Pure tone audiometry (PTA) is considered the standard method of hearing assessment. However, technical and logistical challenges preclude its usage for hearing screening at primary healthcare facilities. Free field hearing (FFH) tests such as conversation voice (CV) and whispered voice (WV) tests have been used for hearing assessment. However, their correlation to PTA and accuracy in detection of hearing loss are doubtful. This study aims to determine if FFH tests can be used for estimation of hearing thresholds. A retrospective analytical study was conducted at the otorhinolaryngology department. Spearman's correlation coefficient (ρ) was determined between FFH recognition distance and average air conduction PTA thresholds. A statistical regression model was developed to estimate hearing thresholds from the FFH recognition distance. The FFH tests were studied for their accuracy in detection of hearing loss. The audiometric records of 437 persons (874 ears) were analysed. The CV and WV tests were found to have a high correlation (ρ = −0.757 and −0.758, respectively) with average PTA thresholds in persons with hearing loss. The WV test was found to have a 94.7% sensitivity, 90.8% specificity, 97.6% positive predictive value, 80.9% negative predictive value, and 93.9% accuracy in detection of hearing loss. FFH tests such as WV test can be used to estimate the hearing thresholds and screen for hearing loss when audiometric tests are not logistically feasible, such as at primary-level healthcare facilities, remote locations, and in schools. Introduction Ménière disease (MD) affects the inner ear, comprising the cochlea and semicircular canals. Symptoms include severe incapacitating vertigo, nausea, vomit, aural fullness, and sensorineural hearing loss – in which speech discrimination and intelligibility are impaired and can be quantified with speech audiometry. Objective To investigate the influence of the stimuli presentation level in speech audiometry and the quality of life in adults with and without a diagnosis of MD. Method Two groups were formed with nine individuals each – one with and the other without MD. The Speech Recognition Percentage Index was researched with stimuli presented above the self-reported comfort level or 5 dB below the discomfort level. Dizziness Handicap and Tinnitus Handicap Inventories were administered to individuals with tinnitus and vertigo complaints. Results Speech recognition was better in the study group with higher presentation levels, as 75% of the sample improved their performance. The presence of vertigo significantly impacted the quality of life of individuals in the study group. Conclusion Speech recognition improves with higher presentation levels. Background: If sufficient speech discrimination is no longer achieved with conventional hearing systems, an audiological indication for a cochlear implant (CI) is given. However, there are no established target criteria for CI aftercare with regard to the level of speech comprehension to be achieved. The aim of this study is to validate an existing predictive model for speech comprehension after CI provision. This is applied to different patient groups. Materials and methods: The prospective study included 124 postlingually deaf adults. The model is based on preoperative maximum monosyllabic recognition score, aided monosyllabic recognition score at 65 dBSPL, and age the time of implantation. The model was investigated with regard to prediction accuracy for monosyllabic recognition with CI after 6 months. Results: Mean speech discrimination improved from 10% with hearing aid to 65% with CI after 6 months, with a statistically significant improvement in 93% of cases. Deterioration of aided unilateral speech discrimination was not observed. The mean prediction error was 11.5 percentage points in the cases with preoperative scores better than zero and 23.2 percentage points in all other cases. Conclusion: Cochlear implantation should also be considered in patients with moderately severe to severe hearing loss and insufficient speech discrimination with hearing aids. The model based on preoperatively measured data for predicting speech discrimination with CI can be used in preoperative consultation and in the context of postoperative quality assurance. Background and Aim: Word Recognition Test (WRT) is a widely used component of routine audiology battery. Several studies were conducted on the effect of words in word recognition lists and whether word difficulty level had an effect in word recalling process of patients. This study aims to compare the scores of patients to the designed Başkent WRT and commonly used Hacettepe WRT by focusing on the lexical neighbourhood. Methods: Study carried out in an Ear Nose and Throat Department of a private university hospital between June and August 2021. 34 persons with sensorineural hearing loss and 34 persons without hearing loss was participated in the study. Designed WRT and widely used common WRT were presented to the participants. Results: Results showed that common WRT included words with more lexical neighbours and sensorineural hearing loss group scores were significantly lower compared to designed WRT. Conclusion: Persons with sensorineural hearing loss have a tendency to misunderstand presented words in WRT as they may trigger other words and misguide the patient. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives. This study aimed to compare speech intelligibility in noise with and without hearing protection devices (HPDs). Methods. Fifty-one workers were distributed into three groups: noise-induced hearing loss group (NIHLG), normally hearing noise-exposed group (NG) and normally hearing non-exposed to noise group (CG). A free field system was used to emit monosyllables (65, 70 and 75 dB) and pink noise in different signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) (0, −5, −10 and −15). Results. In situations with HPDs, all groups showed a decrease in the percentage of correct responses with an increase in noise level. The HPD had little effect on speech intelligibility in the NIHLG and NG. Considering the effect caused by the HPD on speech intelligibility, it was observed that the group with the greatest loss was the CG for SNRs of −5, −10 and −15. Conclusion. Although speech intelligibility is influenced by the hearing threshold, the noise level and SNR are crucial for good speech intelligibility, either with or without an HPD. It is highlighted that the NG had worse results when compared with the CG, which may indicate changes in the auditory pathway resulting from continuous noise exposure, even in the absence of changes in the audiometric thresholds. AimsThis study investigates the perception and production of the Galician mid vowel contrasts by 54 early Spanish-Galician bilinguals in the cities of Vigo and Santiago (Galicia, Spain). Empirical data is provided to examine the role of language dominance in the perception and production of Galician mid vowel contrasts in order to determine whether the Galician vowel system is becoming more Spanish-like as a result of extensive contact with Spanish in urban areas.MethodsPerception and production data for each mid vowel contrast were collected in (1) binary forced-choice identification tasks, (2) AX discrimination tasks and (3) a reading-aloud task.ResultsResults from binary forced-choice identification and AX discrimination tasks indicate that Spanish-dominant bilinguals have great difficulty in discriminating between these mid vowels while Galician-dominant subjects display a robust categorical identification of the two mid vowel categories. Acoustic analyses of their productions show that Galician-dominant bilinguals implement a Galician-specific /e/-/x025B;/ contrast but Spanish-dominant ones produce a single, merged Spanish-like front mid vowel. However, both language dominance groups seem to maintain a more robust /o/-/x0254;/ contrast. This asymmetry between front and back mid vowels is found in the productions of both language dominance groups.ConclusionThese results show that language dominance is a strong predictor of the production and perception abilities of Spanish-Galician bilinguals, and that only Galician-dominant subjects in these urban areas possess two independent phonetic categories in the front and back mid vowel space.

Objective: The acoustic change complex (ACC) is a cortical auditory evoked potential (CAEP) and can be elicited by a change in an otherwise continuous sound. The ACC has been highlighted as a promising tool in the assessment of sound and speech discrimination capacity, and particularly for difficult-to-test populations such as infants with hearing loss, due to the objective nature of ACC measurements. Indeed, there is a pressing need to develop further means to accurately and thoroughly establish the hearing status of children with hearing loss, to help guide hearing interventions in a timely manner. Despite the potential of the ACC method, ACC measurements remain relatively rare in a standard clinical settings. The objective of this study was to perform an up-to-date systematic review on ACC measurements in children, to provide greater clarity and consensus on the possible methodologies, applications, and performance of this technique, and to facilitate its uptake in relevant clinical settings., Design: Original peer-reviewed articles conducting ACC measurements in children (< 18 years). Data were extracted and summarised for: (1) participant characteristics; (2) ACC methods and auditory stimuli; (3) information related to the performance of the ACC technique; (4) ACC measurement outcomes, advantages, and challenges. The systematic review was conducted using PRISMA guidelines for reporting and the methodological quality of included articles was assessed., Results: A total of 28 studies were identified (9 infant studies). Review results show that ACC responses can be measured in infants (from < 3 months), and there is evidence of age-dependency, including increased robustness of the ACC response with increasing childhood age. Clinical applications include the measurement of the neural capacity for speech and non-speech sound discrimination in children with hearing loss, auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder (ANSD) and central auditory processing disorder (CAPD). Additionally, ACCs can be recorded in children with hearing aids, auditory brainstem implants, and cochlear implants, and ACC results may guide hearing intervention/rehabilitation strategies. The review identified that the time taken to perform ACC measurements was often lengthy; the development of more efficient ACC test procedures for children would be beneficial. Comparisons between objective ACC measurements and behavioural measures of sound discrimination showed significant correlations for some, but not all, included studies., Conclusions: ACC measurements of the neural capacity to discriminate between speech and non-speech sounds are feasible in infants and children, and a wide range of possible clinical applications exist, although more time-efficient procedures would be advantageous for clinical uptake. Background: Considering the different calibration and masking of the noise, the adaptive Freiburg monosyllabic speech test in noise (aFBE-S) and the Oldenburg sentence test in noise (OLSA-S) were shown to be comparable with respect to the accuracy of both tests in a previous study. However, the time requirement of the aFBE-S was significantly greater than that of the OLSA-S due to the adaptive measurement method. The purpose of this study is to theoretically determine whether the aFBE-S can be used with fewer test lists, given the low scatter of results, and to compare the results with those of the OLSA-S., Methods: Using the results of 40 otologically healthy subjects who had already been tested in randomized order with the OLSA-S and aFBE-S, the mean difference of the 95 % confidence interval (95 % CI) of the signal-to-noise ratio for 50% speech understanding (S/N50) of the aFBE-S was calculated for three, four, and five test lists instead of 7.5. In addition, the time required for the reduced number of test lists was determined and the results were examined in comparison with those of the OLSA-S., Results: In each case, no significant difference between the difference mean of the 95 %-CI of the S/N50 of the original aFBE-S, the aFBE-S shortened to 3, 4, or 5 test lists and the OLSA-S could be found. The time required for the aFBE-S with a reduced number of test lists was significantly less than for the OLSA-S in each case., Conclusion: The aFBE-S is not inferior with a reduced number of test lists in comparison to the OLSA-S. ABSTRACT Purpose: to investigate the auditory recognition of intermittent speech in relation to different modulation rates and ages. Methods: 20 young people, 20 middle-aged adults, and 16 older adults, all of them with auditory thresholds equal to or lower than 25 dB HL up to the frequency of 4000 Hz. The participants were submitted to intermittent speech recognition tests presented in three modulation conditions: 4 Hz, 10 Hz, and 64 Hz. The percentages of correct answers were compared between age groups and modulation rates. ANOVA and post hoc tests were conducted to investigate the modulation rate effect, and the mixed linear regression model (p < 0.001). Results: regarding the age effect, the data showed a significant difference between young people and older adults, and between middle-aged and older adults. As for the modulation rate effect, the indexes of correct answers were significantly lower at the slower rate (4 Hz) in the three age groups. Conclusion: an age effect was verified on intermittent speech recognition: older adults have greater difficulty. A modulation rate effect was also noticed in the three age groups: the higher the rate, the better the performance.

Abstract Introduction Speech tests such as logoaudiometry measure the ability to perceive and recognize oral sounds. The Speech Recognition Index (SRI) is one of the speech tests adopted in clinical routine; it uses standardized live voice and recorded speeches. The live voice speech method can be influenced by intra and interspeaker variability, as well as by regionalism variability, whereas recorded tests show consistency in their presentation. Objective Analyzing results of the SRI test applied to live voice and recorded speeches from Paraná State, in different Brazilian counties. Method The sample comprised 125 individuals, 25 from each county (Rio de Janeiro, Florianópolis, Porto Alegre, Salvador and Curitiba), from both sexes, in the age group 20 to 70 years; the SRI was applied in both techniques. Results The recorded speech method showed prevalence of hit improvement in Rio de Janeiro (40%), Salvador, Porto Alegre and Florianópolis (28%). Individuals from Salvador and Florianópolis subjected to the recorded speech method showed better results in the left ear. Individuals from Rio de Janeiro and Porto Alegre showed satisfactory results in both ears, whereas those from Curitiba did not show statistically significant difference between the left and the right ear. Conclusion The recorded CD application method showed prevalence of hit improvement (%) in the SRI responses in comparison to the live voice speech technique in most of the studied counties. According to the hit rate measured in the herein investigated counties, Rio de Janeiro showed the best results in the recorded speech method.

Background People with mild hearing loss at age 50 are twice as likely to develop dementia increasing to a five times greater risk for those with severe hearing loss. The prevalence of dementia and hearing impairment increase with age. Intact hearing enables cognition, facilitates social interaction and enhances communication. Hearing loss, social isolation and dementia are commonly interwoven. We recently commenced routine audiology screening in our memory service. Methods Consecutive patients with mild cognitive impairment attending a tertiary memory assessment and support service were referred for full audiology screening. People were routinely referred on basis of cognitive diagnosis, and not on the basis of perceived hearing loss. Assessment included ENT history, otoscopy, tympanometry, pure tone audiometry and speech audiometry to determine the presence, type and amount of any hearing loss present. This included speech discrimination testing – a functional test to determine processing of 10 phonetically balanced words with 100% being an optimal response. Results 20 people (12 women), mean age 72.3 (range 57-87) were assessed. The majority had amnestic MCI 18/20 (90%). 9/20 (45%) patients subjectively complained of hearing loss. 7/20 (35%) had history of occupational noise exposure. 12/20 (60%) had occlusion due to ear wax. Hearing loss identified: Mild 8/20 (40%); Moderate to severe 7/20 (35%); with Normal  hearing in 5/20 (25%). High frequency hearing loss was noted in 19/20 (95%). Speech discrimination score was impaired in those with hearing loss: mean 89.4% (range 66-100). 6/20 (30%) received referral for hearing aids. Conclusion This study highlights the importance of incorporating an assessment of auditory acuity as part of memory assessment and post-diagnostic care-pathway for people with mild cognitive complaints given the established impact hearing loss has on the future risk for cognitive decline. Objective: This study investigated the speech perception of cochlear implant (CI) recipients with measurable preoperative ipsilateral speech perception. These data should support improved individual counselling of CI candidates. Materials and methods: Pre- and postoperative speech audiometric parameters were analyzed, including maximum score for phonemically balanced words (PBmax) and monosyllabic score at a normal conversational level of 65 dBSPL, with hearing aids one hand and CI on the other. Data of 284 experienced adult CI wearers were grouped and evaluated in terms of preoperative PBmax. Results: The preoperative PBmax was exceeded by the postoperative monosyllabic score in 96% of cases. The overall median postoperative score was 72.5%. The groups with preoperative PBmax > 0% showed significantly better speech perception scores with CI than the group with PBmax = 0%. Median improvement compared to the preoperative monosyllabic score with hearing aids was 65 percentage points, independent of preoperative PBmax. Conclusion: The preoperatively measured PBmax may be used as a predictor for the minimum speech perception obtained with CI. ObjectivesAuditory neuropathy is a recently described disorder in which patients demonstrate hearing loss for pure tones, impaired word discrimination out of proportion to pure tone loss, absent or abnormal auditory brainstem responses, and normal outer hair cell function as measured by otoacoustic emissions and cochlear microphonics. We have identified eight pediatric patients having hearing deficits that are most likely due to a neuropathy of the eighth nerve. In this study, the results of audiologic testing performed with these eight children are described.Study designRetrospective review of audiologic findings in eight children with auditory neuropathy.MethodsEach subject was tested with pure tone and speech audiologic testing, auditory brainstem response, and click-evoked otoacoustic emissions. Results of these tests were tabulated and summarized.ResultsPure tone audiologic testing revealed five children with upsloping sensorineural hearing loss, two with high frequency loss, and one with a mild, flat configuration. Six children demonstrated poor word discrimination scores, and the other two had fair to good word discrimination. All eight subjects had normal distortion product and transient otoacoustic emissions. All eight children demonstrated absent or marked abnormalities of brainstem auditory evoked potentials. These findings suggest that while cochlear outer hair cell function is normal, the lesion is located at the eighth nerve.ConclusionsRecent advances in otoacoustic emissions testing permit differentiation of neural deafness from sensory deafness. This paper describes the clinical presentation and audiologic findings in pediatric auditory neuropathy, as well as the recommended management of these patients. Otolaryngologists should be aware of this disorder and implications for its management, which differs from treatment of sensorineural hearing loss.

RESUMO Objetivo Avaliar a influência das variáveis idade, escolaridade e gênero na ocorrência de pausas após o tempo padrão no teste de identificação de sentenças dicóticas. Método A amostra foi constituída por 200 indivíduos destros distribuídos em quatro grupos segundo a faixa etária: grupo I - 13 a 19 anos de idade, grupo II - 20 a 29 anos de idade, grupo III - 30 a 39 anos de idade e o grupo IV - 40 a 49 anos de idade. Cada grupo continha 50 sujeitos (25 homens e 25 mulheres) pareados por escolaridade. Foram adotados os seguintes critérios de elegibilidade: língua materna português brasileiro, normouvinte, leitura fluente independentemente do grau de escolaridade. O teste de identificação de sentenças dicóticas foi aplicado nas etapas de integração binaural e escuta direcionada e a necessidade de pausas no teste após o tempo padrão foi anotada. Foram realizadas estatísticas descritivas e inferenciais. Resultados Para as etapas de integração binaural, houve associação positiva entre idade e ocorrência de pausas. A variável escolaridade apresentou associação negativa com a ocorrência de pausas em todas as etapas do teste. A variável gênero não apresentou nenhuma associação com a ocorrência de pausa em nenhuma das etapas do teste. Conclusão Com o aumento da idade, há um aumento na incidência de pausas na etapa de integração binaural do teste. Quanto mais anos de estudo menor a chance de o indivíduo necessitar de pausas para realizar o teste em todas as etapas de apresentação. A variável gênero não influenciou na ocorrência de pausas.

OBJECTIVE: The audibility thresholds for the sound frequency of 137 upward- and downward-sloping audiograms showing sensorineural hearing loss were selected and analyzed in conjunction with speech recognition thresholds obtained from individuals seen at a public otolaryngology clinic to determine which frequencies in slope audiograms best represent speech recognition thresholds. METHOD: The linear regression model and mean square error were used to determine the associations between the threshold values. RESULT: The mean square error identified larger errors when using thresholds of 500, 1000, and 2000 Hz than when using audibility thresholds of 500, 1000, 2000, and 4000 Hz. The linear regression model showed a higher correlation (91%) between the audiogram thresholds for frequencies of 500, 1000, 2000, and 4000 Hz than for the frequencies of 500, 1000, and 2000 Hz (88%). CONCLUSION: Frequencies of 500, 1000, 2000, and 4000 Hz were the most significant in predicting the speech recognition threshold.

RESUMO Objetivo Desenvolver um teste para avaliar a compressão de frequências por meio da identificação de fonemas fricativos e aplicá-lo. Métodos Organizou-se um material de fala composto por 24 palavras monossilábicas, contendo os fonemas /s, z, f, v, ∫, 3/. As palavras foram gravadas por oito sujeitos, totalizando uma amostra de 192 gravações. Aplicaram-se filtros passa-baixas nas palavras com frequências de cortes em 1,5 kHz; 2 kHz e 3 kHz, a fim de impedir a detecção sonora nas faixas de frequências filtradas, simulando perdas auditivas em frequências altas. Aplicou-se o teste em dez indivíduos normo-ouvintes, que deveriam ouvir a palavra e identificá-la na tela de um computador. Foram oferecidas 12 opções de resposta, fixando a vogal e variando o fonema fricativo inicial e a presença da fricativa final /s/. O teste foi composto por 384 repetições de palavras, sendo 192 com compressão de frequências. As respostas foram computadas e comparadas por meio de testes estatísticos. Resultados A identificação dos fonemas foi favorecida pelo aumento da frequência de corte, exceto em 3 kHz. Houve melhora na identificação dos fonemas fricativos /∫, 3/ com o uso da compressão de frequências, porém, para os demais fonemas avaliados (/f, v/ e /s, z/) não houve diferenças. Conclusão O teste de identificação de fonemas fricativos se mostrou eficiente e confiável. Para as frequências de corte em 1,5 kHz e 2 kHz, a compressão de frequências foi eficaz para a identificação dos fonemas fricativos /∫, 3/, porém, a identificação do /s/ final mostrou-se comprometida pelo algoritmo.

RESUMO Objetivo Desenvolver o teste Listas de Sentenças Dicóticas em Português Brasileiro, verificar sua aplicabilidade e propor um protocolo de aplicação para avaliação do processamento auditivo. Métodos As listas de frases foram extraídas do material original, submetidas a uma análise criteriosa e ao processo de adaptação, para compor o novo teste. Para formar pares de frases com duração mais aproximada possível, foi analisado estatisticamente o tempo de duração de cada sentença, dentro de uma mesma lista e entre listas. Estas foram combinadas em ordem crescente de duração, dentro de cada lista, e realizadas as combinações das listas entre si, de acordo com a duração das sentenças, gerando 42 conjuntos distintos de listas. Em seguida, o teste foi aplicado em 42 indivíduos normo-ouvintes. Os indivíduos foram instruídos sobre a forma de resposta, devendo repetir, inicialmente, as sentenças de ambas as orelhas (atenção dividida entre orelha direita e esquerda), em seguida, as frases da orelha direita (atenção direcionada para a orelha direita) e, finalmente, as da orelha esquerda (atenção direcionada para a orelha esquerda). Resultados O novo material ficou composto da seguinte forma: faixa 1, tom puro de calibração; faixa 2, lista 1A modificada e faixas 3 a 44, as 42 possibilidades de combinação entre as listas. Após a realização do teste, foi sugerido um protocolo de aplicação. Conclusão O teste Listas de Sentenças Dicóticas em Português Brasileiro mostrou-se um instrumento passível de ser utilizado em adultos e, sendo assim, foi proposto um protocolo com duas diferentes combinações de listas e sequências de apresentação, para avaliação do processamento auditivo.

RESUMO Objetivo Avaliar o reconhecimento de fala, considerando a previsibilidade da palavra a partir de um teste elaborado. Métodos Foi realizada anamnese, testes de rastreio de comprometimento cognitivo e depressão e avaliação audiológica convencional. Foi desenvolvido um Teste de Reconhecimento de Fala utilizando Frases de Previsibilidade Alta e Baixa e aplicado a 36 idosos (G1 e G3 - grupos sem perda auditiva até 4 kHz e G2 e G4 - grupos com perda auditiva neurossensorial de grau leve a moderado). Dois grupos realizaram o teste no silêncio e com ruído (relação sinal/ruído +5 dB) e os outros dois grupos somente com ruído (relações +5 dB e 0 dB). Resultados O teste de reconhecimento de fala revelou, de modo geral, maior pontuação nas frases de previsibilidade alta e melhores desempenhos para os grupos sem perda auditiva. No silêncio, os idosos sem e com perda auditiva obtiveram pontuação máxima igual e as menores pontuações ocorreram na condição de ruído mais intenso. O benefício da previsibilidade foi positivo para os grupos 1, 2 e 3. O grupo 4 apresentou comportamento variado quanto ao uso da previsibilidade (ora positivo, ora negativo). Conclusão Com a população de idosos avaliados e as diferenças observadas em um dos grupos considerados, não foi possível compreender, com exatidão, como os idosos se beneficiam do apoio da previsibilidade. A perda auditiva e a presença do ruído influenciaram negativamente o desempenho no teste. Faz-se necessária a continuidade desta linha de pesquisa para determinar a validade do material elaborado.

As novas tecnologias do processador Freedom® foram criadas para proporcionar melhorias no processamento do som acústico de entrada, não apenas para novos usuários, como para gerações anteriores de implante coclear. OBJETIVO: Identificar a contribuição da tecnologia do processador de fala Freedom® para implante coclear multicanal, Nucleus22®, no desempenho de percepção de fala no silêncio e no ruído, e nos limiares audiométricos. MATERIAL E MÉTODO: A forma de estudo foi de coorte histórico com corte transversal. Dezessete pacientes preencheram os critérios de inclusão. Antes de iniciar os testes, o último mapa em uso com o Spectra® foi revisto e otimizado e o funcionamento do processador foi verificado. Os testes de fala foram apresentados a 60dBNPS em material gravado: monossílabos; frases em apresentação aberta no silêncio; e no ruído (SNR = 0dB). Foram realizadas audiometrias em campo livre com ambos os processadores de fala. A análise estatística utilizou testes não-paramétricos. RESULTADOS: Quando analisada a contribuição do Freedom® para pacientes com Nucleus22®, observa-se diferença estatisticamente significativa em todos os testes de percepção de fala e em todos os limiares audiométricos. CONCLUSÃO: A tecnologia contribuiu no desempenho de percepção de fala e nos limiares audiométricos dos pacientes usuários de Nucleus22®.New technology in the Freedom® speech processor for cochlear implants was developed to improve how incoming acoustic sound is processed; this applies not only for new users, but also for previous generations of cochlear implants. AIM: To identify the contribution of this technology - the Nucleus 22® - on speech perception tests in silence and in noise, and on audiometric thresholds. METHODS: A cross-sectional cohort study was undertaken. Seventeen patients were selected. The last map based on the Spectra® was revised and optimized before starting the tests. Troubleshooting was used to identify malfunction. To identify the contribution of the Freedom® technology for the Nucleus22®, auditory thresholds and speech perception tests were performed in free field in sound-proof booths. Recorded monosyllables and sentences in silence and in noise (SNR = 0dB) were presented at 60 dBSPL. The nonparametric Wilcoxon test for paired data was used to compare groups. RESULTS: Freedom® applied for the Nucleus22® showed a statistically significant difference in all speech perception tests and audiometric thresholds. CONCLUSION: The reedom® technology improved the performance of speech perception and audiometric thresholds of patients with Nucleus 22®.

OBJETIVO: determinar as relações sinal/ruído nas quais são obtidos os limiares de reconhecimento de sentenças no ruído (LRSR), em campo livre, para indivíduos com audição normal e para indivíduos com perda auditiva neurossensorial e comparar os resultados dos dois grupos pesquisados. MÉTODO: participaram do estudo 62 indivíduos adultos com idades entre 18 e 64 anos, sendo 32 normo-ouvintes e 30 com perda de audição neurossensorial de grau leve a moderadamente severo, avaliados em cabina acusticamente tratada. Para a avaliação, as sentenças foram apresentadas em campo livre, na presença de um ruído competitivo, com uso do teste Lista de Sentenças em Português. RESULTADOS: os LRSR dos indivíduos foram obtidos na relação sinal ruído de -7,57 dB e para indivíduos com perda auditiva neurossensorial, em -2,10 dB. Ao comparar os resultados de ambos os grupos, a análise estatística apontou diferença estatisticamente significante entre os valores dos LRSR sendo pPURPOSE: to quantify the signal-to-noise ratios in which the sentence recognition in the noise (SRN) in the sound field can be obtained. The research aimed at subjects with normal hearing and subjects with sensorineural hearing loss and compared the results for both groups. METHOD: 62 subjects took part in the study, their age ranged from 18 to 64 years old, among these 32 had normal hearing and 30 had sensorineural hearing loss varying from mild to moderately severe degree. The exams were performed in an acoustical booth. The sentences were evaluated in the presence of a competitive noise, making use of the Sentences List in Portuguese. OBJETIVO: avaliar o desempenho e a satisfação com o uso das próteses auditivas nos pacientes atendidos no convênio APAC-UFSM, após um ano de adaptação. MÉTODOS: analisou-se 49 sujeitos, com perda auditiva do tipo neurossensorial ou mista, de grau leve a severo na melhor orelha, divididos em adultos e idosos. Realizou-se a pesquisa dos Limiares e Índices Percentuais de Reconhecimento de Sentenças no Silêncio e no Ruído, em campo livre, por meio do teste Listas de Sentenças em Português; e aplicou-se o questionário de satisfação, International Outcome Inventory for Hearing Aids. Realizaram-se os testes na mesma sessão, em dois momentos distintos, sendo o primeiro, sem o uso das próteses auditivas e o segundo, usando as mesmas. RESULTADOS: houve diferença significante no desempenho dos indivíduos em ambos os grupos, no procedimento realizado no silêncio. Apesar de o desempenho com próteses auditivas não ter apresentado melhora significante no ruído, os pacientes apresentaram respostas satisfatórias no questionário. Na comparação entre os grupos, não se observou diferença significante quanto ao desempenho e satisfação. CONCLUSÃO: a melhora significante do desempenho no silêncio vai ao encontro do relato dos pacientes. O questionário evidenciou que a maioria referiu fazer uso efetivo das próteses auditivas e considerou ter um benefício muito satisfatório. Apesar de uma parcela significativa referir moderada ou bastante dificuldade residual, a maioria considerou que o uso das próteses auditivas vale muito ou bastante a pena.PURPOSE: to assess the performance and satisfaction using hearing aids in patients assisted in the APAC-UFSM partnership, after a one-year fitting. METHODS: 49 subjects having mild to severe sensorineural or mixed hearing loss in the better ear were analyzed. They were divided into adults and elderly groups. The research of Sentence Recognition Threshold and Percent Indexes in Quiet and in Noise was carried out in sound field through the Portuguese Sentences Lists test; the satisfaction questionnaire, International Outcome Inventory for Hearing Aids (IOI-HA), was also applied. The tests were carried out in the same session, in two distinctive timeframes: the first one without using hearing aids, and the second one using hearing aids. RESULTS: there was a meaningful difference in both groups regarding the procedure carried out in silence. Although the performance in noise has not resulted in meaningful improvement, the patients had positive scores in the questionnaire. When comparing both groups, no significant difference in performance and satisfaction was observed. CONCLUSION: the meaningful improvement in silence agrees with the patients report. The questionnaire showed that most patients referred as making effective use of the hearing aids and having a very satisfying benefit. Although some patients referred a moderate or great residual difficulty, most of them considered that using hearing aids is really worthy.

OBJETIVO: determinar os limiares de reconhecimento de sentenças no silêncio (LRSS) e no ruído (LRSR), a fim de estimar os valores de referência para jovens adultos normo-ouvintes. METODOLOGIA: foram avaliados 240 indivíduos, de ambos os sexos, com idades entre 18 e 30 anos, com no mínimo o ensino médio completo. As medidas foram obtidas utilizando o teste Listas de Sentenças em Português (LSP, Costa, 1998), em fones auriculares. Para a obtenção dos LRSR foi usado um ruído fixo a 65 dB NA, ipsilateralmente, cujos resultados foram expressos por meio das relações S/R. RESULTADOS: com base nos valores encontrados a partir da avaliação de 480 orelhas, o LRSS médio encontrado foi de 6,20 dB NA, com valores mínimos e máximos de 2,44 dB NA e 9,66 dB NA, respectivamente, e um desvio-padrão médio de 1,33; enquanto que a relação S/R média foi de -5,29 dB, com valores mínimos e máximos de -2,55 dB e -9,22 dB, e um desvio-padrão médio de 1,13. CONCLUSÃO: o LRSS médio, 6,20 dB NA, foi compatível com a média dos limiares tonais, 7,22 dB NA, nas freqüências de 0,5, 1 e 2 kHz. O LRSR médio -5,29 dB pode ser usado como referência para avaliar o desempenho de indivíduos com e sem perda auditiva. Os LRSR obtidos em relações S/R de -3,03 a -7,55 dB podem indicar um bom desempenho no reconhecimento de fala no ruído.PURPOSE: to determine the thresholds for sentence recognition in quiet (SRTQ) and in noise (SRTN) in order to estimate the benchmarks for young normal hearing adults. METHODS: the study included 240 individuals of both genders, aged between 18 and 30 year old with at least with high school education. Measurements were obtained using the Portuguese Sentence List test (COSTA, 1998), in earphones. In order to obtain the SRTN, a fixed noise - 65 dB was used ipsilaterally and the results were expressed through the signal/noise ratio. RESULTS: based on the values found from the evaluation of 480 ears, SRTQ average was 6.20 dB NA, with minimum and maximum values of 2.44 dB NA and 9.66 dB NA, respectively. The average standard deviation was 1.33; while the average signal/noise ratio was -5.29 dB, with minimum and maximum values of -2.55 dB and -9.22 dB, and average standard deviation 1.13. CONCLUSION: the average SRTQ, 6.20 dB NA, was compatible with the pure tone threshold average, 7.22 dB NA at frequencies of 0.5, 1 and 2 kHz. The average SRTN -5.29 dB can be used as a benchmark to evaluate the performance of individuals with and without hearing loss. The SRTN obtained in signal/noise ratios of -3.03 to -7.55 dB may indicate good performance as for speech recognition in noise.

Introduction: Clinical and experimental study. Individuals with a normal hearing can be jeopardized in adverse communication situations, what negatively interferes with speech clearness. Objective: check and compare the performance of normal hearing young adults who have a difficulty in understanding speech during noise or not, by making use of sentences as stimuli. Method: 50 normal hearing individuals, 21 of whom were male and 29 were female, aged between 19 and 32, were evaluated and divided into two groups: with and without a clinical complaint about understanding speech during noise. By using Portuguese Sentence Lists test, the Recognition Threshold of Sentences during Noise research was performed, through which the signal-to-noise (SN) ratios were obtained. The contrasting noise was introduced at 65 dB NA. Results: the average values achieved for SN ratios in the left ear, for the group without a complaint and the group with a complaint, were respectively 6.26 dB and 3.62 dB. For the left ear, the values were -7.12 dB and -4.12 dB. A statistically significant difference was noticed in both right and left ears of the two groups. Conclusion: normal hearing individuals showing a clinical complaint about understanding speech at noisy places have more difficulty in the task to recognize sentences during noise, in comparison with the people who do not face such a difficulty. Accordingly, the customary audiologic evaluation must include tests using sentences during a contrasting noise, with a view to evaluating the speech recognition performance more reliably and efficiently. OBJETIVO: Determinar e comparar os limiares de reconhecimento de sentenças no ruído, em campo livre, na presença de ruído incidente de diferentes ângulos e verificar qual a condição de escuta mais desfavorável, em indivíduos normo-ouvintes. MÉTODOS: Aplicou-se o teste Listas de Sentenças em Português em 38 adultos jovens, avaliados em cabine acústica. As sentenças foram apresentadas a 0°- 0º azimute e o ruído competitivo a 0°- 0°, 0º- 90º, 0º - 180° e 0º - 270º azimute, em intensidade fixa de 65 dB NPS (A). RESULTADOS: As relações sinal-ruído nas quais foram obtidos os limiares de reconhecimento de sentenças no ruído para estes ângulos de incidência foram, respectivamente: -7,56, -11,11, -9,75 e -10,43 dB. Houve diferença entre os resultados nas condições: 0º- 0º e 0º - 90º; 0º - 0º e 0º - 180º; - 0º - 0º e 0º - 270º. CONCLUSÃO: Os seguintes limiares de reconhecimento de sentenças no ruído, em campo livre, foram obtidos nessas relações sinal/ruído: 0° - 0° = -7,56 dB; -0º - 90º = -11,11 dB; -0º - 180° = -9,75 dB; 0º - 270º = -10,43 dB. Os melhores limiares no ruído foram obtidos com os ângulos de incidência de 0º - 90º e 0º - 270º, seguidos pela condição de 0º - 180º e, por último, 0º - 0º. A condição de escuta no ruído mais desfavorável foi aquela na qual o ruído encontra-se no mesmo ângulo de incidência da fala, na posição frontal do indivíduo avaliado.PURPOSE: To determine and compare the sentence recognition thresholds in the noise, in sound field, in the presence of incident noise from different angles, and to verify the most unfavorable hearing condition, in normal-hearing individuals. METHODS: The Portuguese Sentences Lists test was carried out in 38 young adults, evaluated in acoustic booth. The sentences were presented at 0º - 0º azimuth, and the competitive noise at 0º - 0°, 0° - 90°, 0° - 180°, and 0° - 270° azimuth, in a fixed loudness of 65 dB NPS (A). RESULTS: The signal-to-noise ratios in which the sentence recognition thresholds were obtained for these incidence angles were, respectively: -7.56, -11.11, -9.45, and -10.43 dB. Differences were found between the results in the conditions: 0º - 0º and 0º - 90º; 0º - 0º and 0º - 180º; -0º - 0º and 0º - 270º. CONCLUSION: The following sentence recognition thresholds in the noise, in sound field, were obtained for these signal-to-noise ratios: 0° - 0° = -7.56 dB; -0º - 90º = -11.11 dB; -0º - 180° = -9.75 dB; 0º - 270º = -10.43 dB. The better thresholds were obtained with the incidence angles of 0º - 90º and 0º - 270º, followed by the 0º - 180º condition, and, finally, by the 0º - 0º condition. The most unfavorable hearing condition was that in which the noise was in the same incidence angle of the speech, in front of the evaluated subject.

OBJETIVOS: investigar a melhora no desempenho e na restrição de participação de usuários de próteses auditivas, após um período de três meses, e verificar se houve correlação entre os resultados obtidos nestes dois aspectos. MÉTODOS: analisou-se 13 sujeitos, com perda auditiva do tipo neurossensorial de grau leve a moderadamente severo, com idades entre 28 e 60 anos. Realizou-se a pesquisa dos Limiares e Índices Percentuais de Reconhecimento de Sentenças no Silêncio e no Ruído (LRSS e LRSR, IPRSS e IPRSR), em campo livre, através do teste Listas de Sentenças em Português; e aplicou-se o questionário Hearing Handicap Inventory for Adults (HHIA). A primeira avaliação foi realizada antes da adaptação das próteses auditivas, sem o uso das mesmas, e a segunda, três meses após a adaptação, com o paciente fazendo uso das próteses auditivas. RESULTADOS: a an álise estatística evidenciou melhora significante, tanto em relação à restrição de participação (HHIA), quanto no desempenho das avaliações (LRSS, LRSR, IPRSS e IPRSR). Ao correlacionar a melhora na restrição de participação (HHIA), com a melhora do desempenho nos demais procedimentos, houve correlação significante apenas entre a melhora no HHIA e a melhora no LRSR. CONCLUSÃO: os usuários avaliados apresentaram sensação de restrição da participação diminuída, e melhora significante no desempenho em situações de reconhecimento de fala, tanto no silêncio quanto no ruído. Houve correlação entre a melhora nas respostas no HHIA e o LRSR, devido ao fato de que as maiores queixas em indivíduos com perda auditiva neurossensorial estarem relacionadas à presença de ruído competitivo.PURPOSE: to investigate the improvement in the performance and in the participation restriction of hearing aids users after a three-month period, as well as to find out a possible correlation between the results obtained in these two aspects. METHODS: 13 subjects having mild to moderate-severe sensorineural hearing loss, aged between 28 and 60 year old, were analyzed. The research of Sentence Recognition Threshold and Percent Indexes in Quiet and in Noise (SRTQ and SRTN, PISRQ and PISRN) was carried out in sound field through the Portuguese Sentences Lists test. The Hearing Handicap Inventory for Adults (HHIA) questionnaire was also applied. The first assessment was performed before the hearing aids fitting, without patients using them; the second, three months later, with the patients using the hearing aids. RESULTS: the statistical analysis showed a significant improvement not only in relation to participation restriction (HHIA) but also in the performance of assessments (SRTQ, SRTN, PISRQ PISRN). When correlating the improvement in participation restriction (HHIA) with the improvement in the other procedures, there was a significant correlation only between the improvement in HHIA and the improvement in SRTN. CONCLUSION: the assessed users showed a feeling of decreased participation restriction, and a performance improvement in situations of speech recognition in quiet as well as in noise. There was a correlation between an improvement in the answers to HHIA and SRTN due to the fact that most complaints in people with sensorineural hearing loss are related to the presence of competitive noise.

Introduction: Tinnitus and hyperacusis are increasingly frequent audiological symptoms that may occur in the absence of the hearing involvement, but it does not offer a lower impact or bothering to the affected individuals. The Medial Olivocochlear System helps in the speech recognition in noise and may be connected to the presence of tinnitus and hyperacusis. Objective: To evaluate the speech recognition of normal-hearing individual with and without complaints of tinnitus and hyperacusis, and to compare their results. Method: Descriptive, prospective and cross-study in which 19 normal-hearing individuals were evaluated with complaint of tinnitus and hyperacusis of the Study Group (SG), and 23 normal-hearing individuals without audiological complaints of the Control Group (CG). The individuals of both groups were submitted to the test List of Sentences in Portuguese, prepared by Costa (1998) to determine the Sentences Recognition Threshold in Silence (LRSS) and the signal to noise ratio (S/N). The SG also answered the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory for tinnitus analysis, and to characterize hyperacusis the discomfort thresholds were set. Results: The CG and SG presented with average LRSS and S/N ratio of 7.34 dB NA and -6.77 dB, and of 7.20 dB NA and -4.89 dB, respectively. Conclusion: The normal-hearing individuals with or without audiological complaints of tinnitus and hyperacusis had a similar performance in the speech recognition in silence, which was not the case when evaluated in the presence of competitive noise, since the SG had a lower performance in this communication scenario, with a statistically significant difference.

OBJETIVO: Verificar a influência do tempo de uso da amplificação sobre o benefício obtido com as próteses auditivas, para novos usuários e comparar os resultados de usuários de amplificação linear e não linear com compressão dinâmica. MÉTODOS: foram examinados 37 indivíduos portadores de perda auditiva neurossensorial de grau leve a moderadamente severo, novos usuários de próteses auditivas. Os indivíduos foram reunidos em dois grupos: Grupo Linear - composto por 13 indivíduos adaptados com amplificação linear; e Grupo Não Linear - composto por 24 indivíduos adaptados com compressão dinâmica. As avaliações foram realizadas 14 e 90 dias após a adaptação das próteses. Foram obtidos, em campo livre, os limiares de reconhecimento de sentenças no silêncio e no ruído e os índices percentuais de reconhecimento de sentenças no silêncio e no ruído. Os dados foram analisados por meio dos testes de Wilcoxon e Mann-Whitney. RESULTADOS: Os valores obtidos após 14 e 90 dias de uso da amplificação, para ambos os grupos, não apresentaram diferenças significativas. Quando comparados os grupos, os valores também não revelaram diferenças estatísticas. CONCLUSÃO: Não foi verificada influência do tempo de uso da amplificação sobre o benefício obtido com as próteses. Não houve diferenças nos resultados alcançados pelos novos usuários de amplificação linear daqueles obtidos pelos novos usuários de amplificação não linear.PURPOSE: To verify the influence of the period of amplification use over the benefit obtained with hearing aids for new users, and to compare the results of users of linear and non linear amplification with dynamic compression. METHODS: Thirty-seven individuals with mild to moderate-severe sensorineural hearing loss who were new users of hearing aids were examined. Individuals were gathered in two groups: Linear Group - comprising 13 individuals with linear amplification fitting; and Non Linear Group - comprising 24 individuals with dynamic compression fitting. Evaluations were carried out 14 and 90 days after hearing aids fitting, in sound field. The sentence recognition threshold was obtained both in silence and in noise, as well as the percentual indexes of sentences recognition. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon and the Mann-Whitney tests. RESULTS: The values obtained after 14 and 90 days of amplification use, for both groups, did not show significant differences. The values also did not reveal any differences when the groups were compared. CONCLUSION: It was not found any influences of the period of amplification use over the benefit obtained from hearing aids. There were no differences between the results achieved by new users of linear amplification and those of new users of non linear amplification.

OBJETIVO: determinar curvas logoaudiométricas, utilizando o teste Listas de Sentenças em Português (LSP), em um grupo de indivíduos normo-ouvintes e um grupo de indivíduos com perda auditiva neurossensorial, e comparar os resultados obtidos nestes grupos. MÉTODOS: utilizou-se o teste Listas de Sentenças em Português (LSP) para determinar os Limiares de Detecção de Voz (LDV), Limiares de Reconhecimento de Sentenças no Silêncio (LRSS), e os Índices Percentuais Máximos de Reconhecimento de Sentenças no Silêncio (IPMRSS), em um grupo de indivíduos normo-ouvintes (grupo A) e um grupo de indivíduos com perda auditiva neurossensorial (grupo B). RESULTADOS: o grupo A foi composto por 19 indivíduos do sexo feminino e 11 do sexo masculino, com idades entre 18 e 40 anos. No grupo B, 15 indivíduos eram do sexo feminino e 14 eram do sexo masculino, com idades variando entre 23 e 81 anos. Para o grupo A, encontraram-se valores médios de 16,47 dB para o LDV; 23,77 dB para o LRSS e de 31,23 dB para o IPMRSS. Já no grupo B, os valores encontrados foram de 38,38 dB para o LDV; 50,35 dB para o LRSS e 59,65 dB para o IPMRSS. Na análise estatística, encontrou-se diferença estatisticamente significante entre os grupos. CONCLUSÃO: foram traçadas as curvas logoaudiométricas para os grupos estudados. Os dados permitem inferir que a cada 1 dB de variação, na intensidade de apresentação das sentenças, ocasionou uma mudança de 6,77% no reconhecimento de fala para os indivíduos normo-ouvintes e de 4,70% e no grupo de indivíduos com perda auditiva.PURPOSE: to determine the Performance-Intensity function for sentences in a group of individuals with normal hearing and a group of individuals with sensorineural hearing loss, through the Portuguese Sentence List test (PSL), and compare the results obtained in these groups. METHODS: the PSL test was used to determine voice detection threshold (VDT), recognition sentences in silence threshold (RSST) and maximum percent indexes of sentences recognition in silence (MPISRS), in a group of individuals with normal hearing (group A) and a group of individuals with sensorineural hearing loss (group B). RESULTS: group A was made of 30 subjects, 19 female and 11 male, from 18 to 40-year old. In group B, 15 subjects were female and 14 were male, from 23 to 81-year old. In group A, were found average values of 16.47 dB for the VDT, 23.77 dB for the RSST and 31.23 dB for the MPISRS. In group B, were found values of 38.38 dB for the VDT, 50.35 dB for the RSST and 59.65 dB for the MPISRS. The statistical analysis showed statistically significant differences between the groups. CONCLUSION: performance-intensity functions for sentences were obtained with the PSL test. The results showed that each 1 dB of variation in intensity for sentence presentation represented a change of 6.77% in speech recognition for normal hearing individuals and 4.70% in a group of individuals with hearing loss.

OBJETIVO: verificar o efeito da aclimatização no reconhecimento de sentenças no silêncio e no ruído, em novos usuários de próteses auditivas, avaliados sem as mesmas, antes e após o período de aclimatização. MÉTODOS: participaram do estudo 40 indivíduos, idade entre 28 e 78 anos, que possuíam perda auditiva neurossensorial de grau leve a moderadamente severo, e estavam iniciando o processo de seleção e adaptação de próteses auditivas. Os testes foram realizados em diferentes sessões: antes da adaptação das próteses auditivas, 14 dias e três meses após a adaptação. Foi aplicado o teste Listas de Sentenças em Português (COSTA, 1997), em campo livre, no silêncio e no ruído, ambos em intensidade fixa de 65 dB A, na qual foram obtidos os índices percentuais de reconhecimento de sentenças no silêncio (IPRSS) e no ruído (IPRSR). RESULTADOS: os valores médios obtidos para o IPRSS na 1ª, 2ª e 3ª sessões foram, respectivamente, 65%; 72% e 83% dB A. Já as médias dos IPRSR para a 1ª, 2ª e 3ª sessões foram 51%; 58% e 59% dB A. Ao comparar os resultados obtidos entre as sessões, foi verificada diferença estatisticamente significante, para o IPRSS, entre 1ª e a 3ª e entre a 2ª e a 3ª sessão e, para o IPRSR, entre a 1ª e a 2ª e entre a 1ª e a 3ª sessão. CONCLUSÃO: os indivíduos melhoraram seu desempenho ao longo do uso das próteses auditivas, mesmo sendo avaliados sem as mesmas e essa melhora pode estar relacionada ao efeito da aclimatização.PURPOSE: to check the effect of acclimatization on sentence recognition in quiet environment and under noise, in new users of hearing aids, evaluated without their use, before and after the acclimatization period. METHODS: the study comprised 40 individuals, aged between 28 and 78year old with mild to moderate sensorineural hearing loss. They were starting the selection and adaptation process of hearing aids. The tests were conducted in three sessions, before the adaptation of hearing aids, fourteen days and three months later, respectively. they were applied to Portuguese Sentences Lists test (COSTA, 1997), in free field, in quiet environment and under noise, both in fixed 65 dB A intensity, in which we obtained the percentual indexes of sentences recognition in quiet environment (PISRQ) and under noise (PISRN). RESULTS: the mean values for PISRQ in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd sessions were, respectively, 65%; 72% e 83% dB A. The mean values of PISRN for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd sessions were 51%; 58% e 59% dB A, respectively. While comparing the results between sessions, there was a statistically significant difference for PISRQ between the 1st and 3rd e and between the 2nd and 3rd session, and for PISRN, between the 1st and 2nd e and between the 1st and 3rd session. CONCLUSION: the subjects improved their performance using hearing aids, even being evaluated without them, and this improvement may be related to the acclimatization effect.

OBJETIVO: verificar a equivalência entre as listas de sentenças do teste Listas de Sentenças em Português, proposto por Costa em 1998. MÉTODOS: as informações foram retiradas de um banco de dados de um projeto de pesquisa. Foram selecionados 240 indivíduos que possuíam no mínimo o ensino médio completo, com idade entre 18 e 30 anos e apresentarem limiares de audibilidade dentro da normalidade. Os Limiares de Reconhecimento de Sentenças no Silêncio e no Ruído foram pesquisados em cada orelha separadamente através de fones auriculares. No Limiar de Reconhecimento de Sentenças no Ruído, fala e ruído foram apresentadas ipsilateralmente. RESULTADOS: ao comparar os resultados encontrados entre as listas, obteve-se uma diferença média de 0,03 dB NA a 0,86 dB NA no silêncio e de 0,04 dB NA a 1,06 dB NA no ruído. Observou-se também que os valores mínimos e máximos nas seis listas foram muito próximos. CONCLUSÃO: observou-se que na aplicação do teste Listas de Sentenças em Português, através de fones auriculares, tanto no silêncio como no ruído, foram obtidos resultados similares nas listas 1B, 2B, 3B, 4B, 5B e 6B, mostrando haver equivalência entre as listas.PURPOSE: to investigate the equivalence among of sentence lists of the test: Lists of Sentences, in Portuguese, proposed by Costa in 1998. METHODS: the information was taken from a database of a research project. 240 individuals with at least complete high-school, 18 to 30-year old and having normal audibility thresholds, were studied. The Sentence Recognition Thresholds under Silence and under Noise were separately searched in each ear through earphones. In The Sentence Recognition Thresholds under the Noise, speech and noise were presented at the same ear. RESULTS: comparing the results among the lists, we find average difference of 0.03 dB NA to 0.86 dB NA under silence and 0.04 dB NA to 1.06 dB NA under noise. The minimum and maximum values in the six lists were very close. CONCLUSION: it was observed that in the application of the test Lists of Sentences in Portuguese, through earphones, both under silence as well as under noise, similar results were obtained in the lists 1B, 2B, 3B, 4B, 5B and 6B, showing equivalence among the lists.
