Twenty-one mini watermelon[Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.) Matsumura & Nakai] hybrids and their 6 parents were grown at Experimental area of the Department of Horticulture, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Cukurova in Turkey with the aim of assessing heterosis in plant and fruit parameters as well as total fruit yield. Performance of hybrids was compared with their parents in stem length, stem diameter, number of nodes, flowering time, total yield, fruit weight, fruit height and diameter, rind thickness and total soluble solid content. According to the research results there was no significant difference in stem length and stem diameter; however, all other investigated traits were found significantly different among hybrids and parents. Percentage heterosis was assessed in all 9 traits and maximum positive heterosis (95.38%) was obtained in hybrid 29 × 1 for number of nodes followed by 82.58% in hybrid 21 × 29 for total fruit yield. The highest negative heterosis (-39.65%) was found in hybrid 29 × 1 for total fruit yield and followed by -37.04%, for fruit weight in hybrid 21 × 19. In the present study, we have investigated the effect of citrulline on drought and salt tolerance in watermelon genotypes. Seeds were germinated in plastic pots containing vermiculite. Plants with three true leaves were subjected to drought and salt stress. Stress responses of the watermelon genotypes were evaluated in early plant development stages. Genotypes were classified according to their citrulline level. Watermelon genotypes with tolerance to salt, KAR-152, KAR-278, KAR-306 and KAR-338, were induced to accumulate citrulline. On the other hand, genotypes with drought tolerance KAR-98, KAR-234, KAR-278, KAR-300, KAR-306 and KAR-374 accumulated higher levels of citrulline than sensitive genotypes. The result of the study, evaluating citrulline as a biochemical marker for salt and drought tolerance of watermelon genotypes is discussed. Despite a wide range of morphological diversity in Turkish watermelons, mainly imported hybrid watermelon cultivars are used in production due to high yield and quality. The watermelon genebank in the Department of Horticulture in Cukurova University consists of 475 accessions collected from different regions of Turkey and provided from different genebanks of the world. These watermelon genetic resources were morphologically characterized, elite accessions that were chosen and self-pollinated for use in breeding studies. The aim of this study was to evaluate the horticultural characteristics of promising watermelon genotypes for two years. Length of main stem, diameter of main stem, number of branches per plant, number of nodes on main stem, yield, fruit weight, fruit length, fruit diameter, rind thickness and total soluble solids were measured in all genotypes. Data analysis indicated that the Turkish genotypes had high diversity for plant and fruit characteristics. The foliage wilt by FOM causes decrease in yield of melon. The objective of this study was to screen Fusarium resistant genotypes in Korean melon germplasm and to investigate the horticultural characteristics of oriental melon. This investigation was on FOM resistant screening of 32 Korean melon accessions, carried out at the Plant Protection Research Institute in Adana, Turkey. Among Korean melon, accession No. 8, 21 and 27 had resistance to FOM race 0, 1, K1 (race 1) and K2 (race 2), showing over 75% survival ratio. Because accession No. 27 'Romance' was commercial F1 hybrid cultivar, it can be used directly for commercial cultivation. Since this experiment was accomplished with seedling inspection, field study with mature plants will be conducted. Horticultural traits as fresh weight and length and flesh thickness of oriental melon fruit were smaller than those of melon such as reticulatus and inodorus types. Totally, 327 genotypes were used which mostly collected from different regions of Turkey since 1993. Seed weight, seed length and seed width of 15 seeds per genotype were measured. The seed weight, length, and width ranged from 20 to 211 mg, 5.03 to 16.63 mm and 3.39 to 9.53 mm, respectively, among genotypes. Nine genotypes were selected based on seed size (3 small, 3 medium, 3 big) in order to evaluate correlation between seed and fruit characteristics. Correlation analysis was performed between measured seed parameters and fruit weight, length and diameter in the nine genotypes. Measured seed parameters were negatively correlated with fruit weight, length and diameter while seed weight was positively correlated with seed length. Pepino is a minor crop both in the world and in Turkey. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of plant density and pruning on yield and some quality parameters of pepino to promote its production in Turkey. Pepino plants which were propagated by cutting under mist propagation were transplanted in plastic greenhouse. The spacing was 1 m between rows and 25 cm (36 plants), 50 cm (18 plants) and 75 cm (12 plants) within rows. Plants were pruned as 1, 2 and 3 branched in each plant spacing plot. The experimental design was designed split blocks with three replications. Some characters as plant height, diameter of main stem were measured. Number of internodes on main stem was counted. Number of flower were counted and rate of fruit set of these flowers were examined. Yield and some fruit quality parameters (fruit weight, fruit length, fruit width, length of fruit cavity, width of fruit cavity, flesh thickness and total soluble solids) were also measured. The results indicated that 25 cm plant spacing with 2 branched plants had higher values in case of yield and measured plant and fruit parameters. © Sila Science.

The rootstock potential of 21 bottle gourds (Lagenaria siceraria) collected from the Mediterranean region (Turkey) was investigated for watermelon with regard to plant growth, yield, and fruit quality. The Crimson Tide watermelon cultivar was used as a scion and 2 commercial rootstocks (L. siceraria) were also used for comparison. In greenhouse conditions, the survival rate of grafted plants and the eff ect of rootstocks on plant growth were determined. The grafted plants were planted under low tunnels in early spring and the eff ects of the rootstocks on early yield, total yield, and fruit quality were evaluated. The survival rates of the grafted plants varied from 83% to 100%. Survival rates of those with commercial rootstocks and local rootstocks were similar. Plants grafted onto 20-02, 31-09, 31-43, 35-01, and 46-03 were more vigorous than ungrafted control plants. Compared to the control plants, grafted plants had 37% to 80% higher plant dry weight. All of the grafted plants except CT/Macis produced a higher yield than the control plants. The plants grafted onto 6 of the local rootstocks had significantly greater total yields than those grafted onto the commercial rootstocks. Among the local bottle gourd landraces tested, the 01-16, 07-45, 20-06, 31-09, 31-15, and 46-03 were found to be promising genotypes with regard to total yield. Early yield was not significantly affected by rootstock. The quality parameters of the fruits harvested from the grafted and control plants were found to be similar except for a limited number of graft combinations. It was concluded that germplasm from Turkish bottle gourds has a high rootstock potential for watermelon with regard to the investigated parameters. © TÜBİTAK.

Gene escape and fruit quality characteristics of transgenic melons (Cucumis melo L. var inodorus cv. 'Kirkagac 637') resistant to zucchini yellow mosaic virus (ZYMV) and control plants were investigated under screenhouse conditions. No significant differences were observed between transgenic and transgenic × control genotypes, with regard to rind thickness, fruit cavity length, fruit cavity width, total soluble solids, pistil scar diameter, and peduncle length. Fruit characters, including fruit weight, fruit width, fruit length, fruit flesh thickness, and peduncle diameter were significantly different. These results indicate that transgenic × control genotypes had higher values than transgenic (T4 and T20) genotypes, regarding fruit weight, fruit width, fruit length, fruit flesh thickness, and peduncle diameter. Significant differences were not observed between transgenic (T4 and T20), control, and transgenic × control genotypes in terms of L-ascorbic acid, malic acid, citric acid, sucrose, glucose, or fructose, but differences were observed for fruit total acidity. Esters, lactones, and alcohols were aroma components, but none differed significantly between the transgenic and control genotypes. The results show that there was 100% gene escape in the control plants within 10 m of the transgenic plants, while there was 70% gene escape in plants 12.5, 15, and 17.5 m from the transgenic plants under screenhouse conditions. © TÜBİTAK.

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of an intercropping system on the yield, quality and photosynthetic active reaction (PAR) measurements of some vegetables in Adana (Turkey). The experimental research was conducted under field conditions from 2003 to 2005 at the facilities of the Department of Horticulture and Faculty of Agriculture of Cukurova University. Cauliflower and broccoli were used in the first year; cauliflower, cabbage and lettuce were used in the second year as main crops. Lettuce, pea, leek, garlic and onion were used in the first year; green bean, pea, radish, leek, garlic and onion were used as intercrops in the second year of the research. According to the research results, the intercropping system had no negative effect on the yield and size of the heads of the cauliflower and broccoli. However, the yield and the head size of the cabbages were affected negatively. Leek, onion and garlic performed the best as intercrops, mainly due to their upright growth habit. Radish, pea, green bean and lettuce were unsuccessful as intercrops. Results of this study indicated that the extra income from unit area can be obtained in the small enterprise when cauliflower, broccoli and cabbage were used as main crops and leek, garlic and onion as intercrops.

9th EUCARPIA Meeting on Genetics and Breeding of Cucurbitaceae -- MAY 21-27, 2008 -- Avignon, FRANCE WOS: 000263558500039 A total of 67 watermelon accessions of Korean (37 accessions) and Turkish (27 accessions) germplasm and 3 accessions of other species were characterized for morphological characteristics. The accessions were characterized according to UPOV descriptor list for 56 characters (6 seedling, 4 plant, 11 leaf, 5 flower, 23 fruit and 7 seed). Eight quantitative characters (hypocotyl length, cotyledon width, cotyledon length, fruit weight, fruit length, fruit width, thickness of outer layer of pericarp and soluble solid content) were also measured. According to the results of morphological characterization performed, the accessions displayed a large diversity; however, plant growth habit and leaf blade flecking were constant characters for all the accessions. The 56 qualitatively scored characters were analyzed by principle coordinate analysis (PCoA) while the eight quantitative ones were subjected to principle component analysis (PCA). The results revealed that the Korean and Turkish watermelon accessions belong to diverse groups and can be separated by both multivariate analyses of morphological characters used although the grouping was more apparent in PCoS results. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of intercropping system on some vegetables nutrient uptake in Adana ecological conditions. The experimental research was conducted under field conditions and at the plant physiology laboratory of the Department of Horticulture, Faculty of Agriculture of Cukurova University during 2003-2005. In the first year of this work, cauliflower and broccoli, in the second year cauliflower, cabbage and lettuce were used as main crop. Lettuce, pea, leek, garlic and onion were used as intercrops in the first year; green bean, pea, radish, leek, garlic and onion were used as intercrops in the second year. In general, it can be said that the vegetables cropped solely uptaked more mineral contents while for those grown by intercropping and competitions were determined in intercropped systems.

Turkey is one of the important diversity centers for cultivated cucurbits because of the adaptation to diverse ecological conditions as result of natural selection and also the farmers selection in accordance with their preference. National collection of Citcurbitaceae species at National Gene Bank of Turkey (AARI) consists of 2223 accessions. Collecting activities have been systematically conducted since early 1960s. 25.7% of this amount is melon, 20.5% is Cucurbita spp., 16.1% is watermelon, 13.4% is cucumber, 7.7% is bottle gourd, 7.2% is squash, 4.2% is winter squash, 3.3% is snake melon, 1.3% is pumpkin, 0.3% Is other cucumbers, 0.2% squirting cucumber and 0.1% of bryony. Melon and watermelon genetic resources collections and their morphological and molecular characterization trials were done In Cukurova University and approximately 400 melon and 355 watermelon accessions were collected. Squash and pumpkin studies were done in Ondokuz Mayis and Ankara University and 128 winter squash, 40 pumpkin populations and 20 snack seed squash were collected and characterized. Selected pumpkins also were characterized molecularly. Bottle gourd characterization trials were done in Mustafa Kemal University and 188 accessions were characterized. Snake melon research activities were conducted at Ankara and Cukurova Universities and 62 accessions were characterized. The evaluation and breeding programs of these genetic resources are ongoing. Turkey is the second largest melon producing country after China and the secondary diversity center of melon. In Turkey, the production is mainly conducted with the local genotypes that belong to inodorus group. During the summer and the fall season of 2004 sixty four accessions were collected from the provinces of Aegean, Middle Anatolia, Mediterranean, Marmara-Thrace and Southeastern Anatolia Region which have valuable melon genetic resources. The morphological characterization of genotypes was done for 10 fruit characters (length, diameter, shape of longitudinal section, ground color of skin at maturity, secondary colors of skin, size of pistil scar, grooves, creasing of surface and netting). Numeric values were given to the genotypes according to the criterias of the characters which were observed. The genotypes were assigned to different groups based on their relatedness.

Background: Although many experimental and clinical studies were performed on the pathophysiology and treatment of spinal cord injury (SCI), the electrophysiological and ultrastructural changes of the spinal cord were not precisely evaluated. Aims: To investigate the effect of mannitol on Somatosensory Evoked Potentials (SSEP), postoperative neurological recovery and ultrastructural findings after an experimental SCI. Setting: The experimental microsurgery laboratory of a university hospital. Design: A prospective, randomized animal study. Material and Methods: Sprague-Dawley rats were used and divided into three groups (Groups I-III) for this study. Those in Group I were control animals who underwent laminectomy only, and non-traumatized spinal cord samples were obtained 2 weeks later. SCI was produced in Groups II and III using clip compression technique, and cord samples were obtained 2 weeks later. The rats in Group 11 received 2 g/kg of 20% mannitol intraperitoneally, immediately and three hours after trauma was induced; and those in Group III received the same amount of 0,9% NaCl in the same manner. Preoperative and postoperative SSEP records at the end of 2 weeks were obtained. Electron microscopy examination of the cord samples was done at 2 weeks postoperatively. Statistical Analysis used: Fischer's Exact Test. Results: SSEP records, ultrastructural findings and clinical recovery showed that minor neural damage and significant recovery occurred in Group II. Conclusion: This study demonstrates that the administration of 2 g/kg of 20% mannitol produces significant improvement in the neural structures and protects the spinal cord following injury.
