Objectives: To explore historical and contemporary factors and processes that influenced the emergence of WANEL and analyse how the formation process has influenced the network’s continued existence and sustainability and lesson for sub-regional health policy and systems research (HPSR) networking in Low –and –Middle –Income Countries (LMICs)Design: Qualitative explanatory case study which used process tracing to chart the formation and development of WANEL.Methods: Data was obtained through document reviews, semi-structured interviews, group discussions, and partici-pant observation. Data was analysed using thematic content analysis.Results: The emergence of WANEL was made possible by several factors, including support from a network of senior HPSR champions and institutions across West Africa; sustained funding from IDRC Canada, a reputable funder with a track record in supporting research capacity development in LMICs; learning and networking opportunities provided by CHEPSAA Emerging Leaders and the Institute of Tropical Medicine Antwerp Emerging Voices for Global Health initiative. Its formation followed a mix of emergent and engineered processes.Conclusion: WANEL is the first and currently the only sub-regional network for early and mid-career health policy and systems researchers and practitioners in West Africa. To ensure its long-term sustainability, the network needs to put in place mechanisms to constantly attract and develop the next generation of early and mid-career researchers, maintain links with senior researchers, strengthen its capacity for coordination and facilitation, and develop a plan for its long-term financial sustainability.

This paper describes the process for developing, validating and disseminating through a train-the-trainer (TOT) event a standardised curriculum for public health capacity building for points of entry (POE) staff across the 15-member state Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) that reflects both international standards and national guidelines.A five-phase process was used in developing the curriculum: phase (1) assessment of existing materials developed by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Africa CDC and the West African Economic and Monetary Union, (2) design of retained and new, harmonised content, (3) validation by the national leadership to produce final content, (4) implementation of the harmonised curriculum during a regional TOT, and (5) evaluation of the curriculum.Of the nine modules assessed in English and French, the technical team agreed to retain six harmonised modules providing materials for 10 days of intensive training. Following the TOT, most participants (n=28/30, 93.3%) indicated that the International Health Regulations and emergency management modules were relevant to their work and 96.7% (n=29/30) reported that the training should be cascaded to POE staff in their countries.The ECOWAS harmonised POE curriculum provides a set of training materials and expectations for national port health and POE staff to use across the region. This initiative contributes to reducing the effort required by countries to identify emergency preparedness and response capacity-building tools for border health systems in the Member States in a highly connected region.

L’objectif de cette recherche était d’étudier l’incidence et les facteurs de risque de survenue de complications du cathétérisme veineux périphérique (CVP) chez les patients dans les services des urgences médicale et chirurgicale du Centre hospitalier universitaire Souro Sanou de Bobo Dioulasso. Il s’est agi d’une étude transversale à visée analytique qui s’est déroulée du 4 juin au 3 novembre 2018. Il a été calculé l’incidence et identifié les facteurs de risque de survenue des complications. Des 511 patients inclus dans l’étude, la moyenne d’âge était de 44,7 (95%IC : 43,1 - 46,3) ans. Aussi, 43,1% (95%IC: 39,0 % – 47,0 %) soit 220 des 511 patients ont développé une complication. Les complications étaient : phlébites (29,2%), infiltrations (7,8%), retraits accidentels (4,1%), et extravasations (1,9%). Les facteurs de risque liés à la survenue de complications étaient : sexe des patients, durée du cathétérisme, lavage simple ou friction avec une solution hydroalcoolique des mains, et utilisation d’antibiotiques en thérapie intraveineuse. Pour réduire le risque de complications, il faut respecter les règles de prévention contre les infections, la durée du cathétérisme, les précautions à l’utilisation des antibiotiques en thérapie intraveineuse, surveillance plus minutieuse chez les patientes, et sensibiliser les prestataires hommes.Mots-clés: cathétérisme veineux périphérique, complications, facteurs, contrôle des infections, qualité des soins, management des casEnglish Title: Offering quality care: Factors contributing to the occurrence of complications during the periphéral venous catheterism in the National teaching hospital Souro Sanou of Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina FasoEnglish AbstractThe objective of this study was to assess the incidence and risk factors for complications of peripheral venous catheterism (PVC) complications in the management of patients from the medical and surgical emergency departments of the National teaching hospital Souro Sanou in Bobo-Dioulasso. This was a cross-sectional study that took place from June 4 to November 3, 2018. The incidence was calculated and risk factors for complications were identified. Of the 511 patients included in the study, the average age was 44.7 (95%IC: 43.1 - 46.3) years-old. Also, 43.1% (CI95%: 39.0% - 47.0%) 220 of the 511 patients developed a complication.. Complications were: phlebitis (29.2%), infiltrations (7.8%), accidental withdrawals (4.1%), and extravasations (1.9%). Risk factors for complications following PVC included: gender of patients, duration of catheterization, simple washing or friction with hydroalcoholic hand solution, and use of antibiotics in intravenous therapy. To reduce the risk of complications during PVC, there is a need to respect: infection prevention rules, length of catheterism, precautions for using antibiotics in intravenous therapy, more careful monitoring of female patients, and sensitize male health workers.Keywords: peripheral venous catheterism, complications, factors, infection control, care quality, case management

La satisfaction des usagers des établissements sanitaires fait partie de l’appréciation de la qualité des soins. L’objectif était d’étudier la satisfaction des patients hospitalisés dans les services du département de médecine du Centre hospitalier universitaire Souro Sanou (CHUSS) de Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso. Il s’est agi d’une étude transversale à visée analytique conduite en 8 mois. Les domaines de satisfaction ont été calculés selon le modèle SAPHORA (version 7). Des 294 patients éligibles, 250 (85,0 %) patients ont été retenus dont 42,0 % de femmes. L’âge moyen des patients était de 47,1 (± 17,9) ans. Les domaines à score faible étaient : niveau global de satisfaction, accueil, communication avec le personnel, restauration et organisation de la sortie. Les patients plus âgés et ceux à durée d'hospitalisation plus longue étaient plus satisfaits. Les 94,0 % des patients sans assurance maladie étaient moins satisfaits.Les scores des domaines de satisfaction par service et le score global de satisfaction étaient inférieurs à 50,0 %. Les différences entre les services étaient en lien avec : accueil, qualité humaine du personnel, soins médicaux, hôtellerie, restauration, coûts, et niveau global de satisfaction. The research objective was to assess the inpatients satisfaction from the medical department at the Souro Sanou National and Teaching Hospital (SSNTH) in Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso. The study type was cross-sectional, analytical, that lasted in 8 months. The satisfaction levels were calculated according to the SAPHORA model (version 7). Among the 294 eligible patients, 250 (85.0%) of them were selected with 42% of women. The mean age of the patients was 47.1 (± 17.9) years old. The low score domains were: overall level of satisfaction, reception, restoration and organization of the outing. Older patients and those with longer hospital stays were more satisfied. The 94.0% of patients without health insurance were less satisfied. Scores of satisfaction domains by service and the overall satisfaction score were all less than 50.0%. Differences between services were related to: hospitality, human quality of staff, medical care, hospitality, restoration, costs and overall level of satisfaction. The improvement of the satisfaction of inpatients passes by the respect of the fundamental needs of the patients and by a reorganization of the services with a committed staff, for quality of health care and services.Keywords: Satisfaction, quality, care, Bobo-Dioulasso, patients, hospital
