Mobile-platform measurements provide new opportunities for characterizing spatial variations in air pollution within urban areas, identifying emission sources, and enhancing knowledge of atmospheric processes. The Aclima, Inc., mobile measurement and data acquisition platform was used to equip four Google Street View cars with research-grade instruments, two of which were available for the duration of this study. On-road measurements of air quality were made during a series of sampling campaigns between May 2016 and September 2017 at high (i.e., 1 s) temporal and spatial resolution at several California locations: Los Angeles, San Francisco, and the northern San Joaquin Valley (including nonurban roads and the cities of Tracy, Stockton, Manteca, Merced, Modesto, and Turlock). The results demonstrate that the approach is effective for quantifying spatial variations in air pollutant concentrations over measurement periods as short as 2 weeks. Measurement accuracy and precision are evaluated using results of weekly performance checks and periodic audits conducted through the sampler inlets, which show that research instruments located within stationary vehicles are capable of reliably measuring nitric oxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), ozone (O3), methane (CH4), black carbon (BC), and particle number (PN) concentration, with bias and precision ranging from < 10 % for gases to < 25 % for BC and PN at 1 s time resolution. The quality of the mobile measurements in the ambient environment is examined by comparisons with data from an adjacent (< 9 m) stationary regulatory air quality monitoring site and by paired collocated vehicle comparisons, both stationary and driving. The mobile measurements indicate that United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) classifications of two Los Angeles stationary regulatory monitors' scales of representation are appropriate. Paired time-synchronous mobile measurements are used to characterize the spatial scales of concentration variations when vehicles were separated by < 1 to 10 km. A data analysis approach is developed to characterize spatial variations while limiting the confounding influence of diurnal variability. The approach is illustrated using data from San Francisco, revealing 1 km scale differences in mean NO2 and O3 concentrations up to 117 % and 46 %, respectively, of mean values during a 2-week sampling period. Band-to-band tunneling was studied in ion-implanted P/N junction diodes with profiles representative of present and future silicon complementary metal-oxide-silicon (CMOS) field effect transistors. Measurements were done over a wide range of temperatures and implant parameters. Profile parameters were derived from analysis of capacitance versus voltage characteristics, and compared to secondary-ion mass spectroscopy analysis. When the tunneling current was plotted against the effective tunneling distance (tunneling distance corrected for band curvature) a quasi-universal exponential reduction of tunneling current versus, tunneling distance was found with an attenuation length of 0.38 nm, corresponding to a tunneling effective mass of 0.29 times the free electron mass (m 0), and an extrapolated tunneling current at zero tunnel distance of 5.3× 10 7 A/cm² at 300 K. These results are directly applicable for predicting drain to substrate currents in CMOS transistors on bulk silicon, and body currents in CMOS transistors in silicon-on-insulator. Digital logic technology has been extraordinarily successful and has been fueled by incredible gains in integration density and performance achieved over the years following Moore's law. This has led to societal changes where more and more everyday functions are aided by smart devices following the path to artificial intelligence. However, in the field of deep machine learning, even this technology falls short, partly because device scaling gains are no longer easy to come by, but also due to intractable energy costs of computation. Deep learning, using labeled data, can be mapped onto artificial neural networks, arrays where the inputs and outputs are connected by programmable weights, and which can perform pattern recognition functions. The learning process consists of finding the optimum weights however this learning process is very slow for large problems. Exploiting the fact that weights do not need to be determined with high precision, as long as they can be updated precisely, the device community has recognized that analog computation approaches, using physical arrays of memristor (programmable resistor) type devices could offer significant speedup and power advantages compared to pure digital, or pure software approaches. On the other hand, the history of analog computation is not reassuring since the rule has been that more capable digital devices invariably supplant analog function. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) initiated the national PM2.5Chemical Speciation Monitoring Network (CSN) in 2000 to support evaluation of long-term trends and to better quantify the impact of sources on particulate matter (PM) concentrations in the size range below 2.5 μm aerodynamic diameter (PM2.5; fine particles). The network peaked at more than 260 sites in 2005. In response to the 1999 Regional Haze Rule and the need to better understand the regional transport of PM, EPA also augmented the long-existing Interagency Monitoring of Protected Visual Environments (IMPROVE) visibility monitoring network in 2000, adding nearly 100 additional IMPROVE sites in rural Class 1 Areas across the country. Both networks measure the major chemical components of PM2.5using historically accepted filter-based methods. Components measured by both networks include major anions, carbonaceous material, and a series of trace elements. CSN also measures ammonium and other cations directly, whereas IMPROVE estimates ammonium assuming complete neutralization of the measured sulfate and nitrate. IMPROVE also measures chloride and nitrite. In general, the field and laboratory approaches used in the two networks are similar; however, there are numerous, often subtle differences in sampling and chemical analysis methods, shipping, and quality control practices. These could potentially affect merging the two data sets when used to understand better the impact of sources on PM concentrations and the regional nature and long-range transport of PM2.5. This paper describes, for the first time in the peer-reviewed literature, these networks as they have existed since 2000, outlines differences in field and laboratory approaches, provides a summary of the analytical parameters that address data uncertainty, and summarizes major network changes since the inception of CSN.ImplicationsTwo long-term chemical speciation particle monitoring networks have operated simultaneously in the United States since 2001, when the EPA began regular operations of its PM2.5 Chemical Speciation Monitoring Network (IMPROVE began in 1988). It has recently been suggested that ferroelectric (FE) negative capacitance effects can be used to achieve steep subthreshold slope field-effect transistors, which are greatly desired for reducing energy consumption in modern digital electronics. Here, we propose that this concept can be improved by the introduction of a very thin metal or metal-like layer (a quantum metal) between the FE and the semiconductor channel. We show how to design this layer so that it attenuates the polarization charge of the FE, applying an appropriate charge to the semiconductor, while at the same time presenting a relatively constant capacitance to the FE layer, as is needed to stabilize the negative capacitance regime. For homogeneous polarization, we estimate that this device (a QMFeFET) can have extremely steep subthreshold characteristics (2 mV/decade over 11 decades) and that its energy and delay performance are advantageous. Four articles in the journal Alzheimer's and Dementia in 2011 describe new criteria for Alzheimer's disease (AD) dementia and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) due to the AD pathophysiological process (MCI due to AD), as well as the underlying rationale for them. The new criteria also include preclinical AD criteria but these are intended purely for research purposes. The new criteria emphasise that the AD pathophysiological process starts years and perhaps decades before clinical symptoms, and that biomarkers can detect amyloid βdeposition and the effects of neurodegeneration in the brain. The criteria are recommendations based upon consensus meetings and will require future validation. Nonetheless, the authors believe that they are immediately helpful to the practising clinician, providing more accurate and specific guidelines for the diagnosis of AD dementia and MCI due to AD. As new diagnostic tools and treatments for AD become available, diagnoses using these criteria will enable patients with AD dementia, MCI due to AD and eventually preclinical AD to receive the best possible care. The growing use of complementary and alternative medications (CAM) for cognitive enhancement in both healthy elderly and patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other dementing disorders has led to rapidly growing literature with conflicting results. There are studies that suggest benefit from CAM in both the healthy elderly and dementing patients as well as studies that suggest no benefit for either group. Because of the lack of regulatory oversight (e.g., Food and Drug Administration [FDA], European Medicines Agency [EMeA]), there are currently no generally accepted guidelines to standardize the types of studies that are conducted. Due to the absence of guidelines that set standards for study design, outcomes, and analysis, it is difficult to compare studies with conflicting results. For example, Ginkgo biloba has been shown both to provide benefit and no benefit on cognition in both healthy elderly and patients with AD. Reconciling these divergent studies has been challenging because both sides often use divergent methodologies and designs and widely varying cognitive measures that may or may not be validated in the populations being studied. In this article, the authors suggest a roadmap for establishing guidelines for the evaluation of CAM in cognition. They then apply these guidelines to the conflicting literature on Ginkgo to determine whether they might help resolve the conflicting results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article utilizes data collected through the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS)--supported Workforce Issues in Library and Information Science 1 (WILIS 1) survey of graduates (1964-2007) of the five library and information science master's programs in North Carolina to consider career patterns and what these career patterns tell us about recruitment, retention, and retirement of school library media specialists (SLMSs). A life course approach is used to interpret the survey data and to suggest areas needing attention in recruiting and retaining SLMSs and planning for their retirement. Perhaps the most noteworthy finding is that a major influence on turnover of SLMSs is the lack of opportunities for career growth and development. A current re-engineering of the United States routine ambient monitoring networks intended to improve the balance in addressing both regulatory and scientific objectives is addressed in this paper. Key attributes of these network modifications include the addition of collocated instruments to produce multiple pollutant characterizations across a range of representative urban and rural locations in a new network referred to as the National Core Monitoring Network (NCore). The NCore parameters include carbon monoxide (CO), sulfur dioxide (SO2), reactive nitrogen (NOy), ozone (O3), and ammonia (NH3) gases and the major fine particulate matter (PM2.5) aerosol components (ions, elemental and organic carbon fractions, and trace metals). The addition of trace gas instruments, deployed at existing chemical speciation sites and designed to capture concentrations well below levels of national air quality standards, is intended to support both long-term epidemiological studies and regional-scale air quality model evaluation. In addition to designing the multiple pollutant NCore network, steps were taken to assess the current networks on the basis of spatial coverage and redundancy criteria, and mechanisms were developed to facilitate incorporation of continuously operating particulate matter instruments. Background: Chemotherapy is the treatment of cancer with drugs, often used as either adjuvant or neoadjuvant or in conjunction with radiation and surgery. Unfortunately, majority of the drugs are toxic to normal tissues, the toxicity being resulting from multidrug protocol used to induce remissions and achieve tumor care. While it has been demonstrated for compounds like the 2-deoxy-glucose (2-DG) used as a modulator for radiation-induced damages, such studies were rarely reported for chemotherapeutic drugs. Objective: To study the effect of 2-DG on radiation-and chemotherapeutic drug-induced chromosomal aberrations in normal and tumor cells exposed in vitro. Materials and Methods: The peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBLs) and BMG-1 cells were exposed to radiation and chemotherapeutic drugs (bleomycin and mitomycin-C) in the presence and absence of 2-DG. The treated cells were cultured for various durations, arrested at either metaphase or cytokinesis stage of the cell cycle. The stable and unstable aberrations were recorded using Giemsa staining and FISH technique. The cell cycle kinetics was studied using fluorescence plus Giemsa (FPG) staining. Results: The presence of 2-DG reduced stable and unstable chromosome aberrations (CA) significantly (P < 0.001), in PBLs induced by radiation, bleomycin and mitomycin-C, when compared to cells treated with radiation or the drugs and increased significantly in BMG cells (P < 0.001). Furthermore, the presence of 2-DG altered the cell cycle kinetics in the PBLs and BMG-1 cells. Thus the overall results showed protection effect on the normal cell damages induced by radiation and chemotherapeutic drugs, while sensitizes the tumor cell. Conclusion: The obtained results suggest that 2-DG in combination with radiotherapy/chemotherapy could lead to an improvement in tumor therapy by sensitizing the tumor cells while protecting the normal cells. The article considers the Particulate Matter Supersites Program air quality monitoring program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Results obtained from the Supersites Program and their application to air quality policy development by the EPA, state and local government agencies and private business enterprises are discussed.

In 1998, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) initiated a major air quality program known as the Particulate Matter (PM) Supersites Program. The Supersites Program was a multiyear, $27 million air quality monitoring program consisting of eight regional air quality projects located throughout the United States, each with differing atmospheric pollution conditions resulting from variations in source emissions and meteorology. The overall goal of the program was to elucidate source-receptor relationships and atmospheric processes leading to PM accumulation on urban and regional scales; thus providing the scientific underpinning for modeling and data analysis efforts to support State Implementation Plans and more effective risk management approaches for PM. The program had three main objectives: (1) conduct methods development and evaluation, (2) characterize ambient PM, and (3) support health effects and exposure research. This paper provides a synthesis of key scientific findings from the Supersites Program and related studies. EPA developed 16 science/policy-relevant questions in conjunction with state and other federal agencies, Regional Planning Organizations, and the private sector. These questions were addressed to the extent possible, even given the vast amount of new information available from the Supersites Program, in a series of papers published as a special issue of the Journal of Air & Waste Management Association (February 2008). This synthesis also includes discussions of: (1) initial Supersites Program support for air quality management efforts in specific locations throughout the United States; (2) selected policy-relevant insights, based on atmospheric sciences findings, useful to air quality managers and decision makers planning emissions management strategies to address current and future PM National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) and network planning and implementation; (3) selected health-relevant insights interpreted from atmospheric sciences findings in light of future directions for health and exposure scientists planning studies of the effects of PM on human health; and (4) selected knowledge gaps to guide future research. Finally, given the scope and depth of research and findings from the Supersites Program, this paper provides a reference source so readers can glean a general understanding of the overall research conducted and its policy-relevant insights. Experimental-modeling investigation of the transient thermal crosstalk between the field-effect transistors implemented on a silicon-on-insulator substrate is reported. The measurements were performed using a high-speed electrical pulse—probe sampling technique, which allowed detection of thermally modulated subthreshold currents. The technique achieved a temperature resolution of ∼50 mK, a time resolution of 5 ns, and a temperature sensitivity of ∼0.6 μA/K. The finite-element method was used to solve the heat diffusion equation and to obtain the temperature profiles for the given device structures. The combined high-resolution experimental—simulation approach allowed the study of the thermal crosstalk between two adjacent devices and probe the local temperature at different locations of the structure. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) established the Particulate Matter (PM) Supersites Program to provide key stakeholders (government and private sector) with significantly improved information needed to develop effective and efficient strategies for reducing PM on urban and regional scales. All Supersites projects developed and evaluated methods and instruments, and significant advances have been made and applied within these programs to yield new insights to our understanding of PM accumulation in air as well as improved source-receptor relationships. The tested methods include a variety of continuous and semicontinuous instruments typically with a time resolution of an hour or less. These methods often overcome many of the limitations associated with measuring atmospheric PM mass concentrations by daily filter-based methods (e.g., potential positive or negative sampling artifacts). Semicontinuous coarse and ultrafine mass measurement methods also were developed and evaluated. Other semicontinuous monitors tested measured the major components of PM such as nitrate, sulfate, ammonium, organic and elemental carbon, trace elements, and water content of the aerosol as well as methods for other physical properties of PM, such as number concentration, size distribution, and particle density. Particle mass spectrometers, although unlikely to be used in national routine monitoring networks in the foreseeable future because of their complex technical requirements and cost, are mentioned here because of the wealth of new information they provide on the size-resolved chemical composition of atmospheric particles on a near continuous basis. Particle mass spectrometers likely represent the greatest advancement in PM measurement technology during the last decade. The improvements in time resolution achieved by the reported semicontinuous methods have proven to be especially useful in characterizing ambient PM, and are becoming essential in allowing scientists to investigate sources of particulate pollution and to probe into the dynamics and mechanisms of aerosol formation in the atmosphere. Abstract: Dissertation advising is an important form of mentoring. To investigate the impact of dissertation advising over time, advisor and committee member names were collected for 2400 dissertations completed over a 40-year period (1964–2004) in 32 North American information and library science schools. Several mentoring impact metrics are reported for a subset of the data, including the number of dissertations advised, the number of dissertation committees served on, the ratio of advising to committee membership, and the fractional “mpact” that weights advising and committee membership. The subset consists of data for six schools that produced at least three dozen dissertations and for which complete data is available. The data and resulting “mpact” metrics offer new ways to assess faculty impact and to investigate the nature and growth of a field. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

A simulation study is carried out to assess the competitiveness of metal gate stacks for low-power and high- performance technologies using realistic oxynitride and high- permittivity gate dielectric stacks having insulator leakages appropriate for each application. In the first part of this paper, the metal-gate work function is fixed at a value near midgap. For this value of work function, the performance (obtained from mixed-mode simulations of inverter delay chains) of metal gate stacks is found to exceed that of polysilicon gate stacks for low-power applications, but to be uncompetitive for high-performance applications. Both of these observations are explained by understanding the role of carrier confinement determined by the channel doping required for each application. In the second part of this paper, the metal-gate work function is allowed to vary in order to obtain the optimal work-function ranges for each application. Metal gate stacks are shown to be especially suitable for low-power applications over a wide range of possible work functions, with optimal performance away from the band edges. For high-performance applications, work functions near the band edges yield the best performance, but significant gains compared to polysilicon-gated devices are found only when additional scaling is achieved through a use of a high-permittivity gate insulator. Fewer than one-half of all Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients are currently diagnosed: approximately 25% are treated with antidementia compounds. Screening has been proposed to help combat underdiagnosis of AD. An emerging consensus suggest that the three keys to the successful treatment of Alzheimer's disease are early detection, use of currently approved medications to provide symptomatic treatment, and development of medications to slow and eventually halt disease progression. If early detection of Alzheimer's disease is the first step, screening would seem to be an important strategy. We review the arguments for and against screening and suggest several strategies and instruments that may be helpful in the context of screening for Alzheimer's disease in primary care practice. Various nonplanar, multigate field-effect transistors (FET) structures have been reported that offer better gate con- trol than planar MOSFETs. In the nanometer regime, however, multigate (nanowire) structures also suffer strong quantum con- finement, which causes deleterious effects such as large threshold voltage variation. In this paper, we propose a general approach to compare planar versus nonplanar FETs with the consideration of both electrostatic integrity (gate control) and quantum confinement (the so-called "EQ approach"). With this EQ approach, we show that the cylindrical wire FET and the planar double-gate MOSFET have approximately equal scaling capability for a (001)-oriented wafer, while the nonplanar wire structures are significantly better for other wafer orientations [e.g., (011)] where the effective mass in the confinement direction of the planar MOSFET is relatively small. The article introduces the January 2, 2004 issue of the journal Aerosol Science and Technology. In July 1997, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued new National Ambient Air Quality Standards for fine particulate matter (PM). EPA recognized that an improved understanding of the key sources, development of the most cost effective control strategies, and health risks associated with PM would depend on the availability of high quality measurements of PM composition, and concentration over a variety of spatial and temporal scales. This special issue of reports on results from various air quality measurement projects and spans the full range of objectives for these projects.

Collaboration is often a critical aspect of scientific research, which is dominated by complex problems, rapidly changing technology, dynamic growth of knowledge, and highly specialized areas of expertise. An individual scientist can seldom provide all of the expertise and resources necessary to address complex research problems. This paper describes collaboration among a group of scientists, and considers how their experiences are socially shaped. The scientists were members of a newly formed distributed, multi-disciplinary academic research center that was organized into four multi-disciplinary research groups. Each group had 14 to 34 members, including faculty, postdoctoral fellows and students, at four geographically dispersed universities. To investigate challenges that emerge in establishing scientific collaboration, data were collected about members' previous and current collaborative experiences, perceptions regarding collaboration, and work practices during the center's first year of operation. The data for the study includes interviews with members of the center, observations of videoconferences and meetings, and a center-wide sociometric survey. Data analysis has led to the development of a framework that identifies forms of collaboration that emerged among scientists (e.g., complementary and integrative collaboration) and associated factors, which influenced collaboration including personal compatibility, work connections, incentives, and infrastructure. These results may inform the specification of social and organizational practices, which are needed to establish collaboration in distributed, multi-disciplinary research centers. Context: Several over-the-counter treatments are marketed as having the ability to improve memory, attention, and related cognitive functions in as little as 4 weeks. These claims, however, are generally not supported by well-controlled clinical studies. Objective: To evaluate whether ginkgo, an over-the-counter agent marketed as enhancing memory, improves memory in elderly adults as measured by objective neuropsychological tests and subjective ratings. Design: Six-week randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group trial. Setting and Participants: Community-dwelling volunteer men (n = 98) and women (n = 132) older than 60 years with Mini-Mental State Examination scores greater than 26 and in generally good health were recruited by a US academic center via newspaper advertisements and enrolled over a 26-month period from July 1996 to September 1998. Intervention: Participants were randomly assigned to receive ginkgo, 40 mg 3 times per day (n = 115), or matching placebo (n = 115). Main Outcome Measures: Standardized neuropsychological tests of verbal and nonverbal learning and memory, attention and concentration, naming and expressive language, participant self-report on a memory questionnaire, and caregiver clinical global impression of change as completed by a companion. Results: Two hundred three participants (88%) completed the protocol. Analysis of the modified intent-to-treat population (all 219 participants returning for evaluation) indicated that there were no significant differences between treatment groups on any outcome measure. Analysis of the fully evaluable population (the 203 who complied with treatment and returned for evaluation) also indicated no significant differences for any outcome measure. The chemical composition of PM[sub 2.5] was investigated at four sites (Rubidoux, CA, Phoenix, AZ, Philadelphia, PA, and Research Triangle Park, NC) in January and February of 1999. Three samplers were used to determine both the overall mass and the chemical composition of the aerosol. Teflon filters were weighed for total mass. Ions were analyzed using ion chromatography. Elements were determined using X-ray fluorescence. Organic and elemental carbon were measured using a thermo-optical method. At all of the sites, reconstructed mass was observed to be greater than or equal to the measured mass. Good ionic balance was found for ammonium, nitrate, and sulfate at each of the sites. Overall, the chemical composition of the aerosol for each site was in good agreement with the expected composition based upon previous studies, with the exception of relatively high nitrate contribution to the total mass at Philadelphia. Good agreement was found between the predicted amount of sulfate by XRF analysis of sulfur and the sulfate measured by ion chromatography. As expected, sulfate was a more important contributor to the total mass at the East Coast sites. Nitrate contributed more to the total mass at the West Coast sites and was an important factor in the highest observed mass concentration at Rubidoux. Teflon filters appear to lose nitrate to a greater extent than heat-treated quartz fiber filters. Organic carbon was also found to be the largest part of the aerosol mass on minimum days for all sites and a significant portion of the mass on other days with 25-50% of the total mass at all of the sites. At three of the sites, organic carbon (OC) collected on denuded filters was less than that found on nondenuded samples, indicating an absorptive artifact on the quartz fiber filters. It was also found that the crustal component to PM[sub 2.5] was highest at Phoenix. PM[sub 2.5] was also found to contribute significantly to the PM[sub 10] particle mass at all the sites. Air pollution monitoring using mobile ground-based measurement platforms can provide high-quality spatiotemporal air pollution information. As mobile air quality monitoring campaigns extend to entire fleets of vehicles and integrate smaller-scale air quality sensors, it is important to address the need to assess these measurements in a scalable manner. We explore the collocation-based evaluation of air quality measurements in a mobile platform using fixed regulatory sites as a reference. We compare two approaches: a standard collocation assessment technique, in which the mobile platform is parked near the fixed regulatory site for a period of time, and an expanded approach, which uses measurements while the mobile platform is in motion in the general vicinity of the fixed regulatory site. Based on the availability of fixed-reference-site data, we focus on three pollutants (ozone, nitrogen dioxide, and nitric oxide) with distinct atmospheric lifetimes and behaviors. We compare measurements from a mobile laboratory with regulatory site measurements in Denver, CO, USA, and in the San Francisco Bay Area, CA, USA. Our 1-month Denver dataset includes both parked collocation periods near the fixed regulatory sites and general driving patterns around the sites, allowing a direct comparison of the parked and mobile collocation techniques on the same dataset. We show that the mobile collocation approach produces similar performance statistics, including coefficients of determination and mean bias errors, to the standard parked collocation technique. This is particularly true when the comparisons are restricted to specific road types, with residential streets showing the closest agreement and highways showing the largest differences. We extend our analysis to a larger (yearlong) dataset in California, where we explore the relationships between the mobile measurements and the fixed reference sites on a larger scale. We show that using a 40 h running median converges to within ± 4 ppbv of the fixed reference site for nitrogen dioxide and ozone and up to about 8 ppbv for nitric oxide. We propose that this agreement can be leveraged to assess instrument performance over time during large-scale mobile monitoring campaigns. We demonstrate an example of how such relationships can be employed during large-scale monitoring campaigns using small sensors to identify potential measurement biases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The 1995 Integrated Monitoring Study (IMS95) is part of the Phase 1 planning efforts for the California Regional PM[sub10]/PM[sub2.5] Air Quality Study. Thus, the overall objectives of IMS95 are to (1) fill information gaps needed for planning an effective field program later this decade; (2) develop an improved conceptual model for pollution buildup (PM[sub10], PM[sub2.5], and aerosol precursors) in the San Joaquin Valley; (3) develop a uniform air quality, meteorological, and emissions database that can be used to perform initial evaluations of aerosol and fog air quality models; and (4) provide early products that can be used to help with the development of State Implementation Plans for PM[sub10]. Consideration of the new particulate matter standards were also included in the planning and design of IMS95, although they were proposed standards when IMS95 was in the planning process. Human participants who 5 years earlier participated in studies of acquisition of the classically conditioned eyeblink response to a tone conditioned stimulus (CS) and an air puff unconditioned stimulus (UCS) returned to the laboratory to test for retention of the conditioned response (CR). Retention consisted of 20 tone CS-alone presentations. Young adult participants (23-31 years of age at the time of retention testing) showed good retention of the CR (45%), middle-aged participants (45-52 years) showed reduced retention (28%), and older participants (69-78 years) showed little evidence of retention (< 5%). Retention testing was followed by reacquisition of the CR in which the CS and the UCS were again paired. The ability to reacquire the CR also showed a decline with age. The article cites a study that investigated hypothesis related to differential Rorschach scores of successfully and unsuccessfully placed mental defectives. The subjects of this study were 52 mental defectives who were administered the Rorschach test prior to their parole placement as a routine psychological test. They were all placed on parole during 1952 and 1953. If the placed individual were still in the same placement at the end of an eight-month period, he was adjudged a successful parolee.
