This data article describes a dataset on European road freight traffic. The dataset includes truck traffic flows between 1675 regions all over Europe. In addition to the road freight flows in tons as well as number of vehicles, the dataset also contains the shortest path between the respective regions on the European highway network (E-roads). Fifteen columns provide the following information for each pair of regions: (1) ID origin region, (2) name origin region, (3) ID destination region, (4) name destination region, (5) path in the E-road network, (6) distance from origin region to the E-road network, (7) distance within the E-road network, (8) distance from the E-road network to the destination region, (9) total distance, (10) road freight flow in tons for 2010, (11) road freight flow in tons for 2019, (12) road freight flow in tons for 2030, (13) truck traffic flow in number of vehicles for 2010, (14) truck traffic flow in number of vehicles for 2019, (15) truck traffic flow in number of vehicles for 2030. In addition, a table of nodes and a table of edges of the modelled E-road network is available. Finally, a list with supplementary information on the regions under consideration is given. In 2010, the ETISplus project collected Europe-wide freight volumes from various EU sources as well as from the EU countries and calibrated the resulting origin-destination matrices with measured traffic flows. For the dataset described here, the road freight volume was updated using Eurostat data and a forecast up to 2030 was added. The freight volume was converted into vehicles travelling. Subsequently, the highway network relevant for trucks was extracted from the ETISplus project and manually updated with the current E-road network. Finally, each origin-destination freight volume was allocated to the network using Dijkstra's algorithm. This provides a synthetically generated road freight traffic volume for each road section. The generated data provide an extremely relevant basis for the design of future road infrastructure in Europe, for example hydrogen refuelling stations or charging stations for electric trucks. Anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) is crucial for controlling the emission of this potent greenhouse gas to the atmosphere. Nitrite-, nitrate-, and sulfate-dependent methane oxidation is well-documented, but AOM coupled to the reduction of oxidized metals has so far been demonstrated only in environmental samples. Here, using a freshwater enrichment culture, we show that archaea of the order Methanosarcinales , related to " Candidatus Methanoperedens nitroreducens," couple the reduction of environmentally relevant forms of Fe 3+ and Mn 4+ to the oxidation of methane. We obtained an enrichment culture of these archaea under anaerobic, nitrate-reducing conditions with a continuous supply of methane. Via batch incubations using [ 13 C]methane, we demonstrated that soluble ferric iron (Fe 3+ , as Fe-citrate) and nanoparticulate forms of Fe 3+ and Mn 4+ supported methane-oxidizing activity. CO 2 and ferrous iron (Fe 2+ ) were produced in stoichiometric amounts. Our study connects the previous finding of iron-dependent AOM to microorganisms detected in numerous habitats worldwide. Microbial methane oxidizers play a crucial role in the oxidation of methane in marine ecosystems, as such preventing the escape of excessive methane to the atmosphere. Despite the important role of methanotrophs in marine ecosystems, only a limited number of isolates are described, with only four genomes available. Here, we report on two genomes of gammaproteobacterial methanotroph cultures, affiliated with the deep-sea cluster 2, obtained from North Sea sediment. Initial enrichments using methane as sole source of carbon and energy and mimicking the in situ conditions followed by serial subcultivations and multiple extinction culturing events over a period of 3 years resulted in a highly enriched culture. The draft genomes of the methane oxidizer in both cultures showed the presence of genes typically found in type I methanotrophs, including genes encoding particulate methane monooxygenase (pmoCAB), genes for tetrahydromethanopterin (H4MPT)- and tetrahydrofolate (H4F)-dependent C1-transfer pathways, and genes of the ribulose monophosphate (RuMP) pathway. The most distinctive feature, when compared to other available gammaproteobacterial genomes, is the absence of a calcium-dependent methanol dehydrogenase. Both genomes reported here only have a xoxF gene encoding a lanthanide-dependent XoxF5-type methanol dehydrogenase. Thus, these genomes offer novel insight in the genomic landscape of uncultured diversity of marine methanotrophs.

Anaerobic ammonium-oxidizing (anammox) bacteria are responsible for a significant portion of the loss of fixed nitrogen from the oceans, making them important players in the global nitrogen cycle. To date, marine anammox bacteria found in marine water columns and sediments worldwide belong almost exclusively to the 'Candidatus Scalindua' species, but the molecular basis of their metabolism and competitive fitness is presently unknown. We applied community sequencing of a marine anammox enrichment culture dominated by 'Candidatus Scalindua profunda' to construct a genome assembly, which was subsequently used to analyse the most abundant gene transcripts and proteins. In the S. profunda assembly, 4756 genes were annotated, and only about half of them showed the highest identity to the only other anammox bacterium of which a metagenome assembly had been constructed so far, the freshwater 'Candidatus Kuenenia stuttgartiensis'. In total, 2016 genes of S. profunda could not be matched to the K. stuttgartiensis metagenome assembly at all, and a similar number of genes in K.stuttgartiensis could not be found in S. profunda. Most of these genes did not have a known function but 98 expressed genes could be attributed to oligopeptide transport, amino acid metabolism, use of organic acids and electron transport. On the basis of the S. profunda metagenome, and environmental metagenome data, we observed pronounced differences in the gene organization and expression of important anammox enzymes, such as hydrazine synthase (HzsAB), nitrite reductase (NirS) and inorganic nitrogen transport proteins. Adaptations of Scalindua to the substrate limitation of the ocean may include highly expressed ammonium, nitrite and oligopeptide transport systems and pathways for the transport, oxidation, and assimilation of small organic compounds that may allow a more versatile lifestyle contributing to the competitive fitness of Scalindua in the marine realm., (© 2012 Society for Applied Microbiology and Blackwell Publishing Ltd.)

Marine microorganisms are important for the global nitrogen cycle, but marine nitrifiers, especially aerobic nitrite oxidizers, remain largely unexplored. To increase the number of cultured representatives of marine nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB), a bioreactor cultivation approach was adopted to first enrich nitrifiers and ultimately nitrite oxidizers from Dutch coastal North Sea water. With solely ammonia as the substrate an active nitrifying community consisting of novel marine Nitrosomonas aerobic ammonia oxidizers (ammonia-oxidizing bacteria) and Nitrospina and Nitrospira NOB was obtained which converted a maximum of 2 mmol of ammonia per liter per day. Switching the feed of the culture to nitrite as a sole substrate resulted in a Nitrospira NOB dominated community (approximately 80% of the total microbial community based on fluorescence in situ hybridization and metagenomic data) converting a maximum of 3 mmol of nitrite per liter per day. Phylogenetic analyses based on the 16S rRNA gene indicated that the Nitrospira enriched from the North Sea is a novel Nitrospira species with Nitrospira marina as the next taxonomically described relative (94% 16S rRNA sequence identity). Transmission electron microscopy analysis revealed a cell plan typical for Nitrospira species. The cytoplasm contained electron light particles that might represent glycogen storage. A large periplasmic space was present which was filled with electron dense particles. Nitrospira-targeted polymerase chain reaction analyses demonstrated the presence of the enriched Nitrospira species in a time series of North Sea genomic DNA samples. The availability of this new Nitrospira species enrichment culture facilitates further in-depth studies such as determination of physiological constraints, and comparison to other NOB species.

In a previous paper, the authors described three paradigms applicable to automated medical text analysis. In this paper, the relative importance of the three paradigms is discussed, viz. the relative value of the linguistic word categorization, the semantic paradigm, and the medical fact delineation. The strategy adopted was to limit the linguistic disambiguation and apply probabilistic rules, in order to speed up the analytic process.

Clinical practice of medicine is highly information-intensive. At the bedside, past experience is the primary justification of reasoning and decisions. This past medical experience is an amalgamation of textbook information and personal experience. During the last 2-3 decades, both of these major sources of clinical information have appeared less and less effective. The pace of progress, resulting in better diagnostic tools and new therapies, has undermined our personal experience, and for the same reason, the time lapse between drafting the manuscripts and distributing the textbooks has become a growing problem. Emphasis has shifted from textbooks to scientific journals with shorter publishing delays, and the role of daily newspapers and television programs seems to be growing. The traditional ways of gathering clinical knowledge and experience seem to fail more and more. In addition to textbooks and scientific journals, current clinical experience is described in millions of patient records, stored in hospitals and ambulatory care offices. However, we have no easy access to patient charts, and we are lacking a method for cost-effective merging of clinical case histories to make them suitable for much-needed statistical inferences. Computers could make a major contribution in this area, but first we must bridge the gap between the narrative text in the medical record and computer technology. Recently, much encouraging progress has been made in automated medical text processing, the topic of this paper.

Twenty homosexual men [13 anti-human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive, seven anti-HIV negative] without HBsAg, anti-HBs, and anti-HBc were vaccinated with three 20 micrograms doses of a recombinant hepatitis B vaccine. All anti-HIV-positive homosexuals were nonresponders independent of the initial number of CD4-positive cells. Among seven anti-HIV-negative individuals, five responded. After three doses of the vaccine, CD4-positive cells fell in anti-HIV positive individuals by 22.4%. A similar fall in CD4-positive cells of an average 24.9% was noted in 17 matching, but nonvaccinated, anti-HIV-positive homosexuals. The study indicates that the efficacy of vaccination in anti-HIV-positive individuals is questionable. There is, however, no evidence that vaccination against hepatitis B might be harmful to anti-HIV-positive subjects.
