Rhamphorhynchus is one of the best-known pterosaurs, with well over 100 specimens being held in public collections. Most of these represent juvenile animals, and the adults known are typically around 1 m in wingspan. Here we describe a near complete skeleton, preserved partially in 3D, of an animal with a wingspan of around 1.8 m, that is considerably larger than other known specimens, and is among the largest known non-pterodactyloid pterosaurs. This animal shows differences in the anatomy not seen in smaller specimens, revealing details of late-stage ontogeny in this genus. The specimen exhibits a disproportionate reduction in the size of the orbit and increase in the size of the lower temporal fenestra, a reduction in the proportional mandibular symphysis, and unusually laterally flattened teeth, which may point to a changing diet as these animals grew. These features show a transition from smaller to larger specimens of Rhamphorhynchus and also appear in other large specimens of rhamphorhyhchines and point to a consistent pattern in their development. For over a century, there was a major gap in our understanding of the evolution of the flying Mesozoic reptiles, the pterosaurs, with a major morphological gap between the early forms and the derived pterodactyloids. 1 Recent discoveries have found a cluster of intermediate forms that have the head and neck of the pterodactyloids but the body of the early grade, 2 yet this still leaves fundamental gaps between these intermediates and both earlier and more derived pterosaurs. Here, we describe a new and large Jurassic pterosaur, Skiphosoura bavarica gen. et sp. nov., preserved in three dimensions, that helps bridge the gap between current intermediate pterosaurs and the pterodactyloids. A new phylogeny shows that there is a general progression of key characteristics of increasing head size, increasing length of neck and wing metacarpal, modification to the fifth toe that supports the rear wing membrane, and gradual reduction in tail length and complexity from earlier pterosaurs into the first pterodactyloids. This also shows a clear evolution of the increasing terrestrial competence of derived pterosaurs. The Crato Formation (Lower Cretaceous, Brazil) is a Konservat-Lagerstätte preserving a great number of exceptionally well-preserved insects. Here, we sought to explore the preservational modes of two abundant aquatic and terrestrial groups of this unit, mayflies and crickets. To better understand how exceptional is their preservation, we also present detailed data on the modes of preservation of mayflies from the renowned Solnhofen limestones (Upper Jurassic, Germany). For the Crato Formation, out of 234 fossil mayflies and crickets, ten specimens were additionally analyzed using scanning electron microscopy coupled to energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), energy and micro-energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF and μEDXRF), and μRaman spectroscopy. For the Solnhofen limestones, 85 adult mayflies were analyzed, and five of them were subjected to SEM-EDS and μEDXRF analyses. The Crato specimens preserve several external and internal microfeatures. The areas with the highest fidelity of preservation are characterized by smaller and more closely-packed crystals when compared to less-preserved parts. We also recovered microscopic features that suggest the presence of microbial mats during the fossilization process. All the analyzed Crato specimens are preserved by replacement of tissues with iron oxides after pyritization. Sulfur occurs scattered in some regions of the crickets, but is associated with low iron counts, which may indicate the presence of sulfates post-dating pyrite oxidation. Additionally, the orthopterans have calcium phosphate preserving some of their structures. Differing from Crato insects, Solnhofen mayflies are overall poorly preserved as mere imprints, and their micron-scale morphology is obliterated by coarse mineral growth, whereas tissues are obliterated by calcite crystals alone or in combination with globular material. There is an elevated concentration of Si, K, Ca, Ti, Mn, and Fe in comparison to the host rock, which may be related to a yet unknown mineral phase(s). Although the paleoenvironments of the Crato Formation and the Solnhofen limestones are different, there are similarities in the style of preservation of their vertebrates and in some of their paleoenvironmental conditions such as anoxic hypersaline bottom waters and deposition of laminated limestones. Late Jurassic marine vertebrates are extraordinarily well preserved in several Plattenkalk Lagerstätten in central Europe. Among them, the Solnhofen Archipelago has yielded the very rare fish Coccolepis bucklandi, which was the first fossil chondrostean to be found in sediments younger than the Triassic. The type specimen of this species was lost, but it was rediscovered recently, prompting the alpha taxonomic revision of this iconic fish. A new species Coccolepis solnhofensis has been identified among the specimens referred to C. bucklandi. The two species differ in the distinctive distribution of scutes and fringing fulcra. Based on the available evidence, C. bucklandi is restricted to the Eichstätt Basin and the Lithacoceras eigeltingense ß Horizon of the Lithacoceras riedense Subzone (Hybonoticeras hybonotum Zone), and C. solnhofensis sp. nov. is limited to the Solnhofen Basin and the slightly younger Subplanites rueppellianus Subzone (Hybonoticeras hybonotum Zone). Therefore, the two species are geographically and stratigraphically separated. The diagnosis of Coccolepis is improved with the addition of new characters, and the genus is here restricted to the two early Tithonian species from the Solnhofen Archipelago. Among the four species previously described or referred to Coccolepis, the generic assignment of “Coccolepis” australis and “Coccolepis” liassica, remains unclear. Sunolepis yumenensis is here returned to its original genus, and the new combination Condorlepis woodwardi is proposed for this Early Cretaceous coccolepidid from Australia.

However, few such specimens are currently described, and the taphonomical pathways for the preservation of soft tissue are not well understood. Known from at least the Silurian (c. 435 Ma) up to the Late Cretaceous (c. 85 Ma), thylacocephalans are among the most intriguing fossil euarthropods. They are characterized by a prominent shield enveloping most of the body, hypertrophied compound eyes, three pairs of large, raptorial appendages and a trunk with 8–22 stout segments bearing appendages. Despite this knowledge of their anatomy, the phylogenetic affinities of Thylacocephala are controversial due to a lack of knowledge on their body organization and tagmosis. This study focuses on Mayrocaris bucculata Polz, 1994 from the Solnhofen Lagerstätte, Germany (c. 150 Ma, early Tithonian, Jurassic). We document new specimens of Mayrocaris bucculata from the Solnhofener Plattenkalke sensu lato and provide new descriptions for previously reported specimens. We demonstrate that the raptorial appendages of Thylacocephala are most probably maxillulae, maxillae and maxillipeds. Additionally, we report new details on the posterior trunk appendages, including the description of a paddle-like proximal part and of a rod-like distal part, but also of a specialized terminal trunk appendage. These new findings, in addition to the reinterpretation of a cephalic appendage of Clausocaris lithographica as a possible mandible, are essential for a better understanding of the body organization in thylacocephalans and their phylogenetic affinities within Eucrustacea. Sea spiders (Pycnogonida) are strange arthropods characterized by a unique morphology, including reduced body, egg-carrying appendages and a proboscis. This peculiar body plan dates at least as early as the first undoubted occurrence of the group, 425 million years ago in the Silurian. All extant species belong to the order Pantopoda, characterized by cylindrical legs and an unsegmented abdomen. Palaeozoic fossils are much more diversified and exhibit features very different from pantopod morphology such as a segmented abdomen, limbs specialized to swim, or even a flagellum. The few Mesozoic fossils from the single Jurassic palaeoenvironment of La Voulte-sur-Rhône (south-eastern France) instead have strong affinities to Pantopoda. Here, we investigate the morphology of nine sea spider fossils using a new photographic protocol to document morphology, combining focus stacking and differential colourization. We also describe two new species of fossil pycnogonids from the Late Jurassic of Solnhofen (southern Germany): Colossopantopodus nanus sp. nov. is closely allied to a large species from La Voulte-sur-Rhône, but distinct in its smaller size; the other, ?Eurycyde golem sp. nov., is the first known fossil representative of the extant family Ascorhynchidae. Seven additional specimens, too poorly preserved for taxonomic description, are illustrated. The comparisons reveal that the shallow lagoons of Solnhofen contained a diverse assemblage of pantopods. Altogether with the fauna of La Voulte-sur-Rhône, the results suggest that Pantopoda became the dominant pycnogonid taxon of both deep and shallow marine waters after the Jurassic. Polychelidan lobsters (Decapoda: Polychelida) are crustaceans with extant species which are restricted to deep water environments. Fossil species, however, used to live in more varied palaeoenvironments, from shallow water to deep water, and were more diverse morphologically. We redescribe two species of polychelidan lobsters, the Late Triassic Rosenfeldia triasica Garassino, Teruzzi & Dalla Vecchia, 1996 and the Late Jurassic Eryon oppeli Woodward, 1866, recently assigned to the same genus, Rosenfeldia, based upon only a few characters. Our investigation of all available material of both species leads us to distinguish these two species and to erect Rogeryon gen. nov. to accommodate Eryon oppeli. The palaeobiology of both species is interpreted for the first time. Rosenfeldia triasica with its stout first pereiopods and mandibles with both incisor and molar processes (documented for the first time in Polychelida) was benthic and probably fed either on slow-moving sedentary preys or was a scavenger. Rogeryon oppeli gen. et comb. nov. was benthic, visually adapted to shallow water palaeoenvironments, and possibly had a diet similar to that of slipper lobsters and horseshoe crabs. The redescription of these two species highlights the palaeobiological diversity of fossil polychelidans.

Late Jurassic lizards from Solnhofen, Germany, include some of the oldest known articulated lizard specimens, sometimes including soft tissue preservation. These specimens are thus very important to our understanding of early squamate morphology and taxonomy, and also provide valuable information on squamate phylogeny. Eichstaettisaurus schroederi and Ardeosaurus digitatellus are two of the best-preserved species from that locality, the former being represented by one of the most complete lizard specimen known anywhere in the world from the Jurassic. Despite their relevance to broad questions in squamate evolution, their morphology has never been described in detail, and their systematic placement has been under debate for decades. Here, we provide the first detailed morphological description, species-level phylogeny, and functional morphological evaluation of E. schroederi and A. digitatellus. We corroborate their initial placement as geckoes (stem gekkotans, more specifically), and illustrate a number of climbing adaptations that indicate the early evolution of scansoriality in gekkonomorph lizards. Larvae of malacostracan crustaceans represent a large fraction of modern day zooplankton. Plankton is not only a major part of the modern marine ecosystem, but must have played an important role in the ecosystems of the past as well. Unfortunately, our knowledge about plankton composition of the past is still quite limited. As an important part of today’s zooplankton, malacostracan larvae are still a rarity in the fossil record; many types of malacostracan larvae dominating the modern plankton have so far not been found as fossils. Here we report a new type of fossil malacostracan larva, found in the 150 million years old lithographic limestones of southern Germany (Solnhofen Lithographic Limestones). The three rather incomplete specimens mainly preserve the telson. A pronounced middle spine on the posterior edge of these specimens indicates that they are either larval forms of a clawed lobster or of an axiidean lobster, or of a closer relative to one of the two groups. The tergo-pleura are drawn out into distinct spines in one specimen, further supporting the interpretation as a larva of a clawed lobster or an early relative. The telson morphology also shows adaptations to a prolonged planktic life style, the latero-posterior edges are drawn out into distinct spines. Similar adaptations are known in larvae of the modern homarid lobster Nephrops norvegicus, not necessarily indicating a closer relationship, but convergent life styles. The new finds provide an important new insight into the composition of Mesozoic zooplankton and demonstrate the preservation potential of lithographic limestones.

Background: Modern representatives of Polychelida (Polychelidae) are considered to be entirely blind and have largely reduced eyes, possibly as an adaptation to deep-sea environments. Fossil species of Polychelida, however, appear to have well-developed compound eyes preserved as anterior bulges with distinct sculpturation. Methods: We documented the shapes and sizes of eyes and ommatidia based upon exceptionally preserved fossil polychelidans from Binton (Hettangian, United-Kingdom), Osteno (Sinemurian, Italy), Posidonia Shale (Toarcian, Germany), La Voulte-sur-Rhône (Callovian, France), and Solnhofen-type plattenkalks (Kimmeridgian-Tithonian, Germany). For purposes of comparison, sizes of the eyes of several other polychelidans without preserved ommatidia were documented. Sizes of ommatidia and eyes were statistically compared against carapace length, taxonomic group, and outcrop. Results: Nine species possess eyes with square facets; Rosenfeldia oppeli (Woodward, 1866), however, displays hexagonal facets. The sizes of eyes and ommatidia are a function of carapace length. No significant differences were discerned between polychelidans from different outcrops; Eryonidae, however, have significantly smaller eyes than other groups. Discussion: Fossil eyes bearing square facets are similar to the reflective superposition eyes found in many extant decapods. As such, they are the earliest example of superposition eyes. As reflective superposition is considered plesiomorphic for Reptantia, this optic type was probably retained in Polychelida. The two smallest specimens, a Palaeopentacheles roettenbacheri (Münster, 1839) and a Hellerocaris falloti (Van Straelen, 1923), are interpreted as juveniles. Both possess square-shaped facets, a typical post-larval feature. The eye morphology of these small specimens, which are far smaller than many extant eryoneicus larvae, suggests that Jurassic polychelidans did not develop via giant eryoneicus larvae. In contrast, another species we examined, Rosenfeldia oppeli (Woodward, 1866), did not possess square-shaped facets, but rather hexagonal ones, which suggests that this species did not possess reflective superposition eyes. The hexagonal facets may indicate either another type of superposition eye (refractive or parabolic superposition), or an apposition eye. As decapod larvae possess apposition eyes with hexagonal facets, it is most parsimonious to consider eyes of R. oppeli as apposition eyes evolved through paedomorphic heterochrony. Conclusion: Polychelidan probably originally had reflective superposition. R. oppeli, however, probably gained apposition eyes through paedomorphosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This second contribution on Rhamphorhynchus based on an acid-prepared specimen provides a detailed description of the braincase, concentrating on the broken skull and its hollow bones, aiming to gather data on its pneumatisation for comparative studies between crocodiles, pterosaurs and dinosaur-birds. Computed tomographic (CT) scanning was performed to further explore these cavities in the skull bones, which are easily visible especially where the bones are broken. However, it has not been possible to observe their precise origin and connections. The skull regions where the pneumatisation is most evident are the paroccipital processes and the prootics from the endoskeletal braincase, but the precise form of the cavities is not clear, and their origin as paratympanic systems cannot be seen. The enigmatic vertebrate taxon Cyrtura temnospondyla is reassessed following the location and reuniting of both counterparts. The specimen, comprising a series of caudal vertebrae from the Tithonian Solnhofen Limestone, has variously been interpreted as derived either from a temnospondyl amphibian, or a turtle, or to be indeterminate. The redescription of this caudal series reveals that the vertebrae have a single centrum, in contrast to previous descriptions. This specimen is here interpreted to be the tail of a turtle more derived than Proganochelys and Meiolania , but is otherwise indeterminate and cannot be associated with any of the diagnosed taxa from the Solnhofen Limestone. A previously undescribed and near-complete specimen of the non-pterodactyloid pterosaur Rhamphorhynchus is briefly described. Although purchased in 1878 and held in a public collection in Dublin, Ireland ever since, this specimen has never been described and was not even mentioned in the literature until 2010. The author discusses the application to preserve stability and universality of usage of the Archaeopteryx lithographica von Meyer, 1861 species to the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature. The author says that the Commission has set aside all previous type of fixations for the species and designated BMNH 37001 as the neotype at the Natural History Museum, London, England. The author adds that the species was received from Walter J. Bock and Paul Bühler on June 5, 2006.

The Palaeontinidae (Insecta: Cicadomorpha) from the Upper Jurassic Solnhofen Limestone of Bavaria are revised. The diagnostic characters for three monotypic genera Eocicada Oppenheim, 1888, Prolystra Oppenheim, 1888 and Archipsyche Handlirsch, 1906 are reassessed based on newly discovered material. Beloptesis gigantea (Weyenbergh, 1874), B. oppenheimi Handlirsch, 1906, Limacodites mesozoicus Handlirsch, 1906, and Protopsyche braueri Handlirsch, 1906 are considered to be junior synonyms of Prolystra lithographica Oppenheim, 1888. Eocicada lameerei Handlirsch, 1908 is a junior synonym of E. microcephala Oppenheim, 1888. A key to the species of Solnhofen Palaeontinidae is presented. Solnhofen Palaeontinidae and most Cretaceous Palaeontinidae most probably form a monophyletic group based on the following characters: costal area narrow, vein RA branching from stem R basally, vein ScP not fused with vein RA, clavus much reduced and hindwing smaller. Furthermore, Solnhofen Palaeontinidae are probably basal to Cretaceous Palaeontinidae by the mesonotum lacking distinct longitudinal carinae. A fast succession from early to more derived Palaeontinidae took place during Late Jurassic times. Early Palaeontinidae declined sharply in the Late Jurassic, probably owing to the rise of newly evolved insectivorous animals like early birds and mammals. Abstract: Exceptional preservation of fossils in so-called Konservat-Lagerstätten requires specific depositional regimes excluding disturbance of bottom sediments by either wave actions and currents or by benthic fauna. We here describe a depositional model for the Eocene “Pesciara di Bolca” Konservat-Lagerstätte based on sedimentological, paleoecological, and detailed organic geochemical results. Sediments were deposited in a lagoonal-like basin with stagnant bottom waters located on an extended carbonate platform that was sheltered from open marine waters by a submarine threshold. Run-off from nearby land areas provided nutrients to support an algal community dominated by diatoms. No fossil diatom shells have been identified, but evidence for their presence is given by the high abundance of highly branched isoprenoids in extractable bitumens. Influx of terrigenous organic matter into the lagoon occurred in particular during deposition of the basal fish-bearing level L1. Here not only plant macrofossils, amber, spores and pollen but also the lipid composition indicated notable input of land plants via the presence of n-C24 to n-C32 carboxylic acids, long-chain n-alkanes (n-C27, n-C29, n-C31) and angiosperm wax triterpenoids. The redox regime in general was strongly reducing as evidenced by the high concentration of sulfur vs. organic carbon, excellent kerogen preservation as shown by high hydrogen indices, and low pristane/phytane but high phytane/n-C18 ratios. The water column was highly stratified with anoxic saline bottom and fresh surface waters. Euxinic conditions with free reduced sulfur present in the photic zone could only be detected in sediments from the L1 horizon via traces of aromatic carotenoids derived from green sulfur bacteria (chlorobiaceae), which utilize H2S in anoxygenic photosynthesis. The depositional regime is thus comparable to the lithographic limestones of Solnhofen but based on biomarker evidence lacks the high salinities postulated for the latter. Biomarker composition indicates that best preservation conditions prevailed in the basal part of the studied section (0–7 m above datum) but declined upon deposition of the upper part. We interpret the body of the Pesciara as a parasequence of the 4th order (0.01–0.5 Ma), with the lower part representing a relative sea-level lowstand and the upper part a relative sea-level highstand. In order to complete the study of the very rich early Tithonian (Hybonoticeras hybonotum Zone) radiolarian fauna from the Mühlheim Member of the Mörnsheim Formation outcropping in the Solnhofen area, the taxa of the family Saturnalidae are described. Although rather rare, the Saturnalidae of this member contain 14 species, ten of which are new. These species belong to four genera, one of which is new (Moebicircus n. gen.), and two subfamilies (Hexasaturnalinae and Saturnalinae). The taxonomy at generic level of these late Jurassic radiolarians is founded on the basis of the position of the blades along the ring and number and morphology of the spines. Type of spines (simple or forked) has either species level value or none, depending on species. Special attention was given to anomalies, which sometimes are rather frequent, since they can give Information of paleobiological and paleoecological Orders. Among them frequent cases of open ring and additional spines withDicerosaturnalis and Siamese twins skeletons withSpongosaturninus andDicerosaturnalis are to be noted. Rare earth element (REE) concentrations in biogenic apatite samples (coprolite, bone and soft-tissue) were used to investigate the environment of deposition of the celebrated Solnhofen fossil Lagersta¨tten. The measured REE patterns are similar between different localities, lithologies (flinz, fa¨ule) and levels in the Upper Solnhofen Plattenkalk, suggestive of a stable REE supply during deposition. The behaviour of cerium in the Solnhofen samples implies that bottom water conditions were not anoxic, and variations in the cerium anomaly can be explained by differences in burial rate. These results provide further geochemical support for current depositional models [Barthel, K.W., 1978. Solnhofen: Ein Blick in die Erdgeschichte. Abstract: The collection of fossil fishes from Solnhofen (Upper Jurassic, southern Germany), deposited at the Bavarian State Collection for Paleontology and Geology was examined for the detection of integument or skeletalpathologies. Among 50 studied specimens, only one halecomorph fish exhibited lesions: these are diagnosed as skin tumors. In extant taxa the causes of this disease are varied (toxins, infectious agents, physical or immunological causes, nutritional and metabolic perturbations). The morphology of these skin lesions is identical to those previously observed in fossil fishes from Monte Bolca (Eocene, northern Italy). This case study represents one of the oldest paleopathology in fossil fishes. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
