Diurnal and nocturnal pollinators are fundamental for the functioning of natural ecosystems and food security. However, differences between diurnal and nocturnal pollination networks and the contribution of these pollinators to plant fecundity have not been assessed comprehensively within a community context. In the Dajiuhu subalpine wetland of central China, we supplemented data from an intensive field survey with the analysis of pollen loads carried by diurnal and nocturnal pollinators to compare the structures of diurnal and nocturnal pollination networks using network parameters. Simultaneously, we compared the contribution of diurnal and nocturnal pollinators to plant reproduction of the nine dominant species based on stigma pollen placement. We found that although diurnal and nocturnal pollination networks exhibited a similar structural organisation, the diurnal network displayed greater stability and broader interaction with pollinators and plants compared to the nocturnal network. However, nocturnal pollinator species tended to establish less generalised interactions with the available floral resources. Both diurnal and nocturnal pollinators played a significant role in plant reproduction, and nocturnal pollination can result in greater pollen germination. In terms of stability, the lower redundancy of links within nocturnal networks suggests they may be more vulnerable to the temporary or permanent disappearance of plant resources in the study area. Our findings highlight the differences in the contributions of diurnal and nocturnal pollinators to plant reproduction at the community level, demonstrating that nocturnal pollinators are not redundant in maintaining species diversity in communities. This knowledge should play a pivotal role in preventing future pollination declines and improving pollinator conservation efforts.

Selection for specialized coevolutionary relationships can arise if generalized opportunistic pollinators, while still delivering some pollen, operate as less effective pollen delivery agents. Nevertheless, generalization could buffer high-latitude communities from loss of specialist pollinator species by providing some pollination service. Currently, there is limited understanding of the ecosystem services provided by generalized pollinators and whether they increase the fitness of the plants they visit. Network data and thorough observations of floral visitors, paired with estimates of seed set, offer some insight into the role of generalists, which in turn can inform us about how plants are likely to respond to ecosystem disturbances, such as losses of some pollinators, or changes in land cover. Here, we report on plant-pollinator visitation networks in Canada with high levels of generalization and examine the effects of generalization on seed set under different disturbance histories. We also then take a case study of one crop wild relative, Rubus arcticus or Arctic raspberry, and report on a near-complete characterization of pollinator interactions in different environmental conditions. Our findings indicate that generalized pollinators, though frequent and robust to variable temperatures and moisture conditions, do not appear to play a strong role in increasing the reproductive output of many plant species, and may provide only a weak buffer against the stronger effects of disturbance.

Abstract Background The occurrence and frequency of plant–pollinator interactions are acknowledged to be a function of multiple factors, including the spatio-temporal distribution of species. The study of pollination specialization by examining network properties and more recently incorporating predictors of pairwise interactions is emerging as a useful framework, yet integrated datasets combining network structure, habitat disturbance, and phylogenetic information are still scarce. Results We found that plant–pollinator interactions in a grassland ecosystem in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains are not randomly distributed and that high levels of reciprocal specialization are generated by biological constraints, such as floral symmetry, pollinator size and pollinator sociality, because these traits lead to morphological or phenological mismatching between interacting species. We also detected that landscape degradation was associated with differences in the network topology, but the interaction webs still maintained a consistently higher number of reciprocal specialization cases than expected. Evidence for the reciprocal evolutionary dependence in visitors (e.g., related pollinators visiting related plants) were weak in this study system, however we identified key species joining clustered units. Conclusions Our results indicate that the conserved links with keystone species may provide the foundation for generating local reciprocal specialization. From the general topology of the networks, plant–pollinators interactions in sites with disturbance consisted of generalized nodes connecting modules (i.e., hub and numerous connectors). Vice versa, interactions in less disturbed sites consisted of more specialized and symmetrical connections.

Increased human land use has resulted in the increased homogenization of biodiversity between sites, yet we lack sufficient indicators to predict which species decline and the consequence of their potential loss on ecosystem services. We used comparative phylogenetic analysis to (1) characterize how increasing conversion of forest and grasslands to grazing pasturelands changes plant diversity and composition; (2) examine how changes in land use relate to declines in functional trait diversity; and (3) specifically investigate how these changes in plant composition affect the prevalence of zygomorphy and the possible consequences that these changes may have on pollinator functional groups. As predicted, we found that the conversion to grazing pasturelands negatively impacted species richness and phylogenetic composition. Clades with significantly more represented taxa in grasslands (GL) were genera with a high representation of agricultural weeds, while the composition was biased towards clades of subalpine herbaceous wildflowers in Mixed Forest (MF). Changes in community composition and structure had strong effects on the prevalence of zygomorphic species likely driven by nitrogen-fixing abilities of certain clades with zygomorphic flowers (e.g., Fabaceae). Land conversion can thus have unexpected impacts on trait distributions relevant for the functioning of the community in other capacities (e.g., cascading effects to other trophic levels (i.e., pollinators). Finally, the combination of traits represented by the current composition of species in GL and MF might enhance the diagnostic value of productivity and ecosystem processes in the most eroded ecosystems.

The present paper characterizes the usage and handling system, demand and potential offer of Stenocereus griseus, a columnar cactus widely used by the "Wayúu", an indigenous community in the Colombian Caribbean region of "La Guajira". The current use of S. griseus is restricted to the collection of dry timber wood ("yotojoro") for house building; of the fruit, which is used for human consumption; and of the young stems, used as goat fodder, and as living fences. An evaluation of the factors that affect the populations allowed the detection of five different harm categories: those caused by cuttings with cutlass (type I); by insects (type II); goats (type III); birds (type IV); and wind (type V). The annual "yotojoro" demand is subject to the building needs of the people in the area, which is defined as occasional. The current cropping and extraction method was not found to be causing any local disequilibrium in the species population maintenance. There is a steady cardon demand for fodder and living fences all year long; one which is causing the highest harm impact. Finally, the main conservation problems of the species are discussed, together with the suggestion of management alternatives for grazing activities.

En la Alta Guajira del Caribe colombiano, el cactus Stenocereus griseus es muy utilizado por la comunidad Wayuu. En el presente trabajo se caracteriza el sistema de uso y manejo, así como la demanda y oferta potencial de S. griseus en dos localidades. Una evaluación de los factores que afectan las poblaciones permitió determinar cinco categorías de daño, de las cuales las más importantes son las ocasionadas por corte con machete (tipo I), insectos (Tipo II) y cabras (Tipo III). El uso actual de Stenocereus griseus se restringe a la colecta de la madera seca (“yotojoro”) para construcción de viviendas tradicionales en la cultura Wayuu; la colecta de frutos en temporada de cosecha y la cosecha de tallos jóvenes para alimento de cabras y cercas vivas. La demanda anual de “yotojoro” está sujeta a la necesidad de construcción de los habitantes del área, que es definida como ocasional. El método actual de cosecha y extracción del mismo no está generando desequilibrio local en el mantenimiento de la especie. La demanda de cardones para cercas vivas y pastoreo es constante durante todo el año y generan el mayor impacto de daño. Finalmente, se discuten los principales problemas de conservación de la especie, y se recomienda establecer alternativas de manejo para las actividades de pastoreo, dado que con el ritmo actual de extracción, la población de cactus está expuesta a una inminente disminución local.

Se reconocen los compuestos pteridínicos asociados con la pigmentación ocular del tipo silvestre y cuatro mutantes (Vermilion, Sepia, Plum y White) de Drosophila melanogaster, relacionando las rutas metabólicas de los pigmentos oculares y su modificación en la manifestación de la coloración ocular de cada mutante. Adicionalmente, se describe la ruta completa de biosíntesis de compuestos pteridínicos. La separación de pigmentos se realizó por medio de cromatografía en papel y el revelado de colores por transiluminación ultravioleta. El tipo silvestre y los mutantes Vermilion y Plum presentan el mismo patrón cromatográfico, mientras que en Sepia hay ausencia de drosopterina y en White el único pigmento revelado es xantopterina. La coloración ocular de Vermilion se debe a una alteración en la ruta de formación de omocromos (pigmento café), mientras que en Sepia hay un bloqueo de la pirimidodiazepina sintasa sin producción de drosopterina. El fenotipo de Plum es ocasionado por posible daño en los transportadores de los precursores de pteridinas. El mutante White expresa xantopterina como producto de procesos metabólicos alternos.
