19. A Case Report of Meningitis Caused by Brucella melitensis Biovar 3.

Abstract

Background: Brucellosis, a major endemic disease in northern China, is contracted by zoonosis of Brucella. We report a case of meningitis caused by Brucella melitensis biovar 3. Case Presentation: A 46-year-old man was hospitalized at a local medical facility due to symptoms of fever, soreness, and weakness on April 16, 2021. The local hospital improved the relevant examinations, and the serum tube agglutination test (SAT) for Brucella was positive. The patient underwent a week of anti-infective symptomatic treatment with doxycycline and rifampicin, however, his symptoms continued. Subsequently, he was hospitalized in our facility following convulsions and altered consciousness. We conducted several examinations, and the lumbar puncture revealed abnormal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) protein levels along with a positive culture. Biochemical and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests (based on IS711 gene) identified the pathogen as B. melitensis biovar 3. Following treatment involving with moxifloxacin hydrochloride, doxycycline, rifampin, cefatriaxone, mannitol, and dexamethasone the patient's body temperature stabilized, leading to gradual improvements in his clinical status. After two months of the oral anti-infective regimen, the condition is continuing to alleviate and the laboratory indicators returned to normal. The follow-up maintained two years, the patient with no symptomatic recurrences or sequel. Conclusion: We showed that in epidemic areas of brucellosis, patients with unexplained neurological symptoms should first be examined for neurobrucellosis. Early treatment with corticosteroids and a combination of antibiotics is beneficial for the relief and satisfactory prognosis of neurological symptoms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The exploration of affordable, efficient, and stable electrocatalysts with commensurate oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance is a significant focus of research. In this work, NiFe2O4/Fe2O3@Ni(OH)2 hollow core–shell nanotubes (NiFe2O4/Fe2O3@Ni(OH)2 HCSNs) were synthesized by a metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) engaged strategy. The hollow porous structure derived from MOFs, along with the synergistic effect of NiFe2O4/Fe2O3 hollow nanotubes (HNs) and Ni(OH)2 nanosheets (NSs), provides abundant accessible electroactive sites and facilitates rapid electron transport. As a result, the optimized NiFe2O4/Fe2O3@Ni(OH)2-3 HCSNs exhibit remarkable OER performance, demonstrating a low overpotential of 246 mV at 10 mA cm−2 and significant stability. Furthermore, an overpotential of only 340 mV is needed to reach 10 mA cm−2 in simulated seawater electrolysis (1.0 M KOH + 0.5 M NaCl) and remains stable for 70000 s. Abstract

Inland flooding and mudslides from tropical cyclone (TC) rainstorms are among the most destructive natural hazards in China, resulting in considerable direct economic losses and large numbers of fatalities. In this paper, a TC precipitation model (TCPM) is improved by incorporating the effects of complex terrain through a set of new parameters (e.g., slope, roughness, and attenuation distance) for a more accurate assessment of TC rainfall hazards in China. Moreover, by introducing parameterized spiral rainbands, the model could more accurately capture the intensity of extreme precipitation. The model comprehensively considers dynamic and thermodynamic precipitation factors and is adept at capturing the climate characteristics of TC precipitation and the probability distribution of extreme TC precipitation in China. The model is verified by providing two comparisons. One is analysis including detailed results of three typical TC cases, and the other uses empirical cumulative distribution functions for extreme observations and simulations of historical landfalling TCs in China during the period 1960–2018. The comparisons reveal that the TCPM shows impressive performance for strong TCs with heavy precipitation within 200–300 km of the TC center. Moreover, both the modeled extreme hourly and total TC precipitation probability distributions are consistent with the observations. However, the model needs to be further improved for TCs with dispersive or long-distance precipitation. Significance Statement In this paper, an optimized and physics-based model for the simulation of tropical cyclone precipitation is described and used to estimate the risk of TC rainfall hazards in China. The work is innovative in that it considers the effect of complex terrain from three perspectives, including slope, roughness, and attenuation distance. The simulations demonstrated that the model is adept at capturing the main climate characteristics of TC precipitation and the probability distribution of extreme TC precipitation in China, which is simple to run several hundred thousand times, with bright application prospects in catastrophe risk assessment.

Abstract

The development of efficient catalytic degradation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) over nanostructured metal oxide catalysts with a polyhedral structure and anisotropic texture is in demand. Herein, a one-pot and scalable method is reported to synthesize polyhedral Co3O4nanostructured-catalysts, which are involved in topotactic condensation of zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) through a pyrolysis-induced procedure. This condensation does not alter the topology of ZIF-67 precursors, thus it can be regarded as topotactic. The optimally prepared Co3O4-300 derived from ZIF-67 shows high catalytic performance for n-hexane oxidation with a T90of 196 °C at a gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) of 60 000 mL g−1h−1, superior to commercial Pt/Al2O3. In addition, this catalyst also demonstrates satisfactory catalytic stability after five successive cycles of heating–cooling tests, excellent long-term durability after 90 h of on-stream reaction and strong resistance to water vapor and CO2. Experimental results indicate that the topotactic polyhedral morphology, abundant acid sites and oxygen vacancies are beneficial for n-hexane oxidation. The interfacial catalytic degradation mechanism of n-hexane over Co3O4nanocatalysts could be explained by a progressive transition from the Langmuir–Hinshelwood (L–H) model to Mars–van Krevelen (MvK) model. This work may provide a new strategy for rational design and synthesis of metal oxide nanocatalysts enabled by topotactic condensation of metal organic frameworks for catalytic degradation of typical VOCs in real environments.
