Abstract

Amid ongoing economic reforms, Cuba faces its most severe crisis since the 1990s Soviet Union collapse. Transitioning into a service-oriented economy, it grapples with inefficiencies, a feeble production base, and a struggling external sector. Traditionally reliant on sugar, Cuba now depends on international tourism and professional services for hard currency. However, these lack domestic production ties, limiting economic impact. Systemic constraints, a trade deficit, and dependence on imports compound challenges. Fading Venezuelan support, U.S. sanctions, the COVID-19 pandemic, and geopolitical events exacerbate economic woes. This study delves into GDP growth, trade, financial struggles, and external factors, highlighting critical hurdles impeding Cuba's economic development.

Abstract

This paper describes the simulation of a microwave link from the transmitter to the receiver intermediate-frequency ports, by means of a rigorous circuit-level nonlinear analysis approach coupled with the electromagnetic characterization of the transmitter and receiver front-ends. This includes a full electromagnetic computation of the radiated far field which is used to establish the connection between transmitter and receiver. Digitally modulated radio-frequency drive is treated by a modulation-oriented harmonic-balance method based on Krylov-subspace modelorder reduction to allow the handling of large-size front-ends. An artificial neural network model is then developed to allow fast computation of the link driven by long sequences of the order of millions of samples. In this way, a meaningful evaluation of such link performance aspects as the bit-error rate becomes possible at the circuit level. Abstract

This article looks at the business prospects for Canadian firms resulting from a gradual easing of US economic sanctions against Cuba. In the short term, the status quo on the embargo will mean little change for Canadian commercial interests. In the medium term, the removal of certain embargo provisions like the travel ban should provide a fertile ground for trade and investment. In the long term, once the whole embargo is finally lifted, Canadian companies should have the same competitive advantages in Cuba they already enjoy in Latin America, and especially in the Caribbean region. In general, traders will suffer more than investors from fierce US competition, but there should be growing opportunities in many business areas. Aggressive credit policies, innovative ways to acquire a greater knowledge of the Cuban market, and supply‐chain integration are among the key strategies that must be developed to overcome challenges and fully exploit these opportunities. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
