5. Synthesis and performance of plant-based ionic liquids in water-based drilling fluids.

Abstract

In this paper, the ionic liquids Met-1, Met-2, Asp-1 and Asp-2 were prepared by acid-base neutralization reactions with different molar ratios of amino acids (methionine and aspartic acid) and concentrated sulfuric acid as raw materials. Four ionic liquids were formulated into different concentrations of inhibitors, and their hydration inhibition and inhibition mechanism were investigated by anti-expansion experiment, linear swelling experiment and flocculation experiment. The results showed that when the molar ratio of aspartic acid to concentrated sulfuric acid was 1:1.5, which was named Asp-2, and the concentration of Asp-2 was 1.0%, the inhibitor achieved the best hydration inhibition performance on clay with 91.95% anti-swelling rate and 21.37% linear swelling rate. Infrared spectra (FT-IR) analysis, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and laser particle size analysis were used to investigate the inhibition mechanism of Asp-2. The results showed that the average particle size of the hydrated soil samples increased by 0.282 μm and the median particle size increased by 2.101 μm after the addition of Asp-2 inhibitor, indicating that Asp-2 inhibitor played a good inhibitory role in the drilling fluid. Abstract

Climate change has significantly increased the frequency and intensity of drought events in recent decades, which may affect the decomposition of organic matter such as deadwood. Previous studies have examined the impacts of microclimate and wood traits on deadwood decomposition, but how wood microbes regulate effects of drought intensity on deadwood decomposition remains unclear. In this study, a field drought experiment was conducted with three throughfall exclusion levels (i.e., control, −35% and −70% rainfall treatments) in a subtropical forest to probe relative importance of microclimate, wood traits, and microbial biomass on wood decomposition. Our results showed that the −35% and −70% rainfall treatments significantly decreased wood CO2 efflux by 28.27% and 47.49%, respectively. Drought-induced decreases in wood CO2 efflux were mainly mediated by wood microbial biomass, particularly wood fungi biomass. The structural equation modelling indicated a shift in the dominant wood microbial communities in regulating wood CO2 efflux from bacteria to fungi as drought intensities increased. Our findings highlight the crucial role of wood microbial community with the trade-off between fungi and bacteria on deadwood decomposition under drought, which should be taken into account to decode forest carbon cycle − climate feedback in the future research.

20. Synthesis and mechanism study of an environmentally friendly filtrate reducing agent from humic acid and organic silicon.

Abstract

In this study, organic silicon was introduced to humic acid for the first time, and set the novel polymer NaHm/AMPS/AM/TSP‐L12 (HASSi) as an environmentally friendly filtrate reducing agent, which was developed by using silica modified material (TSP‐L12), sodium humic acid (NaHm), 2‐acrylamido‐2‐methylpropanesulfonic acid sodium (AMPS), and acrylamide (AM) as raw materials. The molecular structure, chemical composition of HASSi has been investigated and results show that HASSi shows the chemical structure was conformed to the molecular design. Differential scanning calorimetry–thermogravimetric analysis results illustrate that thermal decomposition temperature of HASSi under nitrogen was 250°C. Though temperature resistance evaluations, HASSi could withstand temperature up to 230°C. Salt and calcium resistance evaluations confirmed its resistance of NaCl could reach up to 5% and CaCl2 to 0.5%. The filtrate reduce mechanism of HASSi was investigated through various methods, including scanning electron microscope analysis of HASSi aqueous solution, microstructure of filter cake, measurements of zeta potential, and particle size distribution, results showed that HASSi participation in the formation of mud cakes and illustrated an excellent filtration reduction effect. In addition, HASSi was identified as an environmentally friendly filter loss reducing agent through environmental performance evaluation, which shows a great application prospect in oilfield. 25. Three-Dimensional Visualization of Oxygen-Vacancy Migration and Redistribution in Ca-Substituted BiFeO3

Abstract

Ionic movement has received renewed attention in recent years, particularly in the field of ferroelectric oxides, since it is intrinsically linked to chemical reaction kinetics and ferroelectric phase stability. The associated surface electrochemical processes coupled local ionic transport with an applied electric bias, exhibiting very high ionic mobility at room temperature based on a simple electrostatics scenario. However, few studies have focused on the applied-polarity dependence of ionic migration with directly visualized maps. Here, we use incorporated experiments of conductive scanning probe microscopy and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry to investigate oxygen ionic migration and cation redistribution in ionic oxides. The local concentrations of oxygen vacancies and other cation species are visualized by three-dimensional mappings, indicating that oxygen vacancies tend to be ejected toward the surface. An accumulation of oxygen vacancies and ionic redistribution strongly depend on tip polarity, thus corroborating their role in the electrochemical process. This work illustrates the interplay between ionic kinetics and electric switching.

Abstract

Recently the hybrid multi-port DC circuit breaker (MP-DCCB) is becoming popular in protecting HVDC grids, thanks to their re-duction of power electronics devices. In this paper, an enhanced multi-port current-limiting DCCB (MP-CLCB) for multiple line protection is proposed. The integrated fault current limiter (FCL) inside the MP-CLCB can clear the fault faster with slightly in-creased costs. To reduce the energy dissipation requirement for the surge arresters caused by the newly added current-limiting path, an energy transfer path which provides a loop with the in-ductors during the current decay stage is designed. The theoreti-cal analysis of the pre-charging, current-limiting, fault interrup-tion and energy dissipation of the MP-CLCB is carried out. Moreover, the design principles of the energy dissipation and the key parameters of the MP-CLCB are provided. The proposed approaches are verified through simulations in PSCAD/EMTDC. The results show that the MP-CLCB can replace multiple DCCBs, accelerate the fault current interruption and reduce the energy dissipation requirement for the surge arresters.

Abstract

Rare-earth iron garnet thin films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) have recently attracted a great deal of attention for spintronic applications. Thulium iron garnet (TmIG) has been successfully grown and TmIG/Pt heterostructures have been characterized. However, TmIG is not the only rare-earth iron garnet that can be grown with PMA. We report the growth, magnetic, and spintronic properties of epitaxial terbium iron garnet (TbIG) and europium iron garnet (EuIG) thin films with PMA. Reciprocal space mapping shows the films are lattice matched to the substrate without strain relaxation, even for films up to 56 nm thick. The lattice strain and magnetostriction coefficient produce PMA in certain cases. TbIG grows on (111) gadolinium gallium garnet (GGG) with PMA due to the in-plane compressive strain, whereas TbIG on (111) substituted GGG (SGGG) is in tension and has an in-plane easy axis. EuIG grows with PMA on (100) and (111) GGG substrates, which facilitates the investigation of spintronic properties as a function of orientation. Both garnets have excess rare earth, which is believed to occupy Fe octahedral sites and in the case of TbIG is associated with an increase in the compensation temperature to 330 K, higher than the bulk value. Anomalous Hall effect (AHE) measurements of Pt/EuIG Hall crosses show that the spin mixing conductance of Pt/ (111) and (100) EuIG is similar. AHE measurements of Pt/TbIG Hall crosses reveal a sign change in the AHE amplitude at the compensation point analogous to all-metallic systems., National Science Foundation (U.S.) (Grant 1122374)

46. Origin of the Ultrafast Response of the Lateral Photovoltaic Effect in Amorphous MoS 2 /Si Junctions.

Abstract

The lateral photovoltaic (LPV) effect has attracted much attention for a long time because of its application in position-sensitive detectors (PSD). Here, we report the ultrafast response of the LPV in amorphous MoS 2 /Si (a-MoS 2 /Si) junctions prepared by the pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique. Different orientations of the built-in field and the breakover voltages are observed for a-MoS 2 films deposited on p- and n-type Si wafers, resulting in the induction of positive and negative voltages in the a-MoS 2 /n-Si and a-MoS 2 /p-Si junctions upon laser illumination, respectively. The dependence of the LPV on the position of the illumination shows very high sensitivity (183 mV mm -1 ) and good linearity. The optical relaxation time of LPV with a positive voltage was about 5.8 μs in a-MoS 2 /n-Si junction, whereas the optical relaxation time of LPV with a negative voltage was about 2.1 μs in a-MoS 2 /p-Si junction. Our results clearly suggested that the inversion layer at the a-MoS 2 /Si interface made a good contribution to the ultrafast response of the LPV in a-MoS 2 /Si junctions. The large positional sensitivity and ultrafast relaxation of LPV may promise the a-MoS 2 /Si junction's applications in fast position-sensitive detectors.

47. Near-ultraviolet lateral photovoltaic effect in Fe 3 O 4 /3C-SiC Schottky junctions.

Abstract

In this paper, we report a sensitive lateral photovoltaic effect (LPE) in Fe 3 O 4 /3C-SiC Schottky junctions with a fast relaxation time at near-ultraviolet wavelengths. The rectifying behavior suggests that the large build-in electric field was formed in the Schottky junctions. This device has excellent position sensitivity as high as 67.8 mV mm -1 illuminated by a 405 nm laser. The optical relaxation time of the LPE is about 30 μs. The fast relaxation and high positional sensitivity of the LPE make the Fe 3 O 4 /3C-SiC junction a promising candidate for a wide range of ultraviolet/near-ultraviolet optoelectronic applications.
