Distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) sees increased utilization in the seismological community in recent years and various applications are investigated for the usage of DAS in different branches of seismology.Strong-motion seismology uses records of earthquakes of engineering concern (MW>4.5) with hypocentral distances within few hundreds of kilometers. This demands dense networks over a wide area and installation of typical strong-motion instruments (accelerometers) can be achieved quickly and at a reasonable budget, compared to other network types. For DAS, installation and operation are more involved, and deployment is very still limited. Consequently, DAS recordings of nearby large events are still very unlikely and rare compared to accelerometers.On September 18, 2022, a shallow earthquake sequence with a MW 6.9 mainshock struck near Chishang (Taiwan) and was recorded by DAS in Hualien city, appr. 100 km north. Shaking of the mainshock and several aftershocks were noticeable in Hualien, though not damaging with PGA recorded at 0.28 m/s^2 nearby the DAS site. The DAS campaign was originally conceptualized as a test suite with different fiber installations: including buried, within a gutter (as in commercial fiber installation) and loose within a basement. The test site is in an urban area affected by surface rupturing during the 2018 Hualien earthquake.The presented recordings provide not only an unprecedented insight how strong-motion appears on DAS but also how effective different installation techniques are for this kind of event. In this article, a high-resolution acoustic emission sensor, accelerometer and broadband seismometer array data set is made available and described in detail from in-situ experiments performed at Äspö Hard Rock Laboratory in May and June 2015. The main goal of the hydraulic stimulation tests in a horizontal borehole at 410 m depth in naturally fractured granitic rock mass is to demonstrate the technical feasibility to generate multi-stage heat exchangers in a controlled way superior to former massive stimulations applied in enhanced geothermal projects. A set of six, sub-parallel hydraulic fractures is propagated from an injection borehole drilled parallel to minimum horizontal in-situ stress, and monitored by an extensive complementary sensor array implemented in three inclined monitoring boreholes and the near-by tunnel system. Three different fluid-injection protocols are tested: constant water injection, progressive cyclic injection, and cyclic injection with a hydraulic hammer operating at 5 Hz frequency to stimulate a crystalline rock volume of size 30 x 30 x 30 m at depth. We collected geological data from core and borehole logs, fracture inspection data from impression packer, acoustic emission hypocenter tracking and tilt data, as well as quantified the permeability enhancement process. The data and interpretation provided through this publication is an important step both, in upscaling laboratory tests, and downscaling field tests in granitic rock in the framework of enhanced geothermal system research.

The Taiwan Milun fault zone located at the boundary between the Eurasian and Philippine Sea plates. This fault slips frequently and produced large earthquakes, as for example the Mw6.4 Hualien earthquake (6 February 2018). We map and observe the fault zone and its behavior at depth by high spatial resolution dynamic strain sensing with optical fiber. In 2021-2022, we drilled and cored the fault, and deployed a 3D multi-cross-fault fiber array comprising a borehole loop with a depth of 700 m (Hole-A, Hanging wall site, crossing the fault at depth), a surface array crossing the fault rupture zone using commercial fiber, and a second borehole loop of 500m fiber (Hole-B, Footwall site). The high spatial resolution from distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) and the retrieved core combined with geophysical logs allow us to characterize the structure on meter-scale. Within the Milun fault zone, we identified a 20-m wide fault core comprised of gray and black gouge in the core sample. DAS strain-rate records associated with the same depth as the fault core show a distinct amplification. The amplification ratio of 2.5-3 is constant as for all types of events (local, teleseismic ), when compared to DAS channels at larger depth, related to a consolidated rock material. Although the fault gouge is narrow, the nature of the amplification in strain is due to its strong material contrast from fault gouge. This result may shed the light on the understanding of fault-zone dynamics in terms of remote earthquake triggering and near-fault ground motion., The 28th IUGG General Assembly (IUGG2023) (Berlin 2023)

Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) is used to record high-spatial resolution strain-rate data. For ground motion observation, the DAS data can be converted from strain rate to acceleration or velocity by array-based measurements with coherent plane waves. DAS provides an opportunity to map high-resolution shaking patterns near faults. We installed collocated geophones and optical fiber in Hualien City (a very seismically active area in Taiwan) from the end of January to the end of February in 2022. Earthquakes with magnitudes (Mw) between 3.2 and 5.4 have been recorded. These records illustrate the typical magnitude-distance dependence of ground-motion but also show saturation for higher magnitudes and/or at shorter distances (e.g for an earthquake of Mw 5.2 earthquake recorded at 100 km). For frequency-based analyses, clipped signals on DAS result in challenges not present in classical instruments (seismometers). The upper limit in dynamic range of seismometers results in easily identifiable trapezoidal signals. The dynamic range of DAS interrogators is limited by gauge length, sampling frequency, and wrapped phase in the interferometric phase demodulation. We observe that clipped DAS signals not only affect time series but also contaminate their spectra on all frequencies, due to the random nature of clipping in DAS—contrasting to the flat plateaus in clipped time series on seismometers. Therefore, the identification of the start and end points of clipped DAS records poses a major challenge, which we aim to resolve with a neural network. Population grids, especially in rural areas, are vulnerable to the effects of statistic disclosure control methods. The paper proposes a way to map those effects and create awareness for users involved in the creation of those data sets. To achieve this, the difference between unaffected and protected grid cells is calculated and is being visualized. The effects of spatial aggregation and level of attribute details are being compared.

Bei der primären Koronarintervention bei Patienten mit einem akuten Myokardinfarkt mit ST-Streckenhebungen ist das übergeordnete Ziel eine zeitnahe Reperfusion des betroffenen Myokards. Um die Zeit vom Beginn der Ischämie bis zur Reperfusion zu minimieren, sind in der Vergangenheit zahlreiche Studien durchgeführt und Maßnahmen in der klinischen Praxis umgesetzt worden. Diese zielten vor allem auf den Zeitraum bis zum Beginn der Herzkatheteruntersuchung. In Bezug auf die technische Durchführung der pPCI gibt es nur wenige Untersuchungen. Durch mehrere randomisierte Studien konnte der radiale gegenüber dem femoralen Zugangsweg als prognostisch günstiger erkannt und daher seitdem in den Leitlinien empfohlen werden. Darüber hinaus existieren nur wenige Daten und Empfehlungen zum Ablauf der pPCI. So ist nicht festgelegt, ob zuerst eine vollständige Koronarangiographie erfolgen oder direkt die anhand des EKG vermutete Infarktarterie aufgesucht und die Intervention vor Darstellung der kontralateralen Koronararterie durchgeführt werden sollte. Beide Verfahren haben sich in Studien als machbar und sicher erwiesen. Eine große randomisierte Studie fehlt bisher, sodass es keine eindeutige Evidenz oder Empfehlung für eine der beiden Vorgehensweisen gibt. In der vorliegenden Arbeit soll daher ein Beitrag zum Vergleich der Alternativen geleistet werden. Es wurde eine retrospektive Analyse der Daten von 101 pPCI bei Patienten mit akutem STEMI durchgeführt. Dabei wurden Ausschlusskriterien gewählt, die eine homogene Gruppe mit unkompliziertem Ablauf der Untersuchung für eine bessere Vergleichbarkeit trotz der geringen Gruppengröße gewährleisten sollten. Es befanden sich 56 Patienten in der Interventionsgruppe. Bei diesen ist die pPCI mit einem einzelnen, bilateral verwendbaren Führungskatheter durchgeführt und eine Strategie mit unmittelbarer Wiedereröffnung der Infarktarterie und erst anschließender kontralateraler Angiographie gewählt worden. Demgegenüber wurden 45 Patienten eingeschlossen, bei denen zunächst eine komplette Angiographie mit einem oder mehreren Diagnostikkathetern erfolgte und erst danach die Infarktläsion über einen speziellen links- oder rechtskoronaren Führungskatheter mit PCI behandelt wurde. Die zugrunde liegende Hypothese besagt, dass sich durch die Verwendung eines einzelnen, bilateral verwendbaren Führungskatheters und sofortige PCI der anhand des EKG identifizierten Infarktläsion die Untersuchungszeit verkürzen und der Kontrastmittelverbrauch, das Risiko für ein akutes Nierenversagen und die Strahlenbelastung des Patienten verringern lassen. Dies wären Argumente für die Befürwortung des hier untersuchten Vorgehens, obgleich Fragen nach der Sicherheit und dem mittel- bis langfristigen prognostischen Ergebnis aufgrund des Designs der Studie nicht beantwortet werden können. Für die statistische Analyse wurden t-Tests bei normalverteilten Parametern und nicht parametrische Tests (Mann-Whitney-U Test) bei nicht-normalverteilten Variablen verwendet. Kategoriale Variablen wurden mit Chi-Quadrat-Tests untersucht. Im Ergebnis konnte die Hypothese nur teilweise bestätigt werden. In den untersuchten Gruppen konnte im Mittel eine Verkürzung der Untersuchungsdauer um 5,8 Minuten errechnet werden, statistisch war dies aber, am ehesten wegen der recht großen Varianz bei geringer Gruppengröße, nicht signifikant. Der Verbrauch an Kontrastmittel stellte sich in beiden Gruppen identisch dar. Im Verlauf der Kreatininwerte und Anzahl der Nierenversagen war wiederum ein geringer numerischer Vorteil ohne statistische Signifikanz in der Interventionsgruppe zu finden. Bei der Strahlenbelastung fand sich ein deutlicher und auch statistisch signifikanter Vorteil in der Interventionsgruppe. Daneben war, wie erwartet, die Anzahl der verwendeten Katheter in der Untersuchungsgruppe statistisch signifikant geringer. Zusammenfassend lässt sich festhalten, dass die Erwartungen bezüglich Einsparung von Kontrastmittel und Verringerung des Risikos von akutem Nierenversagen nicht bestätigt wurden. Die Rate an Nierenversagen war in beiden Gruppen jedoch sehr gering, was zum Teil an den gewählten Ausschlusskriterien lag, da hierdurch eine Population mit vergleichsweise geringem Risiko für Akutes Nierenversagen untersucht wurden. Eine Anwendung des untersuchten Vorgehens bei Patienten mit hohem Risiko (vorbestehende höhergradige Niereninsuffizienz, kardiogener Schock vor Beginn der Katheteruntersuchung etc.) könnte daher dennoch von Vorteil sein und sollte in Zukunft weiter untersucht werden. In Bezug auf die Strahlenbelastung des Patienten zeigte sich ein signifikanter Vorteil. Dies ist insbesondere vor dem Hintergrund interessant, dass ein Nachteil des radialen Zugangswegs gegenüber dem femoralen Zugang eine höhere Strahlenbelastung des 35 Untersuchers und des Patienten zu sein scheint. Hier könnte eine Möglichkeit liegen, diesen Nachteil zu verringern. Zur abschließenden Klärung der Frage, welches Vorgehen bei der pPCI das Beste ist sind weitere, größere und randomisierte Studien notwendig.

Accelerograms are the primary source for characterizing strong ground motion. It is therefore of paramount interest to have high-quality recordings free from any nonphysical contamination. Frequently, accelerograms are affected by baseline jumps and drifts, either related to the instrument and/or a major earthquake. In this work, I propose a correction method for these undesired baseline drifts based on segmented linear least squares. The algorithm operates on the integrated waveforms and combines all three instrument components to estimate a model that modifies the baseline to be at zero continuously. The procedure consists of two steps: first a suite of models with variable numbers of discontinuities is derived for all three instrument components. During this process, the number of discontinuities is reduced in a parsimonious way, for example, two very close discontinuities are merged into a single one. In the second step, the optimal model is selected on the basis of the Bayesian information criterion. I exemplify the application on synthetic waveforms with known discontinuities and on observed waveforms from a unified strong-motion database of the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) and the National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Prevention (NIED, Japan) networks for the major events of the 2016 Kumamoto earthquakes. After the baseline jump correction, the waveforms are furthermore corrected for displacement according to Wang et al.(2011). The resulting displacements are comparable to the Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar-derived displacement estimates for the Kumamoto earthquake sequence.

The propagation of a seismic rupture on a fault introduces spatial variations in the seismic wave field surrounding the fault. This directivity effect results in larger shaking amplitudes in the rupture propagation direction. Its seismic radiation pattern also causes amplitude variations between the strike-normal and strike-parallel components of horizontal ground motion. We investigated the landslide response to these effects during the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake (M-w 7.1) in central Kyushu (Japan). Although the distribution of some 1500 earthquake-triggered landslides as a function of rupture distance is consistent with the observed Arias intensity, the landslides were more concentrated to the northeast of the southwest-northeast striking rupture. We examined several landslide susceptibility factors: hillslope inclination, the median amplification factor (MAF) of ground shaking, lithology, land cover, and topographic wetness. None of these factors sufficiently explains the landslide distribution or orientation (aspect), although the landslide head scarps have an elevated hillslope inclination and MAF. We propose a new physics-based ground-motion model (GMM) that accounts for the seismic rupture effects, and we demonstrate that the low-frequency seismic radiation pattern is consistent with the overall landslide distribution. Its spatial pattern is influenced by the rupture directivity effect, whereas landslide aspect is influenced by amplitude variations between the fault-normal and fault-parallel motion at frequencies < 2 Hz. This azimuth dependence implies that comparable landslide concentrations can occur at different distances from the rupture. This quantitative link between the prevalent landslide aspect and the low-frequency seismic radiation pattern can improve coseismic landslide hazard assessment.

Diese Arbeit stellt die Ergebnisse der stratigraphischen und tektonischen Aufnahme des Blattes 5827 Maßbach vor. Sie erfolgte im Rahmen der geologischen Landesaufnahme von Bayern 1:25.000 sowie im Auftrag des Bayerischen Landesamts für Umwelt und beruht auf einer geologischen Detailkartierung im Maßstab 1:10.000. Die wesentlichen Ergebnisse sind folglich in der Geologischen Karte 1:25.000 und in der Strukturkarte 1:50.000 dargestellt. Zur Aufgabenstellung gehörten ebenfalls eine moderne Erfassung und Darstellung der Schichtenfolge unter stratigraphischen und faziellen Gesichtspunkten sowie die Aufnahme und Interpretation geologischer Strukturen und deren Einbindung in den regionalen Rahmen (Anlage 7). Dieser Arbeit kommt somit nicht nur akademisches Interesse zu. Vielmehr ist sie auch für angewandte Fachbereiche wesentlich: u.a. für Hydrogeologie, Geothermie oder für Fragen der Raumplanung. Das Kartenblatt 5827 Maßbach liegt im nordöstlichen Unterfranken im Norden Bayerns. Die nächstgrößere Stadt, südlich des Blattgebietes, ist Schweinfurt. Das Gebiet zeigt einen Ausschnitt des südwestdeutschen Schichtstufenlandes innerhalb der Südwestdeutschen Großscholle sensu CARLÉ (1955). Geomorphologen rechnen es der Hochfläche der „Schweinfurter Rhön“ zu. Ein naturräumlicher Überblick über Geographie, Geologie, Hydrogeologie, Rohstoffgeologie und Bodenkunde sowie ein erdgeschichtlicher Abriss werden im ersten Teil der Arbeit (S. 2–15) gegeben. Die Kartierung erfolgte als Lesesteinkartierung; denn die Aufschlussverhältnisse waren schlecht. Auch existieren nur wenige auswertbare Bohrungen. Vor diesem Hintergrund stellt der zweite Teil der Arbeit die zu Tage ausstreichende mesozoische Schichtenfolge vor (S.16–76). Die Schichtenfolge gehört ausschließlich in die Trias, reicht vom Unteren Muschelkalk bis zum Unteren Gipskeuper und umfasst etwa 270 bis 280 Meter. Hinzu kommen verschiedene quartäre Sedimente geringer Mächtigkeit. Der dritte Teil der Arbeit (S. 77–95) befasst sich mit den Lagerungsverhältnissen und der tektonischen Zergliederung des Gebietes. Das tektonische Relief auf Blatt 5827 Maßbach misst etwa 260–270 m. Prägendes Element ist der Kissingen–Haßfurter Sattel, dessen Sattelachse das Blattgebiet von NW nach SE quert. Im SW–Quadranten ist die in Südwestdeutschland bedeutsame Kissingen–Haßfurter–Störungszone wirksam Im regionalen Rahmen verbinden sich eine Vielzahl von nachgewiesenen tektonischen Elementen zu sich überlagernden tektonischen Strukturen. Deren Ausgestaltung verlief mehrphasig und sie erhielten ihre heute bestehende Form wohl durch die Fernwirkung der alpidischen Orogenese. Die Anlage der tektonischen Hauptelemente hingegen reicht wahrscheinlich bis in die ausgehende variszidische Gebirgsbildung zurück. Die zusammen-fassende Analyse und Darstellung der Ergebnisse führt in dieser Arbeit zur Einarbeitung des Blattes 5827 Maßbach in den regionalen stratigraphischen wie tektonischen Rahmen der umliegenden Blätter der GK 25., The present thesis deals with the geological mapping of Sheet 5827 Maßbach in north-western Bavaria (Fig.1), north of the city of Schweinfurt. Fieldwork was done on the scale of 1:10.000, but the results are presented on the official scale of 1:25.000. This method is applied for both the 1:25.000 geological map and the 1:50.000 tectonic map. The project was inaugurated by the “Bayerisches Landesamt für Umwelt (LfU)”, an authority preceded by the State Geological Survey of Bavaria, in order to complete the country’s map series. The results of this thesis are not only of academic interest but are also definitely needed for applied purposes, e.g. hydrogeology, geothermics, the quarrying and mining industries, waste disposal management and land-use planning. The area of sheet Maßbach is characterized by a cuesta landscape scarped into Mesozoic strata of exclusively Triassic age. Structurally speaking it is situated near the northern tip of the so-called “Süddeutsches Dreieck” sensu CARLÉ (1955). In detail, geomorphologists attribute the landscape to the “Schweinfurter Rhön”. An overview in terms of geography, geology, hydrogeology, raw materials and soil science is presented with an outline of earth history and stratigraphy.

The mechanisms leading to large earthquakes are poorly understood and documented. Here we characterize the long‐term precursory phase of the 1 April 2014 Mw8.1 North Chile megathrust. We show that a group of coastal GPS stations accelerated westward 8 months before the main shock, corresponding to a Mw6.5 slow slip event on the subduction interface, 80% of which was aseismic. Concurrent interface foreshocks underwent a diminution of their radiation at high frequency, as shown by the temporal evolution of Fourier spectra and residuals with respect to ground motions predicted by recent subduction models. Such ground motions change suggests that in response to the slow sliding of the subduction interface, seismic ruptures are progressively becoming smoother and/or slower. The gradual propagation of seismic ruptures beyond seismic asperities into surrounding metastable areas could explain these observations and might be the precursory mechanism eventually leading to the main shock.
