The upcoming Square Kilometer Array (SKA) telescope marks a significant step forward in radio astronomy, presenting new opportunities and challenges for data analysis. Traditional visual models pretrained on optical photography images may not perform optimally on radio interferometry images, which have distinct visual characteristics. Self-Supervised Learning (SSL) offers a promising approach to address this issue, leveraging the abundant unlabeled data in radio astronomy to train neural networks that learn useful representations from radio images. This study explores the application of SSL to radio astronomy, comparing the performance of SSL-trained models with that of traditional models pretrained on natural images, evaluating the importance of data curation for SSL, and assessing the potential benefits of self-supervision to different domain-specific radio astronomy datasets. Our results indicate that, SSL-trained models achieve significant improvements over the baseline in several downstream tasks, especially in the linear evaluation setting; when the entire backbone is fine-tuned, the benefits of SSL are less evident but still outperform pretraining. These findings suggest that SSL can play a valuable role in efficiently enhancing the analysis of radio astronomical data. We introduce FedEvPrompt, a federated learning approach that integrates principles of evidential deep learning, prompt tuning, and knowledge distillation for distributed skin lesion classification. FedEvPrompt leverages two sets of prompts: b-prompts (for low-level basic visual knowledge) and t-prompts (for task-specific knowledge) prepended to frozen pre-trained Vision Transformer (ViT) models trained in an evidential learning framework to maximize class evidences. Crucially, knowledge sharing across federation clients is achieved only through knowledge distillation on attention maps generated by the local ViT models, ensuring enhanced privacy preservation compared to traditional parameter or synthetic image sharing methodologies. FedEvPrompt is optimized within a round-based learning paradigm, where each round involves training local models followed by attention maps sharing with all federation clients. Experimental validation conducted in a real distributed setting, on the ISIC2019 dataset, demonstrates the superior performance of FedEvPrompt against baseline federated learning algorithms and knowledge distillation methods, without sharing model parameters. In this paper, we present FedRewind, a novel approach to decentralized federated learning that leverages model exchange among nodes to address the issue of data distribution shift. Drawing inspiration from continual learning (CL) principles and cognitive neuroscience theories for memory retention, FedRewind implements a decentralized routing mechanism where nodes send/receive models to/from other nodes in the federation to address spatial distribution challenges inherent in distributed learning (FL). During local training, federation nodes periodically send their models back (i.e., rewind) to the nodes they received them from for a limited number of iterations. This strategy reduces the distribution shift between nodes' data, leading to enhanced learning and generalization performance. We evaluate our method on multiple benchmarks, demonstrating its superiority over standard decentralized federated learning methods and those enforcing specific routing schemes within the federation. Furthermore, the combination of federated and continual learning concepts enables our method to tackle the more challenging federated continual learning task, with data shifts over both space and time, surpassing existing baselines.

Accurate classification of Intraductal Papillary Mucinous Neoplasms (IPMN) is essential for identifying high-risk cases that require timely intervention. In this study, we develop a federated learning framework for multi-center IPMN classification utilizing a comprehensive pancreas MRI dataset. This dataset includes 653 T1-weighted and 656 T2-weighted MRI images, accompanied by corresponding IPMN risk scores from 7 leading medical institutions, making it the largest and most diverse dataset for IPMN classification to date. We assess the performance of DenseNet-121 in both centralized and federated settings for training on distributed data. Our results demonstrate that the federated learning approach achieves high classification accuracy comparable to centralized learning while ensuring data privacy across institutions. This work marks a significant advancement in collaborative IPMN classification, facilitating secure and high-accuracy model training across multiple centers.

Federated learning (FL) enables collaborative model training across institutions without sharing sensitive data, making it an attractive solution for medical imaging tasks. However, traditional FL methods, such as Federated Averaging (FedAvg), face difficulties in generalizing across domains due to variations in imaging protocols and patient demographics across institutions. This challenge is particularly evident in pancreas MRI segmentation, where anatomical variability and imaging artifacts significantly impact performance. In this paper, we conduct a comprehensive evaluation of FL algorithms for pancreas MRI segmentation and introduce a novel approach that incorporates adaptive aggregation weights. By dynamically adjusting the contribution of each client during model aggregation, our method accounts for domain-specific differences and improves generalization across heterogeneous datasets. Experimental results demonstrate that our approach enhances segmentation accuracy and reduces the impact of domain shift compared to conventional FL methods while maintaining privacy-preserving capabilities. Significant performance improvements are observed across multiple hospitals (centers).

This paper reviews the Challenge on Video Saliency Prediction at AIM 2024. The goal of the participants was to develop a method for predicting accurate saliency maps for the provided set of video sequences. Saliency maps are widely exploited in various applications, including video compression, quality assessment, visual perception studies, the advertising industry, etc. For this competition, a previously unused large-scale audio-visual mouse saliency (AViMoS) dataset of 1500 videos with more than 70 observers per video was collected using crowdsourced mouse tracking. The dataset collection methodology has been validated using conventional eye-tracking data and has shown high consistency. Over 30 teams registered in the challenge, and there are 7 teams that submitted the results in the final phase. The final phase solutions were tested and ranked by commonly used quality metrics on a private test subset. The results of this evaluation and the descriptions of the solutions are presented in this report. Automated volumetric segmentation of the pancreas on cross-sectional imaging is needed for diagnosis and follow-up of pancreatic diseases. While CT-based pancreatic segmentation is more established, MRI-based segmentation methods are understudied, largely due to a lack of publicly available datasets, benchmarking research efforts, and domain-specific deep learning methods. In this retrospective study, we collected a large dataset (767 scans from 499 participants) of T1-weighted (T1W) and T2-weighted (T2W) abdominal MRI series from five centers between March 2004 and November 2022. We also collected CT scans of 1,350 patients from publicly available sources for benchmarking purposes. We developed a new pancreas segmentation method, called PanSegNet, combining the strengths of nnUNet and a Transformer network with a new linear attention module enabling volumetric computation. We tested PanSegNet's accuracy in cross-modality (a total of 2,117 scans) and cross-center settings with Dice and Hausdorff distance (HD95) evaluation metrics. We used Cohen's kappa statistics for intra and inter-rater agreement evaluation and paired t-tests for volume and Dice comparisons, respectively. For segmentation accuracy, we achieved Dice coefficients of 88.3% (std: 7.2%, at case level) with CT, 85.0% (std: 7.9%) with T1W MRI, and 86.3% (std: 6.4%) with T2W MRI. There was a high correlation for pancreas volume prediction with R^2 of 0.91, 0.84, and 0.85 for CT, T1W, and T2W, respectively. We found moderate inter-observer (0.624 and 0.638 for T1W and T2W MRI, respectively) and high intra-observer agreement scores. All MRI data is made available at https://osf.io/kysnj/. Recent advancements in video saliency prediction (VSP) have shown promising performance compared to the human visual system, whose emulation is the primary goal of VSP. However, current state-of-the-art models employ spatio-temporal transformers trained on limited amounts of data, hindering generalizability adaptation to downstream tasks. The benefits of vision foundation models present a potential solution to improve the VSP process. However, adapting image foundation models to the video domain presents significant challenges in modeling scene dynamics and capturing temporal information. To address these challenges, and as the first initiative to design a VSP model based on video foundation models, we introduce SalFoM, a novel encoder-decoder video transformer architecture. Our model employs UnMasked Teacher (UMT) as feature extractor and presents a heterogeneous decoder which features a locality-aware spatio-temporal transformer and integrates local and global spatio-temporal information from various perspectives to produce the final saliency map. We present DiffExplainer, a novel framework that, leveraging language-vision models, enables multimodal global explainability. DiffExplainer employs diffusion models conditioned on optimized text prompts, synthesizing images that maximize class outputs and hidden features of a classifier, thus providing a visual tool for explaining decisions. Moreover, the analysis of generated visual descriptions allows for automatic identification of biases and spurious features, as opposed to traditional methods that often rely on manual intervention. The cross-modal transferability of language-vision models also enables the possibility to describe decisions in a more human-interpretable way, i.e., through text. We conduct comprehensive experiments, which include an extensive user study, demonstrating the effectiveness of DiffExplainer on 1) the generation of high-quality images explaining model decisions, surpassing existing activation maximization methods, and 2) the automated identification of biases and spurious features.

We present SAM, a biologically-plausible selective attention-driven modulation approach to enhance classification models in a continual learning setting. Inspired by neurophysiological evidence that the primary visual cortex does not contribute to object manifold untangling for categorization and that primordial attention biases are still embedded in the modern brain, we propose to employ auxiliary saliency prediction features as a modulation signal to drive and stabilize the learning of a sequence of non-i.i.d. classification tasks. Experimental results confirm that SAM effectively enhances the performance (in some cases up to about twenty percent points) of state-of-the-art continual learning methods, both in class-incremental and task-incremental settings. Moreover, we show that attention-based modulation successfully encourages the learning of features that are more robust to the presence of spurious features and to adversarial attacks than baseline methods. Background: To date, no standardized protocols nor a quantitative assessment of the near-infrared fluorescence angiography with indocyanine green (NIR-ICG) are available. The aim of this study was to evaluate the timing of fluorescence as a reproducible parameter and its efficacy in predicting anastomotic leakage (AL) in colorectal surgery. Methods: A consecutive cohort of 108 patients undergoing minimally invasive elective procedures for colorectal cancer was prospectively enrolled. The difference between macro and microperfusion DeltaT was obtained by calculating the timing of fluorescence at the level of iliac artery division and colonic wall, respectively. Results: Subjects with a DeltaT higher 15.5 s had a higher tendency to develop an AL (p lower 0.01). The DeltaT/heart rate interaction was found to predict AL with an odds ratio of 1.02 (p lower 0.01); a cut-off threshold of 832 was identified (sensitivity 0.86, specificity 0.77). Perfusion parameters were also associated with a faster bowel motility resumption and a reduced length of hospital stay. Conclusions: The analysis of the timing of fluorescence provides a quantitative, easy evaluation of tissue perfusion. A DeltaT/HR interaction higher 832 may be used as a real-time parameter to guide surgical decision making in colorectal surgery.

Optical atomic clocks demonstrate a better stability and lower systematic uncertainty than the highest performance microwave atomic clocks. However, the best performing optical clocks have a large footprint in a laboratory environment and require specialist skills to maintain continuous operation. Growing and evolving needs across several sectors are increasing the demand for compact robust and portable devices at this capability level. In this paper we discuss the design of a physics package for a compact laser-cooled 88Sr+ optical clock that would, with further development, be suitable for space deployment. We review the design parameters to target a relative frequency uncertainty at the low parts in 10^18 with this system. We then explain the results of finite element modelling to simulate the response of the ion trap and vacuum chamber to vibration, shock and thermal conditions expected during launch and space deployment. Additionally, an electrostatic model has been developed to investigate the relationship between the ion trap geometrical tolerances and the trapping efficiency. In upcoming 6G networks, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are expected to play a fundamental role by acting as mobile base stations, particularly for demanding vehicle-to-everything (V2X) applications. In this scenario, one of the most challenging problems is the design of trajectories for multiple UAVs, cooperatively serving the same area. Such joint trajectory design can be performed using multi-agent deep reinforcement learning (MADRL) algorithms, but ensuring collision-free paths among UAVs becomes a critical challenge. Traditional methods involve imposing high penalties during training to discourage unsafe conditions, but these can be proven to be ineffective, whereas binary masks can be used to restrict unsafe actions, but naively applying them to all agents can lead to suboptimal solutions and inefficiencies. To address these issues, we propose a rank-based binary masking approach. Higher-ranked UAVs move optimally, while lower-ranked UAVs use this information to define improved binary masks, reducing the number of unsafe actions. Domain generalization aims to train models on multiple source domains so that they can generalize well to unseen target domains. Among many domain generalization methods, Fourier-transform-based domain generalization methods have gained popularity primarily because they exploit the power of Fourier transformation to capture essential patterns and regularities in the data, making the model more robust to domain shifts. The mainstream Fourier-transform-based domain generalization swaps the Fourier amplitude spectrum while preserving the phase spectrum between the source and the target images. However, it neglects background interference in the amplitude spectrum. To overcome this limitation, we introduce a soft-thresholding function in the Fourier domain. We apply this newly designed algorithm to retinal fundus image segmentation, which is important for diagnosing ocular diseases but the neural network's performance can degrade across different sources due to domain shifts. The proposed technique basically enhances fundus image augmentation by eliminating small values in the Fourier domain and providing better generalization. The innovative nature of the soft thresholding fused with Fourier-transform-based domain generalization improves neural network models' performance by reducing the target images' background interference significantly. Intraductal Papillary Mucinous Neoplasm (IPMN) cysts are pre-malignant pancreas lesions, and they can progress into pancreatic cancer. Therefore, detecting and stratifying their risk level is of ultimate importance for effective treatment planning and disease control. However, this is a highly challenging task because of the diverse and irregular shape, texture, and size of the IPMN cysts as well as the pancreas. In this study, we propose a novel computer-aided diagnosis pipeline for IPMN risk classification from multi-contrast MRI scans. Our proposed analysis framework includes an efficient volumetric self-adapting segmentation strategy for pancreas delineation, followed by a newly designed deep learning-based classification scheme with a radiomics-based predictive approach. We test our proposed decision-fusion model in multi-center data sets of 246 multi-contrast MRI scans and obtain superior performance to the state of the art (SOTA) in this field. Our ablation studies demonstrate the significance of both radiomics and deep learning modules for achieving the new SOTA performance compared to international guidelines and published studies (81.9\% vs 61.3\% in accuracy). Creating high-quality materials in computer graphics is a challenging and time-consuming task, which requires great expertise. To simplify this process, we introduce MatFuse, a unified approach that harnesses the generative power of diffusion models for creation and editing of 3D materials. Our method integrates multiple sources of conditioning, including color palettes, sketches, text, and pictures, enhancing creative possibilities and granting fine-grained control over material synthesis. Additionally, MatFuse enables map-level material editing capabilities through latent manipulation by means of a multi-encoder compression model which learns a disentangled latent representation for each map. We demonstrate the effectiveness of MatFuse under multiple conditioning settings and explore the potential of material editing. Finally, we assess the quality of the generated materials both quantitatively in terms of CLIP-IQA and FID scores and qualitatively by conducting a user study. Recently, the scientific progress of Advanced Driver Assistance System solutions (ADAS) has played a key role in enhancing the overall safety of driving. ADAS technology enables active control of vehicles to prevent potentially risky situations. An important aspect that researchers have focused on is the analysis of the driver attention level, as recent reports confirmed a rising number of accidents caused by drowsiness or lack of attentiveness. To address this issue, various studies have suggested monitoring the driver physiological state, as there exists a well-established connection between the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) and the level of attention. For our study, we designed an innovative bio-sensor comprising near-infrared LED emitters and photo-detectors, specifically a Silicon PhotoMultiplier device. This allowed us to assess the driver physiological status by analyzing the associated PhotoPlethysmography (PPG) signal.Furthermore, we developed an embedded time-domain hyper-filtering technique in conjunction with a 1D Temporal Convolutional architecture that embdes a progressive dilation setup. This integrated system enables near real-time classification of driver drowsiness, yielding remarkable accuracy levels of approximately 96%.

Visual Saliency refers to the innate human mechanism of focusing on and extracting important features from the observed environment. Recently, there has been a notable surge of interest in the field of automotive research regarding the estimation of visual saliency. While operating a vehicle, drivers naturally direct their attention towards specific objects, employing brain-driven saliency mechanisms that prioritize certain elements over others. In this investigation, we present an intelligent system that combines a drowsiness detection system for drivers with a scene comprehension pipeline based on saliency. To achieve this, we have implemented a specialized 3D deep network for semantic segmentation, which has been pretrained and tailored for processing the frames captured by an automotive-grade external camera. The proposed pipeline was hosted on an embedded platform utilizing the STA1295 core, featuring ARM A7 dual-cores, and embeds an hardware accelerator. Additionally, we employ an innovative biosensor embedded on the car steering wheel to monitor the driver drowsiness, gathering the PhotoPlethysmoGraphy (PPG) signal of the driver. A dedicated 1D temporal deep convolutional network has been devised to classify the collected PPG time-series, enabling us to assess the driver level of attentiveness. Ultimately, we compare the determined attention level of the driver with the corresponding saliency-based scene classification to evaluate the overall safety level. The efficacy of the proposed pipeline has been validated through extensive experimental results.

Immunotherapy emerges as promising approach for treating cancer. Encouraging findings have validated the efficacy of immunotherapy medications in addressing tumors, resulting in prolonged survival rates and notable reductions in toxicity compared to conventional chemotherapy methods. However, the pool of eligible patients for immunotherapy remains relatively small, indicating a lack of comprehensive understanding regarding the physiological mechanisms responsible for favorable treatment response in certain individuals while others experience limited benefits. To tackle this issue, the authors present an innovative strategy that harnesses a non-linear cellular architecture in conjunction with a deep downstream classifier. This approach aims to carefully select and enhance 2D features extracted from chest-abdomen CT images, thereby improving the prediction of treatment outcomes. The proposed pipeline has been meticulously designed to seamlessly integrate with an advanced embedded Point of Care system. In this context, the authors present a compelling case study focused on Metastatic Urothelial Carcinoma (mUC), a particularly aggressive form of cancer. Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) have demonstrated their ability to generate synthetic samples that match a target distribution. However, from a privacy perspective, using GANs as a proxy for data sharing is not a safe solution, as they tend to embed near-duplicates of real samples in the latent space. Recent works, inspired by k-anonymity principles, address this issue through sample aggregation in the latent space, with the drawback of reducing the dataset by a factor of k. Our work aims to mitigate this problem by proposing a latent space navigation strategy able to generate diverse synthetic samples that may support effective training of deep models, while addressing privacy concerns in a principled way. Our approach leverages an auxiliary identity classifier as a guide to non-linearly walk between points in the latent space, minimizing the risk of collision with near-duplicates of real samples. We empirically demonstrate that, given any random pair of points in the latent space, our walking strategy is safer than linear interpolation. We then test our path-finding strategy combined to k-same methods and demonstrate, on two benchmarks for tuberculosis and diabetic retinopathy classification, that training a model using samples generated by our approach mitigate drops in performance, while keeping privacy preservation., Comment: Accepted at MICCAI 2023

Along with the nearing completion of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), comes an increasing demand for accurate and reliable automated solutions to extract valuable information from the vast amount of data it will allow acquiring. Automated source finding is a particularly important task in this context, as it enables the detection and classification of astronomical objects. Deep-learning-based object detection and semantic segmentation models have proven to be suitable for this purpose. However, training such deep networks requires a high volume of labeled data, which is not trivial to obtain in the context of radio astronomy. Since data needs to be manually labeled by experts, this process is not scalable to large dataset sizes, limiting the possibilities of leveraging deep networks to address several tasks. In this work, we propose RADiff, a generative approach based on conditional diffusion models trained over an annotated radio dataset to generate synthetic images, containing radio sources of different morphologies, to augment existing datasets and reduce the problems caused by class imbalances. We also show that it is possible to generate fully-synthetic image-annotation pairs to automatically augment any annotated dataset. We evaluate the effectiveness of this approach by training a semantic segmentation model on a real dataset augmented in two ways: 1) using synthetic images obtained from real masks, and 2) generating images from synthetic semantic masks. We show an improvement in performance when applying augmentation, gaining up to 18% in performance when using real masks and 4% when augmenting with synthetic masks. Finally, we employ this model to generate large-scale radio maps with the objective of simulating Data Challenges.

Polygonal meshes have become the standard for discretely approximating 3D shapes, thanks to their efficiency and high flexibility in capturing non-uniform shapes. This non-uniformity, however, leads to irregularity in the mesh structure, making tasks like segmentation of 3D meshes particularly challenging. Semantic segmentation of 3D mesh has been typically addressed through CNN-based approaches, leading to good accuracy. Recently, transformers have gained enough momentum both in NLP and computer vision fields, achieving performance at least on par with CNN models, supporting the long-sought architecture universalism. Following this trend, we propose a transformer-based method for semantic segmentation of 3D mesh motivated by a better modeling of the graph structure of meshes, by means of global attention mechanisms. In order to address the limitations of standard transformer architectures in modeling relative positions of non-sequential data, as in the case of 3D meshes, as well as in capturing the local context, we perform positional encoding by means the Laplacian eigenvectors of the adjacency matrix, replacing the traditional sinusoidal positional encodings, and by introducing clustering-based features into the self-attention and cross-attention operators. Experimental results, carried out on three sets of the Shape COSEG Dataset, on the human segmentation dataset proposed in Maron et al., 2017 and on the ShapeNet benchmark, show how the proposed approach yields state-of-the-art performance on semantic segmentation of 3D meshes.

Humans can learn incrementally, whereas neural networks forget previously acquired information catastrophically. Continual Learning (CL) approaches seek to bridge this gap by facilitating the transfer of knowledge to both previous tasks (backward transfer) and future ones (forward transfer) during training. Recent research has shown that self-supervision can produce versatile models that can generalize well to diverse downstream tasks. However, contrastive self-supervised learning (CSSL), a popular self-supervision technique, has limited effectiveness in online CL (OCL). OCL only permits one iteration of the input dataset, and CSSL's low sample efficiency hinders its use on the input data-stream. In this work, we propose Continual Learning via Equivariant Regularization (CLER), an OCL approach that leverages equivariant tasks for self-supervision, avoiding CSSL's limitations. Our method represents the first attempt at combining equivariant knowledge with CL and can be easily integrated with existing OCL methods. Continual learning has recently attracted attention from the research community, as it aims to solve long-standing limitations of classic supervisedly-trained models. However, most research on this subject has tackled continual learning in simple image classification scenarios. In this paper, we present a benchmark of state-of-the-art continual learning methods on video action recognition. Besides the increased complexity due to the temporal dimension, the video setting imposes stronger requirements on computing resources for top-performing rehearsal methods. To counteract the increased memory requirements, we present two method-agnostic variants for rehearsal methods, exploiting measures of either model confidence or data information to select memorable samples. Our experiments show that, as expected from the literature, rehearsal methods outperform other approaches; moreover, the proposed memory-efficient variants are shown to be effective at retaining a certain level of performance with a smaller buffer size.

The food supply chain, following its globalization, has become very complex. Such complexities, introduce factors that influence adversely the quality of intermediate and final products. Strict constraints regarding parameters such as maintenance temperatures and transportation times must be respected in order to ensure top quality and reduce to a minimum the detrimental effects to public health. This is a multi-factorial endeavor and all of the involved stakeholders must accept and manage the logistics burden to achieve the best possible results. However, such burden comes together with additional complexities and costs regarding data storage, business process management and company specific standard operating procedures and as such, automated methods must be devised to reduce the impact of such intrusive operations. For the above reasons, in this paper we present BioTrak: a platform capable of registering and visualizing the whole chain of transformation and transportation processes including the monitoring of cold chain logistics of food ingredients starting from the raw material producers until the final product arrives to the end-consumer. The platform includes Business Process Modelling methods to aid food supply chain stakeholders to optimize their processes and also integrates a blockchain for guaranteeing the integrity, transparency and accountability of the data.

Optical dipole micro-traps for atoms based on constructive superposition of two-colour evanescent light waves, formed by corresponding optical modes of two crossed suspended photonic rib waveguides, are modelled. The main parameters of the traps for rubidium atoms, such as potential depth, tunnelling rates of atoms from the trap and coherence time of the trapped atoms are estimated. In recent years, deep learning has been successfully applied in various scientific domains. Following these promising results and performances, it has recently also started being evaluated in the domain of radio astronomy. In particular, since radio astronomy is entering the Big Data era, with the advent of the largest telescope in the world - the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), the task of automatic object detection and instance segmentation is crucial for source finding and analysis. In this work, we explore the performance of the most affirmed deep learning approaches, applied to astronomical images obtained by radio interferometric instrumentation, to solve the task of automatic source detection. This is carried out by applying models designed to accomplish two different kinds of tasks: object detection and semantic segmentation. The goal is to provide an overview of existing techniques, in terms of prediction performance and computational efficiency, to scientists in the astrophysics community who would like to employ machine learning in their research.
