Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are traumatic events or situations that individuals may experience during their childhood. Children living with prolonged and persistent adverse experiences may have lifelong effects on their physical and mental health. Most studies in Europe and the United States confirm that ACEs increase the risk of hypertension in adulthood. However, the association between different types of ACEs and hypertension in adulthood remains controversial. This study provides a comprehensive review of studies on the association between different types of ACEs and hypertension, which explores the effects of ACEs on hypertension in adulthood and potential mechanisms. This study also summarizes the current status of studies on ACEs and hypertension. It presents a prospective view of providing a basis for improving the early childhood developmental environment and preventing hypertension in adulthood.

An epidemiological transition in the prevalence of peripheral artery disease (PAD) is taking place especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) where an ageing population and adoption of western lifestyles are associated with an increase in PAD. We discuss the limited evidence which suggests that infection, potentially mediated by inflammation, may be a risk factor for PAD, and show by means of an ecological analysis that country-level prevalence of the major endemic infections of HIV, tuberculosis and malaria are associated with the prevalence of PAD. While further research is required, we propose that scientists and health authorities pay more attention to the interplay between communicable and non-communicable diseases, and we suggest that limiting the occurrence of endemic infections might have some effect on slowing the epidemiological transition in PAD.

Aim: To explore the trend of burden and care quality of chronic kidney disease due to type 2 diabetes mellitus (CKD‐T2DM) and their cross‐country inequalities from 1990 to 2021. Materials and Methods: Data were from the Global Burden of Disease 2021 study. Disease burden and care quality were quantified using the disability‐adjusted life years rate and the quality‐of‐care index (QCI). Trend analyses of the age‐standardized disability‐adjusted life years rate (ASDR) and age‐standardized QCI from 1990 to 2021 were conducted using the estimated annual percentage change. The associations of disease burden and care quality with the socio‐demographic index (SDI) were explored. Cross‐country inequalities in disease burden and care quality were assessed using the slope index of inequality (SII) and concentration index. Results: From 1990 to 2021, the global ASDR for CKD‐T2DM increased, while the age‐standardized QCI slightly decreased, with an estimated annual percentage change of 0.81 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.75, 0.87] and −0.08 (95% CI: −0.09, −0.07). The ASDR escalated with increasing SDI, reaching a peak at mid‐level SDI, followed by a decrease. The age‐standardized QCI was higher with increasing SDI. Globally, ASDR concentrated on countries/territories with a lower SDI. The SII of ASDR was −96.64 (95% CI: −136.94, −56.35) in 1990 and −118.15 (95% CI: −166.36, −69.94) in 2021, with a concentration index of −0.1298 (95% CI: −0.1904, −0.0692) in 1990 and −0.1104 (95% CI: −0.1819, −0.0389) in 2021. In 1990 and 2021, countries/territories at higher SDI levels exhibited increased age‐standardized QCI, indicated by an SII of 15.09 (95% CI: 10.74, 19.45) and 15.75 (95% CI: 10.92, 20.59), and a concentration index of 0.0393 (95% CI: 0.0283, 0.0503) and 0.0400 (95% CI: 0.0264, 0.0536). Conclusions: Our study highlights considerable disparities in the burden and care quality of CKD‐T2DM. Regions experiencing an increasing burden and a declining care quality simultaneously underscore the need for further research and tailored health interventions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: COVID-19 threatened global health, however little is known about the long-term courses of loneliness and their effect on mental health in adolescents. This study aimed to explore the trajectories of loneliness among adolescents in Taizhou, Zhejiang Province, China, during the last phase of the pandemic. We also aimed to identify risk factors in each loneliness course and the impact of loneliness on emotional problems, peer problems, hyperactivity and conduct problems. Methods: The study employed multistage cluster sampling to collect four waves of data from 2347 Chinese adolescents (average baseline age of 14.7 years) covering a period of 20 months (October 2021 – May 2023). The UCLA 3-Item Loneliness Scale and the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire were utilized to assess loneliness and mental health problems, respectively. Growth mixture modelling was employed to identify latent classes of loneliness trajectories. Associated risk factors were investigated using multinomial logistic regression model. Mixed-effects logistic regression models were constructed to examine the long-term impact of loneliness classes on mental health outcomes. Results: The overall percentage of loneliness increased from 22.9% at baseline to 32.2% at the fourth wave in our sample. Three classes of loneliness were identified: Decreasing Low Loneliness (58.71%), Increasing Medium Loneliness (36.52%), and Increasing High Loneliness (4.77%). Risk factors for poorer loneliness trajectories included lack of physical exercise habits, poorer mental health literacy, medium or low perceived social support, having study difficulties, being female, higher grades, and lower economic status. Loneliness classes were associated with the severity and variability of emotional problems, peer problems, hyperactivity and conduct problems (ORs for the highest loneliness class: 10.24, 4.21, 3.87, 2.68, respectively). Individuals in the higher loneliness classes experienced a significant increase in these mental health problems over time (p < 0.05 for interactions between loneliness classes and time). Conclusion: During the last phase of the pandemic, a large proportion of adolescents in our study endured medium to high levels of loneliness with no signs of improvement. Both unfavorable loneliness trajectories adversely affected internalizing and externalizing problems and displayed an upward trend in these difficulties. Background and aims: Despite evidence that patients living with cancer who continue to smoke after diagnosis are at higher risk for all‐cause mortality and reduced treatment efficacy, many cancer patients continue to smoke. This protocol is for a study to test the effectiveness of a self‐determination theory‐based intervention (quit immediately or progressively) plus instant messaging (WhatsApp or WeChat) to help smokers with cancer to quit smoking. Design: This will be a multi‐centre, two‐arm (1:1), single‐blind, pragmatic, individually randomized controlled trial. Setting: Taking part will be specialist outpatient clinics in five major hospitals in different location‐based clusters in Hong Kong. Participants: The sample will include 1448 Chinese smokers living with cancer attending medical follow‐ups at outpatient clinics. Interventions: The intervention group will receive brief advice (approximately 5–8 minutes) from research nurses in the outpatient clinics and then be invited to choose their own quit schedules (immediate or progressive). During the first 6‐month follow‐up period they will receive instant messaging with smoking cessation advice once per week for the first 3 months, and thereafter approximately once per month. They will also receive four videos, and those opting to quit progressively will receive a smoking reduction leaflet. The control group will also receive brief advice but be advised to quit immediately, and instant messaging with general health advice during the first 6‐month follow‐up period using the same schedule as the intervention group. Participants in both groups will receive smoking cessation leaflets. Measurements The primary outcome is biochemically validated smoking abstinence at 6 months, as confirmed by saliva cotinine level and carbon monoxide level in expired air. Secondary outcomes include biochemically validated smoking abstinence at 12 months, self‐reported 7‐day point prevalence of smoking abstinence at 6 and 12 months, self‐reported ≥ 50% reduction of cigarette consumption at 6 and 12 months and quality of life at 6 and 12 months. All time‐points for outcomes measures are set after randomization. Comments The results could inform research, policymaking and health‐care professionals regarding smoking cessation for patients living with cancer, and therefore have important implications for clinical practice and health enhancement. Objectives: Menopause is a significant life transition for women, impacting their physical and psychological health. The age at natural menopause (ANM) and its associated factors have differed by race and region. This study aimed to investigate ANM and associated factors of early and late menopause among Chinese women in Zhejiang province. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using a multi-stage stratified cluster sampling method to recruit 8,006 women aged 40–69 years who had resided in Zhejiang province for over 6 months between July 2019 and December 2021. Self-reported ANM and sociodemographics, lifestyle behaviors, reproductive history, and health-related factors were collected using questionnaires in face-to-face surveys. ANM were categorized into three groups: early menopause (<45 years), normal menopause (45–54 years), and late menopause (≥55 years). Kaplan-Meier survival analysis was utilized to calculate the median ANM. Multivariable multinomial logistic regression was employed to explore the associated factors of early menopause and late menopause. Results: A total of 6,047 women aged 40–69 years were included for survival analysis, with 3,176 of them for the regression analysis. The overall median ANM was 51 years (Inter-quartile range [IQR]: 51–52). Women who were smokers (odds ratio [OR]:4.54, 95% confidence interval [CI]:1.6–12.84), had irregular menstrual cycles (OR:1.78, 95% CI:1.12–2.83) and hypertension (OR:1.55, 95% CI:1.09–2.21) had a higher odds ratio of early menopause, while central obesity (OR:1.33, 95% CI:1.03–1.73) and hyperlipidemia (OR:1.51, 95% CI:1.04–2.18) were factors associated with late menopause. Conclusions: This study revealed the associations between ANM and various factors among Chinese women. These factors included socio-demographic factors such as age; life behavior factors like current or prior smoking status; reproductive history factors such as irregular menstrual cycles, miscarriages, and breastfeeding; and health-related factors like central adiposity, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia.
