRISTAL Survey. By modeling the [CII] line emission in the interferometric visibility, we derive the effective radius of [CII] line emission assuming an exponential profile. The [CII] line radius ranges from 0.5 to 3.5 kpc with an average value of $\langle R_{e,[CII]}\rangle=1.90$ kpc. We compare the [CII] sizes with the sizes of rest-frame UV and FIR continua, which were measured from the HST F160W images and ALMA Band-7 continuum images, respectively. We confirm that the [CII] line emission is more spatially extended than the continuum emission, with average size ratios of $\langle R_{e,[CII]}/R_{e,UV}\rangle=2.90$ and $\langle R_{e,[CII]}/R_{e,FIR}\rangle=1.54$, although about half of the FIR-detected sample show comparable spatial extent between [CII] line and FIR continuum emission. The residual visibility of the best-fit model do not show statistical evidence of flux excess, indicating that the [CII] line emission in star-forming galaxies can be characterized by an extended exponential profile. Overall, our results suggest that the spatial extent of [CII] line emission can primarily be explained by PDRs associated with star formation activity, while the contribution from diffuse neutral medium (atomic gas) and the effects of past merger events may further expand the [CII] line distributions, causing their variations. Finally, we report the negative correlation between $\Sigma_{[CII]}$ and EW$_{Ly\alpha}$, and possible negative correlation between $R_{e,[CII]}/R_{e,UV}$ and EW$_{Ly\alpha}$, which may be in line with the scenario that atomic gas largely contributes to the extended [CII] line emission. Galaxy protoclusters are sites of rapid growth, with a high density of massive galaxies driving elevated rates of star formation and accretion onto supermassive black holes. Here, we present new JWST/NIRSpec IFU observations of the J1000+0234 group at $z=4.54$, a dense region of a protocluster hosting a massive, dusty star forming galaxy (DSFG). The new data reveal two extended, high-equivalent-width (EW$_0>1000\r{A}$) [O III] nebulae that appear at both sides of the DSFG along its minor axis (namely O3-N and O3-S). On one hand, the spectrum of O3-N shows a broad and blueshifted component with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 1300 km/s, suggesting an outflow origin. On the other hand, O3-S stretches over 8.6 kpc, and has a velocity gradient that spans 800 km/s, but shows no evidence of a broad component. However, both sources seem to be powered by an active galactic nucleus (AGN), so we classified them as extended emission-line regions (EELRs). The strongest evidence comes from the detection of the high-ionization [Ne V] $\lambda 3427$ line toward O3-N, which paired with the lack of hard X-rays implies an obscuring column density above the Compton-thick regime. The [Ne V] line is not detected in O3-S, but we measure a He II $\lambda 4687$/H$\beta$=0.25, which is well above the expectation for star formation. Despite the remarkable alignment of O3-N and O3-S with two radio sources, we do not find evidence of shocks from a radio jet that could be powering the EELRs. We interpret this as O3-S being externally irradiated by the AGN, akin to the famous Hanny's Voorwerp object in the local Universe. In addition, classical line ratio diagnostics (e.g., [O III]/H$\beta$ vs [N II]/H$\alpha$) put the DSFG itself in the AGN region of the diagrams, and therefore suggest it to be the most probable AGN host. We present new $\lambda_{\rm rest}=77$ $\mu$m dust continuum observations from the ALMA of HZ10 (CRISTAL-22), a dusty main-sequence galaxy at $z$=5.66 as part of the [CII] Resolved Ism in STar-forming Alma Large program, CRISTAL. The high angular resolution of the ALMA Band 7 and new Band 9 data($\sim{0}''.4$) reveals the complex structure of HZ10, which comprises two main components (HZ10-C and HZ10-W) and a bridge-like dusty emission between them (the Bridge). We model the dust spectral energy distribution (SED) to constrain the physical conditions of the interstellar medium (ISM) and its variations among the different components identified in HZ10. We find that HZ10-W (the more UV-obscured component) has an SED dust temperature of $T_{\rm SED}$$\sim$51.2$\pm13.1$ K; this is $\sim$5 K higher (although still consistent) than that of the central component and previous global estimations for HZ10. Our new ALMA data allow us to reduce by a factor of $\sim$2.3 the uncertainties of global $T_{\rm SED}$ measurements compared to previous studies. Interestingly, HZ10-W shows a lower [CII]/FIR ratio compared to the other two components (although still within the uncertainties), suggesting a harder radiation field destroying polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon associated with [CII] emission (e.g., active galactic nuclei or young stellar populations). While HZ10-C appears to follow the tight IRX-$\beta_{\rm UV}$ relation seen in local UV-selected starburst galaxies and high-$z$ star-forming galaxies, we find that both HZ10-W and the Bridge depart from this relation and are well described by dust-screen models with holes in front of a hard UV radiation field. This suggests that the UV emission (likely from young stellar populations) is strongly attenuated in the more dusty components of the HZ10 system.

The ALMA [CII] Resolved Ism in STar-forming gALaxies (CRISTAL) survey is a Cycle 8 ALMA Large Programme that studies the cold gas component of high-redshift galaxies. Its sub-arcsecond resolution observations are key to disentangling physical mechanisms that shape galaxies during cosmic dawn. In this paper, we explore the morphology and kinematics of the cold gas, star-forming, and stellar components in the star-forming main-sequence galaxy CRISTAL-05/HZ3, at z = 5.54. Our analysis includes 0.3" spatial resolution (~2 kpc) ALMA observations of the [CII] line. While CRISTAL-05 was previously classified as a single source, our observations reveal that the system is a close interacting pair surrounded by an extended component of carbon-enriched gas. This is imprinted in the disturbed elongated [CII] morphology and the separation of the two components in the position-velocity diagram (~100 km/s). The central region is composed of two components, named C05-NW and C05-SE, with the former being the dominant one. A significant fraction of the [CII] arises beyond the close pair up to 10 kpc, while the regions forming new massive stars and the stellar component seem compact (r_[CII] ~ 4 r_UV), as traced by rest-frame UV and optical imaging obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope and the James Webb Space Telescope. Our kinematic model, using the DYSMALpy software, yields a minor contribution of dark matter of C05-NW within a radius of ~2x Reff. Finally, we explore the resolved [CII]/FIR ratios as a proxy for shock-heating produced by this merger. We argue that the extended [CII] emission is mainly caused by the merger, which could not be discerned with lower-resolution observations. Using integrated spectra for two gravitationally lensed galaxies from the JWST TEMPLATES Early Release Science program, we analyze faint auroral lines, which provide direct measurements of the gas-phase chemical abundance. For the brighter galaxy, SGAS1723$+$34 ($z = 1.3293$), we detect the [OIII]$\lambda4363$, [SIII]$\lambda6312$, and [OII]$\lambda\lambda$7320,7330 auroral emission lines, and set an upper limit for the [NII]$\lambda5755$ line. For the second galaxy, SGAS1226$+$21 ($z = 2.925$), we do not detect any auroral lines, and report upper limits. With these measurements and upper limits, we constrain the electron temperatures in different ionization zones within both of these galaxies. For SGAS1723$+$34, where auroral lines are detected, we calculate direct oxygen and nitrogen abundances, finding an N/O ratio consistent with observations of nearby ($z\sim 0$) galaxies. Massive star-forming galaxies in the high-redshift universe host large reservoirs of cold gas in their circumgalactic medium (CGM). Traditionally, these reservoirs have been linked to diffuse H I Lyman-$\alpha$ (Ly$\alpha)$ emission extending beyond $\approx 10$ kpc scales. In recent years, millimeter/submillimeter observations are starting to identify even colder gas in the CGM through molecular and/or atomic tracers such as the [C II] $158\,\mu$m transition. In this context, we study the well-known J1000+0234 system at $z=4.54$ that hosts a massive dusty star-forming galaxy (DSFG), a UV-bright companion, and a Ly$\alpha$ blob. We combine new ALMA [C II] line observations taken by the CRISTAL survey with data from previous programs targeting the J1000+0234 system, and achieve a deep view into a DSFG and its rich environment at a 0.2" resolution. We identify an elongated [C II]-emitting structure with a projected size of 15 kpc stemming from the bright DSFG at the center of the field, with no clear counterpart at any other wavelength. The plume is oriented $\approx 40^{\circ}$ away from the minor axis of the DSFG, and shows significant spatial variation of its spectral parameters. In particular, the [C II] emission shifts from 180 km/s to 400 km/s between the bottom and top of the plume, relative to the DSFG's systemic velocity. At the same time, the line width starts at 400-600 km/s but narrows down to 190 km/s at top end of the plume. We discuss four possible scenarios to interpret the [C II] plume: a conical outflow, a cold accretion stream, ram pressure stripping, and gravitational interactions. While we cannot strongly rule out any of these with the available data, we disfavor the ram pressure stripping scenario due to the requirement of special hydrodynamic conditions., Comment: 17 pages (14 main text, 2 for references and 1 appendix page), 7 figures and 4 tables. We describe a custom outlier rejection algorithm for JWST/NIRSpec integral field spectroscopy. This method uses a layered sigma clipping approach that adapts clipping thresholds based upon the spatial profile of the science target. We find that this algorithm produces a robust outlier rejection while simultaneously preserving the signal of the science target. Originally developed as a response to unsatisfactory initial performance of the jwst pipeline outlier detection step, this method works either as a standalone solution, or as a supplement to the current pipeline software. Comparing leftover (i.e., not flagged) artifacts with the current pipeline's outlier detection step, we find that our method results in one fifth as many residual artifacts as the jwst pipeline. However, we find a combination of both methods removes nearly all artifacts -- an approach that takes advantage of both our algorithm's robust outlier rejection and the pipeline's use of individual dithers. This combined approach is what the TEMPLATES Early Release Science team has converged upon for our NIRSpec observations. This paper gives an overview of TEMPLATES, a JWST Early Release Science program that targeted four extremely bright, gravitationally lensed galaxies: two extremely dusty, two with low attenuation, as templates for galaxy evolution studies with JWST. TEMPLATES obtains a common set of spectral diagnostics for these 1.3 < z < 4.2 galaxies, in particular H alpha, Paschen alpha, and the rest-frame optical and near-infrared continua. In addition, two of the four targets have JWST coverage of [O III] 5007 Angstrom and H beta; the other two targets have have JWST coverage of PAH 3.3 micron and complementary ALMA data covering the [C II] 158 micron emission line. The science goals of TEMPLATES are to demonstrate attenuation-robust diagnostics of star formation, map the distribution of star formation, compare the young and old stellar populations, and measure the physical conditions of star formation and their spatial variation across the galaxies. In addition, TEMPLATES has technical goals to establish best practices for the Integral Field Units (IFU) within the NIRSpec and MIRI instruments, both in terms of observing strategy and in terms of data reduction. We present the morphological parameters and global properties of dust-obscured star formation in typical star-forming galaxies at z=4-6. Among 26 galaxies composed of 20 galaxies observed by the Cycle-8 ALMA Large Program, CRISTAL, and six galaxies from archival data, we have individually detected rest-frame 158$\mu$m dust continuum emission from 19 galaxies, nine of which are reported for the first time. The derived far-infrared luminosities are in the range $\log_{10} L_{\rm IR}\,[L_{\odot}]=$10.9-12.4, an order of magnitude lower than previously detected massive dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs). The average relationship between the fraction of dust-obscured star formation ($f_{\rm obs}$) and the stellar mass is consistent with previous results at z=4-6 in a mass range of $\log_{10} M_{\ast}\,[M_{\odot}]\sim$9.5-11.0 and show potential evolution from z=6-9. The individual $f_{\rm obs}$ exhibits a significant diversity, and it shows a correlation with the spatial offset between the dust and the UV continuum, suggesting the inhomogeneous dust reddening may cause the source-to-source scatter in $f_{\rm obs}$. The effective radii of the dust emission are on average $\sim$1.5 kpc and are $\sim2$ times more extended than the rest-frame UV. The infrared surface densities of these galaxies ($\Sigma_{\rm IR}\sim2.0\times10^{10}\,L_{\odot}\,{\rm kpc}^{-2}$) are one order of magnitude lower than those of DSFGs that host compact central starbursts. On the basis of the comparable contribution of dust-obscured and dust-unobscured star formation along with their similar spatial extent, we suggest that typical star-forming galaxies at z=4-6 form stars throughout the entirety of their disks.

One of the biggest puzzles regarding the circumgalactic medium (CGM) is the structure of its cool ($T\sim10^4$ K) gas phase. While the kinematics of quasar absorption systems suggests the CGM is composed of a population of different clouds, constraining the clouds' extent and spatial distribution has proven challenging, both from the theoretical and observational points of view. In this work we study the spatial structure of the $z\sim 1$ CGM with unprecedented detail via resolved spectroscopy of giant gravitational arcs. We put together a sample of Mg II$\lambda\lambda 2796,2803$ detections obtained with VLT/MUSE in 91 spatially independent and contiguous sight-lines toward 3 arcs, each probing an isolated star-forming galaxy believed to be detected in absorption. We constrain the coherence scale of this gas ($C_{\rm{length}}$), which represents the spatial scale over which the Mg II equivalent width (EW) remains constant, by comparing EW variations measured across all sight-lines with empirical models. We present JWST and ALMA results for the lensing system SPT0418-47, which includes a strongly-lensed, dusty star-forming galaxy at redshift z=4.225 and an associated multiply-imaged companion. JWST NIRCam and MIRI imaging observations presented in this paper were acquired as part of the Early Release Science program Targeting Extremely Magnified Panchromatic Lensed Arcs and Their Extended Star Formation (TEMPLATES). This data set provides robust, mutiwavelength detection of stellar light in both the main (SPT0418A) and companion (SPT0418B) galaxies, while the ALMA detection of [C II] emission confirms that SPT0418B lies at the same redshift as SPT0418A. From a source plane reconstruction, we infer that the projected physical separation of the two galaxies is $4.42\pm 0.05$ kpc. We derive total magnifications of $\mu=29.5\pm1.2$ and $\mu=4.2\pm 0.9$ for SPT0418A and SPT0418B, respectively. We use both CIGALE and PROSPECTOR to derive stellar masses. The stellar mass ratio of SPT0418A and SPT0418B is approximately 4 to 1 ($4.5\pm 1.0$ for CIGALE and $4.2^{+1.9}_{-1.6}$ for PROSPECTOR). We also see evidence of extended structure associated with SPT0418A in the lensing reconstruction that is suggestive of a tidal feature. We present the first spatially resolved maps of gas-phase metallicity for two dust-obscured star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) at $z\sim$ 4, from the JWST TEMPLATES Early Release Science program, derived from NIRSpec integral field unit spectroscopy of the H$\alpha$ and [NII] emission lines. Empirical optical line calibrations are used to determine that the sources are globally enriched to near-solar levels. While one source shows elevated [NII]/H$\alpha$ ratios and broad H$\alpha$ emission consistent with the presence of an AGN in a $\gtrsim$1kpc region, we argue that both systems have already undergone significant metal enrichment as a result of their extremely high star formation rates. Utilizing ALMA rest-frame 380$\mu$m continuum and [CI]($^3$P$_2$-$^3$P$_1$) line maps we compare the spatial variation of the metallicity and gas-to-dust ratio in the two galaxies, finding the two properties to be anticorrelated on highly resolved spatial scales, consistent with various literature studies of $z\sim$ 0 galaxies. Dust grains absorb half of the radiation emitted by stars throughout the history of the universe, re-emitting this energy at infrared wavelengths. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are large organic molecules that trace millimeter-size dust grains and regulate the cooling of the interstellar gas within galaxies. Observations of PAH features in very distant galaxies have been difficult due to the limited sensitivity and wavelength coverage of previous infrared telescopes. Here we present JWST observations that detect the 3.3um PAH feature in a galaxy observed less than 1.5 billion years after the Big Bang. The high equivalent width of the PAH feature indicates that star formation, rather than black hole accretion, dominates the infrared emission throughout the galaxy. The light from PAH molecules, large dust grains, and stars and hot dust are spatially distinct from one another, leading to order-of-magnitude variations in the PAH equivalent width and the ratio of PAH to total infrared luminosity across the galaxy. The spatial variations we observe suggest either a physical offset between the PAHs and large dust grains or wide variations in the local ultraviolet radiation field. We have observed the z=4.3 protocluster SPT2349-56 with ATCA with the aim of detecting radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGN) amongst the ~30 submillimeter galaxies identified in the structure. We detect the central complex of SMGs at 2.2\,GHz with a luminosity of L_2.2=(4.42pm0.56)x10^{25} W/Hz. The ASKAP also detects the source at 888 MHz, constraining the radio spectral index to alpha=-1.6pm0.3, consistent with ATCA non-detections at 5.5 and 9GHz, and implying L_1.4(rest)=(2.4pm0.3)x10^{26}W/Hz. This radio luminosity is about 100 times higher than expected from star formation, assuming the usual FIR-radio correlation, which is a clear indication of an AGN driven by a forming brightest cluster galaxy (BCG). None of the SMGs in SPT2349-56 show signs of AGN in any other diagnostics available to us (notably 12CO out to J=16, OH163um, CII/IR, and optical spectra), highlighting the radio continuum as a powerful probe of obscured AGN in high-z protoclusters. No other significant radio detections are found amongst the cluster members, consistent with the FIR-radio correlation. We compare these results to field samples of radio sources and SMGs, along with the 22 SPT-SMG gravitational lenses also observed in the ATCA program, as well as powerful radio galaxies at high redshifts. Our results allow us to better understand the effects of this gas-rich, overdense environment on early supermassive black hole (SMBH) growth and cluster feedback. We estimate that (3.3pm0.7)x10^{38} W of power are injected into the growing ICM by the radio-loud AGN, whose energy over 100Myr is comparable to the binding energy of the gas mass of the central halo. The AGN power is also comparable to the instantaneous energy injection from supernova feedback from the 23 catalogued SMGs in the core region of 120kpc projected radius. Context. Deep spectroscopic surveys with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) have revealed that some of the brightest infrared sources in the sky correspond to concentrations of dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFG) at high redshift. Among these, the SPT2349-56 protocluster system at z = 4.304 is amongst the most extreme examples due to its high source density and integrated star formation rate. Aims. We conducted a deep Lyman-$\alpha$ line emission survey around SPT2349-56 using the Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) at Very Large Telescope (VLT) in order to characterize this uniquely dense environment. Methods. Taking advantage of the deep three-dimensional nature of this survey, we performed a sensitive search for Lyman-$\alpha$ emitters (LAEs) toward the core and northern extension of the protocluster, which correspond to the brightest infrared regions in this field. Using a smoothed narrowband image extracted from the MUSE datacube around the protocluster redshift, we searched for possible extended structures. Results. We identify only three LAEs at z = 4.3 in this field, in concordance with expectations for blank-fields, and an extended Lyman-$\alpha$ structure spatially associated with core of the protocluster. All the previously-identified DSFGs in this field are undetected in Lyman-$\alpha$ emission, consistent with the conspicuous dust obscuration in these systems. We find an extended Lyman-$\alpha$ structure, about $60 \times 60$ kpc$^{2}$ in size, and located 56 kpc west of the protocluster core. Three DSFGs coincide spatially with the location of this structure. We use spatially-resolved spectroscopy of a distant giant gravitational arc to test orientation effects on MgII absorption equivalent width (EW) and covering fraction (kappa) in the circumgalactic medium of a foreground star-forming galaxy (G1) at z~0.77. Forty-two spatially-binned arc positions uniformly sample impact parameters (D) to G1 between 10 and 30 kpc and azimuthal angles alpha between 30 and 90 degrees (minor axis). We find an EW-D anti-correlation, akin to that observed statistically in quasar absorber studies, and an apparent correlation of both EW and kappa with alpha, revealing a non-isotropic gas distribution. In line with our previous results on MgII kinematics suggesting the presence of outflows in G1, at minimum a simple 3-D static double-cone model (to represent the trace of bipolar outflows) is required to recreate the EW spatial distribution. The D and alpha values probed by the arc cannot confirm the presence of a disc, but the data highly disfavor a disc alone. Spatially extended halos of H I Ly$\alpha$ emission are now ubiquitously found around high-redshift star-forming galaxies. But our understanding of the nature and powering mechanisms of these halos is still hampered by the complex radiative transfer effects of the Ly$\alpha$ line and limited angular resolution. In this paper, we present resolved Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) observations of SGAS J122651.3+215220, a strongly-lensed pair of $L^{*}$ galaxies at $z=2.92$ embedded in a Ly$\alpha$ halo of $L_{Ly\alpha}=(6.2\pm1.3)\times10^{42}$ erg s$^{-1}$. Globally, the system shows a line profile that is markedly asymmetric and redshifted, but its width and peak shift vary significantly across the halo. By fitting the spatially binned Ly$\alpha$ spectra with a collection of radiative transfer galactic wind models, we infer a mean outflow expansion velocity of $\approx 211$ km s$^{-1}$, with higher values preferentially found on both sides of the system's major axis. The velocity of the outflow is validated with the blueshift of low-ionization metal absorption lines in the spectra of the central galaxies. We also identify a faint ($M_{1500} \approx -16.7$) companion detected in both Ly$\alpha$ and the continuum, whose properties are in agreement with a predicted population of satellite galaxies that contribute to the extended Ly$\alpha$ emission. The 6.4 keV Fe Ka emission line is a ubiquitous feature in X-ray spectra of AGN, and its properties track the interaction between the variable primary X-ray continuum and the surrounding structure from which it arises. We clarify the nature and origin of the narrow Fe Ka emission using X-ray spectral, timing, and imaging constraints, plus possible correlations to AGN and host galaxy properties, for 38 bright nearby AGN ($z<0.5$) from the BAT AGN Spectroscopic Survey. Modeling Chandra and XMM-Newton spectra, we computed line full-width half-maxima (FWHMs) and constructed Fe Ka line and 2-10 keV continuum light curves. The FWHM provides one estimate of the Fe Ka emitting region size, RFeKa, assuming virial motion. A second estimate comes from comparing the degree of correlation between the variability of the continuum and line-only light curves, compared to simulated light curves. Finally, we extracted Chandra radial profiles to place upper limits on RFeKa. We found that for 90% (21/24) of AGN with FWHM measurements, RFeKa is smaller than the fiducial dust sublimation radius, Rsub. Despite a wide range of variability properties, the constraints on the Fe Ka photon reprocessor size independently confirm that RFeKa is smaller than Rsub in 83% of AGN. Finally, the imaging analysis yields loose upper limits for all but two sources; notably, the Circinus Galaxy and NGC 1068 show significant but subdominant extended Fe Ka emission out to $\sim$100 and $\sim$800 pc, respectively. Based on independent constraints, we conclude that the majority of the narrow Fe Ka emission in typical AGN predominantly arises from regions smaller than and presumably inside Rsub, and thus it is associated either with the outer broad line region or outer accretion disk. Star-forming galaxies (SFGs) with stellar masses below $10^{10}\,M_\odot$ make up the bulk of the galaxy population at $z>2$. The properties of the cold gas in these galaxies can only be probed in very deep ALMA observations or by targeting strongly lensed galaxies. Here we report the results of a pilot survey using the Atacama Compact Array (ACA) of molecular gas in the most strongly magnified galaxies selected as giant arcs in optical data. The selection in rest-frame UV wavelengths ensures that sources are regular star forming galaxies, without a priori indications of intense dusty starburst activity. We conducted Band 4 and Band 7 observations to detect mid-$J$ CO, [C I] and thermal continuum as molecular gas tracers from four strongly lensed systems at $z\approx2-3$: our targets are SGAS J1226651.3+215220 (A and B), SGAS J003341.5+024217 and the Sunburst Arc. The measured molecular mass is then projected onto the source plane with detailed lens models developed from high resolution HST observations. Multiwavelength photometry is then used to obtain the intrinsic stellar mass and star formation rate via SED fitting. In only one of the sources are the three tracers robustly detected, while in the others they are either undetected or detected in continuum only. The implied molecular gass masses range from $4\times 10^{9}\,M_\odot$ in the detected source to an upper limit of $\lesssim 10^9\,M_\odot$ in the most magnified source. The inferred gas fraction and gas depletion timescale are found to lie approximately 0.5 to 1.0 dex below the established scaling relations based on previous studies of unlensed massive galaxies. Our results indicate that the cold gas content of intermediate to low mass galaxies should not be extrapolated from the trends seen in more massive high-$z$ galaxies. We present gravitational-arc tomography of the cool-warm enriched circumgalactic medium (CGM) of an isolated galaxy (``G1'') at $z \approx 0.77$. Combining VLT/MUSE adaptive-optics and Magellan/MagE echelle spectroscopy we obtain partially-resolved kinematics of MgII in absorption and [OII] in emission. The unique arc configuration allows us to probe 42 spatially independent arc positions transverse to G1, plus 4 positions in front of it. The transverse positions cover G1's minor and major axes at impact parameters of $\approx 10-30$ kpc and $\approx 60$ kpc, respectively. We observe a direct kinematic connection between the cool-warm enriched CGM (traced by MgII) and the interstellar medium (traced by [OII]). This provides strong evidence for the existence of an extended disc that co-rotates with the galaxy out to tens of kiloparsecs. The MgII velocity dispersion ($\sigma \approx 30-100$ km s$^{-1}$, depending on position) is of the same order as the modeled galaxy rotational velocity ($v_{\rm rot} \approx 80$ km s$^{-1}$), providing evidence for the presence of a turbulent and pressure-supported CGM component. We regard the absorption to be modulated by a galactic-scale outflow, as it offers a natural scenario for the observed line-of-sight dispersion and asymmetric profiles observed against both the arcs and the galaxy. An extended enriched co-rotating disc together with the signatures of a galactic outflow, are telltale signs of metal recycling in the $z\sim 1$ CGM., Comment: MNRAS accepted.
