Studies have shown that white matter (WM) volumetric reductions and overall degradation occur with aging. Nonetheless little is known about the WM alterations that may underlie different cognitive status in older individuals. The main goal of the present work was to identify and characterize possible macro and microstructural WM alterations that could distinguish between older healthy individuals with contrasting cognitive profiles (i.e., "poor" vs "good" cognitive performers). Structural and diffusion magnetic resonance imaging was performed in order to quantify local WM volumes, white matter signal abnormalities (WMSA) volume (a measure of lesion burden) and diffusion tensor imaging scalar maps known to probe WM microstructure. A battery of neurocognitive/psychological tests was administered to assess the cognitive performance. Poor performers showed a higher slope for the positive association between WMSA volume and age compared to good performers. Even when controlling for WMSA volume, poor performers also evidenced lower fractional anisotropy, as well as positive associations with age with higher slopes of regression parameters in radial and axial diffusivity. Altogether results suggest that cognitive performance is related to differences in WM, with poor cognitive performers displaying signs of faster aging in WM.

Introduction:  Chronic otitis media (COM) is an inflammatory condition associated with otorrhea as well as large and persistent perforations of the tympanic membrane in some cases. COM can also lead to cholesteatoma. Surgical treatment with canal wall-down and canal wall-up tympanomastoidectomy is considered for both types of illness. The choice of technique is controversial and is dependent on several factors, including the extent of disease., Objective:  We aimed to evaluate surgical outcomes in COM patients with and without cholesteatoma treated with canal wall-down and canal wall-up tympanomastoidectomy. Disease eradication and post-operative auditory thresholds were assessed., Method:  Patient records from the otorhinolaryngology department of a tertiary hospital were assessed retrospectively., Results:  Patients who underwent canal wall-up tympanomastoidectomy had a higher rate of revision surgery, especially those with cholesteatoma. However, there were no statistically significant differences in post-operative hearing thresholds between the two techniques., Conclusion:  The canal wall-down technique is superior to the canal wall-up technique, especially for patients with cholesteatoma.

Stem cells have been long looked at as possible therapeutic vehicles for different health related problems. Among the different existing stem cell populations, Adipose- derived Stem Cells (ASCs) have been gathering attention in the last 10 years. When compared to other stem cells populations and sources, ASCs can be easily isolated while providing simultaneously higher yields upon the processing of adipose tissue. Similar to other stem cell populations, it was initially thought that the main potential of ASCs for regenerative medicine approaches was intimately related to their differentiation capability. Although this is true, there has been an increasing body of literature describing the trophic effects of ASCs on the protection, survival and differentiation of variety of endogenous cells/tissues. Moreover, they have also shown to possess an immunomodulatory character. This effect is closely related to the ASCs' secretome and the soluble factors found within it. Molecules such as hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), granulocyte and macrophage colony stimulating factors, interleukins (ILs) 6, 7, 8 and 11, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), nerve growth factor (NGF), adipokines and others have been identified within the ASCs' secretome. Due to its importance regarding future applications for the field of regenerative medicine, we aim, in the present review, to make a comprehensive analysis of the literature relating to the ASCs' secretome and its relevance to the immune and central nervous system, vascularization and cardiac regeneration. The concluding section will highlight some of the major challenges that remain before ASCs can be used for future clinical applications.

Unlabelled: Nasal polyposis is a chronic inflammatory process of the nasal mucosa, characterized by multiple and bilateral nasal polyps. Different drugs have been used in its treatment. In order to study the results of different treatment modalities it is necessary to have some kind of staging., Aim: to present a new endoscopic staging method, based on nasal endoscopy and on the three-dimensional nasal polyp assessment; and compare its reproducibility with that from two other systems already established in the literature., Study Design: Cohort study., Material and Methods: Three experts assessed the exams of 20 patients with nasal polyposis at different times, before, at 15 and at 30 days after the start of oral prednisone, 1 mg/kg/day, during 7 days. We assessed the agreement rate among the experts, using Kappa for statistic analysis., Results: The three methods were reproducible, and the method hereby proposed had the least agreement among the examiners., Conclusions: the three-dimensional staging system proposed proved reproducible, despite showing less agreement among the examiners than the other as the other two methods.

A baculovirus was isolated from larvae of Condylorrhiza vestigialis (Guenée) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), a pest of a forest species known as Poplar (family Salicaceae, genus: Populus) with high economic value. Electron microscopy analysis of the occlusion body obtained from diseased larvae showed polyhedra containing multiple nucleocapsids per envelope. This baculovirus was thus named Condylorrhiza vestigialis multiple nucleopolyhedrovirus (CoveMNPV) and characterized by its DNA restriction endonuclease pattern, polyhedral protein, viral protein synthesis, and infectivity in insect cell lines. Restriction endonuclease profiles of viral DNA digested with five restriction enzymes were obtained and the CoveMNPV genome size was estimated to be 81+/-2.5 kbp. The isolation of the polyhedra (OBs) was done from the crude extract of infected larvae by ultracentrifugation through sucrose gradients. These viral particles were analyzed by denaturing polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE), which showed a strong band with approximately 33 kDa, corresponding to the main protein of the occlusion bodies (polyhedrin). Also, a similar band was observed for CoveMNPV infected Spodoptera frugiperda cells (SF-21 AE) pulse-labeled with [(35)S] methionine and fractionated by SDS-PAGE. Of the four insect cell lines tested for susceptibility to CoveMNPV infection, the SF-21 AE was the most susceptible with occlusion bodies produced in most of the inoculated cells. This is the first record of an NPV from C. vestigialis.

Conidia production of Beauveria sp. strain LAG by solid-state fermentation (SSF) using blends of agro-industrial residues (residual potatoes and sugar-cane bagasse) was optimized with respect to cultivation conditions and the composition of substrate mixture in Erlenmeyer flasks and column-type bioreactor. With a blend of 60 % residual potatoes and 40 % sugar-cane bagasse the optimum conditions achieved were: incubation temperature 26 degrees C, initial substrate pH 6, inoculum concentration 10(7) conidia per g substrate; optimal initial moisture of the substrate was 70 % for Erlenmeyer flasks, in column-type bioreactor (with forced aeration) the optimal initial moisture of the substrate was 65 % with airflow of 60 mL/min. The highest production (1.07 x 10(10) conidia per g dry substrate) was achieved after a 10-d fermentation. The conidia were used in laboratory assays against Thelosia camina and Hylesia sp., caterpillars that are serious pests of mate plants. The mortality of T. camina was >90 % 10 d after spraying caterpillars with 1 mL conidia suspension at a concentration 10(5)-10(8)/mL. For Hylesia sp., the mortality was 70 %, 7 d after immersion in the conidia suspension containing 108 conidia per mL. Therefore, the Beauveria sp. LAG can be considered to be an important biocontrol instrument in the prospect of the Integrated Pest Management for mate plants.
