Abstract

This document is comprised of a collection of updated preliminary parameters for the key parts of the muon collider. The updated preliminary parameters follow on from the October 2023 Tentative Parameters Report. Particular attention has been given to regions of the facility that are believed to hold greater technical uncertainty in their design and that have a strong impact on the cost and power consumption of the facility. The data is collected from a collaborative spreadsheet and transferred to overleaf.

Abstract

The International Muon Collider Collaboration (IMCC) [1] was established in 2020 following the recommendations of the European Strategy for Particle Physics (ESPP) and the implementation of the European Strategy for Particle Physics-Accelerator R&D Roadmap by the Laboratory Directors Group [2], hereinafter referred to as the the European LDG roadmap. The Muon Collider Study (MuC) covers the accelerator complex, detectors and physics for a future muon collider. In 2023, European Commission support was obtained for a design study of a muon collider (MuCol) [3]. This project started on 1st March 2023, with work-packages aligned with the overall muon collider studies. In preparation of and during the 2021-22 U.S. Snowmass process, the muon collider project parameters, technical studies and physics performance studies were performed and presented in great detail. Recently, the P5 panel [4] in the U.S. recommended a muon collider R&D, proposed to join the IMCC and envisages that the U.S. should prepare to host a muon collider, calling this their "muon shot". Abstract

We build Floquet-driven capactive circuit networks to realize topological states of matter in the frequency domain. We find the Floquet circuit network equations of motion to reveal a potential barrier which effectively acts as a boundary in frequency space. By implementing a Su-Shrieffer-Heeger Floquet lattice model and measuring the associated circuit Laplacian and characteristic resonances, we demonstrate how topological edge modes can nucleate at such a frequency boundary., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, supplement

Abstract

We demonstrate how table-top settings combining hyperbolic lattices with nonlinear dynamics universally encode aspects of the bulk-boundary-correspondence between gravity in anti-de-Sitter (AdS) space and conformal field theory (CFT). Our concrete and broadly applicable holographic toy model simulates gravitational self-interactions in the bulk and features an emergent CFT with nontrivial correlations on the boundary. We measure the CFT data contained in the two- and three-point functions and clarify how a thermal CFT is simulated through an effective black hole geometry. Abstract

Abstract Introduction Obesity is one of the biggest modern health issues worldwide. Owing to the failure of both behavioral and pharmacological measures, the surgical approach has been established as the main conduct to follow, with bariatric surgery being one of the most effective and safe procedures. One of the bases for the optimal analgesic strategy is the use of adjuvants during the perioperative period. One of the main drugs in use is lidocaine. Aim To evaluate postoperative pain after perioperative lidocaine infusion in patients undergoing bariatric surgery and describe the presence of nausea and vomiting during the first 24 h. Methods This was a retrospective study of patients who underwent laparoscopic bariatric surgery at ABC Medical Center. Two study arms were established: a group of patients who received lidocaine infusion and a control group. The presence of pain, nausea, or vomiting was evaluated upon admission to the recovery area and 1 h and 24 h after the intervention. The normal distribution of the data was first verified via the Shapiro–Wilk test. The data are presented as medians for quantitative variables and as frequencies for qualitative variables. Results A total of 50 surgeries were performed, with a significant correlation between lidocaine infusion and lower pain values at 1 h (p = 0.04). Similarly, there was a marked trend in the presence of nausea in control group 4 (18.6%) vs. 15 (53.5%). Conclusions Our data suggest that the use of intraoperative lidocaine infusion is limited in postoperative pain management; nonetheless, it significantly improves the incidence of postoperative nausea.

The TIR (Toll/interleukin-1 receptor) domain represents a vital structural element shared by proteins with roles in immunity signalling pathways across phyla (from humans and plants to bacteria). Decades of research have finally led to identifying the key features of the molecular basis of signalling by these domains, including the formation of open-ended (filamentous) assemblies (responsible for the signalling by cooperative assembly formation mechanism, SCAF) and enzymatic activities involving the cleavage of nucleotides. We present a historical perspective of the research that led to this understanding, highlighting the roles that different structural methods played in this process: X-ray crystallography (including serial crystallography), microED (micro-crystal electron diffraction), NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) spectroscopy and cryo-EM (cryogenic electron microscopy) involving helical reconstruction and single-particle analysis. This perspective emphasizes the complementarity of different structural approaches.

Abstract

Neoplastic plasma cells (PCs) proliferation at anatomic sites dislocated from the bone marrow (BM) or their contiguous growth from osseous lesions that disrupt the cortical bone is termed extramedullary multiple myeloma (EMD). EMD still remains challenging from a therapeutic and biological perspective. Pathogenesis has not been completely clarified, and it is generally associated with high-risk cytogenetics (HRCAs). In order to emphasize the clinical and biochemical complexity of this disease, we have decided to describe the case of a patient affected by relapsed-refractory (RR) EMD, which presented as para-osseous plasmacytoma with a bi-phenotypical immunoglobulin (Ig) component and lately relapsed as soft-tissue plasmacytoma with a total immunophenotype switch. We have also hypothesized a correlation between Ig patterns and prognosis and suggested the possible inclusion of these biochemical features in the general risk assessment.

Abstract

Background: Therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) is a highly effective rescue treatment for patients with acute exacerbation of neuroimmunological disease that removes circulating autoantibodies and inflammatory components from the bloodstream. The aims of this study are to explore the safety and the effectiveness of TPE in patients with autoimmune neurological disorders. Methods: We retrospectively evaluated the frequency of adverse events (AEs) and the effectiveness of TPE using the modified Ranking Scale (mRS) in patients with acute neurological flares who underwent TPE at the University Hospital of Palermo. Results: Of 59 patients, the majority underwent TPE due to multiple sclerosis (MS) relapse. In 23.7% of cases, TPE was performed before obtaining a definite diagnosis due to the severity of the clinical presentation. After TPE, the mRS score was globally reduced (p < 0.0001), and this effect was marked in patients with MS, Guillain–Barré syndrome, and myasthenia gravis crisis but not in those with paraneoplastic syndromes. Circulating pathogenetic antibodies, younger age, and the early use of TPE were factors strongly associated with TPE effectiveness. The overall safety profile of TPE was satisfactory with an AE frequency of 15%. Conclusions: These results highlight the early use of TPE in patients with circulating pathogenetic antibodies as well as its favorable safety profile.

Abstract

PURPOSE: To test the efficacy of the puncture in the left hypochondrium as an alternative method. METHODS: Sixty-two patients randomly distributed into two groups were studied: Group LH, puncture in the left hypochondrium (n=30), and Group ML, puncture in the abdominal midline (n=32). The following were assessed: needle positioning tests, number of failed attempts at needle insertion, and time needed for creation of pneumoperitoneum. Gas flow, volume and intraperitoneal pressure were recorded at every 20 seconds, until a 12 mmHg pressure was reached inside the peritoneal cavity. RESULTS: A similar number of positive results for the needle positioning tests were observed in both groups. Two failed attempts to reach the peritoneal cavity were observed in Group ML and one in Group LH. The time necessary for the creation of pneumoperitoneum was on average 3 minutes and 46 seconds for Group LH, and 4 minutes and 2 seconds for Group ML. Average gas flow, volume and pressure were equivalent for both groups. CONCLUSION: Puncture in the left hypochondrium was as effective as puncture in the abdominal midline for the creation of pneumoperitoneum.

Field researchers often use categorical systems to record primary preloading motivations, while survey researchers use continuous systems to examine preloading motivation ratings. We tested the psychometric properties of the two systems for measuring preloading motivations. Six hundred and eight-one undergraduate students and social media recruited participants (178 males; 503 females) completed an online survey pertaining to their last preloading experience. We measured preloading motivations by the categorical and continuous systems, general drinking motivations, estimations of preloaded standard drinks and harm. Measurements of preloading motivations by categorical (primary motivation) and continuous systems (motivation ratings) were concordant. The continuous system of preloading motivations held mix concurrence with general drinking motivations, implying conceptual differences between the two constructs. 'Enhancement-based' preloading motivations had strong relationships with estimations of preloaded standard drinks, while general drinking motivations for 'coping' were strong correlates of harm. Abstract

Abstract The effects of tracheostomy on outcome as well as on intra or post-operative complications is yet to be defined. Admission of patients with tracheostomy to rehabilitation facility is at higher risk of suboptimal care and increased mortality. The aim of the study was to investigate ICU mortality, clinical outcome and quality of life up to 12 months after ICU discharge in tracheostomized critically ill patients. This is a prospective, multi-center, cohort study endorsed by Italian Society of Anesthesia, Analgesia, Reanimation, and Intensive Care (SIAARTI Prot. n° 643/13) registered in Clinicaltrial.gov (NCT01899352). Patients admitted to intensive care unit (ICU) and requiring elective tracheostomy according to physician in charge decision were included in the study. The primary outcome was ICU mortality. Secondary outcomes included risk factors for ICU mortality, prevalence of mortality at follow-up, rate of discharge from the hospital and rehabilitation, quality of life, performance status, and management of tracheostomy cannula at 3-, 6, 12-months from the day of tracheostomy. 694 critically ill patients who were tracheostomized in the ICU were included. ICU mortality was 15.8%. Age, SOFA score at the day of the tracheostomy, and days of endotracheal intubation before tracheostomy were risk factors for ICU mortality. The regression tree analysis showed that SOFA score at the day of tracheostomy and age had a preeminent role for the choice to perform the tracheostomy. Of the 694 ICU patients with tracheostomy, 469 completed the 12-months follow-up. Mortality was 33.51% at 3-months, 45.30% at 6-months, and 55.86% at 12-months. Patients with tracheostomy were less likely discharged at home but at hospital facilities or rehabilitative structures; and quality of life of patients with tracheostomy was severely compromised at 3–6 and 12 months when compared with patients without tracheostomy. In patients admitted to ICU, tracheostomy is associated with high mortality, difficult rehabilitation, and decreased quality of life. The choice to perform a tracheostomy should be carefully weighed on family burden and health-related quality of life. Clinical trial registration: Clinicaltrial.gov (NCT01899352).

Particle acceleration in microstructures driven by ultrafast solid state lasers is a rapidly evolving area of advanced accelerator research, leading to a variety of concepts based on planar-symmetric dielectric gratings, hollow core fibers, photonic crystals, and plasmonic meta-surfaces. This approach leverages well-established industrial fabrication capabilities and the commercial availability of tabletop lasers to reduce cost, with demonstrated axial accelerating fields in the GV/m range. Wide-ranging international efforts have significantly improved understanding of gradient limits, structure design, particle focusing and transport, staging, and development of compatible low-emittance electron sources. Abstract

Electron Cyclotron Resonance Ion Sources are currently the most efficient ion sources among those used in facilities dedicated to nuclear physics. The need for a more flexible magnetic field and RF injection system suggested to design and develop a different type of plasma trap, named Flexible Plasma Trap (FPT). The magnetic field of FPT is generated by means of three coils while microwaves in the range 4-7 GHz can be injected by three different inputs, one placed along the axis and two placed radially. FPT can work in different plasma heating schemes so it will be an ideal tool for studies of plasma and multidisciplinary physics. Moreover, a microwave launcher has been designed and installed to the FPT for launching microwaves with a variable tilt angle with respect to the magnetic field. This paper describes the characteristics of the FPT along with the preliminary results of plasma diagnostics.

Abstract

This paper describes three-dimensional numerical simulations and Radio Frequency (RF) measurements of wave propagation in microwave-heated magnetized plasmas of ion sources. Full-wave solution of Maxwell's equations has been addressed through the Finite Element Method (FEM) commercial software COMSOL. Our numerical model takes into account the strongly inhomogeneous and anisotropic magnetized "cold" plasma medium. The simulations reproduce the main features of the wave-plasma interaction of the Flexible Plasma Trap (FPT) that recently came into operations at INFN-LNS. A two-pins RF probe has been ad-hoc developed and used as a plasmaimmersed antenna for measuring local wave electric fields in the FPT device. The measurements of plasma electron density and RF electric field, performed for different external magnetic field configuration, allowed a direct comparison with the assumed simulation model.

Abstract

In this paper we discuss the possibility to generate and accelerate proton nanobeams in fully dielectric laser-driven accelerators (p-DLAs). High gradient on-chip optical-power dielectric laser accelerators (DLAs) could represent one of the most promising way towards future miniaturized particle accelerator. A primary challenge for DLAs are small beam apertures having a size of the order of the driving laser wavelength where low charge high-repetition (or also CW) ultralow emittance nanobeams have to be transported. For electrons beams generation and acceleration, intense research activities are ongoing, and several demonstrations have been already obtained by using electrons nanotip (or flat photocathode) sources feeding dielectric microstructures. In this article we aim at the possibility to integrate a nanosource for the generation of a light ion or proton nano-beams suitable for the subsequent acceleration into sub-relativistic (low-beta) p-DLA stages. Such integration includes the idea to use a proton dielectric radiofrequency quadrupole (p-DRFQ) for bridging the gap between the accelerator front-end and the drift-tube and high-beta sections. The paper has been prepared as a white book including state-of-art technologies and new solutions that now put the ambitious frontier of a fully nanostructured proton accelerator into reach. Conceptual studies of p-DLAs here presented could enable table-top proton nano-beams for several applications: proton beam writing, nuclear reaction analysis at sub-micrometer scales, the construction of miniaturized Proton-Boron Nuclear Fusion based Reactors, biological analysis at the micrometer scale, ion beam analysis at the sub-cellular level, mini-beams ion therapy to spare the shallow tissues, proton irradiation of transistors, compact proton linac for neutron generation.

Abstract

The objective of this thesis is to determine the extent to which the influence of transnational corporations into Kazakhstan's authoritarian law-making and labour practices has had an effect on worker disenfranchisement. The case study aims to plug two niches: labour processes both in Kazakhstan and in the global oil sector are understudied. The social sciences scholarship on Kazakhstan has concentrated on its post-Soviet legacy, on its macroeconomic dependency on oil exports, and on its authoritarian transition. Political economy studies of the oil sector have focused on its effect on a country's budget and democratic fabric, while anthropologists have explored the peculiar aspects of "living around oil." This dissertation enters a conversation with the scholarship that studies the relationship between workers, companies, and governments. Yet, rather than approaching the topic from a strict Industrial Relations standpoint, it follows the "lifetime" of the worker across the topical moments of hiring, working, and outstaffing. This study argues that both private oil companies and government institutions have devised specific strategies to cut their costs, both material and immaterial, and increase their control over their worker-citizen in Kazakhstan. Legal instruments, such as Labour Codes, or corporate intermediaries, such as manpower agencies, have worsened conditions for the workers. In addition, the thesis shows processes of co-optation of trade unions, which were undermined through adverse legislation and political pressure, and the repression of independent labour actions. In the in-depth analysis of the case of Kazakhstan, financialisation and precarisation are shown to be complementary catalysts of corporate and state policies against labour. This work offers a novel framework that could be replicated in other oil-rich contexts, where the peculiar dynamics in the hydrocarbon sector have triggered an increased precarisation of the workforce.

Aspiration of gastric contents during induction of general anesthesia remains a significant cause of mortality and morbidity in anesthesia. Recent data show that pulmonary aspiration still accounts for many cases with implications on mortality despite technical and technological evolution. Practical, ethical, and methodological issues prevent high-quality research in the setting of aspiration and rapid sequence induction/intubation, and significant controversy is ongoing. Patients’ position, drugs choice, dosing and timing, use of cricoid force, and a reliable risk assessment are widely debated with significant questions still unanswered. We focus our discussion on three approaches to promote a better understanding of rapid sequence induction/intubation and airway management decision-making. Firstly, we review how we can use qualitative and quantitative assessment of fasting status and gastric content with the point-of-care ultrasound as an integral part of preoperative evaluation and planning. Secondly, we propose using imaging-based mathematical models to study different patient positions and aspiration mechanisms, including identifying aspiration triggers. Thirdly, we promote the development of a global data collection system aiming to obtain precise epidemiological data. Therefore, we fill the gap between evidence-based medicine and experts’ opinion through easily accessible and diffused computer-based databases. A better understanding of aspiration epidemiology obtained through focused global data gathering systems, the widespread use of ultrasound-based prandial status evaluation, and development of advanced mathematical models might potentially guide safer airway management decision making in the 21st century.
