Abstract

We initiate a study of the Euclidean distance degree in the context of sparse polynomials. Specifically, we consider a hypersurface [Formula omitted] defined by a polynomial f that is general given its support, such that the support contains the origin. We show that the Euclidean distance degree of [Formula omitted] equals the mixed volume of the Newton polytopes of the associated Lagrange multiplier equations. We discuss the implication of our result for computational complexity and give a formula for the Euclidean distance degree when the Newton polytope is a rectangular parallelepiped., Author(s): P. Abstract

The electron energy-loss function of graphite is studied for momentum transfers q beyond the first Brillouin zone. We find that near Bragg reflections the spectra can change drastically for very small variations in q. The effect is investigated by means of first principle calculations in the random phase approximation and confirmed by inelastic x-ray scattering measurements of the dynamic structure factor S(q,\omega). We demonstrate that this effect is governed by crystal local field effects and the stacking of graphite. It is traced back to a strong coupling between excitations at small and large momentum transfers.

Abstract

We have measured a strictly linear pi-plasmon dispersion along the axis of individualized single wall carbon nanotubes, which is completely different from plasmon dispersions of graphite or bundled single wall carbon nanotubes. Comparative ab initio studies on graphene based systems allow us to reproduce the different dispersions. This suggests that individualized nanotubes provide viable experimental access to collective electronic excitations of graphene, and it validates the use of graphene to understand electronic excitations of carbon nanotubes. In particular, the calculations reveal that local field effects (LFE) cause a mixing of electronic transitions, including the 'Dirac cone', resulting in the observed linear dispersion.

Abstract

The use of quality indicators is crucial in selling plums in more distant markets and the evaluation of freshness through multiple index is fundamental to evaluate the goodness of the storage technique. In this study we evaluated the quality of two european plums cultivars ('Ramasin' and 'Ariddo di Core' with purple and yellow flesh colour respectively) after modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) storage, through the selection of the most appropriate indicators. The headspace gas composition, the flesh fruit firmness (FFF), the soluble solid content (SSC), the titratable acidity (TA), the colour and the chlorophyll content of plums wrapped with 5 different films (F1, F2, F3, F4 and F5) were evaluated for up 21 days of storage (at 1±1°C and 90-95% relative humidity). For both cultivars, the multilayered films (F1 and F2, 90 and 65 μm respectively) offered better effectiveness over other films. The total chlorophyll concentration, showing a good correlation with the colorimetric parameters of luminance (L∗) and chroma (respectively R2=0.92 and R2= 0.96) confirmed, in the case of the Ariddo di Core cultivar, the results obtained by monitoring other parameters thus highlighting the usefulness of integrating multiple indexes in evaluating the performance of the storage methods used.

Abstract

Time-dependent density-functional theory (TDDFT) is widely used in the study of linear response properties of finite systems. However, there are difficulties in properly describing excited states, which have double- and higher-excitation characters, which are particularly important in molecules with an open-shell ground state. These states would be described if the exact TDDFT kernel were used; however, within the adiabatic approximation to the exchange-correlation (xc) kernel, the calculated excitation energies have a strict single-excitation character and are fewer than the real ones. A frequency-dependent xc kernel could create extra poles in the response function, which would describe states with a multiple-excitation character. We introduce a frequency-dependent xc kernel, which can reproduce, within TDDFT, double excitations in finite systems. In order to achieve this, we use the Bethe–Salpeter equation with a dynamically screened Coulomb interaction W(ω), which can describe these excitations, and from this we obtain the xc kernel. Using a two-electron model system, we show that the frequency dependence of W does indeed introduce the double excitations that are instead absent in any static approximation of the electron-hole screening. Abstract

Nonostante le sue ridotte dimensioni, Linosa presenta un’estrema complessità, legata soprattutto al diverso periodo di abbandono delle colture agrarie terrazzate che un tempo caratterizzavano un’ampia porzione dell’isola. Gran parte del suo territorio presenta tuttora livelli di naturalità da discreti a eccezionali, soprattutto per via dell’integrità delle comunità legate alle rocce affioranti ed ai substrati incoerenti di natura vulcanica. È probabile che l’origine vulcanica dei suoli di Linosa fa sì che l’intensa trasformazione del suo paesaggio naturale, testimoniata dai terrazzamenti che si spingono sulle pendici dei monti, non abbia del tutto eliminato la presenza di lembi più o meno cospicui di formazioni pre-forestali come è successo sulla calcarea Lampedusa. L’elemento fondamentale dell’agricoltura linosana è (o è stato) il ficodindia.

Abstract

In observance of the criteria stated in the previous section <> and the studies carried out on the natural and agriculture heritage the intervention consistend on the plaintinf of some Lampedusa's spontaneous shrubs propagated by Lagambiente or by the nursery of the Regional Rural and Territorial Department of the Sicilian Region (formerly Regional Forestry Office Department). The plants that were planted were: Mastic (60), Periploca (36), Juniper (20), Myrtle (24), Olivastro (5), Carob (10), Caper (10). More complex is what has been done for the realization of the orchard. On the basis of investigations carried out as part of a research project of the RDP 2007/2013, Measure 214/2 Action A <> and in the field of the project <> on the Pelagie's fruit's history and diversity, a hundred trees were planted. Some of these have been grafted with old varieties already in the nursery, others will be grafted later. It was decided to plant three rootstock trees for each variety identified according to the diagram shown in the table below.

Abstract

Thirty four plum local varieties and accessions obtained from different growing area of the Sicilian island were analyzed for their qualitative and nutraceutical properties and three commercialcultivar were used as references. These properties included the fruit fresh weight (g), the pulp firmness (FFF), the total soluble solids (TSS), the titratable acidity (TA), the total anthocyanins,the phenolics content and the antioxidant activity.This preliminary study showed significantly differeces among the plums; Zuccarato giallo and Prunu Niuru presented TSS higher than the commercial cultivars (24.9 and 21.6 °Brix respectively)and interesting data obtained on the nutraceutical compounds values suggested these local cultivars as sources of polyphenols (Zuccarato giallo with 663 mg GA/100 gFW) and naturalantioxidants (Pruno Regina with 47.46 Fe2+/100 gFW). The characterization of these plums could represent also an important resource for the international activity in the genetic improving andthe collection of the more interesting quality traits could be useful for improving the Prunus database actually in use.

Abstract

Biodiversity is a unique and precious heritage: generic but also cultural, social and economic. Its drastic curtailment, however, puts at risk the survival of local farming systems, and this is even more so in fragile socio-economic contexts where it risks translating into conditions of food insecurity and poverty. From the elementary level of the gene, rising in complexity up to the ecosystem, it is therefore a central element in defining first the resistance and then the resilience of the system, and by the first term meaning the degree of resistance to a disruption that distances it from the initial state of equilibrium and by the second the capacity of a system to return to guaranteeing minimum standards following a disturbance, the capacity to get back on ones feet after a fall. It seems to be crucial, then, at a time when cooperation development projects that operate in various ways to safeguard and promote biodiversity are far more numerous, to intervene to preserve and restore the local biodiversity in order to avert future problems, and even curb them ahead of time, using resilience as an approach for managing the system we are dealing with (natural or heavily affected by human activity). In any event, this is a passage that is not routine, which makes it necessary to look at the ecosystem, at its various components, both natural and human. In the light of these preliminary remarks, the article will analyse the potentiality for applying, also in the field of development cooperation, the theoretical approach including empirical methods and instruments represented by the Diversified Farming Systems DFS), where the starting point is diversity and diversification as functional elements in the construction of resilient farming systems.

Abstract

International audience; We show the application of an efficient numerical scheme to obtain the independent-particle dynamic polarizability matrix chi((0))(r,r('),omega), a key quantity in modern ab initio excited-state calculations. The method has been applied to the study of the optical response of a realistic oxidized silicon surface, including the effects of crystal local fields. The latter are shown to substantially increase the surface optical anisotropy in the energy range below the bulk band gap. Our implementation in a large-scale ab initio computational code allows us to make a quantitative study of the CPU time scaling with respect to the system size, and demonstrates the real potential of the method for the study of excited states in large systems.

Abstract

International audience; We present calculations of the absorption spectrum of semiconductors and insulators comparing various approaches: (i) the two-particle Bethe-Salpeter equation of many-body perturbation theory; (ii) time-dependent density-functional theory using a recently developed kernel that was derived from the Bethe-Salpeter equation; and (iii) a mapping scheme that we propose in the present work and that allows one to derive different parameter-free approximations to (ii). We show that all methods reproduce the series of bound excitons in the gap of solid argon, as well as continuum excitons in semiconductors. This is even true for the simplest static approximation, which allows us to reformulate the equations in a way such that the scaling of the calculations with the number of atoms equals the one of the random phase approximation
