The RECONNECT project addresses the fragmentation of Ireland's public healthcare systems, aiming to enhance service planning and delivery for chronic disease management. By integrating complex systems within the Health Service Executive (HSE), it prioritizes data privacy while supporting future digital resource integration. The methodology encompasses structural integration through a Federated Database design to maintain system autonomy and privacy, semantic integration using a Record Linkage module to facilitate integration without individual identifiers, and the adoption of the HL7-FHIR framework for high interoperability with the national electronic health record (EHR) and the Integrated Information Service (IIS). This innovative approach features a unique architecture for loosely coupled systems and a robust privacy layer. A demonstration system has been implemented to utilize synthetic data from the Hospital Inpatient Enquiry (HIPE), Chronic Disease Management (CDM), Primary Care Reimbursement Service (PCRS) and Retina Screen systems for healthcare queries. In an increasingly interconnected world, a key scientific challenge is to examine mechanisms that lead to the widespread propagation of contagions, such as misinformation and pathogens, and identify risk factors that can trigger large-scale outbreaks. Underlying both the spread of disease and misinformation epidemics is the evolution of the contagion as it propagates, leading to the emergence of different strains, e.g., through genetic mutations in pathogens and alterations in the information content. Recent studies have revealed that models that do not account for heterogeneity in transmission risks associated with different strains of the circulating contagion can lead to inaccurate predictions. However, existing results on multi-strain spreading assume that the network has a vanishingly small clustering coefficient, whereas clustering is widely known to be a fundamental property of real-world social networks. In this work, we investigate spreading processes that entail evolutionary adaptations on random graphs with tunable clustering and arbitrary degree distributions. We derive a mathematical framework to quantify the epidemic characteristics of a contagion that evolves as it spreads, with the structure of the underlying network as given via arbitrary {\em joint} degree distributions of single-edges and triangles. To the best of our knowledge, our work is the first to jointly analyze the impact of clustering and evolution on the emergence of epidemic outbreaks. We supplement our theoretical finding with numerical simulations and case studies, shedding light on the impact of clustering on contagion spread.

The fusion cross-sections of $^{126}$Ba, $^{127,126,125}$Cs, $^{125,123,122}$Xe and $^{124,123}$I residues, populated via $x$n, p$x$n, $\alpha$$x$n, and $\alpha$p$x$n channels, have been measured in $^{12}$C+$^{118}$Sn system at E$_{\textrm{lab}}$ $\approx$ 65-85 MeV. For an insight into the formation and decay modes of these residues, experimentally measured cross-sections have been analyzed in the framework of theoretical model codes PACE4 and EMPIRE. The cross-sections of p$x$n ($^{127,126,125}$Cs), $\alpha$xn ($^{125}$Xe), and $\alpha$p$x$n ($^{123}$I) channels have been found to be substantially fed from their higher charge isobars via $\beta^+$ decay and electron capture. In order to deduce the contribution of higher charge isobars in the population of these residues, the independent cross-sections of evaporation residues have been calculated using the prescription of Cavinato $et$ $al.$ and compared with that calculated using theoretical model codes. It has been found that the PACE4 and EMPIRE calculations fairly reproduce the independent cross-sections of evaporation residues within the experimental uncertainties. Interestingly, it has been found that the $\alpha$-emitting channels, contrary to established findings in reactions involving $\alpha$ cluster projectiles (e.g., $^{12}$C, $^{16}$O, etc.) at low incident energies, display negligible contribution of incomplete fusion (ICF). A comparison of incomplete fusion fraction as a function of entrance channel mass-asymmetry for reactions involving $^{12}$C projectile with nearby targets indicates dissimilar behavior of $^{118}$Sn target.

In this work, fission of moderately excited compound nucleus $^{220}$Ra${^\star}$ produced in $^{12}$C+$^{208}$Pb reaction at E$_{\rm lab}$ = 81.9, 75.8, and 67.5 MeV has been studied. 28 fission fragments, within the mass range 60$\leq$A$\leq$141, have been identified based on their characteristic decay $\gamma$-lines and half-lives. The yields of different fission fragments have been analyzed to generate isotopic and isobaric yield distributions. The value of the mass dispersion parameter, $\sigma^2_A$, is found to be 2.93 and 2.65 for Antimony (Sb) isotope at excitation energy E$^{\star}$ = 45.4 and 39.6 MeV, and 1.24 for Indium (In) isotope at E$^{\star}$ = 45.4 MeV. The charge dispersion parameter $\sigma_z$ for Sb is estimated to be 0.769 and 0.714 at E$^{\star}$ = 45.4 and 39.6 MeV, respectively. For In isotopes, the value of $\sigma_z$ is estimated to be 0.430 at E$^{\star}$ = 45.4 MeV. The value of mass and charge dispersion parameters for Sb and In isotopes display good agreement with the values reported in the literature for similar systems. It has been found that $^{99m}$Tc and $^{111}$In, medically important isotopes, populate in this system. The present investigations suggest that fission is a dominating mode of deexcitation of the compound nucleus, even at entrance channel energies slightly above the Coulomb barrier.

The rise of time-domain astronomy including electromagnetic counterparts to gravitational waves, gravitational microlensing, explosive phenomena, and even astrometry with Gaia, are showing the power and need for surveys with high-cadence, large area, and long time baselines to study the transient universe. A constellation of SmallSats or CubeSats providing wide, instantaneous sky coverage down to 21 Vega mag at optical wavelengths would be ideal for addressing this need. We are assembling CuRIOS-ED (CubeSats for Rapid Infrared and Optical Survey--Exploration Demo), an optical telescope payload which will act as a technology demonstrator for a larger constellation of several hundred 16U CubeSats known as CuRIOS. In preparation for CuRIOS, CuRIOS-ED will launch in late 2025 as part of the 12U Starspec InspireSat MVP payload. CuRIOS-ED will be used to demonstrate the StarSpec ADCS pointing capabilities to <1" and to space-qualify a commercial camera package for use on the full CuRIOS payload. The CuRIOS-ED camera system will utilize a Sony IMX455 CMOS detector delivered in an off-the-shelf Atik apx60 package which we modified to be compatible with operations in vacuum as well as the CubeSat form factor, power, and thermal constraints. By qualifying this commercial camera solution, the cost of each CuRIOS satellite will be greatly decreased (~100x) when compared with current space-qualified cameras with IMX455 detectors. We discuss the CuRIOS-ED mission design with an emphasis on the disassembly, repackaging, and testing of the Atik apx60 for space-based missions. Characterization of the apx60's read noise, dark current, patterned noise, and thermal behavior are reported for a range of temperatures (-35 C to 40 C) and exposure times (0.001s to 30 s). We present a lightweight approach to sequence classification using Ensemble Methods for Hidden Markov Models (HMMs). HMMs offer significant advantages in scenarios with imbalanced or smaller datasets due to their simplicity, interpretability, and efficiency. These models are particularly effective in domains such as finance and biology, where traditional methods struggle with high feature dimensionality and varied sequence lengths. Our ensemble-based scoring method enables the comparison of sequences of any length and improves performance on imbalanced datasets. This study focuses on the binary classification problem, particularly in scenarios with data imbalance, where the negative class is the majority (e.g., normal data) and the positive class is the minority (e.g., anomalous data), often with extreme distribution skews. We propose a novel training approach for HMM Ensembles that generalizes to multi-class problems and supports classification and anomaly detection. Our method fits class-specific groups of diverse models using random data subsets, and compares likelihoods across classes to produce composite scores, achieving high average precisions and AUCs. In addition, we compare our approach with neural network-based methods such as Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and Long Short-Term Memory networks (LSTMs), highlighting the efficiency and robustness of HMMs in data-scarce environments. Motivated by real-world use cases, our method demonstrates robust performance across various benchmarks, offering a flexible framework for diverse applications.

Effective water quality monitoring in coastal regions is crucial due to the progressive deterioration caused by pollution and human activities. To address this, this study develops time-series models to predict chlorophyll-a (Chl-a), suspended solids (SS), and turbidity using Sentinel-2 satellite data and Google Earth Engine (GEE) in the coastal regions of Hong Kong. Leveraging Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) Recurrent Neural Networks, the study incorporates extensive temporal datasets to enhance prediction accuracy. The models utilize spectral data from Sentinel-2, focusing on optically active components, and demonstrate that selected variables closely align with the spectral characteristics of Chl-a and SS. The results indicate improved predictive performance over previous methods, highlighting the potential for remote sensing technology in continuous and comprehensive water quality assessment.

Cost-effectiveness analyses, based on decision-analytic models of disease progression and treatment, are routinely used to assess the economic value of a new intervention and consequently inform reimbursement decisions for the intervention. Many decision-analytic models developed to assess the economic value of highly effective directly acting antiviral (DAA) treatments for the hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection do not incorporate the transmission dynamics of HCV, accounting for which is required to estimate the number of downstream infections prevented by curing an infection. In this study, we develop and validate a comprehensive agent-based simulation (ABS) model of HCV transmission dynamics in the Indian context and use it to: (a) quantify the extent to which the cost-effectiveness of a DAA is underestimated - as a function of its uptake rate - if disease transmission dynamics are not considered in a cost-effectiveness analysis model; and (b) quantify the impact of the frequency and timing of treatment with DAAs, also as a function of their uptake rate, within a disease surveillance period on its cost-effectiveness. The process of accomplishing the above research objectives also motivated the development of a novel random sampling and allocation based approach, along with associated theoretical grounding, to estimate individual-level outcomes within an ABS that incurs substantially lower computational expense than the benchmark incremental accumulation approach.

This paper introduces long-context Granite code models that support effective context windows of up to 128K tokens. Our solution for scaling context length of Granite 3B/8B code models from 2K/4K to 128K consists of a light-weight continual pretraining by gradually increasing its RoPE base frequency with repository-level file packing and length-upsampled long-context data. Additionally, we also release instruction-tuned models with long-context support which are derived by further finetuning the long context base models on a mix of permissively licensed short and long-context instruction-response pairs. While comparing to the original short-context Granite code models, our long-context models achieve significant improvements on long-context tasks without any noticeable performance degradation on regular code completion benchmarks (e.g., HumanEval). We release all our long-context Granite code models under an Apache 2.0 license for both research and commercial use.

Deep neural network-based voice authentication systems are promising biometric verification techniques that uniquely identify biological characteristics to verify a user. However, they are particularly susceptible to targeted data poisoning attacks, where attackers replace legitimate users' utterances with their own. We propose an enhanced framework using realworld datasets considering realistic attack scenarios. The results show that the proposed approach is robust, providing accurate authentications even when only a small fraction (5% of the dataset) is poisoned.

Pathology is the study of microscopic inspection of tissue, and a pathology diagnosis is often the medical gold standard to diagnose disease. Pathology images provide a unique challenge for computer-vision-based analysis: a single pathology Whole Slide Image (WSI) is gigapixel-sized and often contains hundreds of thousands to millions of objects of interest across multiple resolutions. In this work, we propose PathoLogy Universal TransfOrmer (PLUTO): a light-weight pathology FM that is pre-trained on a diverse dataset of 195 million image tiles collected from multiple sites and extracts meaningful representations across multiple WSI scales that enable a large variety of downstream pathology tasks. In particular, we design task-specific adaptation heads that utilize PLUTO's output embeddings for tasks which span pathology scales ranging from subcellular to slide-scale, including instance segmentation, tile classification, and slide-level prediction. We compare PLUTO's performance to other state-of-the-art methods on a diverse set of external and internal benchmarks covering multiple biologically relevant tasks, tissue types, resolutions, stains, and scanners. We find that PLUTO matches or outperforms existing task-specific baselines and pathology-specific foundation models, some of which use orders-of-magnitude larger datasets and model sizes when compared to PLUTO. Our findings present a path towards a universal embedding to power pathology image analysis, and motivate further exploration around pathology foundation models in terms of data diversity, architectural improvements, sample efficiency, and practical deployability in real-world applications.

The pyrochlore iridates, A$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$, show a wide variety of structural, electronic, and magnetic properties controlled by the interplay of different exchange interactions, which can be tuned by external pressure. In this work, we report pressure-induced phase transitions at ambient temperature using synchrotron-based X-ray diffraction (up to ~ 20 GPa) and Raman-scattering measurements (up to ~ 25 GPa) of the pyrochlore series (Sm$_{1-x}$Bi$_x$)$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ ($x =$ 0, 0.02, and 0.10). Our Raman and X-ray data suggest an iso-structural transition in Sm$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ at Pc ~ 11.2 GPa associated with the rearrangement of IrO6 octahedra in the pyrochlore lattice. The transition pressure decreases to ~ 10.2 and 9 GPa for $x =$ 0.02 and 0.10, respectively. For all the samples, the linewidth of three phonons associated with Ir-O-Ir (A1g and Eg) and Ir-O (T$_2$g$_4$) vibrations show anomalous decrease up to Pc, due to decrease in electron-phonon interaction.

We present experiments, supported by mechanically detailed simulations, establishing bulk vapor-liquid condensation of a hard-bead fluid by a tiny population of orientable motile grains that self-assembles into a moving polarized monolayer. In a quasi-1D geometry two such layers, oppositely aligned, immobilize the condensed non-motile component. We account for our observations through a continuum theory with a naturally non-reciprocal Cahn-Hilliard structure, whose predicted trends as a function of packing fraction are consistent with our observations., Comment: PDF repaired. We obtain an exact solution of spherically symmetric Letelier AdS black holes immersed in perfect fluid dark matter (PFDM). Considering the cosmological constant as the positive pressure of the system and volume as its conjugate variable, we analyse the thermodynamics of our black holes in the extended phase space. Owing to the background clouds of strings parameter ($a$) and the parameter endowed with PFDM ($\beta$), we analyse the Hawking temperature, entropy and specific heat. We also investigate the relationship between the photon sphere radius and the phase transition for the Letelier AdS black holes immersed in PFDM. Through the analysis, we find with a particular condition, there are non-monotonic behaviours between the photon sphere radius, the impact parameter, the PFDM parameter, temperature, and pressure. We can regard both the changes of photon sphere radius and impact parameter before and after phase transition as the order parameter; their critical exponents near the critical point are equal to the same value 1/2, just like ordinary thermal systems. Ovarian cancer detection has traditionally relied on a multi-step process that includes biopsy, tissue staining, and morphological analysis by experienced pathologists. While widely practiced, this conventional approach suffers from several drawbacks: it is qualitative, time-intensive, and heavily dependent on the quality of staining. Mid-infrared (MIR) hyperspectral photothermal imaging is a label-free, biochemically quantitative technology that, when combined with machine learning algorithms, can eliminate the need for staining and provide quantitative results comparable to traditional histology. However, this technology is slow. This work presents a novel approach to MIR photothermal imaging that enhances its speed by an order of magnitude. Our method significantly accelerates data collection by capturing a combination of high-resolution and interleaved, lower-resolution infrared band images and applying computational techniques for data interpolation. We effectively minimize data collection requirements by leveraging sparse data acquisition and employing curvelet-based reconstruction algorithms. This method enables the reconstruction of high-quality, high-resolution images from undersampled datasets and achieving a 10X improvement in data acquisition time. We assessed the performance of our sparse imaging methodology using a variety of quantitative metrics, including mean squared error (MSE), structural similarity index (SSIM), and tissue subtype classification accuracies, employing both random forest and convolutional neural network (CNN) models, accompanied by ROC curves. Our statistically robust analysis, based on data from 100 ovarian cancer patient samples and over 65 million data points, demonstrates the method's capability to produce superior image quality and accurately distinguish between different gynecological tissue types with segmentation accuracy exceeding 95%.

Restless multi-armed bandits (RMABs) generalize the multi-armed bandits where each arm exhibits Markovian behavior and transitions according to their transition dynamics. Solutions to RMAB exist for both offline and online cases. However, they do not consider the distribution of pulls among the arms. Studies have shown that optimal policies lead to unfairness, where some arms are not exposed enough. Existing works in fairness in RMABs focus heavily on the offline case, which diminishes their application in real-world scenarios where the environment is largely unknown. In the online scenario, we propose the first fair RMAB framework, where each arm receives pulls in proportion to its merit. We define the merit of an arm as a function of its stationary reward distribution. We prove that our algorithm achieves sublinear fairness regret in the single pull case $O(\sqrt{T\ln T})$, with $T$ being the total number of episodes. Many critical biological processes, like wound healing, require confluent cell monolayers/bulk tissues to transition from a jammed solid-like to a fluid-like state. Although numerical studies anticipate changes in the cell shape alone can lead to unjamming, experimental support for this prediction is not definitive because, in living systems, fluidization due to density changes cannot be ruled out. Additionally, a cell's ability to modulate its motility only compounds difficulties since even in assemblies of rigid active particles, changing the nature of self-propulsion has non-trivial effects on the dynamics. Here, we design and assemble a monolayer of synthetic cell-mimics and examine their collective behaviour. By systematically increasing the persistence time of self-propulsion, we discovered a cell shape-driven, density-independent, re-entrant jamming transition. Notably, we observed cell shape and shape variability were mutually constrained in the confluent limit and followed the same universal scaling as that observed in confluent epithelia. Dynamical heterogeneities, however, did not conform to this scaling, with the fast cells showing suppressed shape variability, which our simulations revealed is due to a transient confinement effect of these cells by their slower neighbors. Our experiments unequivocally establish a morphodynamic link, demonstrating that geometric constraints alone can dictate epithelial jamming/unjamming.
