Since the first discovery of grapevine brown leaf spot disease in Turpan, Xinjiang, China, in 2007, it has been a common occurrence in grapevine-growing regions. Grapevine brown leaf spot seriously decreases fruit yield and has become one of the most important leaf diseases in the Turpan region. However, thus far, there have been no reports on the evaluation of grapevine germplasm resources for resistance to brown leaf spot disease. In addition, the response mechanism of grapevine leaves to brown leaf spot infection has not been revealed. To better understand the resistance of grapevine germplasm resources to brown leaf spot disease, we first evaluated resistance in grapevine varieties. On this basis, the most susceptible variety ‘Sultanina’ was selected as the experimental material for this study. Transcriptome analysis and carbohydrate content analysis were performed on ‘Sultanina’ leaves with different levels of disease susceptibility. As the severity of the disease increased, the content of fructose gradually decreased, while the content of trehalose gradually increased. Transcriptome data revealed that differentially expressed genes were enriched in the pentose and glucuronate interchange pathway. These results suggest that the sugar trehalose may play an important role in the response of ‘Sultanina’ leaves to brown leaf spot infection. In addition, the pentose and glucuronate interchange pathway may be involved in the response mechanism of brown leaf spot disease. Our work provides new insights into the mechanism of the ‘Sultanina’ leaf response to brown leaf spot infection.

Imine-linked covalent organic frameworks (COFs) provide distinctive prospects for promoting photocatalytic H2O2 production, yet the intricate involvement of imine-derived linkages chemistry under light irradiation remains incompletely elucidated. Here, imine-linked COF-LZU1 demonstrates a visible light-driven H2O2 evolution rate of 387 ​μmol ​g−1 ​h−1, particularly, negligible dependence on the sacrificial agents. By virtue of electron paramagnetic spectroscopy and solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance, we experimentally tracked the structure evolution and identified its autooxidation to Wurster's salt mimics under the photocatalytic conditioning. This finding coincides with the radical anion ·O2− governed reaction pathway and is further rationalized with additional theoretical calculations. This study provides insights into both photophysical/photochemical aspects over the imine-linkage structure.

Study region: China and the different climatic zones. Study focus: Vapor pressure deficit (VPD) and soil moisture (SM) are vital for the land-atmosphere hydrological cycle and vegetation growth. Understanding the spatiotemporal variations of VPD and SM is essential for exploring vegetation dynamics and ecosystem changes. However, our current understanding of the simultaneous variations of VPD and SM within specific regions remains limited. This study utilized Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) methods to analyze the spatiotemporal variability of VPD, surface SM (SMsurf), and root-zone SM (SMroot), respectively. We then investigated the synchronous and asynchronous variations of VPD and SM and examined their relationships with climatic factors. New hydrologic insights for the region: From 1980–2020, VPD exhibited a significant upward trend across China and in various climate zones, indicating an increase in atmospheric dryness. However, the trends of SMsurf and SMroot showed a slight upward trend across China but divergent patterns in different climate zones. In summary, approximately 43% of China experiences a significant simultaneous increase in both VPD and SM, mainly in semi-arid and arid regions. Conversely, about 4% of China shows contrasting changes in VPD and SM, primarily in humid tropical and subtropical regions. These findings enhance our understanding of VPD and SM patterns in various climates, emphasizing the significance of soil drought in humid and semi-humid regions.

Crop resilience measures must be strengthened in response to the global climate impact. Temperature stress exacerbates the impact on crop growth and grain yield, threatening the sustainability of grapevine production and dependent wine industries. Grape (Vitis spp.) is one of the most widely cultivated fruit crops in the world, as well as the most economically important fruit. However, grape yield and quality are highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly temperature stress. Understanding the molecular mechanisms that control grapevine responses to environmental stresses and the development of stress-resilient varieties have markedly advanced through the rapid evolution of high-throughput sequencing technologies, state-of-the-art multi-omics analytic platforms, and automated phenotyping facilities. In the current review, we summarized recent genomic progress and omics-based breakthroughs in grapes that have contributed to abiotic stress tolerance via genetic strategies during the last decades. Furthermore, we delve into prospective challenges and opportunities pertaining to the use of multi-omics-based breeding strategies aimed at designing climate-resilient grape varieties. Advances in highly efficient de novo or re-domestication histories, as well as the characterization of numerous trait genes using various omics tools, are also discussed. By describing the underlying mechanisms of crop adaptability and future breeding strategies to meet demand due to population bursts in the following decades while keeping climate change in mind, the information will offer potential solutions for sustainable grape and wine businesses.

The implementation of long-term ecological restoration projects and policies over the past two decades has played a crucial role in advancing the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 15. However, the resulting dynamics of new forests remain unclear. In this study, we initially examined the distribution and sources of new forests and subsequently investigated the gross primary productivity (GPP) variations within these forested regions. We discovered that new forests are mainly converted from previously cultivated land, which is primarily due to the Grain for Green Project. The new forests are mainly distributed in mid-low altitude areas and gentle slope regions, indicating that accessible areas are prone to damage but also easy to recover. Over approximately two decades of ecological restoration projects, the GPP of new forests has significantly increased trends and the growth rates of new forests vary significantly in different climatic zones. Moreover, the GPP and growth rates of new forests displayed spatial heterogeneity. Specifically, the GPP in the new forests was highest in the eastern region, followed by the central south region, while the northwest region had the lowest GPP. Meanwhile, the southwest region shows the highest GPP growth rate among new forests, while the northwest region has the slowest growth rate. Furthermore, the average GPP of new forests is lower than stable forests, but new forests in China grow faster (3.735 vs. 2.587), highlighting their substantial carbon potential. These findings indicate that it's crucial to account for variations in stand and forest change rates when modeling forest carbon sequestration potential.

Abstract Producing functional soft fibers via existing spinning methods is environmentally and economically costly due to the complexity of spinning equipment, involvement of copious solvents, intensive consumption of energy, and multi-step pre-/post-spinning treatments. We report a nonsolvent vapor-induced phase separation spinning approach under ambient conditions, which resembles the native spider silk fibrillation. It is enabled by the optimal rheological properties of dopes via engineering silver-coordinated molecular chain interactions and autonomous phase transition due to the nonsolvent vapor-induced phase separation effect. Fiber fibrillation under ambient conditions using a polyacrylonitrile-silver ion dope is demonstrated, along with detailed elucidations on tuning dope spinnability through rheological analysis. The obtained fibers are mechanically soft, stretchable, and electrically conductive, benefiting from elastic molecular chain networks via silver-based coordination complexes and in-situ reduced silver nanoparticles. Particularly, these fibers can be configured as wearable electronics for self-sensing and self-powering applications. Our ambient-conditions spinning approach provides a platform to create functional soft fibers with unified mechanical and electrical properties at a two-to-three order of magnitude less energy cost under ambient conditions.

Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) is one of the most important optical properties of aerosols that may affect the energy budgets of our Earth–atmosphere system significantly. Currently, while regional and even global AOD knowledge has been given by various satellites or models, these products are still fraught with uncertainties. In this study, one sophisticated satellite-derived AOD product from MODIS (MODerate resolution Imaging Spectral-radiometer) and two state-of-the-art model-based AOD products from CAMS (Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service) and MERRA-2 (Modern-Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Application Version 2), based on AERONET measurements from 2000–2022, analyzed the spatial distribution characteristics of global AOD. Then using the Mann-Kendall (MK) trend test, the AOD changing trends revealed by the three products were also computed and analyzed. The accuracies of these products and the reliabilities of changing trends derived are discussed and concluded finally. Our study demonstrates that MODIS products have wider applicability, matching best with AERONET globally, while CAMS and MERRA-2 products are only reliable in North America, South America, and Europe. Through comparative analysis of the AOD trends, we found that MODIS, CAMS, and MERRA-2 AOD consistently exhibited decreasing trends in eastern Asia, Europe, and eastern North America. On the other hand, different products showed increasing trends in regions like West Asia, South Asia, and South Africa, suggesting their limited reliability. The reliability assessment shows that 41.45% of the areas have consistent trends among the three products, with approximately 3.2% showing significant and consistent results. When using site trend validation, the proportions of sites with consistent trends are highest at 64.56% and 46.84% respectively. The regions with the best reliability of global trend changes are mainly distributed in North America, Europe, Australia, eastern Asia, and Central South America. This study provides new insights for validating aerosol changes using remote sensing and has the potential to enhance future monitoring and evaluation methods of aerosol products.

In recent years, the interaction of intracellular organelles such as mitochondria and lysosomal functions has attracted increasing attention. Recent evidence suggests that mitochondrion-lysosomal contact plays a key role in regulating lysosomal biogenesis and maintaining cellular homeostasis. Myocardial ischemia and reperfusion will lead to corresponding changes in the autophagy flux in cardiomyocytes, and lysosomes are a key link in the process of autophagy, and the fusion of lysosomes and autophagosomes is an essential link in the occurrence of autophagy. Therefore, the function and homeostasis of lysosomes also undergo different changes during myocardial ischemia and reperfusion. Lysosomal-related biological factors and membrane proteins also play different roles. This article will review the mechanism of lysosomes in myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury and the research progress of lysosomal-related proteins.

The spatial unit of urban agglomerations is extremely important for reducing negative externalities in large cities. Although there is a large body of literature on reducing negative externalities within a single city, few studies have focused on the important role of urban agglomerations. To offer a new method for reducing negative externalities in large cities and fill in this gap in the literature, our paper examines the effect of spatial functional division in urban agglomerations on negative externalities in large cities by applying the concept of spatial functional division to data on 19 urban agglomerations and data on negative externalities from 35 large cities in China. We first show that spatial functional division in urban agglomerations can significantly reduce negative externalities. The robustness of the results was confirmed using the instrumental variable approach, alternative indicators, and other robustness checks. Furthermore, we identified the productivity improvement mechanisms in large cities that generate the observed mitigatory effects of spatial functional division in urban agglomerations on negative externalities in large cities. The heterogeneous analyzes indicate that spatial functional division in urban agglomerations has a stronger mitigatory effect on negative externalities in large cities in the context of higher inter-city connectivity, greater polycentricity, and official approval regarding urban agglomerations’ regional planning. Our findings emphasize the importance of urban agglomerations for reducing negative externalities in large cities, particularly in China, where urban agglomerations have been rapidly developing and spatial functional division in urban agglomerations has been continuously improving.

Two-stage remote sensing image captioning (RSIC) methods have achieved promising results by incorporating additional pre-trained remote sensing tasks to extract supplementary information and improve caption quality. However, these methods face limitations in semantic comprehension, as pre-trained detectors/classifiers are constrained by predefined labels, leading to an oversight of the intricate and diverse details present in remote sensing images (RSIs). Additionally, the handling of auxiliary remote sensing tasks separately can introduce challenges in ensuring seamless integration and alignment with the captioning process. To address these problems, we propose a novel cross-modal retrieval and semantic refinement (CRSR) RSIC method. Specifically, we employ a cross-modal retrieval model to retrieve relevant sentences of each image. The words in these retrieved sentences are then considered as primary semantic information, providing valuable supplementary information for the captioning process. To further enhance the quality of the captions, we introduce a semantic refinement module that refines the primary semantic information, which helps to filter out misleading information and emphasize visually salient semantic information. A Transformer Mapper network is introduced to expand the representation of image features beyond the retrieved supplementary information with learnable queries. Both the refined semantic tokens and visual features are integrated and fed into a cross-modal decoder for caption generation. Through extensive experiments, we demonstrate the superiority of our CRSR method over existing state-of-the-art approaches on the RSICD, the UCM-Captions, and the Sydney-Captions datasets

The signal-in-space range error (SISRE) has a direct impact on the performance of global navigation satellite systems (GNSSs). It is an important indicator of navigation satellite space server performance. The new B-CNAV navigation messages (B-CNAV1 and B-CNAV2) are broadcast on the satellites of the Beidou Global Navigation Satellite System (BDS-3), and they are different from D1 navigation messages in satellite orbit parameters. The orbit accuracy of B-CNAV navigation messages lacks analyses and comparisons with D1. The accuracy and stability of the new hydrogen and rubidium clocks on BDS-3 satellites need annual analyses of long time series, which will affect the service quality of this system. Based on precise ephemeris products from the Center for Orbit Determination in Europe (COD), the orbit error, clock error, and SISRE of 24 medium Earth orbit (MEO) satellite D1 and B-CNAV navigation messages of BDS-3 were computed, analyzed, and compared. Their annual evolution processes for the entire year of 2022 were studied. Thanks to the use of inter-satellite links (ISLs) adopted by BDS-3 MEO satellites, the ages of the ephemeris are accurate and the percent of ages of data, ephemerides (AODEs), and ages of data and clocks (AODCs) shorter than 12 h were 99.95% and 99.96%, respectively. In addition, the broadcast orbit performance was also improved by ISLs. The root mean square (RMS) values of the BDS-3 MEO broadcast ephemeris orbit error were 0.067 m, 0.273 m, and 0.297 m in the radial, cross, and along directions, respectively. Moreover, the 3D RMS value was 0.450 m. Thanks to the use of new orbit parameters in the B-CNAV navigation messages of BDS-3 MEO, its satellite orbit accuracy was obviously better than that of D1 in the radial direction. Its improved accuracy can reach up to about 1.2 cm, and the percentage of its accuracy improvement was about 19.06%. With respect to clock errors, the timescale differences between the two clock products were eliminated to assess the accuracy of broadcasting ephemeris clock errors. A standard deviation value of 0.256 m shows good performances as a result of the use of the two new types of atomic clocks, although the RMS value was 0.541 m due to a nonzero mean bias. Overall, the accuracy of atomic clocks was good. For the new hydrogen and rubidium atomic clocks, their RMS and standard deviation were 0.563 m and 0.231 m and 0.519 m and 0.281 m, respectively. The stability of the former was better than that of the latter. However, due to the nonzero mean bias the latter was better than the former in accuracy. The RMS value of the SISRE of BDS-3 MEO’s broadcast ephemeris was 0.556 m, and the value was 0.920 m when it had a 95% confidence level. In contrast, after deducting the influence of the clock error, the value of SISRE_ORB was 0.092 m. Since the satellite clock error was substantially larger than the orbit radial error, the SISRE was mainly affected by the clock error, and their annual evolutions were consistent. Because of the improvement to the B-CNAV’s navigation message with respect to orbit radial accuracy, SISRE_ORB has improved in accuracy. Compared to D1, it had a significant effect on improving the accuracy of SISRE_ORB, and the percentage of the accuracy improvement was 8.40%.

Single-hinge cleaved antibodies (scIgGs) in tumors damped NK cell cytotoxic activities and resulted in more aggressive tumor progression, which can be rescued by targeting the neoepitope in scIgGs with an anti-hinge antibody.

Objectives With the development of intelligent ships, it has been difficult for traditional crack damage detection methods to meet the detection requirements. This paper proposes a real-time crack damage detection method for box girders based on a gated recurrent unit (GRU) neural network. MethodsUsing the secondary development technology of Abaqus based on the Python language, a box girder crack damage model is built, and its acceleration response under dynamic Gaussian white noise excitation is calculated. A dataset is generated by expanding the original data using the data cropping method, and the influence of noise is considered. A box girder crack damage detection model based on GRU is established, the acceleration response dataset is directly used as input and the minimum loss function value is used as a target to train the model. This method is then compared to the wavelet packet transform-based multi-layer perceptron (WPT-MLP) model. ResultsThe comparison shows that the GRU model proposed in this paper has higher detection accuracy than the WPT-MLP model in damage location and extent detection. It is less sensitive to noise and has higher accuracy in approximate prediction. ConclusionsThe results of this study verify the applicability of GRU neural networks in the crack damage detection of box girders containing multiple plates.

Dynamic economic dispatch (DED) is a multi constraint and nonlinear complex problem, which is embodied in the dynamic decision-making coupled with each other in time and space. It is generally transformed into a high-dimensional multi constraint optimization problem. In this paper, a multi Strategy firefly algorithm (MSRFA) is proposed to solve the DED problem. MSRFA puts forward three strategies through the idea of opposite learning strategy and rough data reasoning to optimize the initialization and iteration process of the algorithm, improve the convergence speed of the algorithm in medium and high dimensions, and improve the escape ability when the algorithm falls into local optimization; The performance of MSRFA is tested in the simulation experiment of DED problem. The experimental results show that MSRFA can search the optimal power generation cost and minimum load error in the experiment, which reflects MSRFA superior stability and ability to jump out of local optimization. Therefore, MSRFA is an efficient way to solve the DED problem.

Abstract Background The bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers) roots responded differently in terms of morphological and anatomical characteristics under diverse submergence conditions, and they developed aerenchyma under non-flooding condition. In order to understand these mechanisms, bermudagrass cuttings were used as experimental material to examine their biomass, root morphology, and aerenchyma formation under three different water treatments, including control (CK), shallow submergence (SS), and deep submergence (DS). Results The total root length, root volume, root surface area, and biomass of bermudagrass were largest in CK, followed by SS and DS. However, the average root diameter was greater in each of DS and SS than that in CK. Root aerenchyma formation was observed in CK, and submergence boosted the aerenchyma formation and the root cavity rate. Furthermore, our study found that the process of aerenchyma formation began with the increase of cell volume and cell separation to form a narrow space, and these cells gradually died to form matured aerenchyma cavity, which belongs to schizo-lysigenous aerenchyma. Meanwhile, typical biomarkers of programmed cell death were also observed. Conclusion Overall, these results suggested that submergence inhibited the accumulation of biomass and root growth, but facilitated aerenchyma formation by increasing root diameter.

FUSCA3 (FUS3) is a member of B3-domain transcription factor family and master regulator of seed development. It has potential roles in hormone biosynthesis and signaling pathways and therefore plays diverse roles in plant life cycle, especially in seed germination, dormancy, embryo formation, seed and fruit development, and maturation. However, there is limited information about its functions in seed and fruit development of grapevine. In this study, we expressed VvFUS3 in tomato for its functional characterization. Overexpression of VvFUS3 in tomato led to a reduction in seed number and seed weight without affecting the fruit size. Histological analysis found that both cell expansion and cell division in transgenic seed and fruit pericarp have been affected. However, there were no obvious differences in pollen size, shape, and viability, suggesting that VvFUS3 affects seed development but not the pollen grains. Moreover, the expression of several genes with presumed roles in seed development and hormone signaling pathways was also influenced by VvFUS3. These results suggest that VvFUS3 is involved in hormonal signaling pathways that regulate seed number and size. In conclusion, our study provides novel preliminary information about the pivotal roles of VvFUS3 in seed and fruit development and these findings can potentially serve as a reference for molecular breeding of seedless grapes.

Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) contributes to tumor invasion, metastasis and drug resistance. AKT activation is key in a number of cellular processes. While many positive regulators for either EMT or AKT activation have been reported, few negative regulators are established. Through kinase cDNA screen, we identified brain-type creatine kinase (CKB or BCK) as a potent suppressor for both. As a ubiquitously expressed kinase in normal tissues, CKB is significantly downregulated in several solid cancer types. Lower CKB expression is significantly associated with worse prognosis. Phenotypically, CKB overexpression suppresses, while its silencing promotes, EMT and cell migration, xenograft tumor growth and metastasis of prostate cancer cells. AKT activation is one of the most prominent signaling events upon CKB silencing in prostate cancer cells, which is in line with prostate cancer TCGA data. EMT enhanced by CKB silencing is abolished by AKT inhibition. Mechanistically, CKB interacts with AKT and sequestrates it from activation by mTOR. We further elucidated that an 84aa fragment at C-terminus of CKB protein interacts with AKT's PH domain. Ectopic expression of the 84aa CKB fragment inhibits AKT activation, EMT and cell proliferation. Interestingly, molecular dynamics simulation on crystal structures of AKT and CKB independently demonstrates that AKT's PH domain and CKB's 84aa fragment establish their major interaction interface. In summary, we have discovered CKB as a negative regulator of EMT and AKT activation, revealing a new mode of their regulation . We have also demonstrated that CKB downregulation is a poor prognosticator, which is sufficient to promote prostate cancer progression.

Abstract Durable electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding is highly desired, as electromagnetic pollution is a great concern for electronics’ stable performance and human health. Although a superhydrophobic surface can extend the service lifespan of EMI shielding materials, degradation of its protection capability and insufficient self-healing are troublesome issues due to unavoidable physical/chemical damages under long-term application conditions. Here, we report, for the first time, an instantaneously self-healing approach via microwave heating to achieve durable shielding performance. First, a hydrophobic 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorooctyltriethoxysilane (POTS) layer was coated on a polypyrrole (PPy)-modified fabric (PPy@POTS), enabling protection against the invasion of water, salt solution, and corrosive acidic and basic solutions. Moreover, after being damaged, the POTS layer can, for the first time, be instantaneously self-healed via microwave heating for a very short time, i.e., 4 s, benefiting from the intense thermal energy generated by PPy under electromagnetic wave radiation. This self-healing ability is also repeatable even after intentionally severe plasma etching, which highlights the great potential to achieve robust and durable EMI shielding applications. Significantly, this approach can be extended to other EMI shielding materials where heat is a triggering stimulus for healing thin protection layers. We envision that this work could provide insights into fabricating EMI shielding materials with durable performance for portable and wearable devices, as well as for human health care.

Environmental filtering (EF) and dispersal filtering (DF) are widely known to shape plant community assembly. Particularly in arid and semi-arid mountainous regions, however, it remains unclear whether EF or DF dominate in the community assembly of different life forms or how they interact along elevational gradients. This research aims to reveal how different ecological processes influence herbaceous and woody community assembly and how they respond to various environmental drivers and elevational gradients. Here we integrated taxonomic diversity (TD), phylogenetic diversity (PD), and ecological drivers across an elevational gradient of 1,420 m in the Helan Mountain Nature Reserve, in typical arid and semi-arid areas of China. This study showed that the TD and PD of herbaceous communities significantly increase linearly with changing elevation gradients, while woody ‘TD’ showed a unimodal pattern, and there was little relationship between woody ‘PD’ and elevation. Herbaceous species exhibited significant phylogenetic clustering at low elevations, where they were influenced by climate, aspect, and tree cover. However, woody species exhibited random patterns across elevations. Herbaceous and woody species’ taxonomic and phylogenetic beta diversity is governed primarily by spatial turnover rather than nestedness. Spatial turnover is caused primarily by EF and DF’s combined influence, but their relative importance differs between herbaceous and woody communities. Therefore, we conclude that the responses of herbaceous and woody plants along elevation gradients in the Helan Mountains are decoupled due to their different adaptation strategies to climate factors in the drylands. These findings are important for understanding the assembly mechanisms driving plant communities in dryland under the context of dramatic increases in drought driven by climate warming.

Coronary artery to pulmonary artery fistula (CPAF) is a congenital or acquired abnormal channel between arteries, with a left-to-right cardiac shunting, which may lead to myocardial ischemia, arrhythmia, thrombotic complications, and heart failure. CPAF is usually detected by coronary angiography but few reports have used beating-heart surgery as a detection method. The patient in this case report is a 39-year-old male diagnosed with atrial septal defect (ASD), bicuspid pulmonary valve, and moderate tricuspid regurgitation (TR). He is asymptomatic. In preoperative evaluation, significant CPAF was suspected using echocardiography. The patient refused coronary angiography due to allergic history. Therefore, the cardiac team designed and performed on-pump beating-heart surgery (OPBHS) to detect and repair these disorders, and suggested OPBHS as a myocardial protection strategy for the patient at low surgical risk. A rare and complex cardiovascular case with CPAFs from two branches of the left anterior descending coronary (LAD) artery to the main pulmonary artery (MPA) with ASD, bicuspid pulmonary valve, and moderate TR has not yet been reported in the literature, and its embryological hypothesis has been further analyzed in this report.

Understanding the spatial distribution characteristics and drivers of ecological service value (ESV) in the six northwestern provinces, which are the main components of the Chinese section of the “Silk Road Economic Belt”, is crucial to the sustainable social and economic development of the six northwestern provinces and the countries along the economic belt and informs regional environmental protection policies. Based on the land use data of the six northwestern provinces from 2000 to 2018, the spatial distribution of ESV was determined using the modified equivalent factor method to calculate their ecological service values, and the Geodetector was used to determine the main factors affecting the distribution of ESV. The results show that (1) the total number of ESV in the six northwestern provinces is increasing year by year. (2) The spatial distribution of ESV in the six northwestern provinces varied significantly. (3) The single-factor drivers affecting the spatial distribution of ESV were normalized vegetation index (NDVI) and precipitation, and the multi-factor interactions were NDVI ∩ temperature and NDVI ∩ precipitation, with the above factors contributing most to the spatial distribution of ESV in the six northwestern provinces. Based on the results of the study, it is possible to provide a scientific basis for ecological protection and optimal land management, as well as to propose an applicable methodology for assessing regional ESV for similar regions.

VLFSs (Very Large Floating Structures) are often assembled by multiple modules through connectors where the connector structure is prone to stress concentration. Therefore, the loads at the connectors have become a significant focus in VLFS design. In this paper, the FMFC (Flexible Module Flexible Connector) method, which can account for the elastic deformation of each module and the connector, is established in order to predict the coupling response of the connector and the platform. The finite element model of a dual-module transfer platform with a hinged connector is established and the modal shape characteristics of the entire structure are analyzed. The accuracy of the method is verified through a model test, where the model was scaled as 1:50. Furthermore, the RAOs (Response Amplitude Operators) of connector loads were calculated. It was found that the horizontal loads (along the x and y directions) were more sensitive to the wave direction. Furthermore, the wave direction where the maximum short-term significant value appears was not consistent with the direction of the maximum RAO. The loads response law of the VLFS with a hinged connector is summarized in this paper and provides a reference for the design of connectors.

Abstract Background B-box (BBX) zinc-finger transcription factors play important roles in plant growth, development, and stress response. Although these proteins have been studied in model plants such as Arabidopsis thaliana or Oryza sativa, little is known about the evolutionary history or expression patterns of BBX proteins in grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.). Results We identified a total of 25 VviBBX genes in the grapevine genome and named them according to the homology with Arabidopsis. These proteins were classified into five groups on the basis of their phylogenetic relationships, number of B-box domains, and presence or absence of a CCT domain or VP motif. BBX proteins within the same group showed similar exon-intron structures and were unevenly distributed in grapevine chromosomes. Synteny analyses suggested that only segmental duplication events contributed to the expansion of the VviBBX gene family in grapevine. The observed syntenic relationships between some BBX genes from grapevine and Arabidopsis suggest that they evolved from a common ancestor. Transcriptional analyses showed that the grapevine BBX genes were regulated distinctly in response to powdery mildew infection and various phytohormones. Moreover, the expression levels of a subset of BBX genes in ovules were much higher in seedless grapevine cultivars compared with seeded cultivars during ovule development, implying a potential role in seed abortion. Additionally, VviBBX8, VquBBX15a and VquBBX29b were all located in the nucleus and had transcriptional activity except for VquBBX29b. Conclusions The results of this study establish the genome-wide analysis of the grapevine BBX family and provide a framework for understanding the biological roles of BBX genes in grapevine.

Wearable sensing electronic systems (WSES) are becoming a fundamental platform to construct smart and intelligent networks for broad applications. Various physiological data are readily collected by the WSES, including biochemical, biopotential, and biophysical signals from human bodies. However, understanding these sensing data, such as feature extractions, recognitions, and classifications, is largely restrained because of the insufficient capacity when using conventional data processing techniques. Recent advances in sensing performance and system‐level operation quality of the WSES are expedited with the assistance of machine learning (ML) algorithms. Here, the state‐of‐the‐art of the ML‐assisted WSES is summarized with emphasis on how the accurate perceptions on physiological signals under different algorithms paradigm augment the performance of the WSES for diverse applications. Concretely, ML algorithms that are frequently implemented in the WSES studies are first synopsized. Then broad applications of ML‐assisted WSES with strengthened functions are discussed in the following sections, including intelligent physiological signals monitoring, disease diagnosis, on‐demand treatments, assistive devices, human–machine interface, and multiple sensations‐based virtual and augmented reality. Finally, challenges confronted for the ML‐assisted WSES are addressed.

Abstract Plastic waste caused by the extensive usage of face masks during COVID‐19 pandemic has become a severe threat to natural environment and ecosystem. Herein, an eco‐friendly approach to repurpose face mask waste for clean water production via solar thermal evaporation is proposed. By taking advantage of its interwind structure, face mask holds the promise to be an ideal candidate material for constructing photothermal evaporator. In‐situ surface modifications are performed successively with polyvinyl alcohol and polypyrrole to improve its wettability and solar absorption (97%). The obtained face mask‐based evaporator achieves significantly enhanced solar efficiency (91.5%) and long‐term salt‐rejection stability. The harvested clean water befits plant growing to enable farming on sea surface. A floating photothermal evaporation prototype is then developed to demonstrate autonomous solar ocean farming, with plants successfully cultivated over time. As such, the proposed strategy provides a promising solution towards ecological sustainability by tapping multiple benefits.

Abstract Ovarian cancer is the first leading cause of death in gynecological cancers. The continuous survival and metastasis of cancer cells are the main causes of death and poor prognosis in patients with ovarian cancer. Berberine is an effective component extracted from the rhizomes of coptis chinensis and phellodendron chinensis. In our study, we aim to explore the molecular mechanism underlying the regulation of proliferation, migration and invasion by berberine in ovarian cancer cells. CCK8 assay was used for detection of proliferative capacity of SKOV3 and 3AO cells. Wound healing assay was used to estimate cell migration and transwell assay was used to assess cell invasion. The mRNA expression of miR-145 and MMP16 were examined by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). The protein level of MMP16 was detected by western blot analysis. In addition, luciferase reporter assays were used to demonstrate MMP16 was a target of miR-145. The results demonstrated berberine inhibited proliferation, migration and invasion, promoted miR-145 expression, and decreased MMP16 expression in SKOV3 and 3AO cells. MMP16 was a target of miR-145. Moreover, downregulation of MMP16 contributed to the inhibition of proliferation, migration and invasion by berberine. Together, our results revealed that berberine inhibited proliferation, migration and invasion through miR-145/MMP16 in SKOV3 and 3AO cells, highlighting the potentiality of berberine to be used as a therapeutic agent for ovarian cancer.

Elsinoë ampelina is an ascomycetous fungus that causes grape anthracnose, a potentially devastating disease worldwide. In this study, a dual RNA-seq analysis was used to simultaneously monitor the fungal genes related to pathogenesis and grape genes related to defense during the interaction at 2, 3, 4, and 5 days postinoculation. Consistent with their potential roles in pathogenicity, genes for carbohydrate-active enzymes, secondary metabolite synthesis, pathogen-host interaction, and those encoding secreted proteins are upregulated during infection. Based on Agrobacterium tumefaciens–mediated transient assays in Nicotiana benthamiana, we further showed that eight and nine candidate effectors, respectively, suppressed BAX- and INF1-mediated programmed cell death. The host response was characterized by the induction of multiple defense systems against E. ampelina, including synthesis of phenylpropanoids, stilbenes, and terpenoid biosynthesis, cell-wall modifications, regulation by phytohormones, and expression of defense-related genes. Together, these findings offer new insights into molecular mechanisms underlying the grape–E. ampelina interaction.

Abstract Higher mortality in asthmatics has been shown previously. However, evidence on different asthma phenotypes on long-term mortality risk is limited. The aim was to evaluate the impact of asthma phenotypes on mortality in general population. Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2001–2002 to 2013–2014 linked mortality files through December 31, 2015, were used (N = 37,015). Cox proportional hazards regression was used to estimate the risk of all-cause and cause-specific mortality adjusting for sociodemographic characteristics, smoking, body mass index, and chronic conditions. During the mean follow-up time of 7.5 years, 4326 participants died from a variety of causes. Current asthma, but not former asthma was associated with increased all-cause mortality (current asthma: HR = 1.37; 95% CI 1.20–1.58; Former asthma: HR = 0.93; 95% CI 0.73–1.18); as well as mortality from cardiovascular disease (HRCurrent = 1.41; 95% CI 1.08–1.85) and chronic lower respiratory diseases (HRCurrent = 3.17; 95% CI 1.96–5.14). In addition, we found that the HR for cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality was slightly greater in people with childhood-onset asthma than those with adult-onset asthma. The HR for chronic lower respiratory diseases (CLRD) mortality was greater in people with adult-onset asthma than those with childhood-onset asthma. However, the differences were not statistically significant. Our study suggested that current asthma but not former asthma was associated with increased all-cause, CLRD and CVD mortality. Future well-designed studies with larger sample are required to demonstrate the association and clarify the potential mechanisms involved.

Abstract The only available option to treat radiation-induced hematopoietic syndrome is allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation, a therapy unavailable to many patients undergoing treatment for malignancy, which would also be infeasible in a radiological disaster. Stromal cells serve as critical components of the hematopoietic stem cell niche and are thought to protect hematopoietic cells under stress. Prior studies that have transplanted mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) without co-administration of a hematopoietic graft have shown underwhelming rescue of endogenous hematopoiesis and have delivered the cells within 24 h of radiation exposure. Herein, we examine the efficacy of a human bone marrow-derived MSC therapy delivered at 3 h or 30 h in ameliorating radiation-induced hematopoietic syndrome and show that pancytopenia persists despite MSC therapy. Animals exposed to radiation had poorer survival and experienced loss of leukocytes, platelets, and red blood cells. Importantly, mice that received a therapeutic dose of MSCs were significantly less likely to die but experienced equivalent collapse of the hematopoietic system. The cause of the improved survival was unclear, as complete blood counts, splenic and marrow cellularity, numbers and function of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells, and frequency of niche cells were not significantly improved by MSC therapy. Moreover, human MSCs were not detected in the bone marrow. MSC therapy reduced crypt dropout in the small intestine and promoted elevated expression of growth factors with established roles in gut development and regeneration, including PDGF-A, IGFBP-3, IGFBP-2, and IGF-1. We conclude that MSC therapy improves survival not through overt hematopoietic rescue but by positive impact on other radiosensitive tissues, such as the intestinal mucosa. Collectively, these data reveal that MSCs could be an effective countermeasure in cancer patients and victims of nuclear accidents but that MSCs alone do not significantly accelerate or contribute to recovery of the blood system.

The European grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) is one of the world’s most widely cultivated and economically important fruit crops. Seedless fruits are particularly desired for table grapes, with seedlessness resulting from stenospermocarpy being an important goal for cultivar improvement. The establishment of an RNA in situ hybridisation (ISH) system for grape berries and ovules is, therefore, important for understanding the molecular mechanisms of ovule abortion in stenospermocarpic seedless cultivars. We improved RNA in situ hybridisation procedures for developing berries and ovules by targeting two transcription factor genes, VvHB63 and VvTAU, using two seeded varieties, ‘Red Globe’ and ‘Pinot Noir’, and two seedless cultivars, ‘Flame Seedless’ and ‘Thompson Seedless’. Optimisation focused on the time of proteinase K treatment, probe length, probe concentration, hybridisation temperature and post-hybridisation washing conditions. The objectives were to maximise hybridisation signals and minimise background interference, while still preserving tissue integrity. For the target genes and samples tested, the best results were obtained with a pre-hybridisation proteinase K treatment of 30 min, probe length of 150 bp and concentration of 100 ng/mL, hybridisation temperature of 50 °C, three washes with 0.2× saline sodium citrate (SSC) solution and blocking with 1% blocking reagent for 45 min during the subsequent hybridisation. The improved ISH system was used to study the spatiotemporal expression patterns of genes related to ovule development at a microscopic level.

Abstract Background Histone modification genes (HMs) play potential roles in plant growth and development via influencing gene expression and chromatin structure. However, limited information is available about HMs genes in grapes (Vitis vinifera L.). Results Here, we described detailed genome-wide identification of HMs gene families in grapevine. We identified 117 HMs genes in grapevine and classified these genes into 11 subfamilies based on conserved domains and phylogenetic relationships with Arabidopsis. We described the genes in terms of their chromosomal locations and exon-intron distribution. Further, we investigated the evolutionary history, gene ontology (GO) analysis, and syntenic relationships between grapes and Arabidopsis. According to results 21% HMs genes are the result of duplication (tandem and segmental) events and all the duplicated genes have negative mode of selection. GO analysis predicted the presence of HMs proteins in cytoplasm, nucleus, and intracellular organelles. According to seed development expression profiling, many HMs grapevine genes were differentially expressed in seeded and seedless cultivars, suggesting their roles in seed development. Moreover, we checked the response of HMs genes against powdery mildew infection at different time points. Results have suggested the involvement of some genes in disease resistance regulation mechanism. Furthermore, the expression profiles of HMs genes were analyzed in response to different plant hormones (Abscisic acid, Jasmonic acid, Salicylic acid, and Ethylene) at different time points. All of the genes showed differential expression against one or more hormones. Conclusion VvHMs genes might have potential roles in grapevine including seed development, disease resistance, and hormonal signaling pathways. Our study provides first detailed genome-wide identification and expression profiling of HMs genes in grapevine.

In order to improve the group animation motion capture effect and enhance the design technology of group animation, this paper studies the method of group animation motion capture combined with virtual reality technology. This paper constructs a crowd motion capture system based on virtual reality technology and describes the attributes by organizing crowd profiles of different levels and structures. Moreover, this paper conducts collaborative modeling of multiple attributes and constructs a model based on structured interactive attributes. The strength of the model is that it takes into account scene scale, chaos, and crowding properties to effectively characterize the potential interactions of group movement patterns. Combined with the simulation research, it can be seen that the group animation motion capture method based on virtual reality technology proposed in this paper can play an important role in group animation motion capture and animation design.

Abstract Background Liver is one of the most common organs involved by metastatic neoplasms. In addition, a number of primary tumors can arise in the liver. Fine needle biopsy (FNB) is the most commonly used method for diagnosis of liver masses. Not much literature is available during the past 10 years about FNB of liver tumors. All large studies were performed more than 15 years ago. With the introduction of new disease entities, new tumor classification systems, and new diagnostic methods, updated documentation of FNB of liver neoplasms is much needed. Methods Liver FNB cases that were diagnosed as “Positive for Malignancy” between 2010 and 2018 were retrieved from the cytopathology database in our institution. Patient medical records, cytopathology and surgical pathology reports, and slides from selected cases were retrieved and reviewed. Results Over 30 different types of malignant tumors were identified in 624 malignant FNB cases, with the most common tumors being metastatic colorectal and pancreatic adenocarcinomas. Rare tumors include EBV-positive leiomyosarcoma, mesothelioma, and paraganglioma, among others. A subset of patients presented with widespread metastases involving liver with no known history. Identifying the primary sites in those cases can be challenging. We also found that in our practice, a significant number of hepatocellular carcinoma were diagnosed by FNB in recent years. Conclusions A tremendous variety of neoplasms can occur in liver. Accurate diagnosis is essential for proper patient management. Familiarization with morphological features and judicious usage of ancillary studies are essential for accurate diagnosis.

Abstract Background The homeobox transcription factor has a diversity of functions during plant growth and development process. Previous transcriptome analyses of seed development in grape hybrids suggested that specific homeodomain transcription factors are involved in seed development in seedless cultivars. However, the molecular mechanism of homeobox gene regulating seed development in grape is rarely reported. Results Here, we report that the grapevine VvHB58 gene, encoding a homeodomain-leucine zipper (HD-Zip I) transcription factor, participates in regulating fruit size and seed number. The VvHB58 gene was differentially expressed during seed development between seedless and seeded cultivars. Subcellular localization assays revealed that the VvHB58 protein was located in the nucleus. Transgenic expression of VvHB58 in tomato led to loss of apical dominance, a reduction in fruit pericarp expansion, reduced fruit size and seed number, and larger endosperm cells. Analysis of the cytosine methylation levels within the VvHB58 promoter indicated that the differential expression during seed development between seedless and seeded grapes may be caused by different transcriptional regulatory mechanisms rather than promoter DNA methylation. Measurements of five classic endogenous hormones and expression analysis of hormone-related genes between VvHB58 transgenic and nontransgenic control plants showed that expression of VvHB58 resulted in significant changes in auxin, gibberellin and ethylene signaling pathways. Additionally, several DNA methylation-related genes were expressed differentially during seed development stages in seedless and seeded grapes, suggesting changes in methylation levels during seed development may be associated with seed abortion. Conclusion VvHB58 has a potential function in regulating fruit and seed development by impacting multiple hormonal pathways. These results expand understanding of homeodomain transcription factors and potential regulatory mechanism of seed development in grapevine, and provided insights into molecular breeding for grapes.

The sparsity regularization based on the L1 norm can significantly stabilize the solution of the ill-posed sparsity inversion problem, e.g., azimuth super-resolution of radar forward-looking imaging, which can effectively suppress the noise and reduce the blurry effect of the convolution kernel. In practice, the total variation (TV) and TV-sparsity (TVS) regularizations based on the L1 norm are widely adopted in solving the ill-posed problem. Generally, however, the existence of bias is ignored, which is incomplete in theory. This paper places emphasis on analyzing the partially biased property of the L1 norm. On this basis, we derive the partially bias-corrected solution of TVS and TV, which improves the rigor of the theory. Lastly, two groups of experimental results reflect that the proposed methods with partial bias correction can preserve higher quality than those without bias correction. The proposed methods not only distinguish the adjacent targets, suppress the noise, and preserve the shape and size of targets in visual terms. Its improvement of Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio, Structure-Similarity, and Sum-Squared-Errors assessment indexes are overall 2.15%, 1.88%, and 4.14%, respectively. As such, we confirm the theoretical rigor and practical feasibility of the partially bias-corrected solution with sparsity regularization based on the L1 norm.

Owing to a series of air pollution prevention and control policies, China’s PM2.5 pollution has greatly improved; however, the long-term spatial contiguous products that facilitate the analysis of the distribution and variation of PM2.5 pollution are insufficient. Due to the limitations of missing values in aerosol optical depth (AOD) products, the reconstruction of full-coverage PM2.5 concentration remains challenging. In this study, we present a two-stage daily adaptive modeling framework, based on machine learning, to solve this problem. We built the annual models in the first stage, then daily models were constructed in the second stage based on the output of the annual models, which incorporated the parameter and feature adaptive tuning strategy. Within this study, PM2.5 concentrations were adaptively modeled and reconstructed daily based on the multi-angle implementation of atmospheric correction (MAIAC) AOD products and other ancillary data, such as meteorological factors, population, and elevation. Our model validation showed excellent performance with an overall R2 = 0.91 and RMSE = 9.91 μg/m3 for the daily models, along with the site-based cross-validation R2s and RMSEs of 0.86–0.87 and 12–12.33 μg/m3; these results indicated the reliability and feasibility of the proposed approach. The daily full-coverage PM2.5 concentrations at 1 km resolution across China during the Three-Year Blue-Sky Action Plan were reconstructed in this study. We analyzed the distribution and variations of reconstructed PM2.5 at three different time scales. Overall, national PM2.5 pollution has significantly improved with the annual average concentration dropping from 33.67–28.03 μg/m3, which demonstrated that air pollution control policies are effective and beneficial. However, some areas still have severe PM2.5 pollution problems that cannot be ignored. In conclusion, the approach proposed in this study can accurately present daily full-coverage PM2.5 concentrations and the research outcomes could provide a reference for subsequent air pollution prevention and control decision-making.

Abstract Background/Aim There is no standard salvage chemotherapy for metastatic periampullary adenocarcinoma and duodenal adenocarcinoma and the prognosis of those who fail oxaliplatin, irinotecan, and 5FU is dismal. We examined nanoparticle albumin‐bound paclitaxel (nab‐paclitaxel) as salvage therapy for these two malignancies. Methods Patients who failed oxaliplatin, irinotecan, and 5FU and whose archival tumors stained immunohistochemical (IHC) tumor positive for CK7 or MUC1 received nab‐paclitaxel and gemcitabine therapy with or without cisplatin. Results Three patients, 2 with metastatic ampullary adenocarcinoma and 1 with duodenal adenocarcinoma with positive IHC staining for CK7 or MUC1 who failed 2 lines of chemotherapy with oxaliplatin, irinotecan, and 5FU received nab‐paclitaxel and gemcitabine with or without cisplatin. All achieved excellent tumor response on CT scans with marked falls in tumor markers CA19‐9 and CEA as well as ≥1 year of progression‐free survival. All 3 have continued to survive 2‐3 years since diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic adenocarcinoma. Conclusions Nab‐paclitaxel plus gemcitabine with or without cisplatin should be investigated as a standard‐of‐care chemotherapy regimen for patients with ampullary adenocarcinoma and duodenal adenocarcinoma.

The Taklimakan Desert located in China is the second-largest shifting sand desert in the world and is known for its harsh conditions. Types of γ-rays or UV radiation-resistant bacterial strains have been isolated from this desert. However, there is no information regarding the proportions of the radiation-resistant strains in the total culturable microbes. We isolated 352 bacterial strains from nine sites across the Taklimakan Desert from north to south. They belong to Actinobacteria, Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, and Bacteroidetes. The phylum Actinobacteria was the most predominant in abundance and Firmicutes had the highest species richness. Bacteroidetes had the lowest abundance and was found in four sites only, while the other three phyla were found in every site but with different distribution profiles. After irradiating with 1000 J/m2 and 6000 J/m2 UV-C, the strains with survival rates higher than 10% occupied 72.3% and 36.9% of all culturable bacteria, respectively. The members from Proteobacteria had the highest proportions, with survival rates higher than 10%. After radiation with 10 kGy γ-rays, Kocuria sp. TKL1057 and Planococcus sp. TKL1152 showed higher radiation-resistant capabilities than Deinococcus radiodurans R1. Besides obtaining several radiation-resistant extremophiles, this study measured the proportions of the radiation-resistant strains in the total culturable microbes for the first time. This study may help to better understand the origin of radioresistance, especially by quantitatively comparing proportions of radiation-resistant extremophiles from different environments in the future.

Background/Aims: Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is one of the key mechanisms mediating cancer progression. Snail1 has a pivotal role in the regulation of EMT, involving the loss of E-cadherin and concomitant upregulation of vimentin, among other biomarkers. We have found FSCN1 promoted EMT in ovarian cancer cells, but the precise mechanism of FSCN1 in EMT process has not been clearly elucidated. Methods: The levels of FSCN1 and snail1 were determined in epithelial ovarian cancer(EOC) specimen and in ovarian cancer cells by RT-qPCR. The changes of EMT makers and effects on snail1 by FSCN1 were examined by overexpression or depletion of FSCN1 in EOC cells by RT-qPCR and western blotting. The invasiveness of the FSCN1-modified EOC cells was examined in transwell assay. Co-immunoprecipitation (IP) was performed to detect the interaction between snail1 and FSCN1 in EOC cells. Results: We found FSCN1 and snail1 significantly increased in EOC, and especially in EOC with metastasis. FSCN1 was positively correlated with snail1 expression at the cellular/histological levels. Moreover, we further showed that FSCN1 physiologically interacted with and increased the levels of snail1 to promote ovarian cancer cell EMT. Conclusion: FSCN1 promote EMT through snail1 in ovarian cancer cells. FSCN1 is an attractive novel target for inhibiting invasion and metastasis of EOC cells.

Chelate induction of organic acids has been recognized to enhance metal uptake and translocation in plants, but the underlying mechanism remains unclear. In this study, seedlings of Salix variegata were hydroponically exposed to the combinations of Cd (0 and 50 μM) and three exogenous organic acids (100 μM of citric, tartaric, or malic acid). Plant biomass, antioxidant enzymes, non-protein thiol compounds (NPT) content, and the expression of candidate genes associated with Cd accumulation and tolerance were determined. Results showed that Cd significantly inhibited plant biomass but stimulated the activity of antioxidant enzymes in the roots and leaves, while the lipid peroxidation increased as well. Respective addition of three organic acids greatly enhanced plant resistance to oxidative stress and reduced the lipid peroxidation induced by Cd, with the effect of malic acid showing greatest. The addition of organic acids also significantly increased the content of glutathione in the root, further improving the antioxidant capacity and potential of phytochelatin biosynthesis. Moreover, Cd induced the expression level of candidate genes in roots of S. variegata. The addition of three organic acids not only promoted the expression of candidate genes but also drastically increased Cd accumulation in S. variegata. In summary, application of citric, tartaric, or malic acid alleviated Cd-imposed toxicity through the boost of enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants and candidate gene expression, while their effects on Cd tolerance and accumulation of S. variegata differed.

Objective Excessive inflammatory responses in the endocardium are related to progression of infectious endocarditis. This study aimed to investigate whether (Z)-7,4'-dimethoxy-6-hydroxy-aurone-4-O-β-glucopyranoside (DHAG), a compound isolated from the endophytic fungus Penicillium citrinum of Bruguiera gymnorrhiza , could attenuate cell damage caused by lipoteichoic acid (LTA) in embryonic rat heart cells (H9c2). Methods LTA-induced cell damage occurred in H9c2 cells and the protective effects of DHAG at different concentrations (1–10 µM) were assessed. Indicators of oxidative stress and inflammatory responses in H9c2 cells were measured. Results DHAG (1–10 µM) significantly attenuated LTA-induced damage in H9c2 cells, as evidenced by increased cell viability and mitochondrial membrane potential, decreased cytochrome c release and DNA fragmentation, inhibition of caspase-3 and -9 activity, and altered expression of apoptosis-related proteins. DHAG also decreased oxidative stress by increasing protein expression of nuclear factor (erythroid-derived 2)-like 2 (Nrf2). Furthermore, DHAG inhibited inflammatory responses by decreasing protein expression of nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) and mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs). Conclusion DHAG exerted protective effects against LTA-induced cell damage, at least partially by decreasing oxidative stress and inhibiting inflammatory responses. Our results provide a scientific rational for developing DHAG as a therapy against infectious endocarditis.

The utilization of desert sand for making ceramsite lightweight aggregate concrete is proposed to make full use of local natural resources in the development of a new type of lightweight and load-bearing wall material with good energy conservation, waste utilization, and thermal insulation performances. An orthogonal test was conducted to analyze the effects of the water-binder ratio, sand ratio, desert sand substitution rate, and fly ash content on the slump, apparent density, and tube crushing strength of desert sand ceramsite lightweight aggregate concrete. Thus, the optimal mixture ratio of the desert sand ceramsite concrete was obtained for the LC20 and LC25 strength grades. Based on two reasonable mixture ratios, the physical and mechanical properties of the desert sand ceramsite concrete were investigated. The results revealed that the water-binder ratio, sand ratio, and desert sand substitution rate were the main influencing factors, and the influence law is essentially consistent with that of ordinary desert sand concrete. Based on the reasonable substitution rate of desert sand, the main physical and mechanical properties of the desert sand ceramsite lightweight aggregate concrete, such as the tube crushing strength, tensile strength, and thermal conductivity, satisfied the requirements of the Chinese code’s specifications. In summary, desert sand can replace ordinary sand in ceramsite lightweight aggregate concrete for the production of new lightweight and load-bearing wall materials.

Genes of the plant-specific YABBY transcription factor family have various roles, including lateral organ development, establishment of dorsoventral polarity, and response to abiotic stress. In this study, we carried out a genomic census of YABBY genes in grapevine (Vitis vinifera) and characterized their expression pattern during ovule development. We identified seven YABBY genes and classified them into five subfamilies, based on peptide sequence, similarity of exon–intron structure and composition of peptide sequence motifs. Analysis of YABBY gene expression in various grapevine structures and organs suggested that these genes function in diverse aspects of development and physiology. Analysis of expression during ovule development in four cultivars showed that one gene, VvYABBY4, was preferentially expressed during the period of ovule abortion in seedless cultivars. Transgenic expression of VvYABBY4 in tomato conferred reduced plant stature, dark green leaves, elongated pistil, and reduced size of fruit and seeds. Reduced seed size was associated with smaller endosperm cells. Expression of VvYABBY4 also affected expression of numerous tomato genes with presumed roles in seed development. These data suggest the potential for VvYABBY4 to influence seed development in grapevine, which may impact seedless grape breeding.

ObjectivesExamination of the prevalence and patterns of multimorbidity among the elderly in China.DesignCross-sectional study.SettingMore than 10 000 households in 28 of the 34 provinces of mainland China.Participants11 707 Chinese adults aged 60 and over.Primary outcome measuresPrevalence and patterns of multimorbidity among the participants. Relative risks were calculated to estimate the probability of up to 14 chronic conditions coexisting with each other. Observed-to-expected (O/E) ratios were used to analyse the patterns of multimorbidity.ResultsMultimorbidity was present in 43.6% of respondents from the sample population, with women having the greater prevalence compared with men. There were 804 different comorbidity combinations identified, including 76 dyad combinations and 169 triad combinations. The top 10 morbidity dyads and triads accounted for 69.01% and 47.05% of the total dyad and triad combinations observed, respectively. Among the 14 chronic conditions included in the study, asthma, stroke, heart attack and six other chronic conditions were the main components of multimorbidity due to their high relative risk ratios. The most frequently occurring clusters with higher O/E ratios were stroke along with emotional, nervous, or psychiatric problems; memory-related diseases together emotional, nervous, or psychiatric problems; and memory-related diseases and asthma accompanied by chronic lung diseases and asthma.ConclusionsThe results of this study highlight the high prevalence of multimorbidity in the elderly population in China. Further studies are required to understand the aetiology of multimorbidity, and future primary healthcare policies should be made while taking multimorbidity into consideration.

Background: The purpose of this study is to elucidate mechanism(s) by which the orally active PGI2 analog, Beraprost (BPS), ameliorates pulmonary hypertension (PH). Prostaglandins are an important treatment for PH. Mechanisms of their action are not fully elucidated in relation to receptor subtype and effects on O2 sensitive Kv channels.Methods: Distal (3rd order and beyond) pulmonary arteries from chronically hypoxic rats and from humans with established PH were studied. Measurements included pulmonary haemodynamics and histology, vascular reactivity, prostanoid receptor expression and activity of the O2 sensitive Kv channels.Results: Prostacyclin receptor (IP), prostaglandin receptor E3 (EP3) and prostaglandin receptor E4 (EP4) are the main pulmonary artery receptor subtypes in both rat and human pulmonary arteries. Circulating levels of PGI2 and PGE2 were reduced in PH. PH was also associated with reduced receptor expression of IP but not of EP4. The effects on IP expression were overcome with BPS. Dilatory responses in PH to BPS were reduced in the presence of EP4 blockade. Expression and activity of oxygen sensitive Kv channels were reduced in pulmonary artery smooth muscle cell from rats with PH and humans with PAH and were also overcome by administration of BPS. Effects of BPS on oxygen sensitive Kv channels were reduced in the presence of EP4 blockade implicating the EP4 receptor, as well as the IP receptor, in mediating BPS effects.Conclusion: Reduced expression of pulmonary IP receptors and reduced activity of O2 sensitive Kv channels are found in PH in both humans and rats. The orally active prostacyclin analogue, BPS, is able to reverse these changes, partly through binding to the EP4 receptor.

The detoxified beta1–epsilon (β1–ϵ) toxin protein of Clostridium perfringens type B provides protection from C. perfringens types B, C and D infections. Acetate is the primary by-product from the cell growth and expression of β1–ϵ protein. In the present study, the effects of pH and dissolved oxygen (DO) on the expression of β1--ϵ protein were investigated. Two-stage pH and DO control strategies were developed for the expression of β1–ϵ protein. The obtained results indicated that higher cell density and concentration of β1--ϵ protein, and lower accumulation of acetate were obtained when pH was maintained at a constant level of 6.5 (0–6 h) and 7.0 (6–16 h), and the DO level was maintained at 60% (0–6 h) and 30% (6–16 h). Furthermore, the impact of intermittent, DO feedback, pH feedback and glucose-stat feeding on the expression of β1–ϵ protein were studied. By using the DO feedback feeding, combined with the stage control of pH (6.5 for 0–6 h, 7.0 for 6–16 h) and DO (60% for 0–6 h, 30% for 6–16 h), the highest cell density of 2.045 (absorbance at 600 nm) and a β1–ϵ protein concentration of 63.24 mg/L were obtained, and the accumulation of acetate decreased to 0.872 g/L.

Many research groups in academia and industry are focusing on the performance improvement of electronic nose (E-nose) systems mainly involving three optimizations, which are sensitive material selection and sensor array optimization, enhanced feature extraction methods and pattern recognition method selection. For a specific application, the feature extraction method is a basic part of these three optimizations and a key point in E-nose system performance improvement. The aim of a feature extraction method is to extract robust information from the sensor response with less redundancy to ensure the effectiveness of the subsequent pattern recognition algorithm. Many kinds of feature extraction methods have been used in E-nose applications, such as extraction from the original response curves, curve fitting parameters, transform domains, phase space (PS) and dynamic moments (DM), parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC), energy vector (EV), power density spectrum (PSD), window time slicing (WTS) and moving window time slicing (MWTS), moving window function capture (MWFC), etc. The object of this review is to provide a summary of the various feature extraction methods used in E-noses in recent years, as well as to give some suggestions and new inspiration to propose more effective feature extraction methods for the development of E-nose technology.
