Effective searching on Chemical Abstracts Online involves an understanding of how the system searches to allow users to select terms and phrases that will generate matches. The Basic Index searches the article title, keywords and index headings among other areas and so users should consider how their topic would appear in those categories. A detailed analysis of each access term category is included with examples to help users develop a searching strategy.

Organic chemistry often involves research questions for information sources that may not be generally known. A list of ready-to-use lecture material, organized under common questions asked in organic chemistry, concerning information sources is included and can be used by anyone from the undergraduate to professional level.

SciFinder Scholar allows infrequent searchers to search CAplus, CASREACT, and Registry databases from Chemical Abstract Services. The program resides on individual computers and conducts searches over the Internet. Searches by author name, research topic, and chemical substance or reaction can be performed. Chemical substances can be searched by drawing the structure, by name, by registry number or by molecular formula.

Lists and discusses factors affecting presearch interviews; common elements of the interview; and components of interviews with new or infrequent users, experienced users of search services, and on-site users. Do's and don'ts for library staff members during a search and skills and attributes for effective presearch interviews are also listed. (RBF)

The rationale supporting fee-for-service programs in academic libraries is strong and the need for services in the community is evident to librarians who already provide such service free of charge or turn away requests. Libraries interested in establishing fee-based programs for non-university users are confronted with difficult issues and conflicts. Knowledge of these may help establish a program that serves the needs of clients and the library, contributes to the University's public relations and do it all with confidence in its legal and ethical positions. Since 1979 senior chemistry majors at the University of Rochester have learned to search chemical databases online. in 1984 this instruction was extended to faculty, graduate students and other research staff in several University departments. Science librarians at the University of Rochester are planning a user-oriented science and engineering library that combines traditional and electronic features. Consultation with users, library staff, and technical experts was important in enabling the planners to achieve their objectives. The article describes decisions the planners made on such matters as library layout, electrical and telecommunications systems, lighting, microcomputers, and reference and circulation/reserve desks. Effective information services support the mission of the university, invrease productivity of the library's clientle, improve credibility of the library and librarian, and produce strong advocates of library priorities within the university community. Methods of identifying user groups are described, as are examples of user-oriented services (isntructional programs, reference service, computer searching, current awareness services, provision of documents, photocopy services, intra-university delivery, and collection development).
