Abstract

The International Muon Collider Collaboration (IMCC) [1] was established in 2020 following the recommendations of the European Strategy for Particle Physics (ESPP) and the implementation of the European Strategy for Particle Physics-Accelerator R&D Roadmap by the Laboratory Directors Group [2], hereinafter referred to as the the European LDG roadmap. The Muon Collider Study (MuC) covers the accelerator complex, detectors and physics for a future muon collider. In 2023, European Commission support was obtained for a design study of a muon collider (MuCol) [3]. This project started on 1st March 2023, with work-packages aligned with the overall muon collider studies. In preparation of and during the 2021-22 U.S. Snowmass process, the muon collider project parameters, technical studies and physics performance studies were performed and presented in great detail. Recently, the P5 panel [4] in the U.S. recommended a muon collider R&D, proposed to join the IMCC and envisages that the U.S. should prepare to host a muon collider, calling this their "muon shot". Abstract

We report on the design and characterization of an antiproton deceleration beamline, based on a pulsed drift tube, for the PUMA experiment at the Antimatter Factory at CERN. The design has been tailored to high-voltage (100 kV) and ultra-high vacuum (below $10^{-10}$ mbar) conditions. A first operation achieved decelerating antiprotons from an initial energy of 100 keV down to ($3898\pm 3$) eV, marking the initial stage in trapping antiprotons for the PUMA experiment. Employing a high-voltage ramping scheme, the pressure remains below $2\cdot 10^{-10}$ mbar upstream of the pulsed drift tube for 75% of the cycle time. The beamline reached a transmission of ($55 \pm 3$)% for antiprotons decelerated to 4 keV. The beam is focused on a position sensitive detector to a spot with horizontal and vertical standard deviations of ${\sigma}_\mathrm{horiz}$ = ($3.0 \pm 0.1$) mm and ${\sigma}_\mathrm{vert}$ = ($3.8 \pm 0.2$) mm, respectively. This spot size is within the acceptance of the PUMA Penning trap.

6. A basic electro-topological descriptor for the prediction of organic molecule geometries by simple machine learning

Abstract

This paper proposes a machine learning (ML) method to predict stable molecular geometries from their chemical composition. The method is useful for generating molecular conformations which may serve as initial geometries for saving time during expensive structure optimizations by quantum mechanical calculations of large molecules. Conformations are found by predicting the local arrangement around each atom in the molecule after trained from a database of previously optimized small molecules. It works by dividing each molecule in the database into minimal building blocks of different type. The algorithm is then trained to predict bond lengths and angles for each type of building block using an electro-topological fingerprint as descriptor. A conformation is then generated by joining the predicted blocks. Our model is able to give promising results for optimized molecular geometries from the basic knowledge of the chemical formula and connectivity. The method trends to reproduce interatomic distances within test blocks with RMSD under 0.05 Å

INTRODUCTION Vitamin D deficiency is highly prevalent worldwide (1,2) and increases the risk for several medical conditions, including osteoporosis, falls, cancer, diabetes, hypertension, autoimmune diseases so on. (3,4) This led [...], BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The superiority of cholecalciferol ([D.sub.3]) over ergocalciferol ([D.sub.2]) in sustaining serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D (25OHD) levels is controversial. To compare [D.sub.2] with [D.sub.3] we performed a single-blind, placebo-controlled randomized trial spanning 11 weeks. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Healthy volunteers (n = 33, aged 33.4 ± 6 years) were divided into three groups (n = 11, each): [D.sub.2], [D.sub.3] and placebo. Treatment started with a loading dose (100 000 IU) followed by 4800 IU/day (d) between d7 and d20 and follow- up until d77. Serum samples were obtained at baseline and at days 3, 7, 14, 21, 35, 49, 63 and 77. RESULTS: Baseline 25OHD values in the [D.sub.2] group were lower than those in the [D.sub.3] and placebo groups (P < 0.01). Placebo 25OHD levels never changed. As after the loading dose both [D.sub.2] and [D.sub.3] groups had reached similar 25OHD levels, we tested equivalence of the area under the concentration x time curve (AUC) between d7 and d77. The AUC was 28.6% higher for [D.sub.3] compared with [D.sub.2], and both were higher with respect to placebo. At d77, [D.sub.2] 25OHD levels were higher than those at baseline, but similar to placebo; both were lower than [D.sub.3] (P < 0.04). According to raw data, the elimination half-life of 25OHD was 84 and 111 days under [D.sub.2] and [D.sub.3] supplementation, respectively; after subtracting the placebo values, the corresponding figures were 33 and 82 days. CONCLUSIONS: [D.sub.2] and [D.sub.3] were equally effective in elevating 25OHD levels after a loading dose. In the long term, D3 seems more appropriate for sustaining 25OHD, which could be relevant for classic and non-classic effects of vitamin D. Abstract

Antiprotons as a probe to study short-lived isotopes remain unexploited despite past pioneering works with stable nuclei. In particular, low-energy antiprotons offer a very unique sensitivity to the neutron and proton densities at the annihilation site, i.e. in the tail of the nuclear density. Such studies with short-lived nuclei and low-energy antiprotons are the first motivation of the proposed antiProton Unstable Matter Annihilation (PUMA) experiment. Today, no facility provides a collider of low-energy radioactive ions and low-energy antiprotons: PUMA aims at transporting one billion antiprotons from CERN/ELENA to CERN/ISOLDE to perform the capture of low-energy antiprotons by short-lived nuclei, and probe in this way the so-far unexplored isospin composition of the nuclear-radial-density tail of radioactive nuclei.

Several experimental and first-principles studies are conducted to explain the 1D to 3D magnetic transformation taking place in the copper pyrazine dinitrate S = 1/2 antiferromagnetic crystal. The magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity curves of the crystal are shown to remain unchanged with the spin and magnetic chains.

Abstract

Electron cloud (EC) has already been observed during normal operation of the PS, therefore it is necessary to study its in fluence on any beam instability for the future LHC Injector Upgrade (LIU). Two new electron cloud detectors have been discussed, developed and installed during the Long Shutdown (LS1) in one of the PS main magnets. The first measurement method is based on current measurement by using a shielded button-type pick-up. Due to the geometry and space limitation in the PS magnet, the button-type pick-up made of a 96%Al2O3 block coated with a thin layer of solvent-based Ag painting, placed 30 degrees to the bottom part of the vacuum chamber was installed in the horizontal direction where the only opening of the magnet coil is. The other newly developed measurement method is based on detection of photons emitted by the electrons from the electron cloud impinging on the vacuum chamber walls. The emitted photons are reected to a quartz window. A MCP-PMT (Micro-Channel Plate Photomultiplier Tube) with high magnetic field/radiation resistance and fast response is attached outside the quartz window behind two UV lenses and one UV mirror and then counts the photons during the beam operation.

Abstract

In the absence of bioclimatic models, and given the scarcity of information about parameters and other input data, the panel data methodology was applied to establish the magnitude and direction of expected consequences in milk production, which is the main economic activity of Jimaguayú municipality. This study presents a summary about the theory of panel data models. Several specifications are evaluated, obtaining expressions of long-term elasticity of rainfall and temperature and its effect on milk production. Applied empirical models indicate that milk production in Jimaguayú could decrease by approximately 200 thousand L per year, due to the combined effect of the decrease in rainfall and the increase in temperature, with economic losses in the order of constant 100 thousand dollars informed in 2014. Abstract

En este trabajo, además de destacar la importancia de la aplicación del balance hidrológico seriado (BHS), se presenta numéricamente la ocurrencia de situaciones hídricas, su distribución y variabilidad para la zona de La Plata. El estudio fue realizado a partir de una serie continua de datos deprecipitación y temperatura mensual registrados en la Estación Experimental “Ing.Agr. Julio Hirschhorn” durante el período 1964-95. Los mismos se analizaron a través del método de cálculo del BHS propuesto por Pascale & Damario (1977), con el objetivo de conocer el régimen de agua en el suelo. Las situaciones hídricas probables se discuten frente a los requerimientos hídricos generales durante el ciclo fenológico de algunos cultivos de importancia económica. Asimismo, se analizan los resultados obtenidos de la aplicación del balance hidrológico climático mensual; detectando diferencias en las situaciones hídricas entre ambas metodologías que optimiza la aplicación del BHS para obtener información agrometeorológica de utilidad.
