Examines perceptions of faculty and promotion and tenure-committee members regarding the perceived prestige and legitimacy of electronic journals as an outlet for scholarly communication. Respondents gave the greatest importance to the role of peer-reviewed publications to the tenure, promotion, and merit-review process; therefore, the long-term growth and sustainability of electronic journals must more directly address this issue. In this work we discuss some of the key behavioral drivers that taken as a whole have made for a less than ideal relationship between research, model development, and use/reliance in practice. From a general public-good perspective, there is an obvious need for academics to take on a greater role of responsibility when it comes to both research and curriculum in an effort to avoid some of the failings that our past work has inevitably encouraged to date. Interruptions while performing an important task affect the quality of work and project delivery. The way in which interruptions can affect overall performance and influence relationship between information presentation format and type of task performed is discussed.

Facts from two studies are re-examined in order to promote an integrated paradigm for an individual to accept the use of information technology. This paradigm analyzes the impact of pre-training and user acceptance enablers, to comprehend the development of user awareness before a system is used, and thus establishes itself as an improved forecasting method for user behavior.

Information technology can facilitate organizational learning but only within an appropriate system. Little has been written about the mechanisms which would operate within a successful learning system. A phased-model approach to intranet usage reveals the elements which should be present in an infrastructure which encourages and documents organizational learning through use of this technology. The intranet can support learning at all levels through increased, speedier access to better quality information. Organizations can also monitor learning through its intranet infrastructure.

An experimental investigation was conducted to analyze both experienced and novice systems analysts utilizing both procedural and object-oriented methods. A human problem-solving model based on Newell and Simon was used as the theoretical basis for the study. Findings showed that both novice and experienced systems analysts have higher subjective mental workload when using object-oriented analysis. Also, novices prefer object-oriented methods and find these techniques easier compared to experienced analysts.

Developing a human resource system designed to identify! attract, and retain an adequate complement of global managers who are capable of coordinating the global strategic efforts of the firm while at the same time controlling local host country strategies is a daunting task. Many organizations attempting to globalize find that there are a limited number of qualified leaders to manage in a global context thereby inhibiting the globalization process. By having insatiate managers domicile in the domestic organization, the process of both multiculturalism and transmittals can be activated in the MNC. The need for a global experience base becomes more apparent when one considers the influence of top management's background on the resulting organizational strategic orientation. Inpatriate managers can also generate invaluable input to the development of the human resource function in emerging markets by providing accurate advice on the adaptation of specific technical dimensions of the human resource process.

Two experiments were conducted to determine the influence of interruptions and their characteristics, such as frequency of occurrence, on individual decision making. Findings showed that interruptions improved decision-making performance on simple tasks, while affecting performance on complex tasks. The experiments also established that increased interruption frequency resulted in both increased decision time and decreased decision accuracy.

The level of data aggregation may have an effect on task complexity and the potential for pattern recognition of the user of geographic information systems (GIS). An experiment was conducted to examine these effects and their interactions. Subjects employed a GIS including map-based data characterized by various levels of problem size, data dispersion and data aggregation. Findings showed that all of these geographic information properties have significant effects on decision performance.

Firms internationalizing their operations have always been challenged to select, develop, and implement a sufficient amount of foreign subsidiary manager talent. This challenge is exacerbated in today's global environment involving an increasing emphasis on transnational internationalization strategies and growing business opportunities in emerging markets. Successfully identifying and developing these managers is essential for a firm implementing a internationalization strategy, and necessitates the creation of effective high performance work systems practices that can lead to the development of a strategic international human resource system. This article integrates agency and organizational capabilities theory to better understand how human resource systems can be created to develop highly effective foreign subsidiary managers who can implement selected internationalization strategies. More specifically, foreign subsidiary manager capabilities are identified contingent upon the internationalization strategy resulting in an examination of different human resource practices that could be bundled together to develop foreign subsidiary manager talent. Relationship marketing has become a frequently used strategy to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of an organization's marketing efforts. In order to manage relationships effectively over time, the domain (i.e., type of relationship) and the relational linkage (i.e., richness of interaction and communications) must be determined. In this paper, a process for establishing virtual management perspectives is developed illustrating the steps necessary for managing relationships between organizations and individuals within organizations. Developing a multicultural management has gained increasing importance in many global organizations. Although there are multiple candidate pools from which organizations can hire and develop managers, one global staffing option -- inpatriate managers -- can successfully provide a more multicultural management frame of reference when developing global strategies. Inpatriation is defined here as the process of transferring international managers from their overseas assignments to the home/domestic market on a semipermanent/permanent assignment. This article examines the rationale for using inpatriating managers in global organizations and discusses organizational support mechanisms for managing the stress associated with inpatriates' relocation. Interest in object-oriented analysis (OOA) and object-oriented design (OOD) has expanded rapidly over the last several years. Proponents of OOA and OOD have called the shift to these methods "revolutionary" and have cited a number of impressive claims with respect to their use. However, empirical research investigating these claims remains in its infancy. Moreover, an examination of the literature reveals inconclusive and often conflicting results for OOA and OOD methods relative to traditional data and/ or procedural techniques. This paper presents the results of an empirical study that examined both experienced and novice systems analysts using both procedural and object-oriented techniques. This research examined whether experience in using procedural methods helped or hindered performance using OOA and compared procedural and OOA methods on the subjective mental workload induced. A human problem-solving model adopted from Newell and Simon (1972) provided the theoretical framework for this study. Dependent variables include subjective mental workload, solution quality, time to perform task, and attitudinal measures. Although some of these dependent variables have been used in past research, we believe this is the first time that subjective mental workload (SMW) has been examined in an IS context. Our results indicate that both novice and experienced subjects demonstrate higher SMW when using OOA. In addition, as a group, novices prefer object-oriented techniques and find these techniques easier as compared to experienced subjects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
