Abstract This study investigates the synergistic effects of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) and melatonin (MT) on Fragaria × ananassa (strawberry) plants under drought stress, focusing on growth, fruit biomass, and stress tolerance. ZnO NPs enhance nutrient uptake and stress resistance, while MT regulates growth hormones and boosts photosynthetic efficiency. Seven treatments were evaluated: T1 (no stress, 0.5 g/L ZnO NPs + 0.1 g/L MT), T2 (no stress, 0.5 g/L ZnO NPs), T3 (no stress, 0.1 g/L MT), T4 (drought stress, no application), T5 (drought stress, 0.5 g/L ZnO NPs + 0.1 g/L MT), T6 (drought stress, 0.5 g/L ZnO NPs), and T7 (drought stress, 0.1 g/L MT). Growth and stress parameters included shoot/root length, fruit biomass, bud number, chlorophyll content, oxidative stress markers (H₂O₂, MDA), and antioxidant enzyme activities in the leaves of Fragaria × ananassa. The combined treatment (ZnO NPs + MT) consistently outperformed others, achieving the highest growth metrics under both conditions: shoot length (22.33 ± 1.53 cm non-stress, 15.00 ± 1.53 cm drought), root length (18.67 ± 1.53 cm non-stress, 12.00 ± 1.53 cm drought), and fruit biomass (9.55 ± 0.31 g non-stress, 5.02 ± 0.23 g drought). Bud formation peaked at 3.33 ± 0.58 buds/plant non-stress and 2.00 ± 0.00 buds/plant drought. Under drought, the combined treatment also enhanced chlorophyll content (2.47 ± 0.20 mg/g FW) and significantly reduced H₂O₂ (28.67 ± 2.52 µmol/g FW) and MDA (4.21 ± 0.10 µmol/g FW) levels, while maximizing antioxidant enzyme activities (SOD: 121.67 ± 7.64 U/g FW, POD: 206.33 ± 14.84 U/g FW, CAT: 48.00 ± 3.61 U/g FW). These findings highlight the combined application of ZnO NPs and MT as a promising strategy to enhance growth and stress tolerance in strawberry plants, warranting further research on optimized concentrations, delivery methods, and molecular mechanisms.

Abstract Maize (Zea mays L.) faces significant challenges to its growth and productivity from heavy metal stress, particularly Chromium (Cr) stress, which induces reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and damages photosynthetic tissues. This study aimed to investigate the effects of fulvic acid (FA) application, via foliar spray or root irrigation, on mitigating chromium stress in maize by evaluating its impact on antioxidant activity and growth parameters. Two maize varieties, P3939 and 30Y87, were subjected to chromium stress (CrCl3·6H2O) at concentrations of 300 µM and 100 µM for a duration of 5 weeks. The experiment was conducted in a wire house under natural environmental conditions at the Seed Centre, Institute of Botany, University of the Punjab, Lahore, Pakistan. Physiological assessments included electrolyte leakage, chlorophyll pigment content, malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, and activities of antioxidant enzymes such as catalase (CAT), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and guaiacol peroxidase (GPX) in maize leaves. Growth parameters were also monitored. The results revealed that chromium stress significantly reduced chlorophyll content and increased oxidative stress, as evidenced by elevated MDA levels and electrolyte leakage. However, FA application notably mitigated these effects: chlorophyll content improved by 15%, and MDA levels decreased significantly. Irrigation with FA was particularly effective, reducing MDA levels by 40% compared to the 300 µM chromium treatment. Furthermore, while chromium stress enhanced antioxidant enzyme activities, FA application further boosted total soluble protein levels and antioxidant enzyme activities under stress conditions. In conclusion, FA application demonstrates potential in improving maize tolerance to heavy metal stress by enhancing the antioxidant defense system and preserving photosynthetic pigments. These findings highlight FA’s promise as a practical strategy for mitigating the negative impacts of chromium stress on maize, promoting sustainable agricultural practices in contaminated environments.

This study provides, for the first time, a characterization of the mycorrhizal status of five olive cultivars (Arbequina, Arbosana, Hojiblanca, Picual and Frangivento) introduced in Algeria arid zone. To better understand how these introduced cultivars can adapt to a new environment, their relationship with a native complex of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) was examined in connection with a set of physicochemical soil parameters. Roots and rhizospheric soil were studied. The study area was characterized by alkaline and saline soils, a moderate level of organic matter, high levels of total and active calcium carbonates, low level of available phosphorus and a sandy loamy texture. Our results show the presence of symbiotic arbuscular endomycorrhizal fungi in the five cultivars. Mycorrhizal colonization by AMF revealed that the mycorrhizal frequency (F %) in the root systems reached 100 % for both Arbequina and Hojiblanca varieties. The intensity of mycorrhizal colonization (M %) and the intensity within root fragments (m %) ranged from 3.89 % to 65.96 %, with Hojiblanca showing the lowest and Arbequina the highest values. The abundance of arbuscules in the root fragments (a %) varied between 42.22 % in Frangivento and 68.66 % in Arbequina, while the abundance of arbuscular in the root system (A%) varied from 2.56 to 46.04 % (Hojiblanca and Arbequina respectively). For mycorrhizal frequency (F%), a One-way ANOVA test showed no significant differences between the five cultivars, highly significant differences for arbuscule abundance (a%) and very high significant differences for the M ( %), m ( %) and A ( %). In the rhizospheric soil, 11 species belonging to seven genera, three families, two orders and one class AMF were morphologically identified: Septoglomus constrictum, Septoglomus deserticola, Funneliformis mosseae, Funneliformis fasciculatum, Funneliformis coronatum, Funneliformis geosporum. Rhizophagus sinuosum, Rhizophagus clarus, Claroideoglomus caledonius Gigaspora rosia and Acaulospora bireticulata.

ABSTRACT Introduction Structural and functional cardiac defects leading to inadequate tissue oxygenation is known as Heart failure (HF) which is characterized by extensive morbidity and mortality. Pathophysiology of HF involves systolic and diastolic dysfunction, neurohormonal dysregulation, and imbalance in inflammatory mediators which complicates treatment further. Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) is an approach used for restoring ventricular synchrony and enhancing mechanical efficiency. This study discusses various key points of CRT and its uses in HF and discusses challenges and future implications. Methods An extensive review of the literature was conducted with evidence from several databases like Medline, PubMed Central, and Embase. Preference was given to articles published after 2010, but relevant articles even pre‐2010 were included. Mendeley was used as a reference manager for formatting. Results Functional improvements and an enhanced quality of life across a diverse range of patients have been demonstrated using CRT. This has significantly impacted the mortality rates of patients with HF. This manuscript conducted a comparative analysis various hallmark clinical trials conducted in lieu of CRT, across many years (2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2017, 2018, 2020). All trials have noted the supremacy of CRT compared to pharmaceutical treatment or other therapeutic methods. Majority of the trial participants had an LVEF of ≤ 35%, a QRS duration of ≤ 150 ms, and were categorized as NYHA class II–IV before initiation of CRT and, posttreatment, LVEF was improved significantly. The main advantages noted were functional improvements, such as enhanced quality of life and reduced mortality. Conclusion There have been multiple efforts undertaken to address the challenges in CRT, which include a reduction in the rates of nonresponding patients and using alternative adjunctive therapies like defibrillators. These have been shown to improve outcomes among HF patients. Although CRT is noted to be very efficient, some challenges like technological limitations, uncertainty regarding optimal pacing, and nonresponding patients, exist. Ongoing research aims to further develop and revolutionize HF care and improve patient outcomes across the world by refining patient selections and CRT efficacy.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the carcass characteristics, meat quality and fatty acid profile of lambs fed different levels of sprouted barley (SB) compared to a control group fed a diet based on barley grain and alfalfa hay. Forty-five intact male Awassi lambs (3 months old) were included in the study and were fed for 75 days, divided equally into five feeding groups based on their average body weight. The groups were fed diets containing 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% SB replacing the control diet of barley grain and alfalfa hay (SB25, SB50, SB75 and SB100, respectively). The results showed that SB (SB25–SB75) had no effect on body weight gain while a significant gradual decrease in dry matter, crude protein and crude fat intake with the inclusion of SB (SB50–SB100). Higher rates of SB, especially 50%, 75% and 100%, resulted in a remarkable decrease in body wall fat. The essential oils extracted from the leaves of five Eucalyptus species: E. astringens, E. camaldulensis, E. lehmannii, E. leucoxylon, and E. sideroxylon, were investigated for their antimicrobial properties. These species were growing in the same plantation area, exposed to identical conditions, and subjected to uniform agronomic practices. Processed and analyzed under consistent parameters, the essential oil yields ranged from 0.14 to 0.96% (w/w). Chromatographic analysis were resolved into 48 compounds, with 11 common to all oils. Terpenoids (oxygenated mono- and sesquiterpenes) dominated the oil profiles, constituting 55.66–76.67% of the composition. Major components identified included 1,8-cineole (21.97–50.93%), α-pinene (2.18–15.95%), p-cymene (0.83–15.94%), spathulenol (0–20.49%), globulol (4.09–14.26%), and aromadendrene (2.37–15.03%). Genetically driven interspecific variation in composition was observed through Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Hierarchical Cluster Analysis (HCA), and heatmap clustering. Moreover, distinctive components were identified for each essential oil, offering a valuable tool for discriminating between Eucalyptus species and ensuring authentication and quality control in commercial samples. Results from antimicrobial disc-diffusion assays indicated robust antimicrobial activity in all essential oils, with those derived from E. camaldulensis, E. lehmannii, and E. leucoxylon exhibiting the highest effectiveness.

Congenital myasthenia gravis syndrome (CMS) is a rare genetic heterogeneous disorder due to abnormal neuromuscular transmission caused by several genes. CMS caused by choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) gene mutations have been reported in 53 cases since 2020, and only three of them have been identified as hemizygous mutations.

In this research, we used the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) and Geographical Information System (GIS) to predict the annual rate of soil loss in the District Chakwal of Pakistan. The parameters of the RUSLE model were estimated using remote sensing data, and the erosion probability zones were determined using GIS. The estimated length slope ($LS$), crop management ($C$), rainfall erosivity ($R$), soil erodibility ($K$), and support practice ($P$) range from 0–68,227, 0–66.61%, 0–0.58, 495.99–648.68 $\; MJ/mm.t.ha^{-1}.year^{-1}\comma \;$ 0.15–0.25 $MJ/mm.t.ha^{-1}.year^{-1}$, and 1 respectively. The results indicate that the estimated total annual potential soil loss of approximately 4,67,064.25 $t.ha^{-1}.year^{-1}$ is comparable with the measured sediment loss of 11,631 $t.ha^{-1}.year^{-1}\;$ during the water year 2020. The predicted soil erosion rate due to an increase in agricultural area is approximately 164,249.31 $t.ha^{-1}.year^{-1}$. In this study, we also used Landsat imagery to rapidly achieve actual land use classification. Meanwhile, 38.13% of the region was threatened by very high soil erosion, where the quantity of soil erosion ranged from 365487.35 $t.ha^{-1}.year^{-1}$. Integrating GIS and remote sensing with the RUSLE model helped researchers achieve their final objectives. Land-use planners and decision-makers use the result's spatial distribution of soil erosion in District Chakwal for conservation and management planning.

Precision agriculture which facilitates and enables crop management through site-specific recommendations, is essential to optimize agricultural inputs in space and time. In this study, we used Landsat and MODIS-NDVI product data with climatic, topographic data and laboratory-analyzed soil samples to map the spatial distribution of seven soil properties; soil texture (T), electrical conductivity (EC), potential hydrogen (pH), nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), and organic matter (OM) in the Punjab, Pakistan from 2000 to 2020. We examined and compared three statistical prediction models: the support vector machine (SVM), the random forest regression (RFR), and the multiple linear regression (MLR). The predictions were validated against a separate set of soil samples while considering the modeling region and an extrapolation area. Model performance statistics showed that the RFR often provided the highest accuracy, with the machine learning algorithms performing slightly better than the MLR. It was discovered that one obstacle to accurately forecasting soil parameters at unsampled areas with MLR was its inability to handle non-linear connections between independent and dependent variables. Safflower is a multipurpose, underutilized annual crop that could be an alternate oilseed crop for normal and marginal lands around the world. Zinc as a nutrient plays a critical role in enzyme activity and nutrient absorption, leading to improved productivity and quality of oilseeds. However, imbalances between NPK and Zn can result in antagonistic interactions, leading to nutrient deficiencies. Therefore, this field experiment at the University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, Pakistan, was conducted to explore the synergistic effects of NPK and Zn on safflower growth, yield, and oil content. Safflower accession (UAF-SAFF-100) was treated with ten different combinations of zinc and NPK having different concentrations, i.e., T0 = control, T1 = NPK at 40:40:40 kg ha−1, T2 = NPK at 50:50:40 kg ha−1, T3 = NPK at 60:60:40 kg ha−1, T4 = NPK at 70:70:40 kg ha−1, T5 = NPK at 80:80:40 kg ha−1, T6 = T1 + zinc at 7.5 kg ha−1, T7 = T2 + zinc at 7.5 kg ha−1, T8 = T3 + zinc at 7.5 kg ha−1, T9 = T4 + zinc at 7.5 kg ha−1, and T10 = T5 + zinc at 7.5 kg ha−1. The results indicated that the application of T9 (NPK @ 70:70:40 kg/ha−1 + zinc @ 7.5 kg/ha−1) showed the most promising results in terms of growth and yield attributes. This treatment significantly improved key metrics such as capitulum diameter, the number of capitula per plant, seed yield, petal yield, and oil content. Thus, this treatment (T9) is proposed as an effective strategy for enhancing safflower growth and productivity, particularly in semi-arid regions. This study underscores the importance of optimizing nutrient management to achieve superior crop performance and suggests that tailored NPK and Zn applications can be a promising approach to maximizing safflower yield and oil quality.
