An important public concern about the impact of recreational cannabis legalization is how it may affect adolescent cannabis use. Prior research on this issue has primarily focused on the implications of medical cannabis legalization for adolescents and used data that cover a relatively short post-legalization period. This study extends this line of research by examining the relationship between recreational cannabis legalization and adolescent cannabis use in Washington State, using the National Survey of Drug Use and Health (NSDHU) data from 2005 to 2019. Based on a quasi-experimental research design, this study found some evidence suggesting a positive effect of recreational legalization on the prevalence of adolescent cannabis use and cannabis initiation. The efficacy of tandem dehydrogenation-condensation catalysts for the upgrade of bio-derived intermediates is largely determined by their relative (de-)hydrogenation and decarbonylation activity. Here, the effects of support and particle size of heterogeneous PdCu alloy catalysts on (de-)hydrogenation and decarbonlylation reactions were investigated using kinetic measurements, X-ray absorption spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT). The chemical mismatch of Cu2+ with Ti4+ and Ca2+ prevents the substitution of Cu into the lattice of TiO2 or hydroxyapatite supports, and facilitates its alloying with Pd, resulting in improved selectivity for hydrogenation-dehydrogenation reactions compared to decarbonylation reactions. Based on kinetic measurements of butyraldehyde reactions over Pd and PdCu/SiO2 model catalysts, decarbonylation activity is attributed to the presence of Pd surface ensembles, while (de-)hydrogenation reactions are catalyzed by PdCu sites on the surface. This is consistent with selectivity and CO coverage trends with increasing conversion, and DFT-based microkinetic modeling. Selectivity control can also be achieved using the PdCu nanocluster size. Smaller nanoparticles favor the C-CO bond scission step of the decarbonylation reaction, due to the stronger binding of CO and alkyl species to sites of lower coordination. CO-induced segregation of reactive Pd atoms to under-coordinated step/edge sites also amplifies the geometric effect on the catalytic behavior.

Condensation reactions such as Guerbet and aldol are important since they allow for C-C bond formation and give higher molecular weight oxygenates. An initial study identified Pd-supported on hydrotalcite as an active catalyst for the transformation, although this catalyst showed extensive undesirable decarbonylation. A catalyst containing Pd and Cu in a 3:1 ratio dramatically decreased decarbonylation, while preserving the high catalytic rates seen with Pd-based catalysts. A combination of XRD, EXAFS, TEM, and CO chemisorption and TPD revealed the formation of CuPd bimetallic nanoparticles with a Cu-enriched surface. Finally, density functional theory studies suggest that the surface segregation of Cu atoms in the bimetallic alloy catalyst produces Cu sites with increased reactivity, while the Pd sites responsible for unselective decarbonylation pathways are selectively poisoned by CO.

Designing robust catalysts for low‐temperature oxidation is pertinent to the development of advanced combustion engines to meet increasingly stringent emissions limitations. Oxidation of CO, hydrocarbon, and NO pollutants over platinum‐group catalysts suffer from strong inhibition due to their competitive adsorption, while coinage metals are generally slow at activating O2. Through computational screening, we discovered a PdCu alloy catalyst that completely oxidizes CO below 150 °C without inhibition by NO, propylene or water. This is attributed primarily to geometric effects and the presence of CO bound to Pd sites within the Cu‐rich surface of the PdCu alloy. We demonstrate that the novel PdCu catalyst can be used in tandem with a PtPd catalyst to achieve sequential, inhibition‐free, complete oxidation of CO in a two‐bed system, while also achieving 50 % NO conversion below 120 °C. In marine structural engineering, the impact resistance of concrete holds high significance. The determination of whether the combined use of expansion agent (EA) and glass fiber (GF) has a synergistic effect on the impact resistance of seawater–sea-sand concrete (SSC) and plays a role in its performance and application. In this study, the dynamic Brazilian disc test at various strain rates was carried out with an SHPB device to investigate the effect of mixing 0% and 6% EA with 0% and 1% GF on the dynamic splitting tensile properties of SSC. The results show that strain rate effect on EA and GF-reinforced SSC during dynamic splitting tensile tests at higher strain rates, indicating strong strain rate sensitivity. The synergistic reinforcement of EA and GF consumed more energy under impact loading, thus maintaining the morphological integrity of concrete. However, the dynamic splitting tensile strength obtained in the Brazilian disc test had a significant overload effect which cannot be ignored. EA doped at 6% and GF doped at 1% showed a synergistic enhancement of SSC's dynamic splitting tensile properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The freeboard height of the ship is a critical parameter that mirrors the ship’s load capacity and safety performance. However, research on the height of the ship is less explored. This letter derives imaging differences between the top and bottom of the ship’s freeboard based on SAR imaging geometry and then establishes a ship-sea coupling scattering path model. Relying on the proposed model and the polarimetric synthetic aperture radar’s (PolSAR) capability to differentiate various scattering mechanisms, a method for retrieving the freeboard height of ships is proposed. This method primarily utilizes the total backscattering power SPAN and double-bounce scattering component (DBL) features of single-pass PolSAR data acquired with a single antenna. Finally, the proposed method is verified by the in situ data and tested on different types of ships, such as cargo ships and bulk carriers, and the absolute relative error (ARE) of the retrieval results is less than 6.1%.
