The complete fusion of $^6$Li with $^{28}$Si and $^{64}$Ni nuclei, ranging from subbarrier energies up to values well above the Coulomb barrier, is studied using the continuum discretized coupled channels method. We investigate the sensitivity of the results to the largest energy used in the discretization of the continuum, including closed channels. Our results reveal that, as long as the states in the continuum are not limited to too small energies, the specific upper bound adopted is not relevant as the complete fusion cross-section is fairly insensitive to it above a threshold. Convergence with respect to this parameter is rapidly reached, so that closed channels play a role only at low collision energies. A good agreement with the available experimental data is obtained.

Experimental information on fragment emissions is important in understanding the dynamics of nuclear collisions and in the development of transport model simulating heavy-ion collisions. The composition of complex fragments emitted in the heavy-ion collisions can be explained by statistical models, which assume that thermal equilibrium is achieved at collision energies below 100 MeV/u. Our new experimental data together with theoretical analyses for light particles from Sn+Sn collisions at 270 MeV/u, suggest that the hypothesis of thermal equilibrium breaks down for particles emitted with high transfer momentum. To inspect the system's properties in such limit, the scaling features of the yield ratios of particles from two systems, a neutron-rich system of ${}^{132}\mathrm{Sn}+{}^{124}\mathrm{Sn}$ and a nearly symmetric system of ${}^{108}\mathrm{Sn}+{}^{112}\mathrm{Sn}$, are examined in the framework of the statistical multifragmentation model and the antisymmetrized molecular dynamics model. The isoscaling from low energy particles agree with both models. However the observed breakdown of isoscaling for particles with high transverse momentum cannot be explained by the antisymmetrized molecular dynamics model.

In the framework of the Statistical Multifragmentation Model, the nuclear isoscaling analysis is extended to constrain the ratio between the sizes of the decaying sources formed in a collision between two heavy ions. It is found that the ratio between the probabilities of observing n fragments in each event, for each of the sources, follows a scaling law, similar to the traditional nuclear isoscaling. However, the corresponding slope is also sensitive to the sources' sizes. This property is explained analytically using the grand-canonical ensemble. The extent to which our findings are affected by finite size effects and by the deexcitation of the hot primary fragments is also investigated. The scaling turns out to be robust and weakly affected by effects implied by these two aspects. We also find that the Poisson distribution is a fairly good approximation to the above mentioned probabilities, associated with both the primordial fragments, produced at the breakup stage, and the final ones, found at the end of the fragment deexcitation process., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

Two-particle correlations based on the multiplicity of selected isobars are found to be sensitive to the parameterization of the fragments' binding energies and the breakup volume assumed in the model calculations. The properties of these correlations have been examined in the framework of the Statistical Multifragmentation Model as a function of the breakup temperature. The model calculations suggest that the maxima of these correlation functions occur at well separated temperatures as the breakup volumes used in the model vary from 3 to 6 times that at normal density. These volumes are within the range assumed in most statistical calculations and supported by experiments. Besides their position, the height and width of the maxima are also found to be sensitive to the parameterization of the fragments' binding energy. The magnitude of all these effects also depends on the isobars considered in the correlations. We found that, due to an interplay between the symmetry energy and the volume dependent terms of the Helmholtz free energy, in the case of nearly symmetric sources, correlations involving light mirror nuclei seem to enhance these effects. We suggest that the proposed correlation functions could be used to extract information on the fragments' energies and on the breakup volume of nuclear sources., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

We study the size properties of the largest intermediate mass fragments in each partition mode, produced in the prompt statistical breakup of a thermally equilibrated nuclear source, at different temperatures. We find that an appreciable amount of events have primary intermediate mass fragments of similar sizes. Our results suggest that, depending on the temperature of the fragmenting source, their production may be much larger than what would be expected from considerations based on purely combinatorial arrangements of the nucleons in the fragmenting system. We also find that the isospin composition of the largest fragments is sensitive to their rank size within the event. We suggest that experimental analyses, conceived to reconstruct the breakup configuration, should be employed to investigate the validity of our findings., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

The deexcitation of the primary hot fragments, produced in the breakup of an excited nuclear source, during their propagation under the influence of their mutual Coulomb repulsion is studied in the framework of a recently developed hybrid model. The latter is based on the Statistical Mul- tifragmentation Model (SMM), describing the prompt breakup of the source, whereas the particle emission from the hot fragments, that decay while traveling away from each other, is treated by the Weisskopf-Ewing evaporation model. Since this treatment provides an event by event descrip- tion of the process, in which the classical trajectories of the fragments are followed using molecular dynamics techniques, it allows one to study observables such as two-particle correlations and infer the extent to which the corresponding observables may provide information on the multifragment production mechanisms. Our results suggest that the framework on which these treatments are based may be considerably constrained by such analyses. Furthermore, they imply that information obtained from these model calculations may provide feedback to the theory of nuclear interferome- try. We also found that neutron deficient fragments should hold information more closely related to the breakup region than neutron rich ones, as they are produced in much earlier stages of the post breakup dynamics than the latter., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

We use an improved version of the semiclassical method described in Refs. [1,2,3] to evaluate fusion cross sections in collisions of weakly bound nuclei. This version takes into account the static effects of the low breakup threshold, uses better bin states in the discretization of the continuum and avoids the excitation of closed channels. The population of these channels is a consequence of the violation of energy conservation, which is inherent in the semiclassical method. The method is employed to evaluate complete fusion and total fusion cross section in collisions of the weakly bound 6,7Li projectiles with 159Tb and 197Au targets, for which data is available. The internal temperatures of fragments produced by an excited nuclear source are investigated using the microcanonical version of the Statistical Multifragmentation Model, with discrete energy. We focus on the fragments' properties at the breakup stage, before they have time to deexcite by particle emission. Since the adopted model provides the excitation energy distribution of these primordial fragments, it allows one to calculate the temperatures of different isotope families and infer on the sensitivity to their isospin composition. It is found that, due to the functional form of the nuclear density of states and the excitation energy distribution of the fragments, proton rich isotopes are hotter than neutron rich ones. This property has been taken to be an indication of earlier emission of the former from a source that cools down as it expands and emits fragments. Although this scenario is incompatible with the prompt breakup of a thermally equilibrated source, our results reveal that the latter framework also provides the same qualitative features just mentioned. Therefore they suggest that this property cannot be taken as evidence for non-equilibrium emission. We also found that this sensitivity to the isotopic composition of the fragments depends on the isospin composition of the source, and that it is weakened as the excitation energy of the source increases., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

The properties of the kinetic energy spectra of light isotopes produced in the breakup of a nuclear source and during the deexcitation of its products are examined. The initial stage, at which the hot fragments are created, is modeled by the Statistical Multifragmentation Model, whereas the Weisskopf-Ewing evaporation treatment is adopted to describe the subsequent fragment deexcita- tion, as they follow their classical trajectories dictated by the Coulomb repulsion among them. The energy spectra obtained are compared to available experimental data. The influence of the fusion cross-section entering into the evaporation treatment is investigated and its influence on the qual- itative aspects of the energy spectra turns out to be small. Although these aspects can be fairly well described by the model, the underlying physics associated with the quantitative discrepancies remains to be understood., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

We investigate correlations in the fragment momentum distribution due to the propagation of fragments under the influence of their mutual Coulomb field, after the breakup of an excited nuclear source.The magnitude of the effects on the nuclear temperatures obtained from such distributions is estimated with the help of a simple approach in which a charged fragment interacts with a homogeneous charged sphere. The resuslts are used to correct the temperatures obtained from the asymptotic momentum distributions of fragments produced by a Monte-Carlo simulation in which the system's configuration at breakup is provided by the canonical version of the Statistical Multifragmentation Model. In a separate calculation, the dynamics of this many-particle charged system is followed in a molecular dynamics calculation until the fragments are far away from the breakup volume. The results suggest that, although the magnitude of the corrections is similar in both models, many-particle correlations present in the second approach are non-negligible and should be taken into account in order to minimize ambiguities in such studies., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Nuclear energy released by splitting Uranium and Thorium isotopes into two, three, four, up to eight fragments with nearly equal size are studied. We found that the energy released come from equally splitting the $^{235,238}$U and $^{230,232}$Th nuclei into to three fragments is largest. The statistical multifragmentation model is employed to calculate the probability of different breakup channels for the excited nuclei. Weighing the the probability distributions of fragments multiplicity at different excitation energies for the $^{238}$U nucleus, we found that an excitation energy between 1.2 and 2 MeV/u is optimal for the $^{235}$U, $^{238}$U, $^{230}$Th and $^{232}$Th nuclei to release nuclear energy of about 0.7-0.75 MeV/u.

The agreement between the fragments' internal and kinetic temperatures with the breakup temperature is investigated using a Statistical Multifragmentation Model which makes no a priori as- sumption on the relationship between them. We thus examine the conditions for obtaining such agreement and find that, in the framework of our model, this holds only in a relatively narrow range of excitation energy. The role played by the qualitative shape of the fragments' state densities is also examined. Our results suggest that the internal temperature of the light fragments may be affected by this quantity, whose behavior may lead to constant internal temperatures over a wide excitation energy range. It thus suggests that the nuclear thermometry may provide valuable information on the nuclear state density., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

The fragmentation of thermalized sources is studied using a version of the Statistical Multifragmentation Model which employs state densities that take the pairing gap in the nuclear levels into account. Attention is focused on the properties of the charge distributions observed in the breakup of the source. Since the microcanonical version of the model used in this study provides the primary fragment excitation energy distribution, one may correlate the reduction of the odd-even staggering in the charge distribution with the increasing occupation of high energy states. Thus, in the frame- work of this model, such staggering tends to disappear as a function of the total excitation energy of the source, although the energy per particle may be small for large systems. We also find that, although the deexcitation of the primary fragments should, in principle, blur these odd-even effects as the fragments follow their decay chains, the consistent treatment of pairing may significantly enhance these staggering effects on the final yields. In the framework of this model, we find that odd-even effects in the charge distributions should be observed in the fragmentation of relatively light systems at very low excitation energies. Our results also suggest that the odd-even staggering may provide useful information on the nuclear state density., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

The Generalized Fermi Breakup recently demonstrated to be formally equivalent to the Statistical Multifragmentation Model, if the contribution of excited states are included in the state densities of the former, is implemented. Since this treatment requires the application of the Statistical Multifragmentation Model repeatedly on the hot fragments until they have decayed to their ground states, it becomes extremely computational demanding, making its application to the systems of interest extremely difficult. Based on exact recursion formulae previously developed by Chase and Mekjian to calculate the statistical weights very efficiently, we present an implementation which is efficient enough to allow it to be applied to large systems at high excitation energies. Comparison with the GEMINI++ sequential decay code shows that the predictions obtained with our treatment are fairly similar to those obtained with this more traditional model., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

Odd-Even Staggering (OES) appears in many areas of nuclear physics, and is generally associated with the pairing term in the nuclear binding energy. To explore this effect, we use the Improved Statistical Multifragmentation Model to populate an ensemble of hot primary fragments, which are then de-excited using the Weisskopf-Ewing statistical emission formalism. The yields are then compared to experimental data. Our results show that, before secondary decay, OES appears only in the yields of even mass fragments and not in the yields of odd mass fragments. De-excitation of the hot fragments must be taken into account to describe the data, suggesting that the OES in fragment yields is a useful criterion for validating or adjusting theoretical de-excitation models.

We propose an opinion model based on agents located at the vertices of a regular lattice. Each agent has an independent opinion (among an arbitrary, but fixed, number of choices) and its own degree of conviction. The latter changes every time it interacts with another agent who has a different opinion. The dynamics leads to size distributions of clusters (made up of agents which have the same opinion and are located at contiguous spatial positions) which follow a power law, as long as the range of the interaction between the agents is not too short, i.e. the system self-organizes into a critical state. Short range interactions lead to an exponential cut off in the size distribution and to spatial correlations which cause agents which have the same opinion to be closely grouped. When the diversity of opinions is restricted to two, non-consensus dynamic is observed, with unequal population fractions, whereas consensus is reached if the agents are also allowed to interact with those which are located far from them.

The properties of isobaric ratios, between nuclei produced in the same reaction, are investigated using the canonical and grand-canonical statistical ensembles. Although the grand-canonical for- mulae furnish a means to correlate the ratios with the liquid drop parameters, finite size effects make it difficult to obtain their actual values from fitting nuclear collision data., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures

The breakup of glass and alumina plates due to planar impacts on one of their lateral sides is studied. Particular attention is given to investigating the spatial location of the cracks within the plates. Analysis based on a phenomenological model suggests that bifurcations along the cracks' paths are more likely to take place closer to the impact region than far away from it, i. e., the bifurcation probability seems to lower as the perpendicular distance from the impacted lateral in- creases. It is also found that many observables are not sensitive to the plate material used in this work, as long as the fragment multiplicities corresponding to the fragmentation of the plates are similar. This gives support to the universal properties of the fragmentation process reported in for- mer experiments. However, even under the just mentioned circumstances, some spatial observables are capable of distinguishing the material of which the plates are made and, therefore, it suggests that this universality should be carefully investigated.

We demonstrate the close similarity of a generalized Fermi breakup model, in which densities of excited states are taken into account, to the microcanonical statistical multifragmentation model used to describe the desintegration of highly excited fragments of nuclear reactions., Comment: 19 pages, 2 figures

The fragmentation of alumina and glass plates due to lateral impact is studied. A few hundred plates have been fragmented at different impact velocities and the produced fragments are analyzed. The method employed in this work allows one to investigate some geometrical properties of the fragments, besides the traditional size distribution usually studied in former experiments. We found that, although both materials exhibit qualitative similar fragment size distribution function, their geometrical properties appear to be quite different. A schematic model for two-dimensional fragmentation is also presented and its predictions are compared to our experimental results. The comparison suggests that the analysis of the fragments' geometrical properties constitutes a more stringent test of the theoretical models' assumptions than the size distribution.

The density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy is inspected using the Statistical Multifragmentation Model with Skyrme effective interactions. The model consistently considers the expansion of the fragments' volumes at finite temperature at the freeze-out stage. By selecting parameterizations of the Skyrme force that lead to very different equations of state for the symmetry energy, we investigate the sensitivity of different observables to the properties of the effective forces. Our results suggest that, in spite of being sensitive to the thermal dilation of the fragments' volumes, it is difficult to distinguish among the Skyrme forces from the isoscaling analysis. On the other hand, the isotopic distribution of the emitted fragments turns out to be very sensitive to the force employed in the calculation., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

The properties of the nuclear isoscaling at finite temperature are investigated and the extent to which its parameter $\alpha$ holds information on the symmetry energy is examined. We show that, although finite temperature effects invalidate the analytical formulas that relate the isoscaling parameter $\alpha$ to those of the mass formula, the symmetry energy remains the main ingredient that dictates the behavior of $\alpha$ at finite temperatures, even for very different sources. This conclusion is not obvious as it is not true in the vanishing temperature limit, where analytical formulas are available. Our results also reveal that different statistical ensembles lead to essentially the same conclusions based on the isoscaling analysis, for the temperatures usually assumed in theoretical calculations in the nuclear multifragmentation process., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

The Statistical Multifragmentation Model is modified to incorporate the Helmholtz free energies calculated in the finite temperature Thomas-Fermi approximation using Skyrme effective interactions. In this formulation, the density of the fragments at the freeze-out configuration corresponds to the equilibrium value obtained in the Thomas-Fermi approximation at the given temperature. The behavior of the nuclear caloric curve at constant volume is investigated in the micro-canonical ensemble and a plateau is observed for excitation energies between 8 and 10 MeV per nucleon. A kink in the caloric curve is found at the onset of this gas transition, indicating the existence of a small excitation energy region with negative heat capacity. In contrast to previous statistical calculations, this situation takes place even in this case in which the system is constrained to fixed volume. The observed phase transition takes place at approximately constant entropy. The charge distribution and other observables also turn out to be sensitive to the treatment employed in the calculation of the free energies and the fragments' volumes at finite temperature, specially at high excitation energies. The isotopic distribution is also affected by this treatment, which suggests that this prescription may help to obtain information on the nuclear equation of state.

Neutrinos emitted during the collapse, bounce and subsequent explosion provide information about supernova dynamics. The neutrino spectra are determined by weak interactions with nuclei and nucleons in the inner regions of the star, and thus the neutrino spectra are determined by the composition of matter. The composition of stellar matter at temperature ranging from $T=1-3$ MeV and densities ranging from $10^{-5}$ to 0.1 times the saturation density is explored. We examine the single-nucleus approximation commonly used in describing dense matter in supernova simulations and show that, while the approximation is accurate for predicting the energy and pressure at most densities, it fails to predict the composition accurately. We find that as the temperature and density increase, the single nucleus approximation systematically overpredicts the mass number of nuclei that are actually present and underestimates the contribution from lighter nuclei which are present in significant amounts., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures

Using different parameterizations of the nuclear mass formula, we study the sensitivity of the isoscaling parameters to the mass formula employed in grand-canonical calculations. Previous works on isoscaling have suggested that the symmetry energy implied in such calculations is anomalously smaller than that suggested by fits to nuclear masses. We show that surface corrections to the symmetry energy naturally broadens the isotopic distribution thus allowing for values of the symmetry energy which more closely match those obtained from nuclear masses., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

We include in statistical model calculations the facts that in the nuclear multifragmentation process the fragments are produced within a given volume and have a finite size. The corrections associated with these constraints affect the partition modes and, as a consequence, other observables in the process. In particular, we find that the favored fragmenting modes strongly suppress the collective flow energy, leading to much lower values compared to what is obtained from unconstrained calculations. This leads, for a given total excitation energy, to a nontrivial correlation between the breakup temperature and the collective expansion velocity. In particular we find that, under some conditions, the temperature of the fragmenting system may increase as a function of this expansion velocity, contrary to what it might be expected., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures

Stochastic models for the development of cracks in 1 and 2 dimensional objects are presented. In one dimension, we focus on particular scenarios for interacting and non-interacting fragments during the breakup process. For two dimensional objects, we consider only non-interacting fragments, but analyze isotropic and anisotropic development of fissures. Analytical results are given for many observables. Fragment energy spectra of neutron deficient isotopes are significantly more energetic than those of neutron rich isotopes of the same element. This trend is well beyond what can be expected for the bulk multi-fragmentation of an equilibrated system. It can be explained, however, if some of these fragments are emitted earlier through the surface of the system while it is expanding and cooling., Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures

The sensitivity of the Statistical Multifragmentation Model to the underlying statistical assumptions is investigated. We concentrate on its micro-canonical, canonical, and isobaric formulations. As far as average values are concerned, our results reveal that all the ensembles make very similar predictions, as long as the relevant macroscopic variables (such as temperature, excitation energy and breakup volume) are the same in all statistical ensembles. It also turns out that the multiplicity dependence of the breakup volume in the micro-canonical version of the model mimics a system at (approximately) constant pressure, at least in the plateau region of the caloric curve. However, in contrast to average values, our results suggest that the distributions of physical observables are quite sensitive to the statistical assumptions. We study an economic model where agents trade a variety of products by using one of three competing rules: "need", "greed" and "noise". We find that the optimal strategy for any agent depends on both product composition in the overall market and composition of strategies in the market. In particular, a strategy that does best on pairwise competition may easily do much worse when all are present, leading, in some cases, to a "paper, stone, scissors" circular hierarchy., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

We develop an improved Statistical Multifragmentation Model that provides the capability to calculate calorimetric and isotopic observables with precision. With this new model we examine the influence of nuclear isospin on the fragment elemental and isotopic distributions. We show that the proposed improvements on the model are essential for studying isospin effects in nuclear multifragmentation. In particular, these calculations show that accurate comparisons to experimental data require that the nuclear masses, free energies and secondary decay must be handled with higher precision than many current models accord., Comment: 46 pages, 16 figures

We show that the qualitative behavior of the nuclear caloric curve can be inferred from the energy dependence of the isoscaling parameters. Since there are strong indications that the latter are not distorted by the secondary decay of primary hot fragments, in contrast to other observables, this suggests that valuable information on the nuclear caloric curve may be obtained through the analysis presented in this work.

Sea ice breaks up and regenerates rapidly during winter conditions in the Arctic. Analyzing satellite data from the Kara Sea, we find that the average ice floe size depends on weather conditions. Nevertheless, the frequency of floes of size $A$ is a power law, $N\sim A^{-\tau}$, where $\tau=1.6\pm 0.2$, for $A$ less than approximately 100 $km^2$. This scale-invariant behaviour suggests a competition between fracture due to strains in the ice field and refreezing of the fractures. We discuss the accuracy of mass models for extrapolating to very asymmetric nuclei and the impact of such extrapolations on the predictions of isotopic observables in multifragmentation. We obtain improved mass predictions by incorporating measured masses and extrapolating to unmeasured masses with a mass formula that includes surface symmetry and Coulomb terms. We find that using accurate masses has a significant impact on the predicted isotopic observables., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

Different statistical multifragmentation models have been used to study isoscaling, i.e. the factorization of the isotope ratios from two reactions, into fugacity terms of proton and neutron number, R21(N,Z)=Y2(N,Z)/Y1(N,Z)=C*exp(a*N+b*Z). Even though the primary isotope distributions are quite different from the final distributions due to evaporation from the excited fragments, the values of a and b are not much affected by sequential decays. a is shown to be mainly sensitive to the proton and neutron composition of the emitting source and may be used to study isospin-dependent properties in nuclear collisions such as the symmetry energy in the equation of state of asymmetric nuclear matter.

We discuss different aspects which could influence temperatures deduced from experimental isotopic yields in the multifragmentation process. It is shown that fluctuations due to the finite size of the system and distortions due to the decay of hot primary fragments conspire to blur the temperature determination in multifragmentation reactions. These facts suggest that caloric curves obtained through isotope thermometers, which were taken as evidence for a first-order phase transition in nuclear matter, should be investigated very carefully., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures
