Abstract

Three-dimensional microextrusion bioprinting technology uses pneumatics, pistons, or screws to transfer and extrude bioinks containing biomaterials and cells to print biological tissues and organs. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis can simulate the flow characteristics of bioinks in a control volume, and the effect on cell viability can be predicted by calculating the physical quantities. In this study, we developed an analysis system to predict the effect of a screw-based dispenser system (SDS) on cell viability in bioinks through rheological and CFD analyses. Furthermore, carboxymethylcellulose/alginate-based bioinks were used for the empirical evaluation of high-viscous bioinks. The viscosity of bioinks was determined by rheological measurement, and the viscosity coefficient for the CFD analysis was derived from a correlation equation by non-linear regression analysis. The mass flow rate derived from the analysis was successfully validated by comparison with that from the empirical evaluation. Finally, the cell viability was confirmed after bioprinting with bioinks containing C2C12 cells, suggesting that the developed SDS may be suitable for application in the field of bioengineering. Consequently, the developed bioink analysis system is applicable to a wide range of systems and materials, contributing to time and cost savings in the bioengineering industry. 12. Optimizing surface treatment for Nb-doped SrTiO3substrates: effects on structural and chemical properties

Abstract

The use of SrTiO3substrates with either TiO2- or SrO-terminated surfaces is essential for growing high-quality epitaxial perovskite oxide thin films. Adding niobium to SrTiO3introduces novel functionalities and imparts alterations to the metallic and structural characteristics. This study thoroughly investigates the physical and chemical processes involved in the chemical etching and annealing processes. This is to achieve an atomically flat, single-terminated surface of (001)-oriented Nb-doped SrTiO3(Nb:STO) surfaces and to optimize their performance. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) identified the most optimal treatment regimen, pinpointing annealing at 950 °C for a duration of 6 h, coupled with a 90-s etching procedure, which achieves a well-defined step terrace structure of the substrate. Additionally, angle-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (AR-XPS) has revealed pronounced shifts in the predominant chemical component within the near-surface region due to changes in thermal parameters, even under consistent temperatures and durations. Reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED) further confirms the creation of a single-terminated surface with the specified annealing conditions. This research provides valuable insights into the surface treatment processes for Nb:STO substrates and their influence on substrates’ structural and chemical properties.
