Abstract

Humans rely increasingly on sensors to address grand challenges and to improve quality of life in the era of digitalization and big data. For ubiquitous sensing, flexible sensors are developed to overcome the limitations of conventional rigid counterparts. Despite rapid advancement in bench-side research over the last decade, the market adoption of flexible sensors remains limited. To ease and to expedite their deployment, here, we identify bottlenecks hindering the maturation of flexible sensors and propose promising solutions. We first analyze challenges in achieving satisfactory sensing performance for real-world applications and then summarize issues in compatible sensor-biology interfaces, followed by brief discussions on powering and connecting sensor networks. Issues en route to commercialization and for sustainable growth of the sector are also analyzed, highlighting environmental concerns and emphasizing nontechnical issues such as business, regulatory, and ethical considerations. Additionally, we look at future intelligent flexible sensors. In proposing a comprehensive roadmap, we hope to steer research efforts towards common goals and to guide coordinated development strategies from disparate communities. Through such collaborative efforts, scientific breakthroughs can be made sooner and capitalized for the betterment of humanity.

Abstract

High-quality transparent electrodes are indispensable components of flexible optoelectronic devices as they guarantee sufficient light transparency and electrical conductivity. Compared to commercial indium tin oxide, metal nanowires are considered ideal candidates as flexible transparent electrodes (FTEs) owing to their superior optoelectronic properties, excellent mechanical flexibility, solution treatability, and higher compatibility with semiconductors. However, certain key challenges associated with material preparation and device fabrication remain for the practical application of metal nanowire-based electrodes. In this review, we discuss state-of-the-art solution-processed metal nanowire-based FTEs and their applications in flexible and stretchable optoelectronic devices. Specifically, the important properties of FTEs and a cost-benefit analysis of existing technologies are introduced, followed by a summary of the synthesis strategy, key properties, and fabrication technologies of the nanowires. Subsequently, we explore the applications of metal-nanowire-based FTEs in different optoelectronic devices including solar cells, photodetectors, and light-emitting diodes. Abstract

Owing to compact size and affordability, wearable photoplethysmogram sensors provide real‐time physiological parameters that are critical for vital signs monitoring. However, the measurement accuracy, especially during physical activities, is the main obstacle toward clinical practice. Here, ring‐shaped ultraflexible organic photodetectors （OPDs） are proposed that can form conformal contact with the skin fingerprints and monitor pulse wave under faint light source of ≈22 µW cm−2. The ring‐shape and ultraflexible design, together with optimized donor‐acceptor composition, active layer thickness, and large active area (0.1 cm2) endow the OPDs with low dark current (3.66 × 10−10 A cm−2 at −1 V), high detectivity (1.5 × 1013 Jones), and motion artifact‐free when moving at a speed of 5 cm s−1. We developed a flexible imager comprising low‐temperature polycrystalline silicon thin‐film transistors and organic photodiodes. The developed flexible imager has high‐resolution and high‐speed readout characteristics. Owing to these characteristics, pulse wave signals can be measured, and the images of fingerprints and veins can be obtained. This paper presents an optical biosensor system including a TFT (thin‐film transistor) sensor array and silicon IC to capture vein images, record PPG (photoplethysmography) signals and generate blood perfusion images. Abstract

Following the 3rd release of the "Emerging PV reports", the best achievements in the performance of emerging photovoltaic (e‐PV) devices in diverse e‐PV research subjects are summarized, as reported in peer‐reviewed articles in academic journals since August 2022. Updated graphs, tables, and analyses are provided with several performance parameters, such as power conversion efficiency, open‐circuit voltage, short‐circuit current density, fill factor, light utilization efficiency, and stability test energy yield. These parameters are presented as a function of the photovoltaic bandgap energy and the average visible transmittance for each technology and application, and are put into perspective using, for example, the detailed balance efficiency limit. The 4th installment of the "Emerging PV reports" discusses the "PV emergence" classification with respect to the "PV technology generations" and "PV research waves" and highlights the latest device performance progress in multijunction and flexible photovoltaics.
