1. Determining Whether an Individual is 18 Years or Older Based on the Third Molar Root Pulp Visibility in East China

Abstract

Objective To investigate the age-related changes of the mandibular third molar root pulp visibility in individuals in East China, and to explore the feasibility of applying this method to determine whether an individual is 18 years or older. Methods A total of 1 280 oral panoramic images were collected from the 15-30 years old East China population, and the mandibular third molar root pulp visibility in all oral panoramic images was evaluated using OLZE 0-3 four-stage method, and the age distribution of the samples at each stage was analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results Stages 0, 1, 2 and 3 first appeared in 16.88, 19.18, 21.91 and 25.44 years for males and in 17.47, 20.91, 22.01 and 26.01 years for females. In all samples, individuals at stages 1 to 3 were over 18 years old. Conclusion It is feasible to determine whether an individual in East China is 18 years or older based on the mandibular third molar root pulp visibility on oral panoramic images.

14. High-Level Extracellular Production of a Trisaccharide-Producing Alginate Lyase AlyC7 in Escherichia coli and Its Agricultural Application.

Abstract

Alginate oligosaccharides (AOS), products of alginate degradation by endotype alginate lyases, possess favorable biological activities and have broad applications. Although many have been reported, alginate lyases with homogeneous AOS products and secretory production by an engineered host are scarce. Herein, the alginate lyase AlyC7 from Vibrio sp. C42 was characterized as a trisaccharide-producing lyase exhibiting high activity and broad substrate specificity. With PelB as the signal peptide and 500 mM glycine as the additive, the extracellular production of AlyC7 in Escherichia coli reached 1122.8 U/mL after 27 h cultivation in Luria-Bertani medium. The yield of trisaccharides from sodium alginate degradation by the produced AlyC7 reached 758.6 mg/g, with a purity of 85.1%. The prepared AOS at 20 μg/mL increased the root length of lettuce, tomato, wheat, and maize by 27.5%, 25.7%, 9.7%, and 11.1%, respectively. Abstract

Summary: Buckwheat is an important crop which originated in China and spread widely across Eurasia. However, exactly where in China domestication took place remains controversial. Archaeological and palynological records suggest a longer cultivation history of buckwheat in northern China than in southwestern China, but this conflicts with phylogenetic evidence implicating southwestern China as the centre of origin and diversity of buckwheat.We investigate alternative methodologies for inferring the occurrence of buckwheat cultivation and suggest that relative abundance could provide a reliable measure for distinguishing between wild and cultivated buckwheat in both present‐day and fossil samples.Approximately 12 800‐yr palaeoecological record shows that Fagopyrum pollen occurred only infrequently before the early Holocene. As southwestern China entered the early agricultural period, c. 8000–7000 yr ago, a slight increase in abundance of Fagopyrum pollen was observed. Approximately 4000 yr ago, concurrent with the Pu minority beginning to develop dry‐land agriculture, the abundance of Fagopyrum pollen increased significantly, suggesting the cultivation of this crop. Fagopyrum pollen rose to a maximum value c. 1270 yr ago, suggesting an intensification of agricultural activity.These findings fill a gap in the Fagopyrum pollen record in southwestern China and provide new indications that early cultivation may have occurred in this region. Abstract

This study determined the effects of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi inoculation on the N and P contents in the soil–plant continuum and its subsequent effect on oat grain yield under drought stress. Separate experiments were conducted during the oat growing seasons (2020 and 2021) in which AM fungi inoculation with Rhizophagus intraradiceswas performed in soil with 75% and 55% relative water contents. In response to AM fungi inoculation under normal moisture, the infection rate was significantly higher than in water-limited regimes during both years. The AM fungi alleviated the negative effects of drought stress by influencing total N and P in oat soil, improving N contents in oat roots, stems, and ears, and accumulating more P in leaves. We also found that the promoting effect of AM fungi inoculation on accumulating N in various oat organs seemed to contribute more than that on P under drought stress. Above all, AM fungi significantly ameliorated the effects of drought stress and increased oat grain yield by 14.74% in 2020 and 14.20% in 2021. The soil total N was the key factor that affected oat grain yield, and N and P contents in various oat organs under drought stress and AM fungi inoculation. Based on these findings, AM fungi benefit oat nutrition and productivity and could improve oat performance in dryland agriculture.

Abstract

Gas concentrations of different sections in return airway of working face were tested, and the gas distribution contours of roadway section were made for studying gas concentration distribution. Conclusions: gas distribution in different sections of roadway is uneven, and gas will be fully homogeneous with air after moving 100 m in front of working face; goaf gas pouring out through the upper corner has a greater impact on distribution of gas concentration. Recommendations for layout of gas monitoring points and sensors in return air of working face were provided, namely gas sensors in return airway should be arranged in central line of the roadway less than 300 mm away from the roof, and a sensor measuring point should be arranged at the place 10 m away from the upper corner.
