This article explores anticipation as a temporal structure in digital platforms. It contributes to the growing research of platformisation of everyday life by focusing on temporality as a central dimension of platform power, a key mechanism tying participants by structuring intimacies, socialities, and relations that platforms enable and engender. The article shows how the temporality of foreboding, prospecting and speculating about one’s own and other’s social media presence and actions permeates the user experience. Studying media diaries and interviews with participants from different social and occupational groups (politicians, actors, the unemployed, undocumented migrants), the article analyses anticipation as a structure of feeling, as time- and energy-consuming digital labor and as the embodiment of platform power’s mechanisms. While anticipation has previously been examined as operational logics of the platform economy, this article demonstrates how anticipation also concerns ordinary media users on the level of their everyday life worlds, experiences and practices. peerReviewed

This article explores mediated listening from the perspective of intimacy during the first weeks of the coronavirus pandemic. The theoretical frame builds on the literature on listening and presence in mediated environments, audience engagement, and intimacy as meaningful connections. Methodologically, the study is connective ethnography, and the data was collected by collaborative autoethnography. Our data show that listening was an individual sensemaking strategy of the outside world and a means to form connectedness. Threading between different screens on digital platforms caused the collapse of public and private contexts, and through these, particular types of intimacy arose. When the position of academic mothers is often that of a ‘knower,’ the severe crisis compels them to look for receptive ways of knowing, such as careful listening of others. Listening is a means to form belonging and understanding, but from a silent position. We should pay more attention to the silent presences and audiences in contemporary mediated environments., L’article explore l’écoute médiatisée du point de vue de l’intimité pendant les premières semaines de la pandémie de coronavirus. Le cadre théorique s’appuie sur la littérature, sur l’écoute et la présence dans des environnements médiatisés, l’engagement du public et l’intimité en tant que connexions significatives. Méthodologiquement, l’étude est une ethnographie connective, les données ont été collectées par autoethnographie collaborative. Nos données montrent que l’écoute était une stratégie de perception individuelle du monde extérieur et un moyen de former une connectivité. Le filetage entre différents écrans sur les plates-formes numériques a provoqué l’effondrement de contextes publics et privés et, à travers ces derniers, des types particuliers d’intimité sont apparus. Lorsque la position des mères universitaires est souvent celle d’une “connaisseuse”, la crise grave les oblige à rechercher de manières réceptives de savoir, comme une écoute attentive des autres. L’écoute est un moyen de former l’appartenance et la compréhension, mais à partir d’une position silencieuse. Cela suggère que nous devrions accorder plus d’attention aux présences silencieuses et aux publics, dans les environnements médiatisés contemporains.

The study focuses on the Finnish home makeover shows Inno (2004 , Nelonen) and Kodin kääntöpiiri (2001 2005; YLE TV2) and their episodes broadcast in spring 2004. The research material also includes the websites of both shows and messages concerning Inno from an online discussion forum. As people decorate their homes and reflect on them, they engage in negotiations of taste and in the construction of the ideal self. The main question of the study is: how are representations of the gendered self produced in home makeover shows? The broader theoretical and methodological context of the study is based on intersectionality, or simultaneous study of different identity categories. In this study, the main focus is on the intersections of gender, class and sexuality. Hence, the secondary research question is: how do ways of doing gender intersect with producing the ideas of class and sexuality in the representations of home makeover shows? The theoretical framework of the study combines Judith Butler s theory of gender performativity and Pierre Bourdieu s theory of taste. The analysis is founded upon a close reading focusing on the details and ambiguous meanings contained in the televisual representation. Home makeover shows are explored as a part of contemporary television culture, which is characterised by a significant increase in the number of both television channels and global television formats, as well as the hybridisation of programme types. Researchers on lifestyle television have paid attention to male designers and their ability to reconstruct meanings related to domesticity and home decoration as feminine spheres. The dissertation contributes to this discussion by analysing the representations of the male interior decorator in Inno and the four female interior decorators in Kodin kääntöpiiri. The focus is on the professional self and how it is both gendered and defined as an arbiter of taste. The programme concepts produce the impression that the makeover homes and their occupants are ordinary . The manufactured sense of ordinariness often conceals differences between the participants. One argument of the study is that the ordinariness of participants on lifestyle television should not be taken for granted without further reflection on the implications of labeling something as ordinary. Updating of interior decoration in home makeover shows can be interpreted as an area of doing gender that requires deliberation, effort, expert knowledge and a sufficient budget. The ideal lay decorator is portrayed as culturally omnivorous, brave and receptive to new ideas. The ability to reflect on ways of representing masculinity and femininity through decoration is also implied. In home makeover shows, greater self-awareness regarding the ways in which gender is produced does not lead to repeating gender differently. The idea of normative heterosexuality is in a hegemonic position in the representations of the participants. In Inno and Kodin kääntöpiiri questions of class are not made explicit. However, the idea of class is produced indirectly e.g. by describing the apartments and houses of the participants, by discussing their hobbies or interest in cultural products. In Inno, home decoration is primarily depicted as an individualistic consumer choice, while in Kodin kääntöpiiri it is often defined as a way to strengthen the ties of nuclear families. In Kodin kääntöpiiri, the ethos of familism is combined with pleasures gained from consumption and DIY activities. As a whole, the multidisciplinary study indicates a great number of differences between the two shows. Elämäntyylitelevisioksi kutsutusta ohjelmaryppäästä on tullut näkyvä osa suomalaista televisiota 2000-luvun alkuvuosina. Sen keskeinen alakategoria on muutostelevisio, jonka ohjelmakonseptit perustuvat ennen ja jälkeen -rakenteelle sekä jakoon asiantuntijoihin ja "maallikko-osallistujiin". Tutkimus keskittyy suomalaisiin sisustamista käsitteleviin kodinmuutosohjelmiin: Innoon (2004 , Nelonen) ja Kodin kääntöpiiriin (2001 2005, YLE TV2). Tutkimuksen ensisijainen aineisto koostuu sarjojen kevätkaudella 2004 esitetyistä jaksoista. Kodinmuutosohjelmissa on kyse itsen esittämisestä ja itsen ihannekuvan työstämisestä kulutusvalinnoin ja sisustusasiantuntijan opastuksen kautta. Tutkimuksen pääkysymys on: miten ja millaisia sukupuolitetun itsen esityksiä kodinmuutosohjelmissa tuotetaan? Sen ohella kysytään: kuinka sukupuolen tekemisen tavat risteävät yhteiskuntaluokkaisuuden ja seksuaalisuuden ulottuvuuksien kanssa? Kodinmuutosohjelmissa rakennetaan vaikutelmaa muutoskotien ja niiden asukkaiden tavallisuudesta. Vaikka se kytkeytyy usein osallistujien asumiseen omistusasunnoissa, keskiluokkaisiin ammattinimikkeisiin ja heteroseksuaalisuuteen, niin kyse on ennen kaikkea tavallisuuden aktiivisesta tuottamisesta, tavallistamisesta. Ihanteellisen maallikkosisustajan hahmo näyttäytyy avoimena, rohkeana ja vastaanottavaisena uusille ideoille. Sisustuksen päivittäminen määrittyy sukupuolen tekemisen alueeksi, joka edellyttää harkintaa, vaivannäköä, asiantuntijatietämystä ja riittävää budjettia. Siihen yhdistyy refleksiivinen suhde sukupuolen esityksellisyyteen, mikä koskee niin naisia kuin miehiä. Naisosallistujien kohdalla sisustaminen kuvataan usein pariskuntaisuuden ja perheyden tuottamiseksi. Kodinmuutosohjelmien makuerottautumisessa on pitkälti kyse kulttuuriseksi kaikkiruokaisuudeksi kutsutusta asennoitumisesta. Ideaa luokkaisuudesta tuotetaan myös kuvauksilla muutettavien asuntojen koosta, asuintalojen iästä, asuntojen hallintaperusteista sekä maininnoilla yksilöiden matkustelevuudesta tai kotiseutukeskeisyydestä. Elämäntyylitelevision tutkimuksessa on kiinnitetty huomiota miespuolisiin asiantuntijoihin ja heidän kykyyn neuvotella uudelleen merkityksiä, jotka liittyvät kodin ja kodinsisustuksen määrittymiseen feminiinisinä sfääreinä. Tutkimus osallistuu tähän keskusteluun analysoimalla Innon miespuolisen sisustusasiantuntijan ja Kodin kääntöpiirin neljän naispuolisen sisustusasiantuntijan hahmoja. Tutkimus tuo esiin monia eroja näiden kahden samaan ohjelmatyyppiin lukeutuvan tv-sarjan välillä. Kyse on ohjelmakonseptoinnin tuottamista eroista, jotka osin liittyvät julkisen palvelun television ja kaupallisen television sekä kanavaprofiilien välisiin eroihin. Tutkimuksessa pohditaan myös sitä, mihin seikkoihin ohjelmatyypin nousu 2000-luvun alkuvuosina liittyy.
