6. Effect of Bushing Structure on Mechanical Properties and Failure Mechanism of CFRP Laminated Titanium Nail Riveting.

Abstract

In the aerospace field, the riveting process is one of the main methods for connecting the Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer/Plastic (CFRP). During the riveting process, components are prone to problems such as damage to CFRP hole walls and reduction in joint strength. To this end, this paper proposes two new bushing structures based on riveting. The riveting damage behavior and mechanical properties of composite materials under three riveting methods: non-bushing, non-boss bushing, and boss bushing were compared. Furthermore, the tensile and hysteretic mechanical properties of CFRP under different riveting structures were studied. The results show that the stress distribution around the hole is more uniform than that of the non-bushing riveting method, and the delamination damage at the hole wall is significantly reduced. In the tensile test, the maximum tensile loads of the non-boss bushing and the boss bushing increased by 2.49% and 5.03% compared to the non-boss bushing schemes. In addition, the tensile failure modes of the three schemes also showed different failure modes due to different riveting forms. The failure mode of the non-bushing riveting scheme is rivet shear failure, and the failure mode of the bushing riveting scheme is rivet pull-off failure. In the hysteretic test, the maximum tensile loads of the non-boss bushing and the boss bushing increased by 5.49% and 12.03% compared to the non-bushing scheme. The failure mode of the three schemes is rivet pull-off failure. The bushing structure not only enhances the connection strength, but also improves the damage to the CFRP hole wall. Abstract

In recent years, graphene has become the most popular conductive filler in conductive polymers which can be used in many practical applications. A proper selection of the mixing method is the decisive factor to maximize the excellent conductivity of graphene in a polymer matrix. In this work, ultrasound-assisted supercritical CO2 (scCO2) method was used for the first time to prepare graphene infiltrated conductive natural rubber (NR). Many interesting phenomena were discovered. First, it was found that NR was fully swollen after an ultrasound-assisted scCO2 penetration and a following rapid decompression process. The degree of expansion of NR in scCO2 was even larger than in toluene. Secondly, ultrasound-assisted scCO2 method coupled with a rapid decompression process successfully inserted graphene particles in the swollen NR to prepare conductive NR/graphene materials. The impacts of the decompression method, vulcanization degree, and ultrasonication duration on graphene infusion were studied and analyzed. Under an optimal condition, the surface conductivity of as-prepared unvulcanized graphene/NR film or vulcanized film with a low graphene loading fraction (0.34 vol%) could reach to 0.2 S/m or 0.02 S/m, respectively, taking a leading position in the reported graphene/NR composites. Our conductive NR was shown to be satisfactory as a strain sensor for the measurement of fine movements of human body such as heartbeat, finger bending, and vocalization. Since only scCO2, one of the most environmentally benign solvents, was used in the whole process, this routine is not only efficient but also environmentally friendly. We believe this method is versatile and can be applied to many other polymers that can be swollen in scCO2.

17. In situinjectable hydrogel encapsulating Mn/NO-based immune nano-activator for prevention of postoperative tumor recurrence

Abstract

Postoperative tumor recurrence remains a predominant cause of treatment failure. In this study, we developed an in situinjectable hydrogel, termed MPB-NO@DOX + ATRA gel, which was locally formed within the tumor resection cavity. The MPB-NO@DOX + ATRA gel was fabricated by mixing a thrombin solution, a fibrinogen solution containing all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA), and a Mn/NO-based immune nano-activator termed MPB-NO@DOX. ATRA promoted the differentiation of cancer stem cells, inhibited cancer cell migration, and affected the polarization of tumor-associated macrophages. The outer MnO2shell disintegrated due to its reaction with glutathione and hydrogen peroxide in the cytoplasm to release Mn2+and produce O2, resulting in the release of doxorubicin (DOX). The released DOX entered the nucleus and destroyed DNA, and the fragmented DNA cooperated with Mn2+to activate the cGAS-STING pathway and stimulate an anti-tumor immune response. In addition, when MPB-NO@DOX was exposed to 808 nm laser irradiation, the Fe-NO bond was broken to release NO, which downregulated the expression of PD-L1 on the surface of tumor cells and reversed the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment. In conclusion, the MPB-NO@DOX + ATRA gel exhibited excellent anti-tumor efficacy. The results of this study demonstrated the great potential of in situinjectable hydrogels in preventing postoperative tumor recurrence.

19. Mussel-Inspired Chemical Modification of Cotton Fabrics for Oil/Water Separation

Abstract

A hydrophobic and lipophilic cotton fabric based on mussel-inspired chemistry was developed to improve surface durability. The surface morphology and wettability of the modified fabrics were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric/differential thermal analysis, and contact angle measurement. The water contact angle and surface wettability analysis showed that the modified cotton fabric had a water contact angle of 154.9°, and the modified cotton fabric could be driven by gravity to separate the mixture of oil and water and had good separation efficiency for different types of oil and water mixtures, which was equal to or greater than 97% on average. In addition, the oil/water separation flux could be controlled by adjusting the pore size of the modified fabric.
