The goal of this research was to provide a general assessment framework of students' statistical reasoning in medicine, then build three scales to assess students' statistical reasoning ability in solving practical medical problems, including Description, Interpretation and Prediction. On that basis, the study designed a set of tools to assess students' statistical reasoning ability in solving practical medical problems. Through the analysis of the students' performance, assessments of the students' statistical reasoning in medicine were done. These research results were suitable for student assessment in medical statistics courses, useful for faculty and students in teaching and learning medical statistics.

Background Staphylococcus aureus infections, including Methicillin-Resistant S. aureus (MRSA) and Methicillin-Sensitive S. aureus (MSSA), present significant challenges in healthcare due to rising antimicrobial resistance. This study evaluates the genetic basis of antibiotic resistance in S. aureus, focusing on key resistance-associated genes mecA and PVL. Methods A total of 568 clinical specimens were analyzed for the presence of S. aureus. Demographic data were collected to assess age-dependent prevalence. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was conducted to evaluate resistance patterns. The prevalence of the mecA and PVL genes was determined using molecular techniques. Results S. aureus was identified in 37.9% of cases, with the highest prevalence (60-79 age group). All S. aureus isolates showed 100% resistance to penicillin. Multidrug-resistant (MDR) strains accounted for 84.19% of isolates, with a significant presence of extensively drug-resistant (XDR) strains. The mecA gene was prevalent in 82.79% of MRSA isolates, indicating its strong association with methicillin resistance. Additionally, 41.86% of all S. aureus isolates were positive for the PVL gene, highlighting its widespread distribution. Conclusions The high prevalence of mecA and PVL genes in S. aureus strains underscores the challenges in managing these infections. These findings emphasize the necessity for judicious antibiotic use and enhanced collaborative efforts to combat antimicrobial resistance. Understanding the genetic basis of resistance can inform more effective diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive strategies, ultimately improving patient outcomes in S. aureus infections.

Background Coronary artery disease (CAD) and acute myocardial infarction (AMI) are substantial contributors to the global disease burden and mortality. The ANRIL gene polymorphism rs1333040 has been implicated in susceptibility to cardiovascular disease; however, its role in the Vietnamese population remains unclear. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted on 185 Vietnamese patients diagnosed with acute coronary syndrome (ACS), and clinical data, medical history, and biochemical parameters were recorded. ANRIL SNP rs1333040 was genotyped using PCR-RFLP. Genotype frequencies were assessed for Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium and their association with cardiovascular risk factors. Results The ‘Normal’ BMI (Body Mass Index) category was the largest segment, comprising 77.84% of the sample. Key cardiovascular risk factors identified among patients with AMI included hypertension (83.8%), dyslipidemia (80.0%), smoking (50.0%), and diabetes mellitus (33.8%). Clinical presentation showed that 55.0% of patients had non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) and 45.0% had ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). Lipid profile abnormalities were significant; 60.0% had decreased High-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol (HDL-C), 53.8% had elevated triglycerides, 37.5% had elevated Low-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol (LDL-C), and 36.3% had elevated total cholesterol levels. Genetic analysis focused on the rs1333040 polymorphism of the ANRIL gene, with the most common genotype being TT (58.8%), followed by CT (33.7%) and CC (7.5%). Allele frequencies were 75.6% for T and 24.4% for C. This study is the clinical implications of ANRIL polymorphisms in Vietnamese patients with CAD and AMI. Significant genotype-phenotype associations were observed, underscoring the importance of incorporating genetic screening for enhanced prognostic capabilities and personalized therapeutic decisions. Further research focused on delineating the precise genetic underpinnings of complex cardiovascular diseases in diverse populations is warranted.

Chronic wounds pose significant challenges in healthcare due to impaired healing mechanisms. Fibroblast cells play a crucial role in wound healing by orchestrating proliferation and migration. This study aimed to assess fibroblast cells derived from chronic wounds and explore the impact of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) on their growth and migration. Dermal samples from chronic pressure ulcers and diabetic ulcers were obtained from 20 patients at three sites. Fibroblasts from wound base, margins, and adjacent healing skin were isolated and characterized. Proliferation and migration capabilities of these cells were evaluated. LLLT was applied at various energy levels (2.5, 3, 3.5, 4, and 5 J/cm²) to assess its effect on cell count. Fibroblasts from chronic wounds exhibited slower proliferation and migration rates compared to normal dermal fibroblasts. Notably, LLLT intervention at different energy levels led to a significant increase in cell count, with the most pronounced effect observed at 3 J/cm². LLLT at an energy level of 3 J/cm² demonstrated a notable enhancement in fibroblast migration. These findings underscore the potential of LLLT as a therapeutic approach for chronic wounds, offering insights into its efficacy in augmenting fibroblast functions crucial for wound healing. Abstract Background Hyperactive coagulation might cause dangerous complications such as portal vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism after mesenchymal stem/stromal cell (MSC) therapy. Tissue factor (TF), an initiator of the extrinsic coagulation pathway, has been suggested as a predictor of this process. Methods The expression of TF and other pro- and anticoagulant genes was analyzed in xeno- and serum-free manufactured MSCs. Furthermore, culture factors affecting its expression in MSCs were investigated. Finally, coagulation tests of fibrinogen, D-dimer, aPPTs, PTs, and TTs were measured in patient serum after umbilical cord (UC)-MSC infusions to challenge a potential connection between TF expression and MSC-induced coagulant activity. Results Xeno- and serum-free cultured adipose tissue and UC-derived MSCs expressed the highest level of TF, followed by those from dental pulp, and the lowest expression was observed in MSCs of bone marrow origin. Environmental factors such as cell density, hypoxia, and inflammation impact TF expression, so in vitro analysis might fail to reflect their in vivo behaviors. MSCs also expressed heterogeneous levels of the coagulant factor COL1A1 and surface phosphatidylserine and anticoagulant factors TFPI and PTGIR. MSCs of diverse origins induced fibrin clots in healthy plasma that were partially suppressed by an anti-TF inhibitory monoclonal antibody. Furthermore, human umbilical vein endothelial cells exhibited coagulant activity in vitro despite their negative expression of TF and COL1A1. Patients receiving intravenous UC-MSC infusion exhibited a transient increase in D-dimer serum concentration, while this remained stable in the group with intrathecal infusion. There was no correlation between TF expression and D-dimer or other coagulation indicators. Conclusions The study suggests that TF cannot be used as a solid biomarker to predict MSC-induced hypercoagulation. Local administration, prophylactic intervention with anticoagulation drugs, and monitoring of coagulation indicators are useful to prevent thrombogenic events in patients receiving MSCs. Service provisioning is of paramount importance as we are now heading towards a world of integrated services giving rise to the next generation of service ecosystems. The huge number of service offerings that will be available to customers in future scenarios require a novel approach to service registry and discovery that allows customers to choose the offerings that best match their preferences. One way to achieve this is to introduce the provider’s reputation, i.e., a quality indicator of the provisioned service, as an additional search criterion. Now, with blockchain technology in our hands, automated regulation of service-level agreements (SLAs) that capture mutual agreements between all involved parties has regained momentum. In this article, we report on our full-fledged work on the conception, design, and construction of a platform for SLA-minded service provisioning called PenChain. With our work, we demonstrate that penalty-aware SLAs of general services–if represented in machine-readable logic and assisted by distributed ledger technology–are programmatically enforceable. We devise algorithms for ranking services in a search result taking into account the digitized values of the SLAs. We offer two scenario-based evaluations of PenChain in the field of precision agriculture and in the domain of automotive manufacturing. Furthermore, we examine the scalability and data security of PenChain for precision agriculture.

The main goal of this paper is to use the higher-order isogeometric analysis (IGA) to study the vibration behaviour of sandwich plates with an auxetic honeycomb core and two different functionally graded materials (FGM) skin layers (namely h-FGS plates) resting on an elastic foundation (EF) under double blast loading. Reddy's HSDT is used due to its simplicity and efficiency. The foundation model incorporates two parameters as springer stiffness (k1) and the shear layer stiffness (k2). The governing equation is derived from Hamilton's principle. After verifying the present approach, the effect of input parameters on the vibration characteristics of h-FGS plates is carried out in detail. The obtained results are expected to be useful for calculating and designing h-FGS plates in practice.

Deep learning has been studied in recent years to identify periapical lesions- a significant indicator of periapical periodontitis in radiographs. An accurate dataset is essential for constructing an efficient learning model for detecting periapical lesions. In order to achieve this goal, we gathered and created a database of panoramic radiographs containing periapical lesions from the High-quality Dental Treatment Centre, School of Dentistry, Hanoi Medical University, between January 2016 and March 2021. Out of 16,519 radiographs, three experienced dentists identified 3,926 images of periapical lesions and annotated those lesions based on the Periapical Lesions Classification. By applying well-known data processing techniques (e.g. scaling, mirroring, and flipping), the amount of data is increased to 17,004 images through generating additional images for machine learning. The dataset has three folders: one for the original photos, one for the post-augmentation images, and the rest for the annotation of periapical lesions. The information could assist researchers in developing a predictive machine model for detecting periapical lesions in radiographs.

This study provides evidence supporting the hypothesis that financial development reduces environmental pollution in developing countries. using an annual dataset of carbon emissions, financial development, and other factors from 1990 to 2020, with the GMM approach, We find that the more developed the financial system, the more advantageous it is for the environment. This conclusion is strengthened when particular facets of financial development are taken into account. Moreover, the impact is also influenced by the countries' wealth levels, in which countries with high average incomes have financial development that has an impact on reducing environmental pollution and the opposite result when viewed. considered in low-middle-income countries. Finally, we offer some policy recommendations regarding financial development to enhance its efficacy in maintaining environmental quality.

The development of highly efficient and stable visible-light-driven photocatalysts for the removal of herbicide 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) from water is still a challenge. In this work, Bi2MoO6 (BMO) materials with different morphology were successfully prepared via a simple hydrothermal method by altering the solvent. The morphology of the BMO material is mainly influenced by the solvent used in the synthesis (H2O, ethanol, and ethylene glycol or their mixtures) and to a lesser extent by subsequent thermal annealing. BMO with aggregated spheres and nanoplate-like structures hydrothermally synthesized in ethylene glycol (EG) and subsequently calcined at 400 °C (BMO-400 (EG)) showed the highest adsorption capacity and photocatalytic activity compared to other synthesized morphologies. Complete degradation of 2,4-D on BMO upon irradiation with a blue light-emitting diode (LED, λmax = 467 nm) was reached within 150 min, resulting in 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) as the main degradation product. Holes (h+) and superoxide radicals (⋅O2−) are assumed to be the reactive species observed for the rapid conversion of 2,4-D to 2,4-DCP. The addition of H2O2 to the reaction mixture not only accelerates the degradation of 2,4-DCP but also significantly reduces the total organic carbon (TOC) content, indicating that hydroxyl radicals are crucial for the rapid mineralization of 2,4-D. Under optimal conditions, the TOC value was reduced by 84.5% within 180 min using BMO-400 (EG) and H2O2. The improved degradation performance of BMO-400 (EG) can be attributed to its particular morphology leading to lower charge transfer resistance, higher electron–hole separation, and larger specific surface area.

Background: Sommeratia caseolaris is considered the most important mangrove species for reforestation and conservation programs. Therefore, the knowledge of genetic diversity and the population structure of the species has important implications both for the conservation of existing genetic resources and development programs. In the present study, the genetic diversity and structure population of eight populations of S. caseolaris from the Northern to the Southern Coast of Vietnam were determined using nine ISSR molecular markers. Results: Eight populations of the mangrove species Sonneratia caseolaris were sampled across the natural range in Vietnam to evaluate the genetic diversity of the species. Nine ISSR markers were used to analyse 30 individuals from each population. There were moderate to high levels of genetic diversity (I = 0.447; h = 0.300). PCoA analysis gave very similar results to UPGMA dendrogram construction with the eight populations clustered into three genetic groups which mostly aligned with geographical distances among them. AMOVA analysis results indicated that most (81 %) of the genetic variation was within populations. Conclusion: The current study also indicates the high level of genetic variation existing among and within the natural population of S. caseolaris in Vietnam. These results open new perspectives towards the conservation of the species' genetic resources and their future use in conservation and reforestation programs.

Canopy water content is a fundamental indicator for assessing the level of plant water stress. The correlation between changes in water content and the spectral reflectance of plant leaves at near-infrared (NIR) and short-wave infrared (SWIR) wavelengths forms the foundation for developing a new remote sensing index, the Infrared Canopy Dryness Index (ICDI), to monitor forest dryness that can be used to predict the consequences of water stress. This study introduces the index, that uses spectral reflectance analysis at near-infrared wavelengths, encapsulated by the Normalized Difference Infrared Index (NDII), in conjunction with specific canopy conditions as depicted by the widely recognized Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). Development of the ICDI commenced with the construction of an NDII/NDVI feature space, inspired by a conceptual trapezoid model. This feature space was then parameterized, and the spatial region indicative of water stress conditions, referred to as the dry edge, was identified based on the analysis of 10,000 random observations. The ICDI was produced from the combination of the vertical distance (i.e., under consistent NDVI conditions) from an examined observation to the dry edge. Comparisons between data from drought-affected and non-drought-affected control plots in the Australian Northern Jarrah Forest affirmed that the ICDI effectively depicted forest dryness. Moreover, the index was able to detect incipient water stress several months before damage from an extended drought and heatwave. Using freely available satellite data, the index has potential for broad application in monitoring the onset of forest dryness. This will require validation of the ICDI in diverse forest systems to quantify the efficacy of the index.

As a traditional medicinal plant in Vietnam, Myxopyrum smilacifolium has been used for a long history to treat cough, nervous disorders, numbness, rheumatism, and cephalalgia. Nevertheless, reports on the antioxidant activity and extraction of M. smilacifolium polysaccharides are still very rare. This study was designed to extract a high yield of polysaccharides from the M. smilacifolium trunk and characterize it. As a result, the maximum yield of the polysaccharides of 5.13 ± 0.05% was obtained with an extraction time of three hours, extraction temperature of 100 oC, the ratio of water to sample of 1:50 as extraction solution, extraction number of times 3, and the ratio of ethanol to extract volume 5:1 (v/v). Polysaccharides was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and high-performance gel-permeation chromatography (HPGPC). The average molecular weight of extracted polysaccharides was around 3.78 × 105 Da. In vitro assays dan impressive antioxidant activities of the extracted polysaccharides, containing 0.2423 ± 0.0028 mg GA/g or 0.2142 ± 0.0007 μmol AS/g. The IC50 values of polysaccharides in the DPPH and ABTS methods were 0.89 mg/mL and 3.85 mg/mL, respectively. These findings exhibited the potential for application or further research and development of polysaccharides from Myxopyrum smilacifolium.

This study investigated the chemical components and bioactivities of acetone leaf extracts of nine Annonaceae plants collected in the Binh Chau-Phuoc Buu Nature Reserve, Vietnam. A total of 182 constituents were identified, with linolenic acid, diaeudesmin, germacrene D, 1-octadecenoic acid, 8-(3-octyl-2-oxiranyl)-1-octanol, oleic acid, and phenylmethyl ester being the major compounds. The antimicrobial activity of the extracts was evaluated using a disc diffusion assay. Eight of the nine extracts, except for the Mitrephora thorelii extract, showed an inhibition effect against Bacillus cereus and Staphylococcus aureus. The antioxidant activity of the extracts was determined using DPPH assay, and the cytotoxic activity was deter mined using SRB assay. The results showed that the acetone extracts of Artabotrys hexapetalus, Uvularia grandiflora, Polyalthia luensis, Xylopia pierrei, Sphaerocoryne affinis, Desmos cochinchinensis, Uvaria littoralis, Mitrephora thorelii, and Goniothalamus touranensis had significant activity with IC50 for the DPPH radical scavenging activity ranging from 18.56 to 702.33 μg/mL, and the IC50 for the cytotoxic effects ranged from 5.39 to 251.77 μg/mL. Overall, the results obtained provide experimental evidence for the potential use of these plants in medicine and other related fields.

Introduction Age and lymph node ratio have been attributed as independent predictors for survival and recurrence in carcinoma of unknown primary (CUP).
