Search

The radioactivity background are among the most dangerous background for low energy neutrino analysis in Super-Kamiokande (SK), like the solar neutrino analysis. Among them, the main contribution is coming from $^{222}$Rn, which is spread in the detector's water due to the water source and to the photo multiplier (PMT) emanations. Up to now, its exact distribution in the detector was not known. Using our knowledge of the radon concentration in the detector water, and the SK-IV solar data, we developed a model of the radon distribution in the detector. The uncertainty on the Rn concentration associated with this model was estimated to be $\sim0.1$ mBq/m$^{3}$

International audience; We present the results of a search for the Diffuse Supernova Neutrino Background (DSNB) at Super-Kamiokande (SK) that incorporates $22.5\times2970$~kton.days of data from its fourth data-taking phase. Two analyses, with different energy regimes covering the 9.3$-$81.3~MeV antineutrino energy range, have been developed based on previous SK searches, with substantially improved background modeling and data reduction techniques. Moreover, a combined analysis of nearly 20 years of SK data (1996-2018) has been performed, with a 90\% C.L. sensitivity to the DSNB flux comparable to various DSNB predictions. No significant evidence for a DSNB signal has been observed, and both analyses set world-leading limits on the DSNB flux that can reach about $2.7\overline{\nu}_e$.cm$^{-2}$.s$^{-1}$ for a wide range of models.

Super-Kamiokande (SK) is a 50-kt water Cherenkov detector, instrumented with $\sim 13$k photo-multipliers and running since 1996. It is sensitive to neutrinos with energies ranging from 4.5 MeV to several TeV. A new framework has been developed for the follow-up of gravitational wave (GW) alerts issued by the LIGO-Virgo collaboration (LVC). Neutrinos are searched for, using a 1000-second time window centered on the alert time and in both SK low-energy and high-energy samples. Such observation can then be used to constrain the neutrino emission from the GW source. The significance of potential signals has been obtained by comparing neutrino direction with the localization of the GW. The computation of limits on incoming neutrino flux and on the total energy emitted in neutrinos by the source has been performed for the different neutrino flavors. The results using the LVC GWTC-2 catalog (covering O3a period) are presented, as well as the outlooks for the future real-time public release of follow-ups for the O4 period (in 2022) and beyond.

We place perturbative unitarity constraints on both the dimensionful and dimensionless parameters in the Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (NMSSM) Higgs Sector. These constraints, plus the requirement that the singlino and/or Higgsino constitutes at least part of the observed dark matter relic abundance, generate upper bounds on the Higgs, neutralino and chargino mass spectrum. Requiring higher-order corrections to be no more than 41% of the tree-level value, we obtain an upper bound of 20 TeV for the heavy Higgses and 12 TeV for the charginos and neutralinos outside defined fine-tuned regions. If the corrections are no more than 20% of the tree-level value, the bounds are 7 TeV for the heavy Higgses and 5 TeV for the charginos and neutralinos. In all, by using the NMSSM as a template, we describe a method which replaces naturalness arguments with more rigorous perturbative unitarity arguments to get a better understanding of when new physics will appear.

Dark matter that was once in thermal equilibrium with the Standard Model is generally prohibited from obtaining all of its mass from the electroweak phase transition. This implies a new scale of physics and mediator particles to facilitate dark matter annihilation. In this work, we focus on dark matter that annihilates through a generic gauge boson portal. We show how partial wave unitarity places upper bounds on the dark gauge boson, dark Higgs and dark matter masses. Outside of well-defined fine-tuned regions, we find an upper bound of 9 TeV for the dark matter mass when the dark Higgs and dark gauge bosons both facilitate the dark matter annihilations. In this scenario, the upper bound on the dark Higgs and dark gauge boson masses are 10 TeV and 16 TeV, respectively. When only the dark gauge boson facilitates dark matter annihilations, we find an upper bound of 3 TeV and 6 TeV for the dark matter and dark gauge boson, respectively. Overall, using the gauge portal as a template, we describe a method to not only place upper bounds on the dark matter mass but also on the new particles with Standard Model quantum numbers. We briefly discuss the reach of future accelerator, direct and indirect detection experiments for this class of models.

We examine a model with multiple scalar fields to see whether it is possible to reduce the fine- tuning of the SM Higgs mass without introducing low scale top partners. Our approach may be regarded as a generalization of the condition proposed by Veltman, who attempted to predict the Higgs mass using the criterion that the various low energy contributions to the quadratic divergence of the Higgs mass cancel. Although the Veltman condition predicts the wrong Higgs mass in the Standard Model, it can still be adapted to extended Higgs sectors. Furthermore, theories with additional Higgs bosons can lead to suppressed Yukawa couplings of the top quark to the 125 GeV Higgs, making the associated one-loop divergence smaller. Here, we review possible extensions of the Standard Model where the Veltman condition could be realized, and study in detail one minimal model with two extra scalar fields. For this model and for a cutoff of 5 TeV, we show that the overall fine-tuning can be considerably lowered without introducing low-scale Landau poles, albeit the Higgs sector will be strongly coupled at the cutoff. In thermal dark matter models, allowing the dark matter candidate to coannihilate with another particle can considerably loosen the relic density constraints on the dark matter mass. In particular, introducing a single strongly interacting coannihilation partner in a dark matter model can bring the upper bound on the dark sector energy scale from a few TeV up to about 10 TeV. While these energies are outside the LHC reach, a large part of the parameter space for such coannihilating models can be explored by future hadron colliders. In this context, it is essential to determine whether the current bounds on dark matter simplified models also hold in non-minimal scenarios. In this paper, we study extended models that include multiple coannihilation partners. We show that the relic density bounds on the dark matter mass in these scenarios are stronger than for the minimal models in most of the parameter space and that weakening these bounds requires sizable interactions between the different species of coannihilation partners. Furthermore, we discuss how these new interactions as well as the additional particles in the models can lead to stronger collider bounds, notably in jets plus missing transverse energy searches. New scalars from an extended Higgs sector could have weak scale masses and still have escaped detection. In a type I two Higgs doublet model, for instance, even the charged Higgs can be lighter than the top quark. Because electroweak production of these scalars is modest, the greatest opportunity for their detection might come from rare top decays. For mass hierarchies of the type ${m}_{t}g{m}_{{H}^{+}}g{m}_{{A}^{0},{H}^{0}}$, the natural signal can arise from top quark pair production, followed by the decay chain $t\ensuremath{\rightarrow}b{H}^{+}$, ${H}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{W}^{+(*)}{\ensuremath{\phi}}^{0}$, ${\ensuremath{\phi}}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}b\overline{b},{\ensuremath{\tau}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\tau}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$, where ${\ensuremath{\phi}}^{0}={A}^{0},{H}^{0}$. These final states largely overlap with those of the Standard Model $t\overline{t}{H}_{\mathrm{SM}}$ process, and therefore can potentially contaminate $t\overline{t}{H}_{\mathrm{SM}}$ searches. We demonstrate that existing $t\overline{t}{H}_{\mathrm{SM}}$ analyses can already probe light extended Higgs sectors, and we derive new constraints from their results. Furthermore, we note that existing excesses in $t\overline{t}{H}_{\mathrm{SM}}$ searches can be naturally explained by the contamination of rare top decays to new light Higgses. We discuss how to distinguish this signal from the Standard Model process.

We present analytical formulae for the Sommerfeld corrections to the annihilation of massive colored particles into quarks and gluons through the strong interaction. These corrections are essential to accurately compute the dark matter relic density for coannihilation with colored partners. Our formulae allow to compute the Sommerfeld effect, not only for the lowest term in the angular momentum expansion of the amplitude, but for all orders in the partial wave expansion. In particular, we carefully account for the effects of the spin of the annihilating particle on the symmetry of the two-particle wave function. This work focuses on strongly interacting particles of arbitrary spin in the triplet, sextet and octet color representations. For typical velocities during freeze-out, we find that including Sommerfeld corrections on the next-to-leading order partial wave leads to modifications of up to ten to twenty percent on the total annihilation cross section. Complementary to QCD, we generalize our results to particles charged under an arbitrary unbroken SU(N) gauge group, as encountered in dark glueball models. We perform a general study of the relic density and LHC constraints on simplified models where the dark matter coannihilates with a strongly interacting particle X. In these models, the dark matter depletion is driven by the self-annihilation of X to pairs of quarks and gluons through the strong interaction. The phenomenology of these scenarios therefore only depends on the dark matter mass and the mass splitting between dark matter and X as well as the quantum numbers of X. In this paper, we consider simplified models where X can be either a scalar, a fermion or a vector, as well as a color triplet, sextet or octet. We compute the dark matter relic density constraints taking into account Sommerfeld corrections and bound state formation. Furthermore, we examine the restrictions from thermal equilibrium, the lifetime of X and the current and future LHC bounds on X pair production. All constraints are comprehensively presented in the mass splitting versus dark matter mass plane. While the relic density constraints can lead to upper bounds on the dark matter mass ranging from 2 TeV to more than 10 TeV across our models, the prospective LHC bounds range from 800 to 1500 GeV. Simplified Models are a useful way to characterize new physics scenarios for the LHC. Particle decays are often represented using non-renormalizable operators that involve the minimal number of fields required by symmetries. Generalizing to a wider class of decay operators allows one to model a variety of final states. This approach, which we dub the $n$-body extension of Simplified Models, provides a unifying treatment of the signal phase space resulting from a variety of signals. In this paper, we present the first application of this framework in the context of multijet plus missing energy searches. The main result of this work is a global performance study with the goal of identifying which set of observables yields the best discriminating power against the largest Standard Model backgrounds for a wide range of signal jet multiplicities. Our analysis compares combinations of one, two and three variables, placing emphasis on the enhanced sensitivity gain resulting from non-trivial correlations. Utilizing boosted decision trees, we compare and classify the performance of missing energy, energy scale and energy structure observables. We demonstrate that including an observable from each of these three classes is required to achieve optimal performance. Simplified models of the dark matter (co)annihilation mechanism predict striking new collider signatures untested by current searches. These models, which were codified in the coannihilation codex, provide the basis for a dark matter (DM) discovery program at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) driven by the measured DM relic density. In this work, we study an exemplary model featuring $s$-channel DM coannihilation through a scalar diquark mediator as a representative case study of scenarios with strongly interacting coannihilation partners. We discuss the full phenomenology of the model, ranging from low energy flavor constraints, vacuum stability requirements, and precision Higgs effects to direct detection and indirect detection prospects. Moreover, motivated by the relic density calculation, we find significant portions of parameter space are compatible with current collider constraints and can be probed by future searches, including a proposed analysis for the novel signature of a dijet resonance accompanied by missing transverse energy (MET). Our results show that the $13$ TeV LHC with $100~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ luminosity should be sensitive to mediators as heavy as 1 TeV and dark matter in the 400--500 GeV range. The combination of searches for single and paired dijet peaks, non-resonant jets + MET excesses, and our novel resonant dijet + MET signature have strong coverage of the motivated relic density region, reflecting the tight connections between particles determining the dark matter abundance and their experimental signatures at the LHC., 35 pages, 9 figures

Dark matter that was once in thermal equilibrium with the Standard Model is generally prohibited from obtaining all of its mass from the electroweak or QCD phase transitions. This implies a new scale of physics and mediator particles needed to facilitate dark matter annihilations. In this work, we consider scenarios where thermal dark matter annihilates via scalar mediators that are colored and/or electrically charged. We show how partial wave unitarity places upper bounds on the masses and couplings on both the dark matter and mediators. To do this, we employ effective field theories with dark matter as well as three flavors of sleptons or squarks with minimum flavor violation. For Dirac (Majorana) dark matter that annihilates via mediators charged as left-handed sleptons, we find an upper bound around 45 TeV (7 TeV) for both the mediator and dark matter masses, respectively. These bounds vary as the square root of the number of colors times the number of flavors involved. Therefore the bounds diminish by root two for right handed selectrons. The bounds increase by root three and root six for right and left handed squarks, respectively. Finally, because of the interest in natural models, we also focus on an effective field theory with only stops. We find an upper bound around 32 TeV (5 TeV) for both the Dirac (Majorana) dark matter and stop masses. In comparison to traditional naturalness arguments, the stop bound gives a firmer, alternative expectation on when new physics will appear. Similar to naturalness, all of the bounds quoted above are valid outside of a defined fine-tuned regions where the dark matter can co-annihilate. The bounds in this region of parameter space can exceed the well-known bounds from Griest and Kamionkowski. We study the naturalness problem using a model independent bottom up approach by considering models where only the interaction terms needed to cancel the Higgs quadratic divergences are present. If quadratic divergences are canceled by terms linear in the Higgs field, then the collider phenomenology is well covered by current electroweakino and fourth generation searches. If quadratic divergences are canceled by terms bilinear in the Higgs field, then the signatures are highly dependent on the quantum numbers of the new particles. Precision Higgs measurements can reveal the presence of new particles with either vevs or Standard Model charges. If the new particles are scalar dark matter candidates, their direct and indirect detection signatures will be highly correlated and within the reach of XENON100 and Fermi. Observation at one of these experiments would imply observation at the other one. Observable LHC decay channels can also arise if the new particles mix with lighter states. This decay channel involves only the Higgs boson and not the gauge bosons. Observation of such decays would give evidence that the new particle is tied to the naturalness problem., 14 pages + appendix, journal version

We introduce a search technique that is sensitive to a broad class of signals with large final state multiplicities. Events are clustered into large radius jets and jet substructure techniques are used to count the number of subjets within each jet. The search consists of a cut on the total number of subjets in the event as well as the summed jet mass and missing energy. Two different techniques for counting subjets are described and expected sensitivities are presented for eight benchmark signals. These signals exhibit diverse phenomenology, including 2-step cascade decays, direct three body decays, and multi-top final states. We find improved sensitivity to these signals as compared to previous high multiplicity searches as well as a reduced reliance on missing energy requirements. We discuss the relevance of directional detection experiments in the post-discovery era and propose a method to extract the local dark matter phase space distribution from directional data. The first feature of this method is a parameterization of the dark matter distribution function in terms of integrals of motion, which can be analytically extended to infer properties of the global distribution if certain equilibrium conditions hold. The second feature of our method is a decomposition of the distribution function in moments of a model independent basis, with minimal reliance on the ansatz for its functional form. We illustrate our method using the Via Lactea II N-body simulation as well as an analytical model for the dark matter halo. We conclude that O(1000) events are necessary to measure deviations from the Standard Halo Model and constrain or measure the presence of anisotropies., 36 pages, 13 figures

This document proposes a collection of simplified models relevant to the design of new-physics searches at the LHC and the characterization of their results. Both ATLAS and CMS have already presented some results in terms of simplified models, and we encourage them to continue and expand this effort, which supplements both signature-based results and benchmark model interpretations. A simplified model is defined by an effective Lagrangian describing the interactions of a small number of new particles. Simplified models can equally well be described by a small number of masses and cross-sections. These parameters are directly related to collider physics observables, making simplified models a particularly effective framework for evaluating searches and a useful starting point for characterizing positive signals of new physics. This document serves as an official summary of the results from the "Topologies for Early LHC Searches" workshop, held at SLAC in September of 2010, the purpose of which was to develop a set of representative models that can be used to cover all relevant phase space in experimental searches. Particular emphasis is placed on searches relevant for the first ~50-500 pb-1 of data and those motivated by supersymmetric models. This note largely summarizes material posted at http://lhcnewphysics.org/, which includes simplified model definitions, Monte Carlo material, and supporting contacts within the theory community. We present a general classification of simplified models that lead to dark matter (DM) coannihilation processes of the form DM + X $\rightarrow$ SM$_1$ + SM$_2$, where X is a coannihilation partner for the DM particle and SM$_1$, SM$_2$ are Standard Model fields. Our classification also encompasses regular DM pair annihilation scenarios if DM and X are identical. Each coannhilation scenario motivates the introduction of a mediating particle M that can either belong to the Standard Model or be a new field, whereby the resulting interactions between the dark sector and the Standard Model are realized as tree-level and dimension-four couplings. We construct a basis of coannihilation models, classified by the $SU(3)_C\times SU(2)_L\times U(1)_Y$ quantum numbers of DM, X and M. Our main assumptions are that dark matter is an electrically neutral color singlet and that all new particles are either scalars, Dirac or Majorana fermions, or vectors. We illustrate how new scenarios arising from electroweak symmetry breaking effects can be connected to our electroweak symmetric simplified models. We offer a comprehensive discussion of the phenomenological features of our models, encompassing the physics of thermal freeze-out, direct and indirect detection constraints, and in particular searches at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Many novel signatures that are not covered in current LHC searches are emphasized, and new and improved LHC analyses tackling these signatures are proposed. We discuss how the coannihilation simplified models can be used to connect results from all classes of experiments in a straightforward and transparent way.
