Although the biodegradability of compostable bioplastic bags (CBBs) is well ascertained, concerns arise about the possibility of treating a massive quantity of compostable materials in composting facilities of all sizes and configurations. These concerns are even greater in small-scale composting where the biodegrading conditions may be milder that those in industrial composting. In this work, 7–15 lightweight CBBs were disposed of, together with organic food waste, in an electromechanical composter (EMC), every day for about 2 months. For the bulking agent, fragments and twigs of golden wattle wood were used instead of the recommended wood pellets. The composting process was carried out for 3 months in the EMC, and for further 4 months in a heap, in order to complete the maturation. During the process, critical issues in general, and any due to the presence of the CBBs, were reported: high temperatures, up to 72 °C, were constantly reached both in the ECM and in the heap, while critical anaerobic pockets were not detected. After 7 months, when the temperature and pH of the heap were equal to the ambient temperature and to 7.4, respectively, and were constant over time, the process was stopped and the compost produced underwent chemical, physical and biological analysis, in order to evaluate its quality. The CBBs did not produce any visual contamination of the final compost with bioplastic residues. Finally, all the stability, environmental and agronomic parameters were in compliance with the reference values established by law. This work shows how lightweight CBBs are perfectly managed by the EMC, at least with a CBB/organic waste mass ratio that is consistent with a normal use of CBBs as the collector of organic waste.

In this study we propose, a multi-step strategy of selection and characterization of long-term dataset of contaminant concentrations in different environmental matrices (i.e., water and sediment). Starting from a high quality and homogeneous dataset of chemical parameters, a selection of a usable refined dataset followed by statistical characterization and hazard assessment was performed. The database of chemical contamination data from monitoring activities in the coastal marine water area of the Campania Region (Italy) produced by the Regional Agency for Environmental Protection of Campania (ARPAC) between 2013 and 2019 was utilized. Descriptive and multivariate statistics were applied to the extracted data subset to describe spatial variability and to investigate the relationships between matrices and contaminants. In addition, the impact on the sediment matrix was considered using the contamination factor (Cf), the sediment quality guidelines (SQG), and the probability of exceedance (PoE) of given thresholds for metals and organic compounds. The results highlighted the main anthropogenic pressures between the Gulf of Pozzuoli and the Gulf of Napoli, and the potential hazard posed in particular by metals (i.e., Pb, C, and Hg), TBT, and PAHs. A wide range of As concentration along the Campania coastline and Ni occurrence in the southern part of the region, mainly attributable to geogenic origin, was also evidenced. This approach allows extracting new knowledge from large dataset systematically collected by ARPAC monitoring activity, to support possible actions of contamination control and mitigation.

The awareness of the plastic issue is rising in recent years. Our seas and coastal seawaters are investigated with the aim to evaluate the possible fate, behavior and the impact of these novel contaminants upon marine biota. In particular, benthic organisms are exposed to micro(nano)plastics that sink and accumulated on the seabed. Sea urchins can be prone to the plastic impact for all their lifespan with effect that can be extended upon the trophic cascade since their key role as grazer organisms. Moreover, they are largely used in the assessment of contaminant impact both as adult individuals and as early larval stages. This review analyzes the recent literature about the chemical and physical hazards posed by diverse polymers to sea urchins, in relation to their peculiar characteristics and to their size. The search was based on a query of the keyword terms: microplastic _ OR nanoplastic_AND Sea urchins in Web of Science and Google Scholar. The effects provoked by exposure of different sea urchin biological form are highlighted, considering both laboratory exposure and collection in real world. Additional focus has also been given upon the exposure methods utilized in laboratory test and in the existing limitations in the testing procedures. In conclusion, the micro(nano)plastics major impact seemed to be attributable to leaching compounds, however variability and lacking of realisms in the procedures do not allow a full understanding of the hazard posed by micro(nano)plastics for sea urchins. Finally, the work provides insights into the future research strategies to better characterize the actual risk for sea urchins.

The production of biodegradable plastics is considered to be a way to reduce plastic waste issue. Among others, oxo-degradant additives enable a faster degradation of plastics in the environment. However, the introduction of these new materials could provoke the release of substances potentially toxic in the environment. This work determined and compared the toxicity of leachates from various additivated polymers (polyethylene, PE; polypropylene, PP; polystyrene, PS) upon different test organisms: plants (Sorghum saccharatum, Lepidium sativum, Sinapis alba, and Vicia faba), crustacean (Daphnia magna), and luminescent bacteria (Vibrio fischeri). Daphnia magna survival was mainly affected by PS and PP leachates (72% and 61% effect, respectively) while PS notably reduced the reproduction rate. On plants, only PP exerted a negative effect (S. saccharatum IG% 32.4), while V. fischeri always showed values around 50%. The data integration, through the Toxicity Test Battery Integrated Index (TBI) approach, allowed to rank the leachates toxicity as PE > PS > PP. This result could be mainly ascribable to the highest metals content in PE since no difference with organic compounds analysis was evidenced. In conclusion, since the polymers exerted dissimilar toxicity, the additive could not be considered the sole responsible of the measured toxicity, but its role in the enhancement of the virgin polymers leachates effects can be solidly hypothesized.

The wide use of ZnO nanoparticles in a number of products implies an increasing release into the marine environment, resulting in the need to evaluate the potential effects upon organisms, and particularly phytoplankton, being at the base of the throphic chain. To this aim, dose-response curves for the green alga Tetraselmis suecica and the diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum derived from the exposure to nano ZnO (100 nm) were evaluated and compared with those obtained for bulk ZnO (200 nm) and ionic zinc. The toxic effects to both algae species were reported as no observable effect concentration (NOEC) of growth inhibition and as 1, 10, and 50% effect concentrations (EC1, EC10, and EC50). The toxicity decreased in the order nano ZnO > Zn2+ > bulk ZnO. EC50 values for nano ZnO were 3.91 [3.66-4.14] mg Zn/L towards the green microalgae and 1.09 [0.96-1.57] mg Zn/L towards the diatom, indicating a higher sensitivity of P. tricornutum. The observed diverse effects can be ascribed to the interaction occurring between different algae and ZnO particles. Due to algae motility, ZnO particles were intercepted in different phases of aggregation and sedimentation processes, while algae morphology and size can influence the level of entrapment by NP aggregates.This underlines the need to take into account the peculiarity of the biological system in the assessment of NP toxicity.

The increasing use of oxide nanoparticles (NPs) in commercial products has intensified the potential release into the aquatic environment where algae represent the basis of the trophic chain. NP effects upon algae population growth were indeed already reported in literature, but the concurrent effects at cellular and genomic levels are still largely unexplored.Our work investigates the genotoxic (by COMET assay) and cytotoxic effects (by qualitative ROS production and cell viability) of ZnO nanoparticles toward marine microalgae Dunaliella tertiolecta. A comparison at defined population growth inhibition levels (i.e. 50% Effect Concentration, EC50, and No Observed Effect Concentration, NOEC) with SiO2 and TiO2 genotoxic effects and previously investigated cytotoxic effects (Manzo et al., 2015) was performed in order to elucidate the possible diverse mechanisms leading to algae growth inhibition.After 72 h exposure, ZnO particles act firstly at the level of cell division inhibition (EC50: 2 mg Zn/L) while the genotoxic action is evident only starting from 5 mg Zn/L. This outcome could be ascribable mainly to the release of toxic ions from the aggregate of ZnO particle in the proximity of cell membrane.In the main, at EC50 and NOEC values for ZnO NPs showed the lowest cytotoxic and genotoxic effect with respect to TiO2 and SiO2. Based on Mutagenic Index (MI) the rank of toxicity is actually: TiO2 > SiO2 > ZnO with TiO2 and SiO2 that showed similar MI values at both NOEC and EC50 concentrations.The results presented herein suggest that up to TiO2 NOEC (7.5 mg/L), the algae DNA repair mechanism is efficient and the DNA damage does not result in an evident algae population growth inhibition. A similar trend for SiO2, although at lower effect level with respect to TiO2, is observable.The comparison among all the tested nanomaterial toxicity patterns highlighted that the algae population growth inhibition occurred through pathways specific for each NP also related to their different physicochemical behaviors in seawater. © 2016 Elsevier B.V..

Microplastics are defined as plastic fragments

Recently, China became one of the largest nanomaterial markets in the world. The wide use of ZnO nanoparticles in a number of products implies an increasing release in marine environment and consequently the evaluation of the potential effects upon marine organisms largely cultured in China for commercial purposes, such as invertebrate bivalves is a current need. To this aim, survival, bioaccumulation, and transcription pattern of key genes, p53, PDRP, SOD, CAT, and GST, involved in DNA damage/repair and antioxidation, in Mytilus galloprovincialis digestive gland, exposed to ZnO NPs ( ZnO NPs > ZnO bulk. The relative expression of investigated genes evidenced that distinct actions of apoptosis and antioxidation occurred in M. galloprovincialis exposed to ZnO NPs with a peculiar pattern dependent on exposure time and concentration. Application of the qRT-PCR technique revealed evidence of sensitivity to the nanomaterial since the first time of exposure.

Sunscreens represent one of the main sources of engineered TiO2 and ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) in coastal ecosystems, especially during the summer period. To understand the effective environmental impact of NPs in commercial sunscreens, this study assesses the effect of TiO2 and ZnO NPs extracted from three commercial products (S2; S10; S11) upon marine microalgae Dunaliella tertiolecta by evaluating its growth inhibition, oxidative stress and DNA damage. Algae were exposed to both the sunscreen formulations containing NPs and a sunscreen without NPs. Results showed that algae growth inhibition was affected by the extracted NPs (EC20 S2: 9.2 mg Ti L−1; EC20 S10: 0.49 mg Ti L−1; EC20 S11: 14 mg Ti L−1), and the algae was generally biostimulated by the sunscreen formulations, due to the presence of other components that could enhance algal growth. Among the sunscreens containing NPs, relevant effects, mainly as ROS production and DNA damage, were evidenced when both TiO2 and Zn were present (S10; S11). Moreover, lower effects were always observed for the sunscreens and the corresponding extracts, compared to the effects of industrial NPs. These findings suggest that the product formulation may mitigate toxic effects of NPs either by direct modification of properties or by providing organic and inorganic nutrients that biostimulate microalgae growth. The NPs extracted from sunscreens showed responses that cannot be predicted solely from the response of industrial nanoparticles, suggesting that the aging in sunscreens can influence the final toxicity of nanoparticles. In conclusion, the adverse effects of sunscreens upon microalgae could not be solely attributed to the NPs, but also to the combined action of multiple components. © The Royal Society of Chemistry.

Today nanoparticles (NPs) have many applications in commercial products due to their small size and peculiar properties that, conversely, make them potentially toxic for humans and the environment. ZnO NPs are largely used in many personal care products, such as sunscreens and cosmetics. In this study the cytotoxic effects of ZnO particles with different sizes (ZnO Bulk, > 100 nm; ZnO NPs, 100 nm and ZnO NPs, 14 nm) upon the first developmental stages of the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus, are evaluated. Morphological alterations are also assessed by embryotoxicity tests. The cytogenetic analysis highlighted that ZnO NPs interfere with cell cycle inducing a dose-dependent decrease of mitotic activity and chromosomal aberrations at higher concentrations (30 μM). Moreover, the larval development was affected by ZnO NPs 100 nm (EC50 = 0.46 [0.30–0.63] μM [Zn]) in a dose-dependent way. Size-dependent toxicity was instead not obtained for ZnO NPs. From our results could be highlighted that the presence of embryos, blocked in pre-larval stage, could be due to the induction of chromosome aberrations by ZnO particles, confirming that cytogenetic analyses allow evaluating possible NPs action mechanisms. © 2017 Elsevier B.V.

Dose response curve and population growth rate alterations of marine Chlorophyte Dunaliella tertiolecta derived from the exposure to ZnO nanoparticles were evaluated. Bulk ZnO and ionic zinc were also investigated for comparison. At the same time, the aggregation state and particle size distribution were monitored. The evaluated 50% effect concentration (EC50 1.94 [0.78–2.31] mg Zn L− 1) indicates that nano ZnO is more toxic than its bulk counterpart (EC50 3.57 [2.77–4.80] mg Zn L− 1). Cross-referencing the toxicity parameters calculated for ZnCl2 (EC50 0.65 [0.36–0.70] mg Zn L− 1) and the dissolution properties of the ZnO, it can be gathered that the higher toxicity of nano ZnO is most likely related to the peculiar physicochemical properties of the nanostate with respect to the bulk material. Furthermore growth rate of D. tertiolecta was significantly affected by nano ZnO exposure. Our findings suggest that the primary particle size of the dispersed particles affect the overall toxicity.

In the last years, applications for silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) continue to increase together with the concerns about their potential input and hazards in aquatic ecosystems, where microalgae are key organisms. The aim of the present study was to assess the relative sensitivity of three marine microalgae species with differences in cell wall composition/structure exposed to Poly N-vinyl-2-pirrolidone/Polyethyleneimine (PVP/PEI) coated 5 nm Ag NPs and uncoated 47 nm Ag NP. As limited attention has been paid to the role of coating agents in NP toxicity, the effect of PVP/PEI alone was also evaluated. After 72 h in artificial seawater, 47 nm Ag NPs formed around 1400 nm size aggregates while PVP/PEI coated 5 nm Ag NPs reached around 90 nm. Ag+ release in seawater was around 3% for 47 nm Ag NPs and 30% for PVP/PEI coated 5 nm Ag NPs. PVP/PEI coated 5 nm Ag NP aggregates entrapped the algal cells in a network of heteroaggregates, while uncoated 47 nm Ag NPs interacted to a lesser extent with algae. The concentration of PVP/PEI coated 5 nm Ag NPs that exerted the median effect (EC50) on algae growth pointed out differences in algae sensitivity: T. suecica was about 10 times more sensitive than I. galbana and P. tricornutum. Further, the coating agent alone was as toxic to algae as PVP/PEI coated 5 nm Ag NPs, suggesting that presence of the coating agent was the main driver of toxicity of coated NPs. Uncoated 47 nm Ag NPs instead, showed similar toxicity towards algae although P. tricornutum was slightly less sensitive than T. suecica and I. galbana, which agrees with the presence of a resistant silicified cell wall in the diatom. The present work demonstrates differences in sensitivity of three marine microalgae, possibly related to their cell surface and size characteristics. © 2016 Elsevier B.V.

Accumulated metals in soils negatively affect dwelling organisms. Earthworms, which are widespread and perform various essential functions, are able to accumulate metals that can damage the coelomic cells. The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect on Eisenia fetida lysosomal membrane stability both during and after copper exposure, and finally to link this to internal concentrations. E. fetida specimens were exposed to a reference soil and two Cu-spiked soils (35 and 350 mg kg −1 d.w.) for 14 days (uptake period) and then transferred into the reference soil for other 18 days (elimination period). After 3 days of uptake, internal Cu concentrations increased and were higher in the specimens exposed to soils spiked with 350 mg Cu kg −1 d.w. After 2 days of elimination, a strong decrease of internal Cu concentrations was always observed. The lysosomal membrane stability, measured as neutral red retention-times, was approximately 50 min for the earthworms exposed to the reference soils, whereas it decreased, at the end of the uptake period, to 21 and 13 min, respectively, for the organisms exposed to soils spiked with 35 and 350 mg Cu kg −1 d.w. A full recovery of the lysosomal membrane stability was reached after 14 and 18 days of the elimination period, respectively, for the organisms exposed to soils spiked with 35 and 350 mg Cu kg −1 d.w. The neutral-red assay would seem a good biomarker since the lysosomal membrane stability of E. fetida appeared to respond rapidly and strongly to soil copper contamination.

The aim of this work was to investigate the mixture toxicity of Irgarol (2-methylthio-4-t-butylamino-6-cyclopropylamino-s-triazine), Diuron (3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea), and copper upon the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus and to compare the observed data with the predictions derived from approaches of Concentration Addition (CA) and Independent Action (IA). Copper spermiotoxicity was more sensitive (EC50 = 0.018 mg/L) than embryotoxicity (EC50 = 0.046 mg/L). The offspring malformations were mainly P1 type (skeletal alterations) in both cases, probably because copper competes to fix Ca2+. Irgarol and Diuron toxicity has been previously investigated. EC50 mixture embryotoxicity showed an EC50 of 1.79 mg/L, whereas spermiotoxicity mixture effects were lower than 11%. Both CA and IA modeling approaches failed to predict accurately mixture toxicity. In this work, we evaluated the risk posed to aquatic organisms in the coastal waters of Albania and Apulia (Italy) by two priority pollutants (PPs), Irgarol 1051 and Diuron, used as biocides in antifouling paints on boat hulls. With this aim, we carried out an extensive 3-year monitoring in ports and marinas along the coasts of both countries, which showed a widespread occurrence of both PPs, with Irgarol 1051 concentrations usually being lower than the Diuron ones. The measured concentrations were compared with regulatory Environmental Quality Standards (EQS) (Directive 2008/105/EC) and used to perform a probabilistic Ecological Risk Assessment (ERA), for a thorough evaluation of the potential adverse effects upon marine ecosystem. Irgarol 1051 amounts above the Annual Average Concentration (AA-EQS, 2.5 ng/L) were often detected in Apulia and, less frequently, in Albania. Moreover, in Apulia, sometimes the Maximum Allowable Concentrations (MAC-EQS, 16 ng/L) was exceeded. In Apulia, where levels exceeded MAC/AA-EQS, ERA found not negligible probabilities of exceeding the toxicity level (6–18 %). A less critical situation was observed for Diuron whose levels were always below the MAC-EQS (1800 ng/L) in both countries and, in Albania, also below the AA-EQS (200 ng/L). On the other hand, in Apulia, this limit was exceeded in some locations. Correspondingly, ERA determined a not negligible risk in these sites (probability of exceedance 4–7 %).

Recently the potential environmental hazard of photovoltaic modules together with their management as waste has attracted the attention of scientists. Particular concern is aroused by the several metals contained in photovoltaic panels whose potential release in the environment were scarcely investigated. Here, for the first time, the potential environmental hazard of panels produced in the last 30 years was investigated through the assessment of up to 18 releasable metals. Besides, the corresponding ecotoxicological effects were also evaluated. Experimental data were compared with the current European and Italian law limits for drinking water, discharge on soil and landfill inert disposal in order to understand the actual pollution load. Results showed that less than 3% of the samples respected all law limits and around 21% was not ecotoxic. By considering the technological evolutions in manufacturing, we have shown that during the years crystalline silicon panels have lower tendency to release hazardous metals with respect to thin film panels. In addition, a prediction of the amounts of lead, chromium, cadmium and nickel releasable from next photovoltaic waste was performed. The prevision up to 2050 showed high amounts of lead (30 t) and cadmium (2.9 t) releasable from crystalline and thin film panels respectively. © 2015 Elsevier B.V.

Nanoparticles (NPs) are widely used in many industrial applications. NP fate and behavior in seawater are a very important issue for the assessment of their environmental impact and potential toxicity. In this study, the toxic effects of two nanomaterials, silicon dioxide (SiO2) and titanium dioxide (TiO2) NPs with similar primary size (~20 nm), on marine microalgae Dunaliella tertiolecta were investigated and compared. The dispersion behavior of SiO2 and TiO2 NPs in seawater matrix was investigated together with the relative trend of the exposed algal population growth. SiO2 aggregates rapidly reached a constant size (600 nm) irrespective of the concentration while TiO2 NP aggregates grew up to 4 ± 5 μm. The dose–response curve and population growth rate alteration of marine alga D. tertiolecta were evaluated showing that the algal population was clearly affected by the presence of TiO2 NPs. These particles showed effects on 50 % of the population at 24.10 [19.38–25.43] mg L−1 (EC50) and a no observed effect concentration (NOEC) at 7.5 mg L−1. The 1 % effect concentration (EC1) value was nearly above the actual estimated environmental concentration in the aquatic environment. SiO2 NPs were less toxic than TiO2 for D. tertiolecta, with EC50 and NOEC values one order of magnitude higher. The overall toxic action seemed due to the contact between aggregates and cell surfaces, but while for SiO2 a direct action upon membrane integrity could be observed after the third day of exposure, TiO2 seemed to exert its toxic action in the first hours of exposure, mostly via cell entrapment and agglomeration. © 2015, Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

The lizard Podarcis shows an ovarian annual cycle with three to four ovulatory waves between April and July (reproductive period). In August to September, a refractory stage occurs, followed by a nonreproductive period (October to March), during which the oocytes undergo slow growth and prepare themselves for vitellogenesis and ovulation. In the reproductive period, only a certain number of oocytes start growing, giving rise to a follicular hierarchy, which is controlled by still unknown mechanisms. In the present paper, immunoreactive inhibin was detected in previtellogenetic follicles of the reproductive period, and in particular, in the pyriform cells of the follicular epithelium. As the follicle grew and the pyriform cells disappeared, immunostaining shifted to the oocyte cytoplasm. The smaller follicles did not show any immunoreactivity. In the nonreproductive period, no follicles were labeled. We conclude that in the reproductive period, inhibin characterizes the follicles destined to ovulation and might be one of the main factors controlling follicular hierarchy.

The CARISMA project (characterization and ecological risk analysis of antifouling biocides in the Southern Adriatic Sea) aims to appraise the quality of the Southern Adriatic Sea between Italy (Apulia region) and Albania and, in particular, the impact due to the use of biocidal antifouling coatings. Under this project, a preliminary survey at the main hot spots of contamination (e.g. ports and marinas) was conducted at the end of the nautical season in 2012. Chemical seawater analyses were complemented with ecotoxicological assays and the results were analyzed by principal component analysis (PCA). As expected, PCA splits the Albanian and Italian ports, according to the different degrees of contamination indicated for the two countries by the experimental data, highlighting the most critical situation in one port of Apulia. In addition, in order to assess the potential adverse ecological effects posed by antifouling agents (i.e. tributyltin (TBT)-irgarol-diuron) on non-target marine organisms, hazard quotients (HQ) were calculated. The results showed a low risk posed by irgarol and diuron whereas the probability of adverse effects was high in the case of TBT. This journal is � the Partner Organisations 2014.

Ports and harbors may represent a threat for coastal ecosystems due to pollutant inputs, especially those derived from maritime activities. In this study, we report a first assessment of the ecotoxicological threat posed by six ports and harbors of opposite coastal regions, Apulia and Albania, in the southern Adriatic Sea (Italy). A bioassay battery consisting of four different species representing different trophic levels, algae Dunaliella tertiolecta, bacteria Vibrio fischeri, crustacean Artemia salina, and echinoids Paracentrotus lividus, has been used to assess sediment elutriates, pore waters, and sediment suspensions. Two different approaches of toxicity data integration, worst case and integrated index, have been used to determine the most appropriate procedure for the investigated sites. All sites with the worst case approach showed high toxicity levels. The chronic test with algae was the most sensitive identifying the highest effects in the battery. This effect can be attributable to contaminants derived from antifouling paints. The sediments, evaluated with V. fischeri test, often showed toxicity not found in the aqueous matrices of the same sites and that can be mainly linked to organic compounds. The test battery used in this study allowed us to perform a preliminary screening of the ecotoxicological risk of the studied area. In fact, the species utilized for toxicity tests responded differently to the investigated samples, showing different sensitivity. The test battery integrated index did not allow highlighting the differences among the sites and showed a general high ecotoxicological risk. A larger number of tests with higher sensitivity together with a tailored attribution of weights to endpoints and matrices will improve the final site evaluation.

The effect of nano ZnO (nZnO) upon the fertilization and early development of embryos of the Mediterranean sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus is reported herein for the first time. Zn ion (ZnCl2) and bulk ZnO (bZnO) toxicity were assessed for comparison. The embryotoxicity tests showed a 100% effect already at 1μM of nZnO (expressed as [Zn]) while bZnO and ZnCl2 showed EC50s of 0.98 [0.88-1.19]μM [Zn] and 2.02 [1.97-2.09]μM [Zn], respectively. Noteworthy, the frequency of developmental defects for the three compounds was dissimilar and a specific trend for larval skeletal abnormality produced by nZnO was observed. The sperm fertilization capability was only slightly affected by the tested chemicals while the effects were dramatic on the offspring quality of sperms exposed to ZnO compounds resulting in an early block of the regular larval development. ZnO toxicity seems related not only to Zinc ions but also to some surface interactions of particle/aggregates with target organisms and/or with the seawater. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

This study aimed to assess soil quality by chemical and ecotoxicological investigations and to check the correspondence between soil metal concentrations and ecotoxicity. For these purposes, surface soils collected at four adjacent roadside urban parks and at a former industrial area were characterized for C/N, organic matter content, texture, and pH. Cr, Cu, Ni and Pb, chosen among the most representative soil metal contaminants, were measured as total content and as available and water soluble fractions. In addition, the total concentrations of the investigated metals were used to calculate two chemical indices: the contamination and the potential ecological risk factors. The toxicity of the investigated soils was evaluated by an ecotoxicity test battery carried out on both soil samples (Vibrio fischeri, Heterocypris incongruens and Sinapis alba) and elutriates (Vibrio fischeri, Daphnia magna and Selenastrum capricornutum). The findings, both by the chemical and ecotoxicological approaches, would suggest that the soils with high metal contamination pose ecological risks. On the other hand, moderately metal contaminated soils did not exclude soil ecotoxicity. In fact, toxic effects were also highlighted in soils with low metal content, toxicity being affected by metal availability and soil characteristics. Moreover, the results suggest the importance of using a battery of tests to assess soil ecotoxicity.

The fate and the behaviour of nanoparticles in seawater, which is the ultimate sink for any release of nanoparticles, is a very important issue for the assessment of their environmental impact. Despite this concern, only few studies regarding the ecotoxic effect of NPs upon marine organisms were conducted. In this work the dispersion behaviour of NPs in a seawater matrix has been investigated and their physicochemical properties characterized. The ecotoxicological impact towards marine organisms of several nanoparticles has been also examined.

Nanomaterials have widespread applications in several industrial sectors. ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) are among the most commonly used metal oxide NPs in personal care products, coating and paints. However, their potential toxicological impact on the environment is largely unexplored.The aim of this work was to evaluate whether ZnO nanoparticles exert toxic and genotoxic effects upon terrestrial organisms: plants (Lepidium sativum, Vicia faba), crustaceans (Heterocyipris incongruens), insects (Folsomia candida). To achieve this purpose, organisms pertaining to different trophic levels of the soil ecosystem have been exposed to ZnO NPs. In parallel, the selected soil organisms have been exposed to the same amount of Zn in its ionic form (Zn(2+)) and the effects have been compared.The most conspicuous effect, among the test battery organisms, was obtained with the ostracod H. incongruens, which was observed to be the most sensitive organism to ZnO NPs. The root elongation of L. sativum was also mainly affected by exposure to ZnO NPs with respect to ZnCl(2), while collembolan reproduction test produced similar results for both Zn compounds. Slight genotoxic effects with V. faba micronucleus test were observed with both soils.Nanostructured ZnO seems to exert a higher toxic effect in insoluble form towards different terrestrial organisms with respect to similar amounts of zinc in ionic form.

Given the widespread applications of nanotechnology products, the evaluation of the potential hazards related to human exposures and environmental release of nanoparticles has become an urgent need. The development of a safety database for nanoscale particles is evolving as new particles, materials and exposure scenarios are being developed.

The aim of the work is to assess the feasibility of bioremediation of a soil, containing heavy metals and spiked with diesel oil (DO), through a bioaugmentation strategy based on the use of a microbial formula tailored with selected native strains. The soil originated from the metallurgic area of Bagnoli (Naples, Italy). The formula, named ENEA-LAM, combines ten bacterial strains selected for multiple resistance to heavy metals among the native microbial community. The biodegradation process of diesel oil was assessed in biometer flasks by monitoring the following parameters: DO composition by GC-MS, CO2 evolution rate, microbial load and composition of the community by T-RFLP, physiological profile in Biolog ECOplates and ecotoxicity of the system. The application of this microbial formula allowed to obtain, in the presence of heavy metals, the complete degradation of n-C(12-20), the total disappearance of phenantrene, a 60% reduction of isoprenoids and an overall reduction of about 75% of the total diesel hydrocarbons in 42 days. Concurrently with the increase of metabolic activity at community level and the microbial load, the gradual abatement of the ecotoxicity was observed. The T-RFLP analysis highlighted that most of the ENEA-LAM strains survived and some minor native strains, undetectable in the soil at the beginning of the experiment, developed. Such a bioaugmentation approach allows the newly established microbial community to strike a balance between the introduced and the naturally present microorganisms. The results indicate that the use of a tailored microbial formula may efficiently facilitate and speed up the bioremediation of matrices co-contaminated with hydrocarbons and heavy metals. The study represents the first step for the scale up of the system and should be verified at a larger scale. In this view, this bioaugmentation strategy may contribute to overcome a critical bottleneck of the bioremediation technology.

Surface soils were collected at remote, urban and industrial sites in the Southern of Italy in order to evaluate PAH concentrations and assess the toxic effects by a battery of ecotoxicological tests. The tests were performed on whole soils and on both organic and aqueous extracts. Further goal of this study was to integrate the results coming from each test and matrix in a synthetic toxicity index. The highest summation sigmaPAH concentrations were measured at the industrial soil, although this one did not show an high ecotoxicological risk. Among the performed tests, the phytotoxicity tests showed the highest sensitivity. For whole soil, the worst case always has been represented by test through bacteria. Our results could represent the first step toward the selection of a proper battery to characterize the soil ecotoxicological risk.

We report on the fabrication of an optical silicon-based label-free DNA sensor. n-Type crystalline silicon wafers have been electrochemically etched to form porous silicon layers and characterized in terms of porosity, pore distribution, surface composition and photoluminescence. Samples (0.25 cm 2 ) have been cut and properly derivatized using trimethoxy-3-bromoacetamidopropylsilane in order to link single strand DNA (ss-DNA). Such a molecule is not commercially available and has been ad-hoc prepared by reacting hydrobromic acid and 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane in presence of 1-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-3-ethylcarbodiimide as coupling agent. Trimethoxy-3-bromoacetamidopropylsilane acts as a bridge anchored to the porous silicon surface through the silane group while immobilizing ss-DNA by means of the bromoacetamido moiety. We have found that derivatized samples exhibit a photoluminescence that is stable in time and is not modified after exposure to non-complementary DNA strand. On the other hand, a sensible enhancement of the light emission has been observed when the derivatized samples react with the complementary strand, showing that the specific ss-DNA/complementary DNA (c-DNA) interaction can be optically sensed without using further labeling steps. This strongly strengthens the possible role of silicon as a material for biosensors.

Irgarol and Diuron are the most representative "organic booster biocides" that replaced organotin compounds in antifouling paints. It cannot be assumed beforehand that their use will have no environmental impact: more ecotoxicological data and a significant environmental monitoring are required. Spermio and embryotoxicities of the biocides Irgarol and Diuron were investigated on Paracentrotus lividus, the dominant echinoid species of the Mediterranean Sea. Spermiotoxicity was studied by assessing the effects of sperm exposure on fertilization rate as well as on the induction of transmissible damages to the offspring. Embryotoxicity was studied by assessing the developmental defects in the exposed larvae. The experimental results show a Diuron EC50 of 2.39 (+/- 0.21) mg/L with a NOEL of 0.25 mg/L for embryos, and of 5.09 (+/- 0.45) mg/L with a NOEL of 0.5 mg/L for sperms, respectively. Data obtained from the embryotoxicity test on Irgarol [EC50 0.99 (+/- 0.69) mg/L] are of the same order of magnitude as the literature data about Japanese urchins. Spermiotoxicity tests show an Irgarol EC50 of 9.04 (+/- 0.45) mg/L with a NOEL of 0.1 mg/L. These data show the different sensitivities of the two tests: embryos are more sensitive than sperms for both the tested chemicals and Diuron seems to be the less toxic one. Moreover, as a major output of the experimental work, tested herbicides exert transmissible damage to spermatozoa evidenced by larval malformations in the offspring, mainly P1 type (skeletal alterations). The comparison of the endpoints results offers an interesting indication of a probable different mode of action (Irgarol seems to interact with calcium homeostasis) of the two biocides.

Sea urchin embryotoxicity tests are widely used for evaluating the biological effects of contaminants in marine environments. The currently used traditional and standardized protocols are quite slow and laborious. The present work shows a modified bioassay (new embryotoxicity test; NET) in an attempt to speed up laboratory work using a limited number of fertilized eggs. Several experiments have been conducted both with a traditional bioassay and with the NET, using the same test conditions, in order to evaluate the reliability of the proposed simplified bioassay. Adult Paracentrotus lividus (Lamark) were collected from the Tyrrenian Sea (Bay of Naples) and embryos, reared in filtered seawater, were exposed to increasing potassium dichromate and copper sulfate concentrations. Then the EC(50) was calculated. The analysis of the results evidenced good repeatability. The confidence limits in all tests overlapped; moreover, data correlation analysis between the results of both tests showed a high significant accordance (chromium, R2 = 0.93, P0.01; copper, R2 = 0.86, P0/05). In conclusion, the NET seems to be a good alternative to the traditional tests; it could be a first step toward a new routine ecotoxicological kit for seawater.

We studied the genome of an antarctic ice fish, Chionodraco hamatus, in order to detect highly repetitive DNAs that may play a role in heterochromatinization processes and sex chromosome differentiation. We used two different experimental approaches. Hybridization of a Bkm probe to genomic DNA showed slight differences between the two sexes. Using restriction enzymes, a Bgl II satellite (pIF) was isolated. In situ hybridization revealed a preferential localization of pIF on the centromeres and the telomeres of most chromosomes, as well as an interstitial band on the long arms of the neo-Y sex chromosome, where probably the hypothetical fusion took place. Dot-blot experiments showed that pIF is still present in species belonging to different families of the same suborder. Though preliminary, our results suggest a conservative nature of this DNA which might have played a definite functional role in the genome of these polar fishes. © 1994 Springer-Verlag.
