1. Vulnerability Detection in Ethereum Smart Contracts via Machine Learning: A Qualitative Analysis

Abstract

Smart contracts are central to a myriad of critical blockchain applications, from financial transactions to supply chain management. However, their adoption is hindered by security vulnerabilities that can result in significant financial losses. Most vulnerability detection tools and methods available nowadays leverage either static analysis methods or machine learning. Unfortunately, as valuable as they are, both approaches suffer from limitations that make them only partially effective. In this survey, we analyze the state of the art in machine-learning vulnerability detection for Ethereum smart contracts, by categorizing existing tools and methodologies, evaluating them, and highlighting their limitations. Our critical assessment unveils issues such as restricted vulnerability coverage and dataset construction flaws, providing us with new metrics to overcome the difficulties that restrain a sound comparison of existing solutions. Driven by our findings, we discuss best practices to enhance the accuracy, scope, and efficiency of vulnerability detection in smart contracts. Our guidelines address the known flaws while at the same time opening new avenues for research and development. By shedding light on current challenges and offering novel directions for improvement, we contribute to the advancement of secure smart contract development and blockchain technology as a whole.

2. Approximate Partially Decentralized Linear EZF Precoding for Massive MU-MIMO Systems

Abstract

Massive multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) systems enable high spatial resolution, high spectral efficiency, and improved link reliability compared to traditional MIMO systems due to the large number of antenna elements deployed at the base station (BS). Nevertheless, conventional massive MU-MIMO BS transceiver designs rely on centralized linear precoding algorithms, which entail high interconnect data rates and a prohibitive complexity at the centralized baseband processing unit. In this paper, we consider an MU-MIMO system, where each user device is served with multiple independent data streams in the downlink. To address the aforementioned challenges, we propose a novel decentralized BS architecture, and develop a novel decentralized precoding algorithm based on eigen-zero-forcing (EZF). Our proposed approach relies on parallelizing the baseband processing tasks across multiple antenna clusters at the BS, while minimizing the interconnection requirements between the clusters, and is shown to closely approach the performance of centralized EZF., Comment: Accepted by IEEE VTC2024-Fall

3. Genealogical processes of non-neutral population models under rapid mutation

Abstract

We show that genealogical trees arising from a broad class of non-neutral models of population evolution converge to the Kingman coalescent under a suitable rescaling of time. As well as non-neutral biological evolution, our results apply to genetic algorithms encompassing the prominent class of sequential Monte Carlo (SMC) methods. The time rescaling we need differs slightly from that used in classical results for convergence to the Kingman coalescent, which has implications for the performance of different resampling schemes in SMC algorithms. In addition, our work substantially simplifies earlier proofs of convergence to the Kingman coalescent, and corrects an error common to several earlier results.

4. Flexible and Reversible Conversion between Extensible Records and Overloading Constraints for ML

Abstract

Most ML-like functional languages provide records and overloading as unrelated features. Records not only represent data structures, but are also used to implement dictionary passing, whereas overloading produces type constraints that are basically dictionaries subject to compiler-driven dispatching. In this paper we explore how records and overloading constraints can be converted one into the other, allowing the programmer to switch between the two at a very reasonable cost in terms of syntactic overhead. To achieve this we introduce two language constructs, namely inject and eject, performing a type-driven syntactic transformation. The former literally injects constraints into the type and produces a function adding an extra record argument. The latter does the opposite, ejecting a record argument from a function and turning fields into type constraints. The conversion is reversible and can be restricted to a subset of symbols, granting additional control to the programmer. Although what we call inject has already been proposed in literature, making it a language operator and coupling it with its reverse counterpart represent a novel design. The goal is to allow the programmer to switch from a dictionary-passing style to compiler-assisted constraint resolution, and vice versa, enabling reuse between libraries that otherwise would not interoperate., Comment: 47 pages. Abstract

Smart contracts have played a pivotal role in the evolution of blockchains and Decentralized Applications (DApps). As DApps continue to gain widespread adoption, multiple smart contract languages have been and are being made available to developers, each with its distinctive features, strengths, and weaknesses. In this paper, we examine the smart contract languages used in major blockchain platforms, with the goal of providing a comprehensive assessment of their main properties. Our analysis targets the programming languages rather than the underlying architecture: as a result, while we do consider the interplay between language design and blockchain model, our main focus remains on language-specific features such as usability, programming style, safety and security. To conduct our assessment, we propose an original benchmark which encompasses a wide, yet manageable, spectrum of key use cases that cut across all the smart contract languages under examination.

Abstract

In this work, we develop excursion theory for the Wright--Fisher diffusion with mutation. Our construction is intermediate between the classical excursion theory where all excursions begin and end at a single point and the more general approach considering excursions of processes from general sets. Since the Wright--Fisher diffusion has two boundary points, it is natural to construct excursions which start from a specified boundary point, and end at one of two boundary points which determine the next starting point. In order to do this we study the killed Wright--Fisher diffusion, which is sent to a cemetery state whenever it hits either endpoint. We then construct a marked Poisson process of such killed paths which, when concatenated, produce a pathwise construction of the Wright--Fisher diffusion., Comment: 29 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

Remote Sensing (RS) and Geographic Information Science (GIS) techniques are powerful tools for spatial data collection, analysis, management, and digitization within cultural heritage frameworks. Despite their capabilities, challenges remain in automating data semantic classification for conservation purposes. To address this, leveraging airborne Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR) point clouds, complex spatial analyses, and automated data structuring is crucial for supporting heritage preservation and knowledge processes. In this context, the present contribution investigates the latest Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies for automating existing LiDAR data structuring, focusing on the case study of Sardinia coastlines. Moreover, the study preliminary addresses automation challenges in the perspective of historical defensive landscapes mapping. Since historical defensive architectures and landscapes are characterized by several challenging complexities—including their association with dark periods in recent history and chronological stratification—their digitization and preservation are highly multidisciplinary issues. This research aims to improve data structuring automation in these large heritage contexts with a multiscale approach by applying Machine Learning (ML) techniques to low-scale 3D Airborne Laser Scanning (ALS) point clouds. The study thus develops a predictive Deep Learning Model (DLM) for the semantic segmentation of sparse point clouds (2), adaptable to large landscape heritage contexts and heterogeneous data scales. Additionally, a preliminary investigation into object-detection methods has been conducted to map specific fortification artifacts efficiently.

Abstract

Abstract Historical landscapes in Italy have been slowly changing over the centuries and this is because their features, once fixed into specific shapes, were perpetuated until new economic and social developments occurred. Yet, in the Alpine region, this territorial organisation underwent sudden changes after World War II (WW II), resulting in a loss in population and traditional agropastoral production in favour of skiing plants and holiday houses. Moreover, the loss of traditional knowledge pertaining to environmental behaviour has resulted in the urbanisation of lands that are vulnerable to extreme events. In turn, this has hindered sustainable urban development. Nowadays, modern mapping technologies enable the state of the landscape to be assessed before, during, and after extreme events, the increased frequency of which may be related to climate change. The case study examined in this paper is the flood that hit Limone Piemonte, Italy, between the 2nd and 3rd October 2020. On that occasion, an aerial survey of the affected areas was carried out using Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles (UAV) a few weeks after the event. Spatial analyses were also performed based on very high-resolution satellite imagery acquired a few days after the event in order to determine where to plan more detailed three-dimensional (3D) surveys. This has enabled assessments of damages at different map scales to be performed. Thanks to the availability of pre-event multitemporal cartographic reference datasets, it was possible to monitor the historical evolution of the affected areas. It was possible to assess the vulnerable areas before the event, as well as to evaluate the morphological and settlement changes after the disaster. Therefore, one of the goals of this manuscript is to demonstrate that geoinformation systems are among the primary technical tools used to analyse environmental and climatic alterations that impact landscapes. Finally, a 3D model of the affected areas was produced, fulfilling another goal of the research by providing the public administration with a sustainable and innovative tool for territorial and landscape management, in accordance with the 11th pillar of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs).

9. University Education and Entrepreneurial Intentions of European Students: Insights into the Theory of Planned Behaviour Complemented by Skills

Abstract

Despite its ever-growing volume, research on entrepreneurial intentions remains largely confined within the context of entrepreneurial education and training. To enhance our understanding of the construct within broader layers of context, we evaluate the role of skills developed during general--not specific to entrepreneurship--university education. Employing a large sample of 2553 observations from various universities and fields of specialisation, in four European countries, we explore learners' entrepreneurial intentions, conditional upon the assertions of the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) with the added dimension of skills. Our hypotheses are tested via a Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) analysis which enables effective identification of similarities and differences across diverse contexts. Our findings reaffirm the significance of attitudes, social norms, and behavioural control, as statistically significant predictors of learners' motivation to engage in entrepreneurial activities. This contributes to the unifying power of TPB through testing its in-breadth predictive power. Moreover, the role of skills is highlighted as the main construct affecting university student's intentions to engage in entrepreneurial activities.

10. Bernoulli factories and duality in Wright-Fisher and Allen-Cahn models of population genetics

Abstract

Mathematical models of genetic evolution often come in pairs, connected by a so-called duality relation. The most seminal example are the Wright-Fisher diffusion and the Kingman coalescent, where the former describes the stochastic evolution of neutral allele frequencies in a large population forwards in time, and the latter describes the genetic ancestry of randomly sampled individuals from the population backwards in time. As well as providing a richer description than either model in isolation, duality often yields equations satisfied by quantities of interest. We employ the so-called Bernoulli factory - a celebrated tool in simulation-based computing - to derive duality relations for broad classes of genetics models. As concrete examples, we present Wright-Fisher diffusions with general drift functions, and Allen-Cahn equations with general, nonlinear forcing terms. The drift and forcing functions can be interpreted as the action of frequency-dependent selection. Abstract

Gut microbiota is recognized nowadays as one of the key players in the development of several gastro-intestinal diseases. The first studies focused mainly on healthy subjects with staining of main bacterial species via culture-based techniques. Subsequently, lots of studies tried to focus on principal esophageal disease enlarged the knowledge on esophageal microbial environment and its role in pathogenesis. Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), the most widespread esophageal condition, seems related to a certain degree of mucosal inflammation, via interleukin (IL) 8 potentially enhanced by bacterial components, lipopolysaccharide (LPS) above all. Gram- bacteria, producing LPS), such as Campylobacter genus, have been found associated with GERD. Barrett esophagus (BE) seems characterized by a Gram- and microaerophils-shaped microbiota. Esophageal cancer (EC) development leads to an overturn in the esophageal environment with the shift from an oral-like microbiome to a prevalently low-abundant and low-diverse Gram--shaped microbiome. Although underinvestigated, also changes in the esophageal microbiome are associated with rare chronic inflammatory or neuropathic disease pathogenesis. The paucity of knowledge about the microbiota-driven mechanisms in esophageal disease pathogenesis is mainly due to the scarce sensitivity of sequencing technology and culture methods applied so far to study commensals in the esophagus. However, the recent advances in molecular techniques, especially with the advent of non-culture-based genomic sequencing tools and the implementation of multi-omics approaches, have revolutionized the microbiome field, with promises of implementing the current knowledge, discovering more mechanisms underneath, and giving insights into the development of novel therapies aimed to re-establish the microbial equilibrium for ameliorating esophageal diseases..

Abstract

Abstract A search for leptoquark pair production decaying into $$te^- \bar{t}e^+$$ t e - t ¯ e + or $$t\mu ^- \bar{t}\mu ^+$$ t μ - t ¯ μ + in final states with multiple leptons is presented. The search is based on a dataset of pp collisions at $$\sqrt{s}=13~\text {TeV} $$ s = 13 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector during Run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb $$^{-1}$$ - 1 . Four signal regions, with the requirement of at least three light leptons (electron or muon) and at least two jets out of which at least one jet is identified as coming from a b-hadron, are considered based on the number of leptons of a given flavour. The main background processes are estimated using dedicated control regions in a simultaneous fit with the signal regions to data. No excess above the Standard Model background prediction is observed and 95% confidence level limits on the production cross section times branching ratio are derived as a function of the leptoquark mass. Under the assumption of exclusive decays into $$te^{-}$$ t e - ( $$t\mu ^{-}$$ t μ - ), the corresponding lower limit on the scalar mixed-generation leptoquark mass $$m_{\textrm{LQ}_{\textrm{mix}}^{\textrm{d}}}$$ m LQ mix d is at 1.58 (1.59) TeV and on the vector leptoquark mass $$m_{{\tilde{U}}_1}$$ m U ~ 1 at 1.67 (1.67) TeV in the minimal coupling scenario and at 1.95 (1.95) TeV in the Yang–Mills scenario.

Abstract

The Wright--Fisher diffusion is important in population genetics in modelling the evolution of allele frequencies over time subject to the influence of biological phenomena such as selection, mutation, and genetic drift. Simulating paths of the process is challenging due to the form of the transition density. We present EWF, a robust and efficient sampler which returns exact draws for the diffusion and diffusion bridge processes, accounting for general models of selection including those with frequency-dependence. Given a configuration of selection, mutation, and endpoints, EWF returns draws at the requested sampling times from the law of the corresponding Wright--Fisher process. Output was validated by comparison to approximations of the transition density via the Kolmogorov--Smirnov test and QQ plots. Abstract

The mannose-rich exopolysaccharide EPS B3-15, produced by the thermophilic Bacillus licheniformis B3-15, was previously reported to possess promising potentialities as antiviral and immunomodulatory agent, and in preventing the adhesion of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus. In this study, EPS B3-15 was evaluated for its anti-inflammatory activity in LPS-induced macrophages and the ability to contrast the adhesion of Klebsiella pneumoniae and Streptococcus pneumoniae as pathogenic bacteria of the respiratory tract. Without affecting the macrophages viability, the EPS at low concentration (300 μg/mL) significantly downregulated the gene expression of iNOS and the consequent NO generation, and it also decreased the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Moreover, the EPS reduced the adhesion of Str. pneumoniae (47 %) more efficiently than K. pneumoniae (38 %), due to its ability to modify the abiotic surfaces properties and alter the charges of bacterial-cell surface of Gram-positive more than Gram-negative. As able to reduce the inflammatory responses in macrophage cells and simultaneously prevent biofilm-related to the respiratory tract infections, EPS B3-15 could have potential use as nasal spray with anti-inflammatory action and surface-coating agent for medical devices.

Abstract

The interest in studies on 3D city models has renewed over time thanks to technological innovations that concern the methods of data acquisition and automatic classification of unstructured point clouds, to model increasingly specialized geometric objects for the growing needs of urban transformation management. Managing geometric and semantic information in cognitive systems, based on standards, increasingly open to the inquiries, analyses, and predictions that today are necessary to implement for future assessments, can digitally twin reality. The problem focused on in this work is the modelling phase, which requires efficient automatisms to make the production phase of geometric objects more sustainable, whether they are then destined to become parametric features in a BIM/CIM environment or 3D geometric objects of a geodatabase.A comprehensive methodology for automating the generation of 3D meshes from point cloud data using Python code, with a focus on practical implementation is presented parallelly to evaluations regarding the generation of the geometric 3D contents of the urban environment representation, depending on whether or not it includes examples of architectural heritage (of all ages). Leveraging the Open3D library and NumPy, the methodology provides different experiences, tests, and related discussions in the field of architectural and urban 3D surface reconstruction and visualization. Abstract

Abstract The garfish Belone belone represents the only valid endemic Belone species for the Mediterranean Sea and the eastern Atlantic Ocean. It shows a wide global distribution range, with a high commercial value and ecological relevance in the pelagic domain. Despite this, there needs to be more knowledge regarding the otoliths of this species, with the total absence of descriptions regarding asterisci and lapilli from Mediterranean populations and a lack of studies on the reliability of shape analysis on its sagittae. The present paper aims to provide the first main contours description of the three otoliths pairs from a Mediterranean population, providing an accurate investigation of morphology, morphometry, and intra-specific variability of sagittae, lapilli, and asterisci. Results showed (i) the absence of directional bilateral asymmetry and sexual asymmetry for the three otoliths pairs, (ii) a different morphology and morphometry of sagittae, lapilli and asterisci than those described in the literature, and (iii) an enhanced variability between sagittae morphometry and shape between the three investigated size classes. All these data confirmed the reliability of the studied species of shape analysis, showing a geographical and size-related variability of otoliths features probably related to genetics, environmental conditions, and life habits variations.

Abstract

Quantum many-core processors are envisioned as the ultimate solution for the scalability of quantum computers. Based upon Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum (NISQ) chips interconnected in a sort of quantum intranet, they enable large algorithms to be executed on current and close future technology. In order to optimize such architectures, it is crucial to develop tools that allow specific design space explorations. To this aim, in this paper we present a technique to perform a spatio-temporal characterization of quantum circuits running in multi-chip quantum computers. Specifically, we focus on the analysis of the qubit traffic resulting from operations that involve qubits residing in different cores, and hence quantum communication across chips, while also giving importance to the amount of intra-core operations that occur in between those communications. Using specific multi-core performance metrics and a complete set of benchmarks, our analysis showcases the opportunities that the proposed approach may provide to guide the design of multi-core quantum computers and their interconnects., Comment: 7 pages, to be presented at the ACM NanoCom 2022

Abstract

In recent years, the demand for flexible and sustainable strategies in digitization processes has represented a significant challenge for the heritage documentation research community. In particular, the tasks of parametric modelling and AI-based semantic enrichment operations, necessary but traditionally time-consuming, is extremely onerous from a user-oriented perspective. Many efforts of the research community have been dedicated to enhancing efficiency through automation, and one of the possible solutions is represented by the employment of machine learning strategies. This study introduces an innovative methodology that integrates Visual Programming Language platforms and 3D Python libraries, thereby implementing the Scan-to-BIM approach. Two case studies - characterized by varying scales, resolutions, and accuracies - have been analysed to validate the proposed pipeline, demonstrating its flexibility and scalability across architectural objects and archaeological assets belonging to museum collections. The workflow involves several steps, starting from classified 3D and 2D data segmented using machine learning techniques with the aim of managing semantically enriched reality-based data in BIM/HBIM environment without scarifying accuracy criteria. Results highlight the methodology's efficiency and adaptability in diverse contexts, offering a compelling alternative to labour-intensive Scan-to-BIM processes. Ultimately, this methodology contributes to the automation in cultural heritage digitisation, underlining the need for comprehensive standards and protocols in this dynamic domain.
