A new trisazo dye has been synthesized by coupling the diazonium ion of 3-amino-4H thieno[3,4-c][1]benzopyran-4-one with 2- tert -butyl-4-methoxyphenol. The newly prepared trisazo dye was characterized by its physical, elemental, and spectroscopic data. 2D-NMR (COSY, HSQC, and HMBC) techniques were used to secure the structural assignments. The new trisazo dye (compound 7 ) along with precursors 3 , 4 , and 6 was screened by microdilution susceptibility assay for antibacterial and antifungal activities towards eight bacterial strains and three yeasts selected on the basis of their relevance as human pathogens. The results showed that compound 7 (MIC = 2-128  μ g/mL) was the most active as compared with its precursors. The most resistant microorganisms were V. cholerae NB2 and V. cholerae SG24, whereas the most sensitive microorganism was C. neoformans. The overall results of this study indicated that compound 7 had the greatest potential value against both yeasts and multidrug-resistant bacteria, so further investigation is warranted.

Background: A series of recently reported phenolic azo dyes 7a-e were prepared by coupling the thienyl diazonium sulfate of 3-Amino-4H-benzo[f]thieno[3,4-c](2H)chromen-4-one with selected diversely substituted phenolic and naphtholic derivatives. These compounds were evaluated for their antibacterial and antifungal activities. Furthermore their voltammetric behavior was compared at a glassy carbon electrode., Results: The voltammetric behavior of the five recently reported azo dyes has been compared at a glassy carbon electrode. It is shown that the azo dyes 7a-e with a hydroxyl group in the ortho position with respect to the azo bridge give rise to well defined, irreversible peaks for the oxidation and reduction process within a pH range of 2-7. The mechanisms of electrochemical oxidation of compound 7a-c and 7e are proposed. For the hydroxyl-substituted dyes, re-oxidation peaks were obtained in the subsequent scan. The antimicrobial activities of the reported compounds 7a-e along with the entire precursors 1-4 and 6a-e were performed against selected bacterial and fungal species and their activities compared to those of nystatin, griseofulvin and ciprofloxacin used as reference drugs., Conclusions: The present study showed significant antimicrobial activity of compounds 6d, 7a and 7c,e against the tested microorganisms; this result confirms the antimicrobial potency of azo compounds and some of their precursors.

Four new steroidal saponins (1-4) were isolated from the stem and bark of two species of Dracaena: deistelianosides A and B (1 and 2) from D. deisteliana and arboreasaponins A and B (3 and 4) from D. arborea. Six known saponins and one known sapogenin were also isolated. The structures of 1-4 were established as diosgenin 3-O-[3-O-sulfate-alpha-l-rhamnopyranosyl-(1-->4)]-beta-d-glucopyranoside (1), 1-O-beta-d-xylopyranosyl-(1-->2)-[alpha-l-rhamnopyranosyl-(1-->3)]-beta-d-fucopyranosyl(23S,24S)-spirosta-5,25(27)-diene-1beta,3beta,23alpha,24alpha-tetrol 24-O-alpha-l-arabinopyranoside (2), pennogenin-3-O-alpha-l-rhamnopyranosyl-(1-->2)-[alpha-l-rhamnopyranosyl-(1-->3)]-[6-O-acetyl]-beta-d-glucopyranoside (3), and 24alpha-hydroxypennogenin 3-O-alpha-l-rhamnopyranosyl-(1-->2)-[alpha-l-rhamnopyranosyl-(1-->3)]-beta-d-glucopyranoside (4) using extensive 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic analyses and mass spectrometry. Cytotoxic activity of several of these compounds was evaluated against the HT-29 and HCT 116 human colon cancer cell lines.

The new compounds guttiferone O ( 1) and 3-methoxycheffouxanthone ( 2) have been isolated from the seeds of Garcinia afzelii Engl., together with nine known compounds: 2-hydroxy-1,7-dimethoxyxanthone ( 3), smeathxanthone A ( 4), 1,5-dihydroxyxanthone ( 5), 1,6-dihydroxy-5-methoxyxanthone ( 6), cheffouxanthone ( 7), 1,3,5-trihydroxyxanthone ( 8), smeathxanthone B ( 9), isoxanthochymol ( 10) and guttiferone E ( 11). Their structures were elucidated by means of 1D and 2D-NMR techniques. All the isolates showed high cytotoxic activity and were found inactive when tested against HIV and influenza viruses., (Georg Thieme Verlag KG Stuttgart. New York.)

Five new triterpene saponins, arboreasides A-E (1-5), and two known saponins, ciwujianoside C(3) and 23-hydroxyursolic acid 28-O-alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1-->4)-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1-->6)-beta-D-glucopyranosyl ester, were isolated from the bark of Cussonia arborea. The structures were established using extensive 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic analyses and mass spectrometry.

Three xanthones, polyanxanthone A (1), B (2) and C (3) have been isolated from the methanol extract of the wood trunk of Garcinia polyantha, along with five known xanthones: 1,3,5-trihydroxyxanthone (4); 1,5-dihydroxyxanthone (5); 1,3,6,7-tetrahydroxyxanthone (6); 1,6-dihydroxy-5-methoxyxanthone (7) and 1,3,5,6-tetrahydroxyxanthone (8). Their structures were determined by means of 1D- and 2D-NMR techniques. Some of the above compounds were screened for their anticholinesterase activity on acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) enzymes.

The leaves of the Cameroonian medicinal plant Lophira alata afforded two new biflavonoids, lophirone L (1) and lophirone M (2), and the known luteolin and lithospermoside. Both biflavonoids were obtained in small quantities, and their structures show some new and unusual biflavonoid diversity.

From the root bark of Securidaca longepedunculata, a heptaoxygenated xanthone (1) has been isolated as well as two known xanthones (2) and (3) and two salicylic acid derivatives (4) and (5). The structure of 1 has been elucidated from 1H and 13C-NMR spectral data.

The dichloromethane-methanol (1/1) extract of the stem bark of Turraeanthus africanus (Meliaceae) showed remarkable antimicrobial activity against Cryptococcus neoformans, Staphylococcus aureus and methicillin-resistant S. aureus. Phytochemical investigation of this extract afforded six new diterpenoid derivatives, (+)-16-acetoxy-12,15-epoxylabda-8(17),12,14-triene ( 3), [16( E),12 S,15 R]-16-acetoxy-12,15-epoxy-15-isopropoxy- ent-labda-8(17),13(16)-diene (turraeanin A, 4), [16( E),12 R,15 S]-16-acetoxy-12,15-epoxy-15-isopropoxy- ent-labda-8(17),13(16)-diene (turraeanin B, 5), [16( E),12 S,15 R]-16-acetoxy-12,15-epoxy-15-methoxy- ent-labda-8(17),13(16)-diene (turraeanin C, 6), [16( E),12 R,15 S]-16-acetoxy-12,15-epoxy-15-methoxy- ent-labda-8(17),13(16)-diene (turraeanin D, 7) and (12 S,13 S,15 R)-12,15-epoxy-15-methoxy- ent-labd-8(17)-en-16-al (turraeanin E, 9) together with the known compounds, 15,16-epoxy- ent-labda-8(17),13(16),14-triene ( 1), (+)-pumiloxide ( 2), ent-labda-8(17),12 ( E)-diene-15,16-dial ( 8) and 16-acetoxy-12( R),15-epoxy-15beta-hydroxylabda-8(17),13 (16)-diene ( 10). Compound 10 was obtained as its acetoxy derivative ( 10a) and compound 11 was the product of hydrolysis of 6. Antimicrobial activity of the isolates was assayed and compounds 8, 9, 10a and 11 exhibited significant activities.

Two xanthones, bangangxanthone A (1) [1,5,8-trihydroxy-6'-methyl-6'-(4-methylpent-3-enyl)- pyrano[2',3':3,4]xanthone] and B (2) [1,4,8-trihydroxy-2-prenylxanthone], along with two known xanthones, 1,5-dihydroxyxanthone, 2-hydroxy-1,7-dimethoxyxanthone and the pentacyclic triterpenoids, friedelin, oleanolic acid and lupeol were isolated from the chloroform extract of the stem bark of Garcinia polyantha. The structures of these compounds were assigned by spectroscopic analysis. Compounds 1-4 showed antioxidant DPPH radical scavenging activities.

Investigation of the aerial parts of Ouratea sulcata led to the isolation of a biflavonoid named sulcatone A, together with the known compounds, 3-hydroxy-2,3-dihydroapigenyl-[I-4',O,II-3']-dihydrokaempferol, amentoflavone, lophirone A, agathisflavone, stigmasterol and stigmasteryl-3-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside. The structure of the compound was assigned as apigenyl-[I-4',O,II-3']-dihydrokaempferol, by means of spectroscopic analysis. Sulcatone A and 3-hydroxy-2,3-dihydroapigenyl-[I-4',O,II-3']-dihydrokaempferol exhibited significant in vitro antimicrobial activities against a range of microorganisms.

Two new xanthones, smeathxanthone A (1) (2-(3,7-dimethyl-2,6-octadienyl)-1,3,5,8-tetrahydroxyxanthone) and smeathxanthone B (2) (5,7,10-trihydroxy-2-methyl-2-(4-methylpent-3-enyl)[2H, 6H]pyrano[3,2-b]xanthen-6-one), have been isolated from the stem bark of Garcinia smeathmannii, and their structures elucidated on the basis of 1D and 2D NMR experiments. 1,3,5-Trihydroxyxanthone and 1,5-dihydroxyxanthone were also obtained. The compounds showed only modest activity against a range of bacteria and yeasts.

Phytochemical investigation of the stem bark extract of Boswellia papyrifera afforded two new stilbene glycosides, trans-4',5-dihydroxy-3-methoxystilbene-5-O-{alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1-->2)-[alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1-->6)]-beta-D-glucopyranoside (1), trans-4',5-dihydroxy-3-methoxystilbene-5-O-[alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1-->6)]-beta-D-glucopyranoside (2), and a new triterpene, 3alpha-acetoxy-27-hydroxylup-20(29)-en-24-oic acid (3), along with five known compounds, 11-keto-beta-boswellic acid (4), beta-elemonic acid (7), 3alpha-acetoxy-11-keto-beta-boswellic acid (8), beta-boswellic acid (9), and beta-sitosterol (10). The stilbene glycosides exhibited significant inhibition of phosphodiesterase I and xanthine oxidase. The triterpenes (3-9) exhibited prolyl endopeptidase inhibitory activities.

Two new lignans, (+)-4-(3-methylbutanoyl)-2,6-di(3,4-dimethoxy)phenyl-3,7-dioxabicyclo[3.3.0]octane and (+)-4-hydroxy-2,6-di(3,4-dimethoxy)phenyl-3,7-dioxabicyclo[3.3.0]octane, together with the known lupeol and sitosteryl beta-D-glucopyranoside, have been isolated from the roots of Echinops giganteus var. lelyi C. D. Adams (Compositae). The structures were elucidated on the basis of spectral studies and comparison with published data.

Two new triterpenoid saponins (1 and 2) were isolated from the stem bark of Cussonia bancoensis together with the known stigmasterol, ursolic acid, 23-hydroxyursolic acid (3), and 3beta-hydroxylup-20(29)-en-28-oic acid. On the basis of their spectroscopic data and on chemical transformations, the structures of the new saponins have been established as 3-O-(alpha-Ll-arabinopyranosyl)-23-hydroxyursolic acid (1) and 3-O-(beta-D-glucopyranosyl)-23-hydroxyursolic acid (2). In a nitric oxide (NO)-production bioassay, compound 3 exhibited significant NO inhibitory activity, while compounds 1 and 2 were less potent than 3.

Fractionation of the methanolic extract of Ochna afzelii stem bark has resulted in the isolation of two biflavonoids afzelones A and B along with five known flavonoids, calodenins A and B, afzelone C, 4',5-dimethoxy-6,7-methylenedioxyisoflavone, 4',5,7-trimethoxyisoflavone and the glucoside lanceoloside A. Their structures were determined using spectroscopic and chemical methods.

In a chemical investigation on the stem bark of Ouratea flava, two biflavonoids: 1-[3-(2,4-dihydroxy-benzoyl)-4,5,6-trihydroxy-2-(4-hydroxy-phenyl)-benzofuran-7-yl] -3-(4-hydroxy-phenyl) -propenone (flavumone A) and 3-(2,4-dihydroxy-benzoyl)-4-hydroxy-2,7-bis-(4-hydroxy-phenyl) -7,8- dihydro-furo[2,3-f]chromen-9-on (flavumone B) were isolated along with five known flavonoids. Their structures were established by various analyses including 2D-NMR spectroscopy.

Triterpenoids, ursolic acid (1) and 23-hydroxyursolic acid (2) were obtained from the hydrolysis of BuOH fraction of Cussonia bancoensis extract to test antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory effect of C. bancoensis (Araliaceae). Compound 1 and 2 exhibited anti-nociceptive effects, which were determined by acetic acid-induced writhing test and hot plate test. The effect of 2 was much more potent in acetic acid-induced writhing test than in hot plate test. Compound 1 and 2 significantly inhibited 1%-carrageenan-induced edema in the rat. These results suggest that the two triterpenes, ursolic acid and 23-hydroxyursolic acid, are responsible for the anti-nociceptive and anti-inflammatory effect of C. bancoesnsis.

Phytochemical investigations on the non-alkaloidal extracts of Mitragyna stipulosa bark has led to the isolation of a series of triterpenoids mainly consisting of quinovic acid ([structure: see text]) and its glycoside derivatives [structure: see text] and [structure: see text]. The other constituents isolated include alpha-amyrin, 3beta-acetyl ursolic acid and a mixture of oleanolic and ursolic acid and beta-sitosterol glucopyranoside. Their structures were identified by spectral and chemical studies and compounds [structure: see text] and [structure: see text] were, respectively, identified as quinovic acid 3-O-[beta-D-glucopyranoside] (quinovin glycoside C) and quinovic acid 3-O-[beta-D-quinovopyranoside]-27-O-[beta-D-glucopyranosyl] ester. Compounds [structure: see text] and [structure: see text] showed significant inhibitory activity against snake venom phosphodiesterase I.

Chromatographic separation of the stem bark extract of Mitragyna stipulosa afforded triterpene derivatives ursolic acid (1), quinovic acid (2), quinivic acid 3-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (3, quinovin glycoside C), quinovic acid 3-O-[(2-O-sulfo)-beta-D-quinovopyranoside] (4, zygophyloside D) and quinovic acid 3-O-beta-D-quinovopyranosyl-27-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl ester (5, zygophyloside B). These five compounds were subjected to the cytotoxicity on MTT assay system. Compound 1 among tested showed the most potent cytotoxicity. Quinovic acid showed less potent cytotoxicity than ursolic acid and sugar linkages to 2 decreased the cytotoxicity. Compound 4 more potent than 3 with indicate that the sulfonyl group significantly enhances the activity. This indicates that the glycosidic linkage in ursane-type triterpenoids has mainly negative effect on cytotoxicity unlike in oleanane-type glycosides.

Phytochemical investigation of the dichloromethane extract of Ochna calodendron leaves resulted in the isolation and identification of three known isoflavones, irilone, 3'-methoxyirilone and prunetin, one cyanoglucoside, menisdaurin, in addition to two new triflavonoid constituents, namely caloflavans A and B. The structures of the new compounds were established by spectroscopic methods (EI-MS, FAB-MS, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, HMBC and HMQC).

Two new fatty acid glucosides, (3E,8Z)-8-carboxy-1-(O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl)-2,6-dihydroxytritriaconta-3,8-diene (1) and (8Z)-8-carboxy-1-(O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl)-3,4-epoxy-2,6-dihydroxytritriacont-8-ene (2), have been isolated from the root bark of Ochna calodendron and their structures elucidated by extensive two-dimensional NMR methods including HMQC, HMBC and NOESY experiments.

Two known 7,8-dihydrobenzofuranones, aquilegiolide (1) and menisdaurilide (2), were isolated from Ouratea reticulata root bark.

Bioassay-guided isolation of two new compounds, 3,4-methylenedioxy-3'-O-methyl-4'-O-glucoside ellagic acid (1) and the pteleoellagic acid derivative (2), from the stem bark of Pteleopsis hylodendron is reported along with 3,4-methylenedioxy-3'-O-methyl ellagic acid (3), 3,3'-di-O-methyl ellagic acid (4) and 3,3',4'-tri-O-methyl ellagic acid (5), which were obtained for the first time from this plant. The structures of these compounds were elucidated with the help of spectroscopic studies. Compounds 1 and 4 were found to have significant antioxidant activity, while compounds 1-4 showed antibacterial activity against different pathogenic bacteria.

The stem bark of Ochna afzelii furnished three biflavonoids among which two are new. Their structures were established from spectroscopic and chemical evidences.

A new sesquiterpene lactone, drypemolundein A and a new friedelane derivative, drypemolundein B, along with seven known compounds have been isolated from the whole stems of Drypetes molunduana Pax and Hoffm. Their structures were established on the basis of one- and two-dimensional NMR, homo- and hetero-nuclear spectroscopic evidence.

Two new isoflavones, pentandrin (1) and pentandrin glucoside (2), were isolated from the stem barks of Ceiba pentandra along with beta-sitosterol and its 3-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside, which was isolated for the first time from this plant. The structures of these compounds were elucidated with the help of spectroscopic techniques, while the structure of 1 was unambiguously confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies.

A new benzoylglucoside, lanceoloside A (1), and a new prenylated isoflavone, lanceolone (2), have been isolated from the air-dried leaves of Lophira lanceolata. Both structures were established from spectroscopic and chemical evidence.

Two new isoflavones, named conrauinones A (1) and B (2), have been isolated from the stem bark of Millettia conraui, in addition to known 5-methoxydurmillone. The structures of the new compounds were determined by spectroscopic analysis including 2D NMR techniques as 5,6,2'-trimethoxy-4',5'-(methylenedioxy)-2",2"-dimethylpyrano[5",6":7,8]isoflavone (1) and 6-methoxy-3',4'-(methylenedioxy)-7-O-[(E)-3",7"-dimethyl-7"-ol-2",5"-octadienyl]isoflavone (2).

Six pentacyclic triterpenic acid methyl esters have been isolated from the methylated ethyl acetate extract of the trunk wood of MUSANGA CECROPIOIDES, as well as a triterpene saponin of the same group. One of them, cecropic acid methyl ester, is new. The structures of these compounds have been established from interpretation of spectral data or chemical transformations. The known triterpenes include euscaphic and tormentic acid methyl esters, already isolated from the root wood of the plant, methyl cecropiaceate, and methyl pomolate, already obtained from the stem bark, and methyl arjunolate and beta- D-glucosyl tormentate, encounted in this plant for the first time.

Studies of the methylated ethyl acetate extract of the trunk wood of MYRIANTHUS ARBOREUS (Cec-ropiaceae) have resulted in the isolation of five known pentacyclic triterpenes and a new lignan cinnamate. The structural elucidation of the new compound has been effected on grounds of the interpretation of spectroscopic data and alkaline hydrolysis.

Two new chromone glycosides, schumanniofiosides A and B have been isolated from the root bark of Schumanniophyton magnificum and their structures shown to be 2-methyl-5,7-dihydroxychromone 5-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside and 2-methyl-5,7-dihydroxychromone 7-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1----2)-apiofuranoside, respectively. The structures were elucidated by a combination of spectral data and chemical degradation.

The stem bark of Teclea ouabanguiensis has yielded six triterpenoids, two of which are new. The known compounds were identified spectroscopically as 7-deacetylazadirone (2), 7-deacetylproceranone (3), tecleanin, (4), and lupeol. The novel compounds include the tetranortriterpenoids, 7-deacetoxy-7-oxoazadirone (1), and ouabanginone (5). The biogenetic significance of the presence of these limonoids in T. ouabanguienis is discussed.

Root bark extracts of ZANTHOXYLUM TESSMANNII (Engl.) Ayafor COMB. NOV. (Syn. FAGARA TESSMANNII Engl.) yielded, besides chelerythrine, dihydrochelerythrine, fagaramide and lupeol previously reported from this taxon, ten other compounds viz:nitidine, dihydronitidine, 9-methoxychelerthrine, gamma-fagarine, skimmianine, arctigenin methylether, savinin and a mixture of campesterol, beta-sitosterol and stigmasterol. The implications of the present results for the taxonomic position of ZANTHOXYLUM TESSMANNII is discussed.
