An international symposium, 'Global and European Challenges for Air and Space Law at the Edge of the 21st Century', organised by the Institute of Air and Space Law (Cologne) and the German Aerospace Center (DLR), took place from 8 to 10 June 2005 in Cologne. The conference assembled space law experts from industry, academic and international institutions world-wide. Areas of discussion were national space legislation, the current relationship of ESA and the EU, and common issues in air and space law with regard to future aerospace applications. Jorgenson Abstract: The first of a new series of annual symposia organized by the IISL and the IAA, in partnership with others, was held in Washington, DC in May 2010. It examined the effect of space law on international civil, commercial and governmental space activities, with the emphasis on US activities in particular. The importance of developing appropriate legal mechanisms to assure the sustainability of space was highlighted, as was the need for the legal profession to explain the differences between various legal tools for space governance. This report outlines the problems that are now occurring because of a lack of rules of the road for outer space and highlights some of the issues raised at the conference on 'Space for Defence and Security' organised by the Royal United Services Institute in London on 16-17 September 2008.

The Third Space Conference of the Americas was held in Nov 1996 in Punta del Este, Uruguay. A working group composed of governmental representatives was formed which prepared the Declaration of Punta del Este. Three committees were organized to make an inquiry on various areas of space development. Thirty one projects on the use of cooperation on space technology were reported. In one of the sessions, space law was discussed.
