More than 3000 spectroscopically confirmed Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) are presented in the Zwicky Transient Facility SN Ia Data Release 2 (ZTF DR2). In this paper, we detail the spectral properties of 482 SNe Ia near maximum light, up to a redshift limit of $z$ $\leq$ 0.06. We measure the velocities and pseudo-equivalent widths (pEW) of key spectral features (Si II $\lambda$5972 and Si II $\lambda$6355) and investigate the relation between the properties of the spectral features and the photometric properties from the SALT2 light-curve parameters as a function of spectroscopic sub-class. We discuss the non-negligible impact of host galaxy contamination on SN Ia spectral classifications, as well as investigate the accuracy of spectral template matching of the ZTF DR2 sample. We define a new subclass of underluminous SNe Ia (`04gs-like') that lie spectroscopically between normal SNe Ia and transitional 86G-like SNe Ia (stronger Si II $\lambda$5972 than normal SNe Ia but significantly weaker Ti II features than `86G-like' SNe). We model these `04gs-like' SN Ia spectra using the radiative-transfer spectral synthesis code tardis and show that cooler temperatures alone are unable to explain their spectra; some changes in elemental abundances are also required. However, the broad continuity in spectral properties seen from bright (`91T-like') to faint normal SN Ia, including the transitional and 91bg-like SNe Ia, suggests that variations within a single explosion model may be able to explain their behaviour.

Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) light curves have a secondary maximum that exists in the $r$, $i$, and near-infrared filters. The secondary maximum is relatively weak in the $r$ band, but holds the advantage that it is accessible, even at high redshift. We used Gaussian Process fitting to parameterise the light curves of 893 SNe Ia from the Zwicky Transient Facility's (ZTF) second data release (DR2), and we were able to extract information about the timing and strength of the secondary maximum. We found $>5\sigma$ correlations between the light curve decline rate ($\Delta m_{15}(g)$) and the timing and strength of the secondary maximum in the $r$ band. Whilst the timing of the secondary maximum in the $i$ band also correlates with $\Delta m_{15}(g)$, the strength of the secondary maximum in the $i$ band shows significant scatter as a function of $\Delta m_{15}(g)$. We found that the transparency timescales of 97 per cent of our sample are consistent with double detonation models, and that SNe Ia with small transparency timescales ($<$ 32 d) reside predominantly in locally red environments. We measured the total ejected mass for the normal SNe Ia in our sample using two methods, and both were consistent with medians of $1.3\ \pm \ 0.3$ and $1.2\ \pm\ 0.2$ solar masses. We find that the strength of the secondary maximum is a better standardisation parameter than the SALT light curve stretch ($x_1$). Finally, we identified a spectral feature in the $r$ band as Fe II, which strengthens during the onset of the secondary maximum. The same feature begins to strengthen at $<$ 3 d post maximum light in 91bg-like SNe. Finally, the correlation between $x_1$ and the strength of the secondary maximum was best fit with a broken line, with a split at $x_1^0\ =\ -0.5\ \pm\ 0.2$, suggestive of the existence of two populations of SNe Ia., Comment: 18 pages, 14 figures

The unprecedented statistics of detected Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) brought by the Zwicky Transient Facility enables us to probe the impact of the Large-Scale Structure on the properties of these objects. The goal of this paper is to explore the possible impact of the under-dense part of the large-scale structure on the intrinsic SALT2 light curve properties of SNe Ia and uncover possible biases in SN Ia analyses. With a volume-limited selection of ZTF-Cosmo-DR2 Type Ia supernovae overlapping with the SDSS-DR7 survey footprint, we investigate the distribution of their properties with regard to voids detected in the SDSS-DR7 galaxy sample. We further use Voronoi volumes as proxy for local density environments within the large-scale structure. We find a moderate dependency of the stretch toward the localisation around the void centre and none when considering colour. The local Voronoi volumes mostly affect the fraction of low/high stretch supernovae. With the current statistics available, we consider that the impact of high or low local density environment can be considered as a proxy for the colour of the host galaxy. Type Ia supernova (SNIa) are excellent probes of local distance, and the increasing sample sizes of SNIa have driven an increased need to study the associated systematic uncertainties and improve the standardisation methods in preparation for the next generation of cosmological surveys into the dark energy equation-of-state $w$. We aim to probe the potential change in the SNIa standardisation parameter $c$ with redshift and the host-galaxy of the supernova. Improving the standardisation of SNIa brightnesses will require accounting for the relationship between the host and the SNIa, and potential shifts in the SNIa standardisation parameters with redshift will cause biases in the recovered cosmology. Here, we assemble a volume-limited sample of ~3000 likely SNIa across a redshift range of $z = 0.015$ to $z = 0.36$. This sample is fitted with changing mass and redshift bins to determine the relationship between intrinsic properties of SNe Ia and their redshift and host galaxy parameters. We then investigate the colour-luminosity parameter $\beta$ as a further test of the SNIa standardisation process. We find that the changing colour distribution of SNe Ia with redshift is driven by dust at a confidence of $>4\sigma$. Additionally, we show a strong correlation between the host galaxy mass and the colour-luminosity coefficient $\beta$ ($> 4\sigma$), even when accounting for the quantity of dust in a host galaxy.

Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) cosmology relies on the estimation of lightcurve parameters to derive precision distances that leads to the estimation of cosmological parameters. The empirical SALT2 lightcurve modeling that relies on only two parameters, a stretch x1, and a color c, has been used by the community for almost two decades. In this paper we study the ability of the SALT2 model to fit the nearly 3000 cosmology-grade SN Ia lightcurves from the second release of the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) cosmology science working group. While the ZTF data was not used to train SALT2, the algorithm is modeling the ZTF SN Ia optical lightcurves remarkably well, except for lightcurve points prior to -10 d from maximum, where the training critically lacks statistics. We find that the lightcurve fitting is robust against the considered choice of phase-range, but we show the [-10; +40] d range to be optimal in terms of statistics and accuracy. We do not detect any significant features in the lightcurve fit residuals that could be connected to the host environment. Potential systematic population differences related to the SN Ia host properties might thus not be accountable for by the addition of extra lightcurve parameters. However, a small but significant inconsistency between residuals of blue- and red-SN Ia strongly suggests the existence of a phase-dependent color term, with potential implications for the use of SNe Ia in precision cosmology. We thus encourage modellers to explore this avenue and we emphasize the importance that SN Ia cosmology must include a SALT2 retraining to accurately model the lightcurves and avoid biasing the derivation of cosmological parameters., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures. As Type Ia supernova cosmology transitions from a statistics dominated to a systematics dominated era, it is crucial to understand leftover unexplained uncertainties affecting their luminosity, such as the ones stemming from astrophysical biases. Indeed, SNe Ia are standardisable candles, whose absolute magnitude reach a 0.15~mag scatter once empirical correlations with their lightcurve stretch and colour and with their environment are accounted for. In this paper, we investigate how the standardisation process of SNe Ia depends on environment, to ultimately reduce their scatter in magnitude, focusing on colour standardisation. We use the volume-limited ZTF SN Ia DR2 sample, which offers unprecedented statistics for the low redshift ($z<0.06$) range. We first study the colour distribution, focusing on the effects of dust, to then select a dustless subsample of objects from low stellar mass environments and from the outskirts of their host galaxies. We then look at the colour-residuals relation and its associated parameter $\beta$. Finally, we investigate the colour dependency of the environment-dependent magnitude offsets (steps), to try to disentangle intrinsic and extrinsic colour origin. Our sample probes well the red tail of the colour distribution, up to $c=0.8$. The dustless sample exhibits a significantly lower red tail ($4.6\sigma$) in comparison to the whole sample. This suggests that reddening above $c\geq0.2$ is dominated by host interstellar dust absorption. Looking at the colour-residuals relation, we find it to be linear with lightcurve colour. We show hints of a potential evolution of $\beta$ with host stellar mass at a $2.5\sigma$ level. Finally, unlike recent claims from the literature, we see no evolution of steps as a function of lightcurve colour, suggesting that dust may not be the dominating mechanism responsible for the environmental dependency of SNe Ia magnitude., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, submitted to Astronomy and Astrophysics

Understanding Type Ia supernovae (SNe~Ia) and the empirical standardisation relations that make them excellent distance indicators is vital to improving cosmological constraints. SN~Ia ``siblings", i.e. two or more SNe~Ia in the same host or parent galaxy offer a unique way to infer the standardisation relations and their diversity across the population. We analyse a sample of 25 SN~Ia pairs, observed homogeneously by the Zwicky Transient Factory (ZTF) to infer the SNe~Ia light curve width-luminosity and colour-luminosity parameters $\alpha$ and $\beta$. Using the pairwise constraints from siblings, allowing for a diversity in the standardisation relations, we find $\alpha = 0.218 \pm 0.055 $ and $\beta = 3.084 \pm 0.312$, respectively, with a dispersion in $\alpha$ and $\beta$ of $\leq 0.195$ and $\leq 0.923$, respectively, at 95$\%$ C.L. While the median dispersion is large, the values within $\sim 1 \sigma$ are consistent with no dispersion. Hence, fitting for a single global standardisation relation, we find $\alpha = 0.228 \pm 0.029 $ and $\beta = 3.160 \pm 0.191$. We find a very small intrinsic scatter of the siblings sample $\sigma_{\rm int} \leq 0.10$ at 95\% C.L. compared to $\sigma_{\rm int} = 0.22 \pm 0.04$ when computing the scatter using the Hubble residuals without comparing them as siblings. Splitting the sample based on host galaxy stellar mass, we find that SNe~Ia in both subsamples have consistent $\alpha$ and $\beta$. The $\beta$ value is consistent with the value for the cosmological sample. However, we find a higher $\alpha$ by $\sim 2.5 - 3.5 \sigma$. The high $\alpha$ is driven by low $x_1$ pairs, potentially suggesting that the slow and fast declining SN~Ia have different slopes of the width-luminosity relation. Understanding the impact of the astrophysical environment on Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) properties is crucial to minimize systematic uncertainties in cosmological analyses based on this probe. We investigate the dependence of the SN Ia SALT2.4 light-curve stretch on the distance from their nearest galaxy cluster to study a potential effect of the intracluster medium (ICM) environment on SN Ia intrinsic properties. We use the largest SN Ia sample to date and cross-match it with existing X-ray, Sunyaev-Zel'dovich, and optical cluster catalogs in order to study the dependence between stretch and distance to the nearest detected cluster from each SN Ia. We model the underlying stretch distribution with a Gaussian mixture with relative amplitudes that depend on redshift and cluster-centric distance. We find a significant improvement of the fit quality of the stretch distribution if we include the distance-dependant term in the model with a variation of the Akaike information criterion $\rm{\Delta AIC} = -10.2$. Because of the known correlation between galaxy age and distance from cluster center, this supports previous evidence that the age of the stellar population is the underlying driver of the bimodial shape of the SN Ia stretch distribution. We further compute the evolution of the fraction of quenched galaxies as a function of distance with respect to cluster center from our best-fit model of the SNe Ia stretch distribution and compare it to previous results obtained from $H\alpha$ line measurements, optical broadband photometry, and simulations. We find our estimate to be compatible with these results. The results of this work indicate that SNe Ia searches at high redshift targeted towards clusters to maximize detection probability should be considered with caution as the stretch distribution of the detected sample would be strongly biased towards the old sub-population of SNe Ia., Comment: Submitted to Astronomy & Astrophysics

To get distances, Type Ia Supernovae magnitudes are corrected for their correlation with lightcurve width and colour. Here we investigate how this standardisation is affected by the SN environment, with the aim to reduce scatter and improve standardisation. We first study the SN Ia stretch distribution, as well as its dependence on environment, as characterised by local and global (g-z) colour and stellar mass. We then look at the standardisation parameter $\alpha$, which accounts for the correlation between residuals and stretch, along with its environment dependence and linearity. We finally compute magnitude offsets between SNe in different astrophysical environments after colour and stretch standardisation, aka steps. This analysis is made possible due to the unprecedented statistics of the ZTF SN Ia DR2 volume-limited sample. The stretch distribution exhibits a bimodal behaviour, as previously found in literature. However, we find the distribution means to decrease with host stellar mass at a 9.0$\sigma$ significance. We demonstrate, at the 14.3$\sigma$ level, that the stretch-magnitude relation is non-linear, challenging the usual linear stretch-residuals relation. Fitting for a broken-$\alpha$ model, we indeed find two different slopes between stretch regimes ($x_1<-0.49\pm0.06$): $\alpha_{low}=0.28\pm0.01$ and $\alpha_{high}=0.09\pm0.01$, a $\Delta_{\alpha}=-0.19\pm0.01$ difference. As the relative proportion of SNe Ia in the high-/low-stretch modes evolves with redshift and environment, this implies that a linear $\alpha$ also evolves with redshift and environment. Concerning the environmental magnitude offset $\gamma$, we find it to be greater than 0.14 mag regardless of the considered environmental tracer used (local or global colour and stellar mass), all measured at the $\geq 6\sigma$ level, increased to $\sim0.18\pm0.01$ mag when accounting for the stretch-non linearity., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures, submitted to Astronomy and Astrophysics

SNe Ia are used to determine the distance-redshift relation and build the Hubble diagram. Neglecting their host-galaxy peculiar velocities (PVs) may bias the measurement of cosmological parameters. The smaller the redshift, the larger the effect is. We use realistic simulations of SNe Ia observed by the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) to investigate the effect of different methods to take into account PVs. We study the impact of neglecting galaxy PVs and their correlations in an analysis of the SNe Ia Hubble diagram. We find that it is necessary to use the PV full covariance matrix computed from the velocity power spectrum to take into account the sample variance. Considering the results we have obtained using simulations, we determine the PV systematic effects in the context of the ZTF DR2 SNe Ia sample. We determine the PV impact on the intercept of the Hubble diagram, $a_B$, which is directly linked to the measurement of $H_0$. We show that not taking into account PVs and their correlations results in a shift of the $H_0$ value of about $1.0$km.s$^{-1}$.Mpc$^{-1}$ and a slight underestimation of the $H_0$ error bar., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

The Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) was expected to detect more than one strong gravitationally-lensed supernova (glSN) per year, but only one event was identified in the first four years of the survey. This work investigates selection biases in the search strategy that could explain the discrepancy and revise discovery predictions. We present simulations of realistic lightcurves for lensed thermonuclear (glSNIa) and core-collapse supernova (glCCSN) explosions over a span of 5.33 years of the survey, utilizing the actual observation logs of ZTF. We find that the magnitude limit in spectroscopic screening significantly biases the selection towards highly magnified glSNe, for which the detection rates are consistent with the identification of a single object by ZTF. To reach the higher predicted rate of detections requires an optimization of the identification criteria for fainter objects. We find that around 1.36 (3.08) Type Ia SNe (CCSNe) are identifiable with the magnification method per year in ZTF, but when applying the magnitude cut of m < 19 mag, the detection rates decrease to 0.17 (0.32) per year. We compare our simulations with the previously found lensed Type Ia SNe, iPTF16geu and SN Zwicky, and conclude that considering the bias towards highly magnified events, the findings are within expectations in terms of detection rates and lensing properties of the systems. In addition, we provide a set of selection cuts based on simple observables to distinguish glSNe from regular, unlensed, supernovae to select potential candidates for spectroscopic and high-spatial resolution follow-up campaigns. We find optimal cuts in observed colours $g-r$, $g-i$, and $r-i$ as well as in the colour SALT2 fit parameter. The supernova remnant SNR 0540-69.3, twin of the Crab Nebula, offers an excellent opportunity to study the continuum emission from a young pulsar and pulsar-wind nebula (PWN). We present observations taken with the VLT instruments MUSE and X-shooter in the wavelength range 3000-25,000 \r{A}, which allow us to study spatial variations of the optical spectra, along with the first near-infrared (NIR) spectrum of the source. We model the optical spectra with a power law (PL) $F_\nu\propto\nu^{-\alpha}$ and find clear spatial variations (including a torus-jet structure) in the spectral index across the PWN. Generally, we find spectral hardening toward the outer parts, from $\alpha\sim1.1$ to $\sim0.1$, which may indicate particle reacceleration by the PWN shock at the inner edge of the ejecta or alternatively time variability of the pulsar wind. The optical-NIR spectrum of the PWN is best described by a broken PL, confirming that several breaks are needed to model the full spectral energy distribution of the PWN, suggesting the presence of more than one particle population. Finally, subtracting the PWN contribution from the pulsar spectrum we find that the spectrum is best described with a broken-PL model with a flat and a positive spectral index, in contrast to the Crab pulsar that has a negative spectral index and no break in the optical. Obtaining spectroscopic observations of the progenitors of core-collapse supernovae is often unfeasible due to an inherent lack of knowledge as to which stars will go supernova and when they will explode. In this letter, we present photometric and spectroscopic observations of the progenitor activity of SN 2023fyq in the preceding 150 days before the He-rich progenitor exploded as a Type Ibn supernova. The progenitor of SN 2023fyq shows an exponential rise in flux prior to core-collapse. Complex He I emission line features are observed, with a P-Cygni like profile, as well as an evolving broad base with velocities on the order of 10,000 km/s, possibly due to electron scattering. The luminosity and evolution of SN 2023fyq are consistent with a faint Type Ibn, reaching a peak r-band magnitude of 18.1 mag, although there is some uncertainty in the distance to the host, NGC 4388, located in the Virgo cluster. We present additional evidence of asymmetric He-rich material being present prior to the explosion of SN 2023fyq, as well as after, suggesting this material has survived the ejecta-CSM interaction. Broad [O I] and the Ca II triplet lines are observed at late phases, confirming that SN 2023fyq was a genuine supernova rather than a non-terminal interacting transient. We present an extensive analysis of the optical and UV properties of AT2023clx, the closest TDE to date, that occurred in the nucleus of the interacting LINER galaxy, NGC3799 (z=0.01107). From several standard methods, we estimate the mass of the central SMBH to be ~ 10^6 Msol. After correcting for the host reddening (E(B-V) = 0.177 mag) we measured its peak absolute g-band magnitude to be -18.25\pm0.05 mag, and its peak bolometric luminosity to be L_pk=(3.24\pm0.36)x10^43erg/s, making AT2023clx an intermediate luminosity TDE. The first distinctive feature of AT2023clx is that it rose to peak within only 10.4\pm2.5 days, making it the fastest rising TDE to date. Our SMBH mass estimate rules out the possibility of an intermediate mass BH as the reason of the fast rise. Dense spectral follow-up revealed a blue continuum that cools slowly and broad Balmer and HeII lines as well as weak HeI emission, features that are typically seen in TDEs. A flat Balmer decrement (~ 1.58) suggests that the lines are collisionally excited rather than being produced via photoionisation, as in typical active galactic nuclei. A second distinctive feature, seen for the first time in TDE spectra, is a sharp, narrow emission peak at a rest wavelength of ~6353 A. This feature is clearly visible up to 10d post-peak; we attribute it to clumpy material preceding the bulk outflow, and manifested as a high-velocity component of Ha (-9584km/s). The third distinctive feature is a break observed in the near-UV light curves that is reflected as a dip in the temperature evolution around ~18-28 days post-peak. Combining these findings, we propose a scenario for AT2023clx involving the disruption of a very low-mass star (<=0.1Msol) with an outflow launched in our line-of-sight with disruption properties that led to circularisation and prompt and efficient accretion disc formation, observed through a low-density photosphere., Comment: Submitted to A&A. SN 2021adxl is a slowly evolving, luminous, Type IIn supernova with asymmetric emission line profiles, similar to the well-studied SN 2010jl. We present extensive optical, near-ultraviolet, and near-infrared photometry and spectroscopy covering ~1.5 years post discovery. SN 2021adxl occurred in an unusual environment, atop a vigorously star-forming region that is offset from its host galaxy core. The appearance of Ly{\alpha}, O II, as well as the compact core, would classify the host of SN 2021adxl as a Blueberry galaxy, analogous to the higher redshift Green Pea galaxies. Using several abundance indicators, we find a metallicity of the explosion environment of only 10% solar, the lowest reported metallicity for a Type IIn SN environment. SN 2021adxl reaches a peak magnitude of r ~ -20.2 mag and since discovery, SN 2021adxl has faded by only ~4 magnitudes in the r band with a cumulative radiated energy of ~1.5e50 erg over 18 months. SN 2021adxl shows strong signs of interaction with a complex circumstellar medium, seen by the detection of X-rays, revealed by the detection of coronal emission lines, and through multi-component hydrogen and helium profiles. In order to further understand this interaction, we model the H{\alpha} profile using a Monte-Carlo electron scattering code. The blueshifted high-velocity component is consistent with emission from a radially thin, spherical shell resulting in the broad emission components due to electron scattering. Using the velocity evolution of this emitting shell, we find that the SN ejecta collide with circumstellar material of at least 5 Msun, assuming a steady-state mass-loss rate of 4-6e-3 Msun per year for the first ~200 days of evolution. Continuing the observations of SN 2021adxl may reveal signatures of dust formation or an infrared excess, similar to that seen for SN 2010jl., Comment: 21 pages with 27 Figures. Submitted to A&A. Observing a supernova explosion shortly after it occurs can reveal important information about the physics of stellar explosions and the nature of the progenitor stars of supernovae (SNe). When a star with a well-defined edge explodes in vacuum, the first photons to escape from its surface appear as a brief shock-breakout flare. The duration of this flare can extend to at most a few hours even for nonspherical breakouts from supergiant stars, after which the explosion ejecta should expand and cool. Alternatively, for stars exploding within a distribution of sufficiently dense optically thick circumstellar material, the first photons escape from the material beyond the stellar edge, and the duration of the initial flare can extend to several days, during which the escaping emission indicates photospheric heating. The difficulty in detecting SN explosions promptly after the event has so far limited data regarding supergiant stellar explosions mostly to serendipitous observations that, owing to the lack of ultraviolet (UV) data, were unable to determine whether the early emission is heating or cooling, and hence the nature of the early explosion event. Here, we report observations of SN 2023ixf in the nearby galaxy M101, covering the early days of the event. Using UV spectroscopy from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) as well as a comprehensive set of additional multiwavelength observations, we trace the photometric and spectroscopic evolution of the event and are able to temporally resolve the emergence and evolution of the SN emission.

SN\,2020zbf is a hydrogen-poor superluminous supernova (SLSN) at $z = 0.1947$ that shows conspicuous \ion{C}{II} features at early times, in contrast to the majority of H-poor SLSNe. Its peak magnitude is $M_{\rm g}$ = $-21.2$~mag and its rise time ($\lesssim 26.4$ days from first light) places SN\,2020zbf among the fastest rising type I SLSNe. We used spectra taken from ultraviolet (UV) to near-infrared wavelengths to identify spectral features. We paid particular attention to the \ion{C}{II} lines as they present distinctive characteristics when compared to other events. We also analyzed UV and optical photometric data and modeled the light curves considering three different powering mechanisms: radioactive decay of $^{56}$Ni, magnetar spin-down, and circumstellar medium (CSM) interaction. The spectra of SN\,2020zbf match the model spectra of a C-rich low-mass magnetar-powered supernova model well. This is consistent with our light curve modeling, which supports a magnetar-powered event with an ejecta mass $M_{\rm ej}$ = 1.5~$\rm M_\odot$. However, we cannot discard the CSM-interaction model as it may also reproduce the observed features. The interaction with H-poor, carbon-oxygen CSM near peak light could explain the presence of \ion{C}{II} emission lines. A short plateau in the light curve around 35 -- 45 days after peak, in combination with the presence of an emission line at 6580~\AA,\ can also be interpreted as being due to a late interaction with an extended H-rich CSM. Both the magnetar and CSM-interaction models of SN\,2020zbf indicate that the progenitor mass at the time of explosion is between 2 and 5~$\rm M_\odot$. Modeling the spectral energy distribution of the host galaxy reveals a host mass of 10$^{8.7}$~$\rm M_\odot$, a star formation rate of 0.24$^{+0.41}_{-0.12}$~$\rm M_\odot$~yr$^{-1}$, and a metallicity of $\sim$ 0.4~$\rm Z_\odot$., Comment: Accepted in A&A. 26 pages, 22 figures

Hydrogen-rich Type II supernovae (SNe II) are the most frequently observed class of core-collapse SNe (CCSNe). However, most studies that analyse large samples of SNe II lack events with absolute peak magnitudes brighter than -18.5 mag at rest-frame optical wavelengths. Thanks to modern surveys, the detected number of such luminous SNe II (LSNe II) is growing. There exist several mechanisms that could produce luminous SNe II. The most popular propose either the presence of a central engine (a magnetar gradually spinning down or a black hole accreting fallback material) or the interaction of supernova ejecta with circumstellar material (CSM) that turns kinetic energy into radiation energy. In this work, we study the light curves and spectral series of a small sample of six LSNe II that show peculiarities in their H$\alpha$ profile, to attempt to understand the underlying powering mechanism. We favour an interaction scenario with CSM that is not dense enough to be optically thick to electron scattering on large scales -- thus, no narrow emission lines are observed. This conclusion is based on the observed light curve (higher luminosity, fast decline, blue colours) and spectral features (lack of persistent narrow lines, broad H$\alpha$ emission, lack of H$\alpha$ absorption, weak or nonexistent metal lines) together with comparison to other luminous events available in the literature. We report on our study of supernova (SN) 2022xxf based on observations obtained during the first four months of its evolution. The light curves (LCs) display two humps of similar maximum brightness separated by 75 days, unprecedented for a broad-lined (BL) Type Ic supernova (SN IcBL). SN 2022xxf is the most nearby SN IcBL to date (in NGC 3705, $z = 0.0037$, at a distance of about 20 Mpc). Optical and near-infrared photometry and spectroscopy are used to identify the energy source powering the LC. Nearly 50 epochs of high signal-to-noise-ratio spectroscopy were obtained within 130 days, comprising an unparalleled dataset for a SN IcBL, and one of the best-sampled SN datasets to date. The global spectral appearance and evolution of SN 2022xxf points to typical SN Ic/IcBL, with broad features (up to $\sim14000$ km s$^{-1}$) and a gradual transition from the photospheric to the nebular phase. However, narrow emission lines (corresponding to $\sim1000-2500$ km s$^{-1}$) are present in the spectra from the time of the second rise, suggesting slower-moving circumstellar material (CSM). These lines are subtle, in comparison to the typical strong narrow lines of CSM-interacting SNe, for example, Type IIn, Ibn, and Icn, but some are readily noticeable at late times such as in Mg I $\lambda$5170 and [O I] $\lambda$5577. Unusually, the near-infrared spectra show narrow line peaks in a number of features formed by ions of O and Mg. We infer the presence of CSM that is free of H and He. We propose that the radiative energy from the ejecta-CSM interaction is a plausible explanation for the second LC hump. This interaction scenario is supported by the color evolution, which progresses to the blue as the light curve evolves along the second hump, and the slow second rise and subsequent rapid LC drop. We present and analyze observations of the Type Ib supernova (SN) 2019odp (a.k.a ZTF19abqwtfu) covering epochs within days of the explosion to the nebular phase at 360 d post-explosion. We discuss them in the context of recombination cooling emission for the early excess emission and consider progenitor models based on the nebular phase spectra. Our observations include photometric observations mainly in the optical and low to medium-resolution spectroscopic observations covering the complete observable time-range. We expand on existing methods to derive oxygen mass estimates from nebular phase spectroscopy. Our spectroscopic observations confirm the presence of He in the SN ejecta and we thus (re)classify it as a Type Ib supernova. From the pseudo-bolometric lightcurve we estimate a high ejecta mass $M_\text{ej} \sim 4 - 7~M_\odot$. The high ejecta mass, large nebular [O I]/[Ca II] line flux ratio ($1.2 - 1.9$) and an oxygen mass above $\gtrapprox 0.5\, M_\odot$ point towards a progenitor with pre-explosion mass higher than $18\,M_\odot$. The compact nature of the progenitor ($\lesssim 10\,R_\odot$) suggests a Wolf-Rayet (WR) star as progenitor., Comment: Submitted to A&A

Context: The extreme luminosity of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) makes them powerful beacons for studies of the distant Universe. The most luminous bursts are typically detected at moderate/high redshift, where the volume for seeing such rare events is maximized and the star-formation activity is greater than at z = 0. For distant events, not all observations are feasible, such as at TeV energies. Aims: Here we present a spectroscopic redshift measurement for the exceptional GRB 221009A, the brightest GRB observed to date with emission extending well into the TeV regime. Methods: We used the X-shooter spectrograph at the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT) to obtain simultaneous optical to near-IR spectroscopy of the burst afterglow 0.5 days after the explosion. Results: The spectra exhibit both absorption and emission lines from material in a host galaxy at z = 0.151. Thus GRB 221009A was a relatively nearby burst with a luminosity distance of 745 Mpc. Its host galaxy properties (star-formation rate and metallicity) are consistent with those of LGRB hosts at low redshift. This redshift measurement yields information on the energy of the burst. The inferred isotropic energy release, $E_{\rm iso} > 5 \times 10^{54}$ erg, lies at the high end of the distribution, making GRB 221009A one of the nearest and also most energetic GRBs observed to date. We present linear polarimetry for seven hydrogen-poor superluminous supernovae (SLSNe-I). For SN 2017gci, for which we present two epochs of spectropolarimetry at +3 d and +29 d post-peak in rest frame, accompanied by four epochs of imaging polarimetry up to +108 d. The spectropolarimetry at +3 d shows increasing polarisation degree P towards the redder wavelengths and exhibits signs of axial symmetry, but at +29 d P=0 throughout the spectrum implying that the photosphere of SN 2017gci evolved from a slightly aspherical configuration to a more spherical one in the first month post-peak. However, an increase of P to 0.5% at +55 d accompanied by a different orientation of the axial symmetry compared to +3 d implies the presence of additional sources of polarisation at this phase. The increase in polarisation is possibly caused by interaction with circumstellar matter as already suggested by a knee in the light curve and a possible detection of broad Ha emission. We also analysed the sample of all 16 SLSNe-I with polarimetry to date. The data taken during the early spectroscopic phase show consistently low P indicating spherical photospheres. No clear relation between the polarimetry and spectral phase was seen when the spectra resemble Type Ic SNe during the photospheric and nebular phases. The light curve decline rate also shows no clear relation with the polarisation properties. While only slow-evolving SLSNe-I have shown non-zero P, the fast-evolving ones have not been observed at sufficiently late times to conclude that none of them exhibit changing P. However, the four SLSNe-I with increasing polarisation degree also have irregular light curve declines. For up to half of them, the photometric, spectroscopic and polarimetric properties are affected by CSM interaction. Thanks to the advent of large-scale optical surveys, a diverse set of flares from the nuclear regions of galaxies has recently been discovered. These include the disruption of stars by supermassive black holes at the centers of galaxies - nuclear transients known as tidal disruption events (TDEs). Active galactic nuclei (AGN) can show extreme changes in the brightness and emission line intensities, often referred to as changing-look AGN (CLAGN). Given the physical and observational similarities, the interpretation and distinction of nuclear transients as CLAGN or TDEs remains difficult. One of the obstacles of making progress in the field is the lack of well-sampled data of long-lived nuclear outbursts in AGN. Here, we study PS16dtm, a nuclear transient in a Narrow Line Seyfert 1 (NLSy1) galaxy, which has been proposed to be a TDE candidate. Our aim is to study the spectroscopic and photometric properties of PS16dtm, in order to better understand the outbursts originating in NLSy1 galaxies. Our extensive multiwavelength follow-up that spans around 2000 days includes photometry and spectroscopy in the UV/optical, as well as mid-infrared (MIR) and X-ray observations. Furthermore, we improved an existing semiempirical model in order to reproduce the spectra and study the evolution of the spectral lines. The UV/optical light curve shows a double peak at $\sim50$ and $\sim100$ days after the first detection, and it declines and flattens afterward, reaching preoutburst levels after 2000 days of monitoring. The MIR light curve rises almost simultaneously with the optical, but unlike the UV/optical which is approaching the preoutburst levels in the last epochs of our observations, the MIR emission is still rising at the time of writing. The optical spectra show broad Balmer features and the strongest broad Fe II emission ever detected in a nuclear transient. If high-mass stars (>20-25 Msun) are the progenitors of stripped-envelope (SE) supernovae (SNe), their massive ejecta should lead to broad, long-duration lightcurves (LCs). Instead, literature samples of SE~SNe have reported relatively narrow LCs with ejecta masses between 1-4 Msun that favor progenitors <20-25 Msun. Working with the untargeted sample of (i)PTF SNe to better constrain their rates, we search for SE~SNe with broad LCs. Using a simple LC stretch compared to a template to measure broadness, we identified eight significantly broader Type~Ibc SNe after applying quantitative sample selection criteria. The LCs, colors, and spectra of these SNe are found to evolve more slowly relative to typical Type~Ibc SNe, proportional with the stretch. Bolometric LC modeling and their nebular spectra indicate high ejecta and nickel masses, assuming radioactive decay powering. Additionally, these objects are preferentially located in low-metallicity host galaxies with high star-formation rates, which may account for their massive progenitors, as well as their relative absence from the literature. Our study thus supports the link between broad LCs (as measured by stretch) and high-mass progenitor stars in SE~SNe with independent evidence from bolometric LC modeling, nebular spectra, host environment properties, and photometric evolution. In the first systematic search of its kind using an untargeted sample, we use the stretch distribution to identify a higher than previously appreciated fraction of SE~SNe with broad LCs (~13%). Correcting for Malmquist and LC duration observational biases, we conservatively estimate that a minimum of ~6% of SE~SNe are consistent with high-mass progenitors. This result has implications for the progenitor channels of SE~SNe, late stages of massive stellar evolution, oxygen fraction in the universe, and formation channels for stellar-mass black holes.(Abridged), Comment: 38 pages, 24 figures, 12 tables. We present the discovery and analysis of SN\,2022oqm, a Type Ic supernova (SN) detected $<1$\,day after explosion. The SN rises to a blue and short-lived (2\,days) initial peak. Early-time spectral observations of SN\,2022oqm show a hot (40,000\,K) continuum with high-ionization C and O absorption features at velocities of 4000\,km\,s$^{-1}$, while its photospheric radius expands at 20,000\,\kms, indicating a pre-existing distribution of expanding C/O material. After $\sim2.5$\,days, both the spectrum and light curves evolve into those of a typical SN Ic, with line velocities of $\sim10,000$\,km\,s$^{-1}$, in agreement with the photospheric radius evolution. The optical light curves reach a second peak at $t\approx15$\,days. By $t=60$\,days, the spectrum of \oqm\ becomes nearly nebular, displaying strong \ion{Ca}{2} and [\ion{Ca}{2}] emission with no detectable [\ion{O}{1}], marking this event as Ca-rich. The early behavior can be explained by $10^{-3}$\,\msun\ of optically thin circumstellar material (CSM) surrounding either (1) a massive compact progenitor such as a Wolf-Rayet star, (2) a massive stripped progenitor with an extended envelope, or (3) a binary system with a white dwarf. We propose that the early-time light curve is powered by both interaction of the ejecta with the optically thin CSM and shock cooling (in the massive-star scenario). The observations can be explained by CSM that is optically thick to X-ray photons, is optically thick in the lines as seen in the spectra, and is optically thin to visible-light continuum photons that come either from downscattered X-rays or from the shock-heated ejecta. We present the results from multi-wavelength observations of a transient discovered during the follow-up of S191213g, a gravitational wave (GW) event reported by the LIGO-Virgo Collaboration as a possible binary neutron star merger in a low latency search. This search yielded SN2019wxt, a young transient in a galaxy whose sky position (in the 80\% GW contour) and distance ($\sim$150\,Mpc) were plausibly compatible with the localisation uncertainty of the GW event. Initially, the transient's tightly constrained age, its relatively faint peak magnitude ($M_i \sim -16.7$\,mag) and the $r-$band decline rate of $\sim 1$\,mag per 5\,days appeared suggestive of a compact binary merger. However, SN2019wxt spectroscopically resembled a type Ib supernova, and analysis of the optical-near-infrared evolution rapidly led to the conclusion that while it could not be associated with S191213g, it nevertheless represented an extreme outcome of stellar evolution. By modelling the light curve, we estimated an ejecta mass of $\sim 0.1\,M_\odot$, with $^{56}$Ni comprising $\sim 20\%$ of this. We were broadly able to reproduce its spectral evolution with a composition dominated by helium and oxygen, with trace amounts of calcium. We considered various progenitors that could give rise to the observed properties of SN2019wxt, and concluded that an ultra-stripped origin in a binary system is the most likely explanation. Disentangling electromagnetic counterparts to GW events from transients such as SN2019wxt is challenging: in a bid to characterise the level of contamination, we estimated the rate of events with properties comparable to those of SN2019wxt and found that $\sim 1$ such event per week can occur within the typical GW localisation area of O4 alerts out to a luminosity distance of 500\,Mpc, beyond which it would become fainter than the typical depth of current electromagnetic follow-up campaigns., Comment: By the ENGRAVE collaboration (engrave-eso.org). 35 pages, 20 figures, final version accepted by A&A

SN\,2020qlb (ZTF20abobpcb) is a hydrogen-poor superluminous supernova (SLSN-I) that is among the most luminous (maximum M$_{g} = -22.25$ mag) and that has one of the longest rise times (77 days from explosion to maximum). We estimate the total radiated energy to be $>2.1\times10^{51}$ erg. SN\,2020qlb has a well-sampled light curve that exhibits clear near and post peak undulations, a phenomenon seen in other SLSNe, whose physical origin is still unknown. We discuss the potential power source of this immense explosion as well as the mechanisms behind its observed light curve undulations. We analyze photospheric spectra and compare them to other SLSNe-I. We constructed the bolometric light curve using photometry from a large data set of observations from the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF), Liverpool Telescope (LT), and Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory and compare it with radioactive, circumstellar interaction and magnetar models. Model residuals and light curve polynomial fit residuals are analyzed to estimate the undulation timescale and amplitude. We also determine host galaxy properties based on imaging and spectroscopy data, including a detection of the [O III]$\lambda$4363, auroral line, allowing for a direct metallicity measurement. We rule out the Arnett $^{56}$Ni decay model for SN\,2020qlb's light curve due to unphysical parameter results. Our most favored power source is the magnetic dipole spin-down energy deposition of a magnetar. Two to three near peak oscillations, intriguingly similar to those of SN\,2015bn, were found in the magnetar model residuals with a timescale of $32\pm6$ days and an amplitude of 6$\%$ of peak luminosity. We rule out centrally located undulation sources due to timescale considerations; and we favor the result of ejecta interactions with circumstellar material (CSM) density fluctuations as the source of the undulations., Comment: 22 pages, 25 figures, submitted to A&A

The merger of two compact objects of which at least one is a neutron star is signalled by transient electromagnetic emission in a kilonova (KN). This event is accompanied by gravitational waves and possibly other radiation messengers such as neutrinos or cosmic rays. The electromagnetic emission arises from the radioactive decay of heavy $r-$process elements synthesized in the material ejected during and after the merger. In this paper we show that the analysis of KNe light curves can provide cosmological distance measurements and constrain the properties of the ejecta. In this respect, MAAT, the new Integral Field Unit in the OSIRIS spectrograph on the $10.4$ m Gran Telescopio CANARIAS (GTC), is well suited for the study of KNe by performing absolute spectro-photometry over the entire 3600-10000 Angstron spectral range. Here, we study the most representative cases regarding the scientific interest of KNe from binary neutron stars, and we evaluate the observational prospects and performance of MAAT on the GTC to do the following: a) study the impact of the equation of state on the KN light curve, and determine to what extent bounds on neutron star (NS) radii or compactness deriving from KN peak magnitudes can be identified and b) measure the Hubble constant, $H_0$, with precision improved by up to 40$\%$, when both gravitational wave data and photometric-light curves are used. Currently time-domain astronomy can scan the entire sky on a daily basis, discovering thousands of interesting transients every night. Classifying the ever-increasing number of new transients is one of the main challenges for the astronomical community. One solution that addresses this issue is the robotically controlled Spectral Energy Distribution Machine (SEDM) which supports the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF). SEDM with its pipeline PYSEDM demonstrates that real-time robotic spectroscopic classification is feasible. In an effort to improve the quality of the current SEDM data, we present here two new modules, BYECR and CONTSEP. The first removes contamination from cosmic rays, and the second removes contamination from non-target light. These new modules are part of the automated PYSEDM pipeline and fully integrated with the whole process. Employing BYECR and CONTSEP modules together automatically extracts more spectra than the current PYSEDM pipeline. Using SNID classification results, the new modules show an improvement in the classification rate and accuracy of 2.8% and 1.7%, respectively, while the strength of the cross-correlation remains the same. Improvements to the SEDM astrometry would further boost the improvement of the CONTSEP module. This kind of robotic follow-up with a fully automated pipeline has the potential to provide the spectroscopic classifications for the transients discovered by ZTF and also by the Rubin Observatory's Legacy Survey of Space and Time., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in PASP

We present analysis of the light curves (LCs) of 77 hydrogen-poor superluminous supernovae (SLSNe-I) discovered during the Zwicky Transient Facility Phase-I operation. We find that the majority (67\%) of the sample can be fit equally well by both magnetar and ejecta-circumstellar medium (CSM) interaction plus $^{56}$Ni decay models. This implies that LCs alone can not unambiguously constrain the physical power sources for a SLSN-I. However, 23\% of the sample show inverted V-shape, steep declining LCs or features of long rise and fast post-peak decay, which are better described by the CSM+Ni model. The remaining 10\% of the sample favor the magnetar model. Moreover, our analysis shows that the LC undulations are quite common, with a fraction of $18-44\% $ in our gold sample. Among those strongly undulating events, about 62\% of them are found to be CSM-favored, implying that the undulations tend to occur in the CSM-favored events. Undulations show a wide range in energy and duration, with median values (and 1$\sigma$ errors) being as $1.7\%^{+1.5\%}_{-0.7\%}\,\rm E_{\rm rad,total}$ and $28.8^{+14.4}_{-9.1}$\,days, respectively. Our analysis of the undulation time scales suggests that intrinsic temporal variations of the central engine can explain half of the undulating events, while CSM interaction can account for the majority of the sample. Finally, all of the well-observed He-rich SLSNe-Ib have either strongly undulating LCs or the LCs are much better fit by the CSM+Ni model. These observations imply that their progenitor stars have not had enough time to lose all of the He-envelopes before supernova explosions, and H-poor CSM are likely to present in these events., Comment: 30 pages, 20 figures, Accepted by APJ

During the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) Phase-I operation, 78 hydrogen-poor superluminous supernovae (SLSNe-I) were discovered in less than three years, making up the largest sample from a single survey. This paper (Paper I) presents the data, including the optical/ultraviolet light curves and classification spectra, while Paper II in this series will focus on the detailed analysis of the light curves and modeling. Our photometry is primarily taken by the ZTF in the $g,r,i$ bands, and with additional data from other ground-based facilities and Swift. The events of our sample cover a redshift range of $z = 0.06 - 0.67$, with a median and $1\sigma$ error (16\% and 84\% percentiles) $z_{\rm med} = 0.265^{+0.143}_{-0.135}$. The peak luminosity covers $-22.8\,{\rm mag} \leq M_{g,\rm peak} \leq -19.8$\,mag, with a median value of $-21.48^{+1.13}_{-0.61}$\,mag. Their light curves evolve slowly with the mean rest-frame rise time of $t_{\rm rise} = 41.9\pm17.8$\,days. The luminosity and time scale distributions suggest that low luminosity SLSNe-I with peak luminosity $\sim -20$\,mag or extremely fast rising events ($<10$\,days) exist but are rare. We confirm previous findings that slowly rising SLSNe-I also tend to fade slowly. The rest-frame color and temperature evolution show large scatters, suggesting that the SLSN-I population may have diverse spectral energy distributions. The peak rest-frame color shows a moderate correlation with the peak absolute magnitude, i.e. brighter SLSNe-I tend to have bluer colors. Supernova (SN) siblings -- two or more SNe in the same parent galaxy -- are useful tools for exploring progenitor stellar populations as well as properties of the host galaxies such as distance, star formation rate, dust extinction, and metallicity. Since the average SN rate for a Milky Way-type galaxy is just one per century, a large imaging survey is required to discover an appreciable sample of SN siblings. From the wide-field Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) Bright Transient Survey (BTS; which aims for spectroscopic completeness for all transients which peak brighter than $r{<}$18.5 mag) we present 10 SN siblings in 5 parent galaxies. For each of these families we analyze the SN's location within the host and its underlying stellar population, finding agreement with expectations that SNe from more massive progenitors are found nearer to their host core and in regions of more active star formation. We also present an analysis of the relative rates of core collapse and thermonuclear SN siblings, finding a significantly lower ratio than past SN sibling samples due to the unbiased nature of the ZTF., Comment: 14 pages, 4 tables, 7 figures, accepted to MNRAS

The final explosive fate of massive stars, and the nature of the compact remnants they leave behind (black holes and neutron stars), are major open questions in astrophysics. Many massive stars are stripped of their outer hydrogen envelopes as they evolve. Such Wolf-Rayet (W-R) stars emit strong and rapidly expanding (v_wind>1000 km/s) winds indicating a high escape velocity from the stellar surface. A fraction of this population is also helium depleted, with spectra dominated by highly-ionized emission lines of carbon and oxygen (Types WC/WO). Evidence indicates that the most commonly-observed supernova (SN) explosions that lack hydrogen and helium (Types Ib/Ic) cannot result from massive WC/WO stars, leading some to suggest that most such stars collapse directly into black holes without a visible supernova explosions. Here, we present observations of supernova SN 2019hgp, discovered about a day after explosion. The short rise time and rapid decline place it among an emerging population of rapidly-evolving transients (RETs). Spectroscopy reveals a rich set of emission lines indicating that the explosion occurred within a nebula composed of carbon, oxygen, and neon. Narrow absorption features show that this material is expanding at relatively high velocities (>1500 km/s) requiring a compact progenitor. Our observations are consistent with an explosion of a massive WC/WO star, and suggest that massive W-R stars may be the progenitors of some rapidly evolving transients., Comment: Unedited author version, Nature in press

Type Ia supernovae (SNe~Ia) in the nearby Hubble flow are excellent distance indicators in cosmology. The Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) has observed a large sample of supernovae from an untargeted, rolling survey, reaching $20.8, 20.6, 20.3$ mag in $g$ $r$, and $i$-band, respectively. With a FoV of 47 sq.deg, ZTF discovered $>$ 3000 SNe~Ia in a little over 2.5 years. Here, we report on the sample of 761 spectroscopically classified SNe~Ia from the first year of operations (DR1). The sample has a median redshift $\bar z =$ 0.057, nearly a factor of two higher than the current low-$z$ sample. Our sample has a total of 934 spectra, of which 632 were obtained with the robotic SEDm on Palomar P60. We assess the potential for precision cosmology for a total of 305 SNe with redshifts from host galaxy spectra. The sample is already comparable in size to the entire combined literature low-$z$ anchor sample. The median first detection is 13.5 days before maximum light, about 10 days earlier than the median in the literature. Furthermore, six SNe from our sample are at $D_L < 80$ Mpc, for which host galaxy distances can be obtained in the JWST era, such that we have calibrator and Hubble flow SNe observed with the same instrument. In the entire duration of ZTF-I, we have observed nearly fifty SNe for which we can obtain calibrator distances, key for percent level distance scale measurements., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS. We present observations of three Core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe) in elliptical hosts, detected by the Zwicky Transient Facility Bright Transient Survey (BTS). SN 2019ape is a SN Ic that exploded in the main body of a typical elliptical galaxy. Its properties are consistent with an explosion of a regular SN Ic progenitor. A secondary g-band light curve peak could indicate interaction of the ejecta with circumstellar material (CSM). An H$\alpha$-emitting source at the explosion site suggests a residual local star formation origin. SN 2018fsh and SN 2020uik are SNe II which exploded in the outskirts of elliptical galaxies. SN 2020uik shows typical spectra for SNe II, while SN 2018fsh shows a boxy nebular H$\alpha$ profile, a signature of CSM interaction. We combine these 3 SNe with 7 events from the literature and analyze their hosts as a sample. We present multi-wavelength photometry of the hosts, and compare this to archival photometry of all BTS hosts. Using the spectroscopically complete BTS we conclude that $0.3\%^{+0.3}_{-0.1}$ of all CCSNe occur in elliptical galaxies. We derive star-formation rates and stellar masses for the host-galaxies and compare them to the properties of other SN hosts. We show that CCSNe in ellipticals have larger physical separations from their hosts compared to SNe Ia in elliptical galaxies, and discuss implications for star-forming activity in elliptical galaxies., Comment: Comments are welcome. The division between stripped-envelope supernovae (SE-SNe) and superluminous supernovae (SLSNe) is not well defined in either photometric or spectroscopic space. While a sharp luminosity threshold has been suggested, there remains an increasing number of transitional objects that reach this threshold without the spectroscopic signatures common to SLSNe. In this work we present data and analysis on four SNe transitional between SE-SNe and SLSNe; the He-poor SNe 2019dwa and 2019cri, and the He-rich SNe 2019hge and 2019unb. Each object displays long-lived and variable photometric evolution with luminosities around the SLSN threshold of $M_r < -19.8$ mag. Spectroscopically however, these objects are similar to SE-SNe, with line velocities lower than either SE-SNe and SLSNe, and thus represent an interesting case of rare transitional events., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Stripped-envelope supernovae (SE SNe) of Type Ib and Type Ic are thought to result from explosions of massive stars having lost their outer envelopes. The favoured explosion mechanism is by core-collapse, with the shock later revived by neutrino heating. However, there is an upper limit to the amount of radioactive Nickel-56 that such models can accomplish. Recent literature point to a tension between the maximum luminosity from such simulations and observations. We use a well characterized sample of SE SNe from the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) Bright Transient Survey (BTS) to collect a sample of spectroscopically classified normal Type Ibc SNe for which we use the ZTF light curves to determine the maximum luminosity. We cull the sample further based on data quality, light-curve shape, distance and colors. The methodology of the sample construction from this BTS sample can be used for many other future investigations. In total we use 129 Type Ib or Type Ic BTS SNe with an initial rough luminosity distribution peaked at Mr = -17.61 +- 0.72, and where 36% are apparently brighter than the theoretically predicted maximum brightness of Mr = -17.8. When we further cull this sample to ensure that the SNe are normal Type Ibc with good LC data within the Hubble flow, the sample of 94 objects has Mr = -17.64 +- 0.54. A main uncertainty in absolute magnitude determinations for SNe is the host galaxy extinction correction, but the reddened objects only get more luminous after corrections. If we simply exclude objects with red, unusual or uncertain colors, we are left with 14 objects at M = -17.90 +- 0.73, whereof a handful are most certainly brighter than the suggested theoretical limit. We investigate the thermal emission and extinction from dust associated with the nearby superluminous supernova (SLSN) 2018bsz. Our dataset has daily cadence and simultaneous optical and near-infrared coverage up to ~ 100 days, together with late time (+ 1.7 yr) MIR observations. At 230 days after light curve peak the SN is not detected in the optical, but shows a surprisingly strong near-infrared excess, with r - J > 3 mag and r - Ks > 5 mag. The time evolution of the infrared light curve enables us to investigate if the mid-infrared emission is from newly formed dust inside the SN ejecta, from a pre-existing circumstellar envelope, or interstellar material heated by the radiation from the SN. We find the latter two scenarios can be ruled out, and a scenario where new dust is forming in the SN ejecta at epochs > 200 days can self-consistently reproduce the evolution of the SN flux. We can fit the spectral energy distribution well at +230 d with 5 x 10^-4 solar mass of carbon dust, increasing over the following several hundred days to 10^-2 solar mass by +535 d. SN 2018bsz is the first SLSN showing evidence for dust formation within the SN ejecta, and appears to form ten times more dust than normal core-collapse SNe at similar epochs. Together with their preference for low mass, low metallicity host galaxies, we suggest that SLSNe may be a significant contributor to dust formation in the early Universe., Comment: 14 pages and 7 figures in main text, 12 pages and 6 figures in appendix. The distribution of ejecta in young supernova remnants offers a powerful observational probe of their explosions and progenitors. Here we present a 3D reconstruction of the ejecta in SNR 0540-69.3, which is an O-rich remnant with a pulsar wind nebula located in the LMC. We use observations from VLT/MUSE to study H\beta, [O III] \lambda \lambda 4959, 5007, H\alpha, [S II] \lambda \lambda 6717, 6731, [Ar III] \lambda 7136 and [S III] \lambda 9069. This is complemented by 2D spectra from VLT/X-shooter, which also cover [O II] \lambda \lambda 3726, 3729 and [Fe II] \lambda 12567. We identify three main emission components: (i) Clumpy rings in the inner nebula (<1000 km/s) with similar morphologies in all lines; (ii) Faint extended [O III] emission dominated by an irregular ring-like structure with radius ~1600 km/s and inclination ~40 \dg, but with maximal velocities reaching ~3000 km/s; and (iii) A blob of H\alpha and H\beta located southeast of the pulsar at velocities ~1500-3500 km/s. We analyze the geometry using a clump-finding algorithm and use the clumps in the [O III] ring to estimate an age of 1146 \pm 116 years. The observations favor an interpretation of the [O III] ring as ejecta, while the origin of the H-blob is more uncertain. An alternative explanation is that it is the blown-off envelope of a binary companion. We present a detailed analysis of SN 2020qmp, a nearby type IIP core-collapse supernova (CCSN), discovered by the Palomar Gattini-IR (PGIR) survey in the galaxy UGC07125. We illustrate how the multiwavelength study of this event helps our general understanding of stellar progenitors and circumstellar medium (CSM) interactions in CCSNe. We also highlight the importance of near-infrared (NIR) surveys for early detections of SNe in dusty environments. SN 2020qmp displays characteristic hydrogen lines in its optical spectra, as well as a plateau in its optical LC, hallmarks of a type IIP SN. We do not detect linear polarization during the plateau phase, with a 3 sigma upper limit of 0.78%. Through hydrodynamical LC modeling and an analysis of its nebular spectra, we estimate a progenitor mass of around 11 solar masses, and an explosion energy of around 0.8e51 erg. We find that the spectral energy distribution cannot be explained by a simple CSM interaction model, assuming a constant shock velocity and steady mass-loss rate, and the excess X-ray luminosity compared with the synchrotron radio luminosity suggests deviations from equipartition. Finally, we demonstrate the advantages of NIR surveys over optical surveys for the detection of dust-obscured CCSNe in the local universe. Specifically, our simulations show that the Wide-Field Infrared Transient Explorer will detect about 14 more CCSNe out of 75 expected in its footprint within 40 Mpc, over five years than an optical survey equivalent to the Zwicky Transient Facility would detect. We have determined or constrained the main properties of SN 2020qmp and of its progenitor, highlighting the value of multiwavelength follow-up observations of nearby CCSNe. Spectroscopically, TDEs are characterized by broad ( 10$^{4}$ km/s) emission lines and show large diversity as well as different line profiles. After carefully and consistently performing a series of data reduction tasks including host galaxy light subtraction, we present here the first detailed, spectroscopic population study of 16 optical/UV TDEs. We report a time lag between the peaks of the optical light-curves and the peak luminosity of H$\alpha$ spanning between 7 - 45 days. If interpreted as light-echoes, these lags correspond to distances of 2 - 12 x 10$^{16}$ cm, one to two orders of magnitudes larger than the estimated blackbody radii (R$_{\rm BB}$) of the same TDEs and we discuss the possible origin of this surprisingly large discrepancy. We also report time lags for the peak luminosity of He I $\lambda$5876 line; smaller than the ones of H$\alpha$ for H TDEs and similar or larger for N III Bowen TDEs. We report that N III Bowen TDEs have lower H$\alpha$ velocity widths compared to the rest of the TDEs in our sample and we also find that a strong X-ray to optical ratio might imply weakening of the line widths. Furthermore, we study the evolution of line luminosities and ratios with respect to their radii (R$_{\rm BB}$) and temperatures (T$_{\rm BB}$). We find a linear relationship between H$\alpha$ luminosity and the R$_{\rm BB}$ and potentially an inverse power-law relation with T$_{\rm BB}$ leading to weaker H$\alpha$ emission for T$_{\rm BB}$ $\geq$ 25000 K. The He II/He I ratio becomes large at the same temperatures possibly pointing to an ionization effect. The He II/H$\alpha$ ratio becomes larger as the photospheric radius recedes, implying a stratified photosphere where Helium lies deeper than Hydrogen. We present the spectroscopic and photometric study of five intermediate-luminosity red transients (ILRTs), namely AT 2010dn, AT 2012jc, AT 2013la, AT 2013lb, and AT 2018aes. They share common observational properties and belong to a family of objects similar to the prototypical ILRT SN~2008S. These events have a rise time that is less than 15 days and absolute peak magnitudes of between $-11.5$ and $-14.5$ mag. Their pseudo-bolometric light curves peak in the range $0.5$ - $9.0 \times10^{40}~\mathrm{erg~s}^{-1}$ and their total radiated energies are on the order of (0.3 - 3) $\times$~10$^{47}$~erg. After maximum brightness, the light curves show a monotonic decline or a plateau, resembling those of faint supernovae IIL or IIP, respectively. At late phases, the light curves flatten, roughly following the slope of the $^{56}$Co decay. If the late-time power source is indeed radioactive decay, these transients produce $^{56}$Ni masses on the order of $10^{-4}$ to $10^{-3}$~\msun. The spectral energy distribution of our ILRT sample, extending from the optical to the mid-infrared (MIR) domain, reveals a clear IR excess soon after explosion and non-negligible MIR emission at very late phases. The spectra show prominent H lines in emission with a typical velocity of a few hundred km~s$^{-1}$, along with Ca~II features. In particular, the [Ca~II] $\lambda$7291,7324 doublet is visible at all times, which is a characteristic feature for this family of transients. The identified progenitor of SN~2008S, which is luminous in archival Spitzer MIR images, suggests an intermediate-mass precursor star embedded in a dusty cocoon. We present SN 2020jfo, a Type IIP supernova in the nearby galaxy M61. Optical light curves from the Zwicky Transient Facility, complemented with data from Swift and near-IR photometry are presented. The 350-day duration bolometric light curve exhibits a relatively short (~ 65 days) plateau. This implies a moderate ejecta mass (~ 5 Msun). A series of spectroscopy is presented, including spectropolarimetric observations. The nebular spectra are dominated by Halpha but also reveal emission lines from oxygen and calcium. Comparisons to synthetic nebular spectra indicate an initial progenitor mass of about 12 Msun. Stable nickel is present in the nebular spectrum, with a super-solar Ni/Fe ratio. Several years of pre-discovery data are examined, but no signs of pre-cursor activity is found. Pre-explosion Hubble Space Telescope imaging reveals a probable progenitor star, detected only in the reddest band and is fainter than expected for stars in the 10 - 15 Msun range, in tension with the analysis of the LC and the nebular spectral modeling. We present two additional core-collapse SNe monitored by the ZTF, which also have nebular Halpha-dominated spectra. This illustrates how the absence or presence of interaction with circumstellar material affect both the LCs and in particular the nebular spectra. Type II SN 2020amv has a LC powered by CSM interaction, in particular after about 40 days when the LC is bumpy and slowly evolving. The late-time spectra show strong Halpha emission with a structure suggesting emission from a thin, dense shell. The evolution of the complex three-horn line profile is reminiscent of that observed for SN 1998S. SN 2020jfv has a poorly constrained early-time LC, but shows a transition from a hydrogen-poor Type IIb to a Type IIn, where the nebular spectrum after the light-curve rebrightening is dominated by Halpha, although with an intermediate line width., Comment: Paper on SN 2020jfo in M61, and on SNe 2020amv and 2020jfv. We present observations and analysis of SN 2020cxd, a Low luminous (LL), long-lived Type IIP SN. This object was a clear outlier in the magnitude-limited SN sample recently presented by the ZTF Bright Transient Survey. We demonstrate that SN 2020cxd is an additional member of the group of LL SNe, and discuss the rarity of LL SNe in the context of the ZTF survey, and how further studies of these faintest members of the CC SN family might help understand the underlying initial mass function for stars that explode., Comment: 22 pages, 16 figures. Stripped-envelope supernovae (SE-SNe) show a wide variety of photometric and spectroscopic properties. This is due to the different potential formation channels and the stripping mechanism that allows for a large diversity within the progenitors outer envelop compositions. Here, the photometric and spectroscopic observations of SN 2020cpg covering $\sim 130$ days from the explosion date are presented. SN 2020cpg ($z = 0.037$) is a bright SE-SNe with the $B$-band peaking at $M_{B} = -17.75 \pm 0.39$ mag and a maximum pseudo-bolometric luminosity of $L_\mathrm{max} = 6.03 \pm 0.01 \times 10^{42} \mathrm{ergs^{-1}}$. Spectroscopically, SN 2020cpg displays a weak high and low velocity H$\alpha$ feature during the photospheric phase of its evolution, suggesting that it contained a detached hydrogen envelope prior to explosion. From comparisons with spectral models, the mass of hydrogen within the outer envelope was constrained to be $\sim 0.1 \mathrm{M}_{\odot}$. From the pseudo-bolometric light curve of SN 2020cpg a $^{56}$Ni mass of $M_\mathrm{Ni} \sim 0.27 \pm 0.08$ $\mathrm{M}_{\odot}$ was determined using an Arnett-like model. The ejecta mass and kinetic energy of SN 2020cpg were determined using an alternative method that compares the light curve of SN 2020cpg and several modelled SE-SNe, resulting in an ejecta mass of $M_\mathrm{ejc} \sim 5.5 \pm 2.0$ $\mathrm{M}_{\odot}$ and a kinetic energy of $E_\mathrm{K} \sim 9.0 \pm 3.0 \times 10^{51} \mathrm{erg}$. The ejected mass indicates a progenitor mass of $18 - 25 \mathrm{M}_{\odot}$. The use of the comparative light curve method provides an alternative process to the commonly used Arnett-like model to determine the physical properties of SE-SNe., Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures, 7 tables

We present optical and near-infrared (NIR, $YJH$-band) observations of 42 Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) discovered by the untargeted intermediate Palomar Transient Factory (iPTF) survey. This new data-set covers a broad range of redshifts and host galaxy stellar masses, compared to previous SN Ia efforts in the NIR. We construct a sample, using also literature data at optical and NIR wavelengths, to examine claimed correlations between the host stellar masses and the Hubble diagram residuals. The SN magnitudes are corrected for host galaxy extinction using either a global total-to-selective extinction ratio, $R_V$=2.0 for all SNe, or a best-fit $R_V$ for each SN individually. Unlike previous studies which were based on a narrower range in host stellar mass, we do not find evidence for a "mass-step", between the color- and stretch-corrected peak $J$ and $H$ magnitudes for galaxies below and above $\log(M_{*}/M_{\odot}) = 10$. However, the mass-step remains significant ($3\sigma$) at optical wavelengths ($g,r,i$) when using a global $R_V$, but vanishes when each SN is corrected using their individual best-fit $R_V$. Our study confirms the benefits of the NIR SN Ia distance estimates, as these are largely exempted from the empirical corrections dominating the systematic uncertainties in the optical., Comment: 20 pages, 13 figures. We present the bolometric lightcurve, identification and analysis of the progenitor candidate, and preliminary modelling of AT2016jbu (Gaia16cfr). We find a progenitor consistent with a $\sim$22--25~$M_{\odot}$ yellow hypergiant surrounded by a dusty circumstellar shell, in agreement with what has been previously reported. We see evidence for significant photometric variability in the progenitor, as well as strong H$\alpha$ emission consistent with pre-existing circumstellar material. The age of the environment as well as the resolved stellar population surrounding AT2016jbu, support a progenitor age of $>$10 Myr, consistent with a progenitor mass of $\sim$22~$M_{\odot}$. A joint analysis of the velocity evolution of AT2016jbu, and the photospheric radius inferred from the bolometric lightcurve shows the transient is consistent with two successive outbursts/explosions. The first outburst ejected material with velocity $\sim$650$kms^{-1}$, while the second, more energetic event, ejected material at $\sim$4500$kms^{-1}$. Whether the latter is the core-collapse of the progenitor remains uncertain. We place a limit on the ejected $^{56}$Ni mass of $<$0.016$M_{\odot}$. Using the BPASS code, we explore a wide range of possible progenitor systems, and find that the majority of these are in binaries, some of which are undergoing mass transfer or common envelope evolution immediately prior to explosion. Finally, we use the SNEC code to demonstrate that the low-energy explosion within some of these binary systems, together with sufficient CSM, can reproduce the overall morphology of the lightcurve of AT2016jbu., Comment: 23 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present the results from a high cadence, multi-wavelength observation campaign of AT 2016jbu (aka Gaia16cfr), an interacting transient. This dataset complements the current literature by adding higher cadence as well as extended coverage of the lightcurve evolution and late-time spectroscopic evolution. Photometric coverage reveals that AT 2016jbu underwent significant photometric variability followed by two luminous events, the latter of which reached an absolute magnitude of M$_V\sim$-18.5 mag. This is similar to the transient SN 2009ip whose nature is still debated. Spectra are dominated by narrow emission lines and show a blue continuum during the peak of the second event. AT 2016jbu shows signatures of a complex, non-homogeneous circumstellar material (CSM). We see slowly evolving asymmetric hydrogen line profiles, with velocities of 500km$s^{-1}$ seen in narrow emission features from a slow moving CSM, and up to 10,000km$s^{-1}$ seen in broad absorption from some high velocity material. Late-time spectra ($\sim$+1 year) show a lack of forbidden emission lines expected from a core-collapse supernova and are dominated by strong emission from H, He i and Ca ii. Strong asymmetric emission features, a bumpy lightcurve, and continually evolving spectra suggest an inhibit nebular phase. We compare the evolution of H$\alpha$ among SN 2009ip-like transients and find possible evidence for orientation angle effects.
