Abstract

Double diffusive natural convection (DDNC) is caused by temperature and concentration gradients in buoyancy-driven flows which is applicable in printing, HVAC, and solar collectors. A numerical study is accomplished to investigate DDNC of a hybrid Cu–Al2O3-water nanoliquid inside an H-shaped cavity with a baffle at the top wall. The Finite Element technique and Boussinesq approximation with no slip wall condition are applied to solve the governing equations. The left and right walls are at the cold temperature, while the inner up and down ribs and baffle are at constant heat flux, and other walls are insulated. The effect of Rayleigh number (104-106), Lewis number (2–8), and Buoyancy ratio (1–3) on Nusselt, Sherwood numbers, and entropy generation is investigated. Besides, the effects of baffle inclination angle (−60°to 60°) and also the aspect ratio of the corrugated bottom rib (0.375, 0.75, 1.5) on the mean Sherwood and Nusselt numbers are investigated to find the optimum geometry with the highest heat transfer performance. The results depict that the geometry with baffle angle −60°and with no corrugation has the best Nuavg; however, the geometry with baffle angle +60° and with no corrugation has the best Shavg.

Abstract

The compression process in flare gas recovery, commonly carried by compressors, is the costliest. The use of an integrated gas-gas ejector system instead of a compressor is proposed and studied technically and economically in this paper. Thus, the flare gas recovery process modeling, including the gas sweetening unit, is performed for both compressor and ejector systems. Different arrangements of the integrated ejector system in the form of multi-stage ejectors (series) in parallel branches are also investigated. To find the geometry of ejectors for simulation of integrated ejector system in Aspen HYSYS, as well as the prediction of the ejector performance under different pressures and mass flow rates of inlet gas, a computer code was developed in MATLAB software. Results of the economic analysis demonstrated the compression method with a parallel three-branch arrangement (containing a three-stage ejector in each branch) were the most appropriate solution in the flare gas recovery of a typical oil refinery plant, with an investment cost of 4.84 $M and accepted payback period of 2 years and the recovery of approximately 90% flare gas volume during normal operation.

3. Energy, exergy, and exergoeconomic analysis of a polygeneration system driven by solar energy with a thermal energy storage tank for power, heating, and freshwater production

Abstract

A trigeneration system based on parabolic trough solar collectors and thermal energy storage tank is devised for simultaneous power, heating, and freshwater production. The proposed system is analyzed from energy, exergy, and exergoeconomic viewpoints. Moreover, a parametric analysis was applied to evaluate the effects of some basic thermodynamic parameters cycle performance. Also, the optimum performance of the system in two optimization scenarios is found by applying the multi-objective genetic algorithm and using LINMAP decision-making method. The results revealed that the system could yield net output power, heating capacity, and freshwater rate of 370.1 kW , 2423 kW , and 1.34 kg / s , respectively. The energy and exergy efficiencies, coefficient of performance, and the total cost rate of the product are obtained as 34.78 % , 13.42 % , 0.49 , and 176.73 $ / h . Also, it is revealed that the solar section is responsible for 56 % of the overall exergy destruction rate. The parametric study showed that increment of pinch point temperature of RORC evaporator results in lower energy and exergy efficiencies and higher total cost rate of products. Also, the final optimal solution selected by the LINMAP method is a maximum exergy efficiency of 19.87 % and the minimum cost rate of 157.73 $ / h for the second optimization scenario.
