To date, various formation channels of merging events have been heavily explored with the detection of nearly 100 double black hole (BH) merger events reported by the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA (LVK) Collaboration. We here systematically investigate an alternative formation scenario, i.e., binary BHs (BBHs) formed through double helium stars (hereafter double-core evolution channel). In this scenario, the two helium stars (He-rich stars) could be the outcome of the classical isolated binary evolution scenario involving with and without common-envelope phase (i.e., CE channel and stable mass transfer channel), or alternatively of massive close binaries evolving chemically homogeneously (i.e., CHE channel). We perform detailed stellar structure and binary evolution calculations that take into account internal differential rotation and mass loss of He-rich stars, as well as tidal interactions in binaries. For double He-rich stars with equal masses in binaries, we find that tides start to be at work on the Zero Age Helium Main Sequence (ZAHeMS: the time when a He-rich star starts to burn helium in the core, which is analogous to ZAMS for core hydrogen burning) for initial orbital periods not longer than 1.0 day, depending on the initial metallicities. Besides the stellar mass loss rate and tidal interactions in binaries, we find that the role of the angular momentum transport efficiency in determining the resulting BH spins, becomes stronger when considering BH progenitors originated from a higher metal-metallicity environment. Sigma Ori E, a massive helium B-type star, shows a high surface rotation and a strong surface magnetic field potentially challenging the process of wind magnetic braking. The Gaia satellite provides an accurate distance to that star and confirms its membership to the sigma Ori cluster. We account for these two key pieces of information to investigate whether single star models can reproduce the observed properties of sigma Ori E and provide new estimates for its metallicity, mass, and age. We compute rotating stellar models accounting for wind magnetic braking and magnetic quenching of the mass loss. We obtain that sigma Ori E is a very young star (age less than 1 Myr) with an initial mass around 9 Msol, a surface equatorial magnetic field around 7 kG and having a metallicity Z (mass fraction of heavy elements) around 0.020. No solution is obtained with the present models for a metallicity Z=0.014. The initial rotation of the models fitting sigma Ori E is not much constrained and can be anywhere in the range studied in the present work. Because of its very young age, models predict no observable changes of the surface abundances due to rotational mixing. The simultaneous high surface rotation and high surface magnetic field of sigma Ori E may simply be a consequence of its young age. This young age implies that the processes responsible for producing the chemical inhomogeneities that are observed at its surface should be rapid. Thus for explaining the properties of sigma Ori E, there is no necessity to invoke a merging event although such a scenario cannot be discarded. Other stars (HR 5907, HR 7355, HR 345439, HD 2347, CPD -50^{o}3509$) showing similar properties as sigma Ori E (fast rotation and strong surface magnetic field) may also be very young stars, although determination of the braking timescales is needed to confirm such a conclusion., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, paper accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

We study the performance of permanent states (the bosonic counterpart of the Slater determinant state) as approximating functions for bosons, with the intention to develop variational methods based upon them. For a system of $N$ identical bosons, a permanent state is constructed by taking a set of $N$ arbitrary (not necessarily orthonormal) single-particle orbitals, forming their product and then symmetrizing it. It is found that for the one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model with the periodic boundary condition and at unit filling, the exact ground state can be very well approximated by a permanent state, in that the permanent state has high overlap (at least 0.96 even for 12 particles and 12 sites) with the exact ground state and can reproduce both the ground state energy and the single-particle correlators to high precision. For a generic model, we have devised a greedy algorithm to find the optimal set of single-particle orbitals to minimize the variational energy or maximize the overlap with a target state. It turns out that quite often the ground state of a bosonic system can be well approximated by a permanent state by all the criterions of energy, overlap, and correlation functions. And even if the error is apparent, it can often be remedied by including more configurations, i.e., by allowing the variational wave function to be a combination of multiple permanent states. The algorithm is used to study the stability of a two-particle system, with great success. All these suggest that permanent states are very effective as variational wave functions for bosonic systems, and hence deserve further studies., Comment: 28 pages, 25 figures. Comments are welcome

Various binary black hole formation channels have been proposed since the first gravitational event GW150914 was discovered by the Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (AdLIGO). For all evolutionary channels based on the evolution of isolated binaries, the immediate progenitor of the binary black hole is a close binary system composed of a black hole and a helium star. We perform detailed binary evolution and systematically explore the parameter space of initial binary properties, including initial black hole and helium star masses, initial rotation of the helium star as well as metallicity. We argue that the spin of the first-born black hole at its birth is negligible ($\lesssim 0.1$), hence the second-born black hole's spin dominates the measured effective spin, $\chi_{\rm eff}$, from gravitational wave events of double black hole mergers. We find that tides can be important only when orbital periods are shorter than 2 days. Upon core collapse, the helium star produces a black hole (the second-born black hole in the system) with a spin that can span the entire range from zero to maximally spinning. We show that the bimodal distribution of the spin of the second-born black hole obtained in recent papers is mainly due to oversimplifying assumptions. We find an anti-correlation between the merging timescale of the two black holes, T$_{\rm merger}$, and the effective spin $\chi_{\rm eff}$. Finally, we provide new prescriptions for the tidal coefficient E$_2$ for both H-rich and the helium-rich stars. We predict that, with future improvements to AdLIGO's sensitivity, the sample of merging binary black hole systems will show an overdensity of sources with positive but small $\chi_{\rm eff}$. originating from lower mass black hole mergers born at low redshift., Comment: 20 pages, 15 figures; submitted to A&A

Massive stars with solar metallicity lose important amounts of rotational angular momentum through their winds. When a magnetic field is present at the surface of a star, efficient angular momentum losses can still be achieved even when the mass-loss rate is very modest, at lower metallicities, or for lower-initial-mass stars. In a close binary system, the effect of wind magnetic braking also interacts with the influence of tides, resulting in a complex evolution of rotation. We study the interactions between the process of wind magnetic braking and tides in close binary systems. We discuss the evolution of a 10 M$_\odot$ star in a close binary system with a 7 M$_\odot$ companion using the Geneva stellar evolution code. The initial orbital period is 1.2 days. The 10 M$_\odot$ star has a surface magnetic field of 1 kG. Various initial rotations are considered. We use two different approaches for the internal angular momentum transport. In one of them, angular momentum is transported by shear and meridional currents. In the other, a strong internal magnetic field imposes nearly perfect solid-body rotation. The evolution of the primary is computed until the first mass-transfer episode occurs. The cases of different values for the magnetic fields and for various orbital periods and mass ratios are briefly discussed. We show that, independently of the initial rotation rate of the primary and the efficiency of the internal angular momentum transport, the surface rotation of the primary will converge, in a time that is short with respect to the main-sequence lifetime, towards a slowly evolving velocity that is different from the synchronization velocity. Key physical ingredients governing the evolution of massive stars are mass losses, convection and mixing in radiative zones. These effects are important both in the frame of single and close binary evolution. We investigate the impact of tidal interactions, before any mass transfer, on various properties of the stellar models. We study the conditions for obtaining homogeneous evolution triggered by tidal interactions, and for avoiding any Roche lobe overflow during the Main-Sequence phase. We consider the case of rotating stars computed with a strong coupling mediated by an interior magnetic field. In models without any tidal interaction (single stars and wide binaries), homogeneous evolution in solid body rotating models is obtained when two conditions are realized: the initial rotation must be high enough, the loss of angular momentum by stellar winds should be modest. This last point favors metal-poor fast rotating stars. In models with tidal interactions, homogeneous evolution is obtained when rotation imposed by synchronization is high enough (typically a time-averaged surface velocities during the Main-Sequence phase above 250 km s$^{-1}$), whatever the mass losses. In close binaries, mixing is stronger at higher than at lower metallicities. Homogeneous evolution is thus favored at higher metallicities. Roche lobe overflow avoidance is favored at lower metallicities due to the fact that stars with less metals remain more compact. We study also the impact of different processes for the angular momentum transport on the surface abundances and velocities in single and close binaries. In models where strong internal coupling is assumed, strong surface enrichments are always associated to high surface velocities in binary or single star models. In contrast, models computed with mild coupling may produce strong surface enrichments associated to low surface velocities. Close binary models may be of interest for explaining homogeneous massive stars, fast rotating Wolf-Rayet stars, and progenitors of long soft gamma ray bursts, even at high metallicities., Comment: 21 pages, 13 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

We study how tides in a binary system induce some specific internal shear mixing, able to substantially modify the evolution of close binaries prior to mass transfer. We construct numerical models accounting for tidal interactions, meridional circulation, transport of angular momentum, shears and horizontal turbulence and consider a variety of orbital periods and initial rotation velocities. Depending on orbital periods and rotation velocities, tidal effects may spin down (spin down Case) or spin up (spin up Case) the axial rotation. In both cases, tides may induce a large internal differential rotation. The resulting tidally induced shear mixing (TISM) is so efficient that the internal distributions of angular velocity and chemical elements are greatly influenced. The evolutionary tracks are modified, and in both cases of spin down and spin up, large amounts of nitrogen can be transported to the stellar surfaces before any binary mass transfer. Meridional circulation, when properly treated as an advection, always tends to counteract the tidal interaction, tending to spin up the surface when it is braked down and vice versa. As a consequence, the times needed for the axial angular velocity to become equal to the orbital angular velocity may be larger than given by typical synchronization timescales. This paper aims to study the configuration of two components caused by rotational and tidal distortions in the model of a binary system. The potentials of the two distorted components can be approximated to 2nd-degree harmonics. Furthermore, both the accretion luminosity ($\sigma_{i}$) and the irradiative luminosity are included in stellar structure equations. The equilibrium structure of rotationally and tidally distorted star is exactly a triaxial ellipsoids. A formula describing the isobars is presented, and the rotational velocity and the gravitational acceleration at the primary surface simulated. The results show the distortion at the outer layers of the primary increases with temporal variation and system evolution. Besides, it was observed that the luminosity accretion is unstable, and the curve of the energy-generation rate fluctuates after the main sequence in rotation sequences. The luminosity in rotation sequences is slightly weaker than that in non-rotation sequences. As a result, the volume expands slowly. Polar ejection is intensified by the tidal effect. The ejection of an equatorial ring may be favoured by both the opacity effect and the $g_{e}(\theta,\varphi)$-effect in the binary system., Comment: 10 pages, 17 figures,Accepted by Astronomy and Astrophysics

We theoretically investigate the effect of an anisotropic trap on the instability of the polar $(m_F=0)$ phase of a spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate. By considering rigorously the spatial quantization, we show that the growth of the nascent ferromagnetic phase at short times becomes anisotropic with stronger oscillations in the magnetization correlation function along the unconfined direction., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

Excitons in a complex organic molecular crystal were studied by inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS) for the first time. The dynamic dielectric response function is measured over a large momentum transfer region, from which an exciton dispersion of 130 meV is observed. Semiempirical quantum chemical calculations reproduce well the momentum dependence of the measured dynamic dielectric responses, and thus unambiguously indicate that the lowest Frenkel exciton is confined within a fraction of the complex molecule. Our results demonstrate that IXS is a powerful tool for studying excitons in complex organic molecular systems. Besides the energy position, the IXS spectra provide a stringent test on the validity of the theoretically calculated exciton wave functions., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures
