Abstract

This study introduces a new signal analysis method called SCSA, based on a semi-classical approach. The main idea in the SCSA is to interpret a pulse-shaped signal as a potential of a Schr\"odinger operator and then to use the discrete spectrum of this operator for the analysis of the signal. We present some numerical examples and the first results obtained with this method on the analysis of arterial blood pressure waveforms.

3. Inverse scattering for star-shaped nonuniform lossless electrical networks

Abstract

The Frequency Domain Reflectometry (FDR) is studied as a powerful tool to detect hard or soft faults in star-shaped networks of nonuniform lossless transmission lines. Processing the FDR measurements leads to solve an inverse scattering problem for a Schrodinger operator on a star-shaped graph. Throughout this paper, we restrict ourselves to the case of minimal experimental setup corresponding to only one diagnostic port plug. First, by studying the asymptotic behavior of the reflection coefficient in the high-frequency limit, we prove the identifiability of the geometry of this star-shaped graph: the number of edges and their lengths. The proof being rather constructive, it provides a method to detect the hard faults in the network. Next, we study the potential identification problem by inverse scattering, noting that the potentials represent the inhomogeneities due to the soft faults in the network wirings. Here, the main result states that the measurement of two reflection coefficients, associated to two different sets of boundary conditions at the extremities of the tree, determines uniquely the potentials; it is a generalization of the theorem of the two boundary spectra on an interval.

4. On the inverse scattering of star-shape LC-networks

Abstract

The study of the scattering data for a star-shape network of LC-transmission lines is transformed into the scattering analysis of a Schr\"odinger operator on the same graph. The boundary conditions coming from the Kirchhoff rules ensure the existence of a unique self-adjoint extension of the mentioned Schr\"odinger operator. While the graph consists of a number of infinite branches and a number finite ones, all joining at a central node, we provide a construction of the scattering solutions. Under non-degenerate circumstances (different wave travelling times for finite branches), we show that the study of the reflection coefficient in the high-frequency regime must provide us with the number of the infinite branches as well as the the wave travelling times for finite ones., Comment: 6 pages

5. New Cardiovascular Indices Based on a Nonlinear Spectral Analysis of Arterial Blood Pressure Waveforms

Abstract

A new method for analyzing arterial blood pressure is presented in this report. The technique is based on the scattering transform and consists in solving the spectral problem associated to a one-dimensional Schr\"odinger operator with a potential depending linearly upon the pressure. This potential is then expressed with the discrete spectrum which includes negative eigenvalues and corresponds to the interacting components of an N-soliton. The approach is similar to a nonlinear Fourier transform where the solitons play the role of sine and cosine components. The method provides new cardiovascular indices that seem to contain relevant physiological information. We first show how to use this approach to decompose the arterial blood pressure pulse into elementary waves and to reconstruct it or to separate its systolic and diastolic phases. Then we analyse the parameters computed from this technique in two physiological conditions, the head-up 60 degrees tilt test and the isometric handgrip test, widely used for studying short term cardiovascular control. Promising results are obtained.

Abstract

During each ovarian cycle, only a definite number of follicles ovulate, while the others undergo a degeneration process called atresia. We have designed a multi-scale mathematical model where ovulation and atresia result from a hormonal controlled selection process. A 2D-conservation law describes the age and maturity structuration of the follicular cell population. In this paper, we focus on the operating mode of the control, through the study of the characteristics of the conservation law. We describe in particular the set of microscopic initial conditions leading to the macroscopic phenomenon of either ovulation or atresia, in the framework of backwards reachable sets theory.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to propose a new algorithm for T-wave end location in electrocardiograms, mainly through the computation of an indicator related to the area covered by the T-wave curve. Based on simple assumptions, essentially on the concavity of the T-wave form, it is formally proved that the maximum of the computed indicator inside each cardiac cycle coincides with the T-wave end. Moreover, the algorithm is robust to acquisition noise, to wave form morphological variations and to baseline wander. It is also computationally very simple: the main computation can be implemented as a simple finite impulse response filter. When evaluated with the PhysioNet QT database in terms of the mean and the standard deviation of the T-wave end location errors, the proposed algorithm outperforms the other algorithms evaluated with the same database, according to the most recent available publications up to our knowledge. Abstract

International audience; Cardiac resynchronisation therapy (CRT) is an effective treatment for patients with congestive heart failure and a wide QRS complex. However, up to 30% of patients are non-responders to therapy in terms of exercise capacity or left ventricular reverse remodelling. A number of controversies still remain surrounding patient selection, targeted lead implantation and optimisation of this important treatment. The development of biophysical models to predict the response to CRT represents a potential strategy to address these issues. In this article, we present how the personalisation of an electromechanicalmodel of the myocardium can predict the acute haemodynamic changes associated with CRT. In order to introduce such an approach as a clinical application, we needed to design models that can be individualised from images and electrophysiological mapping of the left ventricle. In this paper the personalisation of the anatomy, the electrophysiology, the kinematics and the mechanics are described. The acuteeffects of pacing on pressure development were predicted with the in silicomodel for several pacing conditions on two patients, achieving good agreement with invasive haemodynamic measurements: the mean error on dP/dtmax is 47.5 ± 35 mm Hg s−1, less than 5% error. These promising results demonstrate the potential of physiological models personalised from images and electrophysiology signals to improve patient selection and plan CRT.

Abstract

LNT and SCR are two leading candidates for Diesel exhaust nitrogen oxide (NOx) after-treatment. The present paper investigates the modeling of the architecture combining the two systems in series with NO/NO2 differentiation, induced directly by the widening and hardening of the future standards. Model reduction is performed to allow for real-time automotive applications. Based on simplified chemistry and slow-fast dynamics assumptions, a complete reduced model is proposed, suitable for on-board diagnosis and model-based control. Validation has been achieved through extensive experiments.; Les, Piège à NOx et SCR sont deux systèmes catalytiques à fort potentiel de réduction des émissions d'oxydes d'azote. Le document décrit la modélisation de ces éléments de post-traitement des gaz d'échappement, dans le cadre de l'étude d'une architecture combinant les deux systèmes mis en série. La particularité de ce travail repose sur la différentiation NO/NO2 dans la modélisation, induite par l'apparition de nouvelles normes plus sévères et couvrant plus d'espèces chimiques. Une réduction d'ordre des modèles basée sur la séparation des échelles de temps est ensuite appliquée en vue du respect des contraintes de calcul en temps réel émanant de l'industrie automobile. Ainsi, à partir de ces hypothèses et après proposition d'un schéma cinétique simplifié, un modèle d'ordre réduit adapté à l'élaboration de stratégies de contrôle est proposé et validé avec des essais expérimentaux.

Issue 2 Supplement - September 2010; International audience; Considerable controversy has emerged as to whether tight glucose control (TGC) is warranted in all critically ill adult patients. Recently, a new blood glucose upper limit (10 mmol/L) has been assessed as more appropriate. Rather than blood glucose target ranges, algorithms used to achieve TGC should be numerically evaluated before initiating clinical trials (preclinical validation test). Our purpose was to assess performances of TGC algorithms in realistic virtual ICU patients.

International audience; With the fast development of electric and electronic components in modern engineering systems, the reliability of electric transmission lines (TL) is becoming a crucial issue. The increasing number of electric connection failures requires research on diagnosis technologies. For example, advanced reflectometry, by analyzing the reflection of electric waves observed at one end of a TL, provides an efficient solution for the diagnosis of hard faults (open or short circuits) in a single TL, whereas the diagnosis of soft faults in wired electric networks is still an open problem. The purpose of this paper is to study a reduced mathematical model of wired electric network, which will constitute a basis for the development of methods for soft fault diagnosis. The proposed model is also useful for numerical simulation of the studied networks, by computing reflection coefficients, as well as voltage and current waves.

6 pages; International audience; Les échangeurs de chaleur sont des composants fréquemment uti- lisés dans les systèmes de refroidissement. Ils représentent des éléments clé de la maîtrise de l'énergie des procédés et des systèmes industriels (recircu- lation des gaz EGR dans les circuits haute et basse pressions des moteurs thermiques, confort thermique, refroidissement des machines électriques et des systèmes avec piles à combustibles). Dans cet article, nous présentons un exemple d'application pour un système pile à combustible avec refor- meur embarqué, où les contraintes thermiques sont sévères et nécessitent un contrôle performant des échangeurs de chaleur. La démarche suivie peut être réutilisée pour des circuits de refroidissement conventionnel sur véhi- cule équipé de GMP thermique. Tout d'abord, nous présentons un modèle 0D pour la commande d'un échangeur de chaleur. Nous proposons ensuite une commande non-linéaire de ce système. Les performances de cette commande sont comparées à un contrôleur classique de type PI. Nous proposons également un observateur des états non mesurés de l'échangeur dans une optique de réduction du nombre de capteurs ou de diagnostic.

Abstract

International audience; Predictive cardiac electrophysiology models can provide a substantial aid in the success of the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias. Sufficiently accurate model predictions highly depend on the personalisation of the model i.e. estimation of patient-specific model parameters. In this paper, we evaluate the prediction ability of a simplified ionic 3D cardiac electrophysiology model, the Mitchell-Schaeffer model (2003), after personalisation. The personalisation is performed by optimising the model parameters, using the epicardial surface depolarisation and repolarisation maps obtained ex-vivo from optical imaging of large porcine healthy heart. We also evaluate the sensitivity of the personalisation method to a pacing location and the estimated parameter values. This is done by comparing the personalisation results obtained with left ventricle endocardial pacing location to those obtained with right ventricle epicardial pacing location. Later, using the personalised electrophysiology model, we predict the volumetric depolarisation and repolarisation time isochrones for right ventricle endocardial and left ventricle epicardial pacing locations and evaluate the epicardial isochrones against the actual maps obtained from the optical data.

Abstract

International audience; To simulate electric transmission lines with skin effect, an existing reduced order differential model of skin effect is numerically optimized. This model corresponds to a simple equivalent electric circuit in the form of a ladder, consisting of frequency independent electric elements. The accuracy of the model is improved by optimization of model parameters with an algorithm for system identification. The resulting simulator is numerically efficient and particularly suitable for the study of time domain reflectometry.

Abstract

A new method for analyzing arterial blood pressure is presented in this article. The technique is based on the scattering transform and consists in solving the spectral problem associated to a one-dimensional Schrödinger operator with a potential depending linearly upon the pressure. This potential is then expressed with the discrete spectrum which includes negative eigenvalues and corresponds to the interacting components of an N-soliton. The approach is similar to a nonlinear Fourier transform where the solitons play the role of sine and cosine components. The method provides new cardiovascular indices that seem to have meaningful physiological information, especially about the stroke volume and the ventricular contractility. We first show how to reconstruct the arterial blood pressure waves and separate its systolic and diastolic phases using this approach. Then we analyse the parameters computed from this technique in two physiological conditions, the head-up 60 degrees tilt test and the isometric handgrip test, widely used for studying short term cardiovascular control. Promising results are obtained.
