Abstract

This article studies the coverage of El Salvador in Time, Newsweek, and U.S. News & World Report from several months before the FMLN offensive of November 1989 to the peace accords of January 1992. The magazines are found to share a 'media package' that depicts U.S. policy on El Salvador as well meaning. The range of views in the coverage corresponds to the range of views among ruling U.S. elites. Differences in coverage are connected to each news organization's world view and its links to specific segments of the elites.

4. Tasks and Status: Newspaper Copy Editing and the Division of Newsroom Labor.

Abstract

Colonial printers were more or less forced to take sides during the Revolutionary era. As they did so, their social status changed from that akin to mechanics to that of spokespersons of a social movement. From this time on, the gradual separation of editor from printer formed a social basis for defining a journalist's tasks as editorial, not production. The position now known as copy editor emerged after the Civil War, as newspapers' growth led to a more complex division of newsroom labor. This process continued into the 20th century, with the copy editor becoming increasingly more removed from the processes of gathering and writing the news. At the same time, the reporter's social status began to rise. As a result of these two trends, the copy editor's status declined markedly. (Fifty-eight references are appended.) (Author)

Abstract

This article analyzes the print media's ideological framing of the 1991 story of boxer Sugar Ray Leonard's admission of having physically abused his wife and abused cocaine and alcohol. We examined all news stories and editorials on the Leonard story in two major daily newspapers and one national sports daily. We found that all three papers framed the story as a "drug story," while ignoring or marginalizing the "wife abuse" story. We argue that sports writers utilized an existing ideological "jocks-on-drugs" media package that framed this story as a moral drama of individual sin and public redemption. Finally, we describe and analyze the mechanisms through which the wife abuse story was ignored or marginalized. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This research examines the news coverage of the Rodney King beating and trial. It studies all of the reportage in the Washington Post (63 pieces) and the New York Times (86 pieces), from the beating (March 3, 1991) to the verdict in the first trial (April 29, 1992). It finds that instances of overt racism were few but that inferential racism was prevalent, illustrating a "grammar of race" which transformed the King case's physical and structural violence such that King became a symbol of a cultural Other, a threat to society rather than a victim of society.
