Trusted Platform Modules (TPMs), which serve as the root of trust in secure systems, are secure crypto-processors that carry out cryptographic primitives. Should large-scale quantum computing become a reality, the cryptographic primitives adopted in the TPM 2.0 standard will no longer be secure. Thus, the design of TPMs that provide Quantum Resistant (QR) primitives is of utmost importance, in particular with the restrictions imposed by embedded systems. In this paper, we investigate the deployment of QR primitives and protocols in the standard TPM 2.0. Cryptographic algorithms that are already in the NIST QR cryptography standardization process, as well as an Oblivious Transfer (OT), a fundamental cryptographic primitive, are the QR cryptographic schemes selected to extend TPM 2.0. In particular, the Kyber algorithm for key encapsulation, the Dilithium algorithm for digital signature, and a 3-round Random Oblivious Transfer (ROT) protocol, supporting protocols such as Multi-Party Computation and Private Set Intersection (PSI). The QR extended TPM 2.0 is implemented in ARM and RISC-V embedded processors, its computational requirements are analysed and experimentally evaluated in comparison to the standard TPM. It is shown that Kyber and Dilithium are faster at creating keys than RSA, due to the key size and secure random sampling required in RSA, while they meet the same performance level as ECC. For digital signatures, both in signature creation and verification, Dilithium is on par with RSA and ECC. The ROT protocol shows decent performance and its support required small modifications to the TPM. This paper also shows that it would be possible to backport the required code to already available TPMs to ensure that current TPMs remain secure against quantum adversaries.

Quantum computing is a rapidly evolving field encompassing various disciplines such as physics, mathematics, computer engineering, and computer science. Teaching quantum computing in a concise and effective manner can be challenging, especially within the time constraints of a single course or a short period, even for graduate students. This challenge is particularly relevant in two-year MSc programs that include a thesis, which is a typical structure in higher education systems in the USA and Europe. In this paper, the author proposes an approach to teaching quantum computing and shares their experience of conducting a course chapter on the subject within a two-week time frame. The experience reported in this paper is integrated into the "Technologies of Computing Systems" (TCS) course, with a total workload of 6 ECTS (in the context of the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System, one ECTS corresponds to 28 hours of work), conducted in one quarter, over seven weeks. The structure of the course chapter is discussed, involving a series of lectures that were accompanied by lab classes and a lab project, allowing students to receive guidance while also engaging in hands-on learning and independent study. The paper provides an overview of the quantum computing topics covered, and their integration in the TSC course, and gives details about how these topics are studied in the different types of classes. It also discusses the evaluation procedure and presents the results obtained. It can be concluded that the inclusion of the quantum computing component not only significantly increased student interest in the course but also effectively bridged the gap between classical and quantum computing for engineering students within a short period of two weeks., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

Developments in Genome-Wide Association Studies have led to the increasing notion that future healthcare techniques will be personalized to the patient, by relying on genetic tests to determine the risk of developing a disease. To this end, the detection of gene interactions that cause complex diseases constitutes an important application. Similarly to many applications in this field, extensive data sets containing genetic information for a series of patients are used (such as Single-Nucleotide Polymorphisms), leading to high computational complexity and memory utilization, thus constituting a major challenge when targeting high-performance execution in modern computing systems. To close this gap, this work proposes several novel approaches for the detection of three-way gene interactions in modern CPUs and GPUs, making use of different optimizations to fully exploit the target architectures. Crucial insights from the Cache-Aware Roofline Model are used to ensure the suitability of the applications to the computing devices. An extensive study of the architectural features of 13 CPU and GPU devices from all main vendors is also presented, allowing to understand the features relevant to obtain high-performance in this bioinformatics domain. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first to perform such evaluation for epistasis detection. Increased attention to RISC-V in Cloud, Data Center, Automotive and Networking applications, has been fueling the move of RISC-V to the high-performance computing scenario. However, lack of powerful performance monitoring tools will result in poorly optimized applications and, consequently, a limited computing performance. While the RISC-V ISA already defines a hardware performance monitor (HPM), current software gives limited support for monitoring performance. In this paper we introduce extensions and modifications to the Performance analysis tools for Linux(perf/perf_events), Linux kernel, and OpenSBI, aiming to achieve full support for the RISC-V performance monitoring specification. Preliminary testing and evaluation was carried out in Linux 5.7 running on a FPGA booted CVA6 CPU, formerly named Ariane, showing a monitoring overhead of 0.283%.

This paper investigates the performance of epidemic routing in mobile social networks. It first analyzes the time taken for a node to meet the first node of a set of nodes restricted to move in a specific subarea. Afterwards, a monolithic Stochastic Reward Net (SRN) is proposed to evaluate the delivery delay and the average number of transmissions under epidemic routing by considering skewed location visiting preferences. This model is not scalable enough, in terms of the number of nodes and frequently visited locations. In order to achieve higher scalability, the folding technique is applied to the monolithic model, and an approximate folded SRN is proposed to evaluate performance of epidemic routing. Discrete-event simulation is used to validate the proposed models. Both SRN models show high accuracy in predicting the performance of epidemic routing. We also propose an Ordinary Differential Equation (ODE) model for epidemic routing and compare it with the folded model. Obtained results show that the folded model is more accurate than the ODE model. Moreover, it is proved that the number of transmissions by the time of delivery follows uniform distribution, in a general class of networks, where positions of nodes are always independent and identically distributed.

With millimeter wave wireless communications, the resulting radiation reflects on most visible objects, creating rich multipath environments, namely in urban scenarios. The radiation captured by a listening device is thus shaped by the obstacles encountered, which carry latent information regarding their relative positions. In this paper, a system to convert the received millimeter wave radiation into the device's position is proposed, making use of the aforementioned hidden information. Using deep learning techniques and a pre-established codebook of beamforming patterns transmitted by a base station, the simulations show that average estimation errors below 10 meters are achievable in realistic outdoors scenarios that contain mostly non-line-of-sight positions, paving the way for new positioning systems., Comment: 5 pages, 7 figures.
