Abstract

This paper reports on the instrumentation and expertise developed within the INFN-CHNet network for X-ray and neutron imaging, which enable non-invasive identification of materials and production processes in the field of cultural heritage. INFN-CHNet is the network of the Italian National Institute of Nuclear Physics specifically dedicated to the development and application of scientific methods and technologies to cultural heritage. This article focuses on portable MA-XRF scanners, often complemented by additional techniques, PIXE imaging on a newly developed portable accelerator, X-ray radiography and tomography, exploited to their full potential also through the use of portable systems, and neutron radiography and tomography, which require large-scale facilities. In many respects, the information obtained from X-ray and neutron-based methods is complementary, facilitating a comprehensive characterisation of materials, structures, and manufacturing techniques.

Abstract

Detectors are a key feature of the contemporary scientific approach to cultural heritage (CH), both for diagnostics and conservation. INFN-CHNet is the network of the Italian National Institute of Nuclear Physics that develops and applies new instrumentation for the study of CH. This process results in both optimized traditional state-of-the-art and highly innovative detection setups for spectrometric techniques. Examples of the former are X-rays, gamma-rays, visible-light and particles spectrometers tailored for CH applications, with optimized performances, reliability, weight, transportability, cost, absorbed power, and complementarity with other techniques. Regarding the latter, examples are ARDESIA, the array of detectors at the DAFNE-Light facility, the MAXRS detection setup at the Riken-RAL muon beamline and the imaging facilities at the LENA Laboratory. Paths for next-generation instruments have been suggested, as in the case of the X-ray Superconductive Detectors and X-ray Microcalorimeter Spectrometers, allowing astonishing improvement in energy resolution. Many issues in CH can now be addressed thanks to scientific techniques exploiting the existing detectors, while many others are still to be addressed and require the development of new approaches and detectors.

Abstract

The new nuclides 165Pt and 170Hg were produced in the reactions 92Mo(78Kr,5n) and 96Ru(78Kr,4n) at bombarding energies of 418 MeV and 390 MeV, respectively. For 170Hg an α-particle energy of Eα=7590(30)keV and half-life of t1/2=0.08+0.40−0.04ms were deduced, while for 165Pt the corresponding values were 7272(14) keV and 0.26+0.26−0.09ms. Comparison of the reduced α-decay widths with systematics indicates that both α decays are unhindered. Although combining the measured α-decay Q values with extrapolated masses suggests that both new nuclides are unbound to two-proton emission by more than 1 MeV, their α-decay half-lives are too short for this decay mode to compete. Improved data were also obtained for 166,167Pt, produced via the 96Ru(78Kr,α4n) and 96Ru(78Kr,α3n) reactions at bombarding energies of 390 MeV and 418 MeV. peerReviewed

Abstract

12. Spatially controlled ripple formation in the HIM using Low Voltages and High Temperatures

Abstract

Ripple formation is a well known phenomenon that is observed for many materials under low energy ion bombardment. Often broad beam noble gas ion irradiation using energies of a few keV is employed to create these self-organized patterns on various metal, semiconductor and insulator surfaces. In addition to the fundamental interest in the formation and evolution of these structures they can be utilized in a number of new applications. Creating nano scale periodic roughness can be of interest for various microfluidic applications or to control friction in new MEMS and NEMS devices. However, these applications are not realized at their full potential today as the required sub micron patterning which can not easily be realized using broad beams. Here, we present for the first time ripple patterns that have been created on the GaAs(001) surface using 5 keV Ne ions and elevated temperatures of up to 600 K in a Helium Ion Microscope (HIM). We will present the home built sample heater that can be loaded through the load lock of the Carl Zeiss Orion NanoFab and describe the influence on the device performance, as well as HIM operation at 5 keV. The evolution of the ripple wavelength changes from 30 nm at low 1e17 Ne/cm² to 80 nm at 1e18 Ne/cm². The orientation of the ripples with respect to the shape can be changed by rotating the pattern on the surface and the influence of the geometrical constrains of the irradiated area on the ripple pattern is studied.

HIM is well known for its outstanding imaging and micro and nano fabrication capabilities. However, most results so far have been achieved at room temperature and by using energies between 25 keV and 35 keV. For this work we lowered the acceleration voltage to below 5 keV while maintaining an acceptable lateral resolution in the nm range .

Abstract

Detectors are a key feature of the contemporary scientific approach to cultural heritage (CH), both for diagnostics and conservation. INFN-CHNet is the network of the Italian National Institute of Nuclear Physics that develops and applies new instrumentation for the study of CH. This process results in both optimized traditional state-of-the-art and highly innovative detection setups for spectrometric techniques. Examples of the former are X-rays, gamma-rays, visible-light and particles spectrometers tailored for CH applications, with optimized performances, reliability, weight, transportability, cost, absorbed power, and complementarity with other techniques. Regarding the latter, examples are ARDESIA, the array of detectors at the DAΦNE-Light facility, the MAXRS detection setup at the Riken-RAL muon beamline and the imaging facilities at the LENA Laboratory. Paths for next-generation instruments have been suggested, as in the case of the X-ray Superconductive Detectors and X-ray Microcalorimeter Spectrometers, allowing astonishing improvement in energy resolution. Many issues in CH can now be addressed thanks to scientific techniques exploiting the existing detectors, while many others are still to be addressed and require the development of new approaches and detectors.
