Recent evidence suggests that individuals differ in foraging tactics and this variation is often linked to an individual's behavioural type (BT). Yet, while foraging typically comprises a series of search and handling steps, empirical investigations have rarely considered BT‐dependent effects across multiple stages of the foraging process, particularly in natural settings. In our long‐term sleepy lizard (Tiliqua rugosa) study system, individuals exhibit behavioural consistency in boldness (measured as an individual's willingness to approach a novel food item in the presence of a threat) and aggressiveness (measured as an individual's response to an ‘attack’ by a conspecific dummy). These BTs are only weakly correlated and have previously been shown to have interactive effects on lizard space use and movement, suggesting that they could also affect lizard foraging performance, particularly in their search behaviour for food. To investigate how lizards' BTs affect their foraging process in the wild, we supplemented food in 123 patches across a 120‐ha study site with three food abundance treatments (high, low and no‐food controls). Patches were replenished twice a week over the species' entire spring activity season and feeding behaviours were quantified with camera traps at these patches. We tracked lizards using GPS to determine their home range (HR) size and repeatedly assayed their aggressiveness and boldness in designated assays. We hypothesised that bolder lizards would be more efficient foragers while aggressive ones would be less attentive to the quality of foraging patches. We found an interactive BT effect on overall foraging performance. Individuals that were both bold and aggressive ate the highest number of food items from the foraging array. Further dissection of the foraging process showed that aggressive lizards in general ate the fewest food items in part because they visited foraging patches less regularly, and because they discriminated less between high and low‐quality patches when revisiting them. Bolder lizards, in contrast, ate more tomatoes because they visited foraging patches more regularly, and ate a higher proportion of the available tomatoes at patches during visits. Our study demonstrates that BTs can interact to affect different search and handling components of the foraging process, leading to within‐population variation in foraging success. Given that individual differences in foraging and movement will influence social and ecological interactions, our results highlight the potential role of BT's in shaping individual fitness strategies and population dynamics. Extensive ice coverage largely prevents investigations of Antarctica's unglaciated past. Knowledge about environmental and tectonic development before large-scale glaciation, however, is important for understanding the transition into the modern icehouse world. We report geochronological and sedimentological data from a drill core from the Amundsen Sea shelf, providing insights into tectonic and topographic conditions during the Eocene (~44 to 34 million years ago), shortly before major ice sheet buildup. Our findings reveal the Eocene as a transition period from >40 million years of relative tectonic quiescence toward reactivation of the West Antarctic Rift System, coinciding with incipient volcanism, rise of the Transantarctic Mountains, and renewed sedimentation under temperate climate conditions. The recovered sediments were deposited in a coastal-estuarine swamp environment at the outlet of a >1500-km-long transcontinental river system, draining from the rising Transantarctic Mountains into the Amundsen Sea. Much of West Antarctica hence lied above sea level, but low topographic relief combined with low elevation inhibited widespread ice sheet formation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Vergence‐accommodation conflicts (VAC) occur in near‐eye displays when the binocular disparity of the 3D rendered content (vergence) does not match the display focal distance (accommodation). VAC has been shown to reduce perceptual image quality, cognitive performance, and oculomotor coordination. In this study, we aimed to investigate the impact of VAC on visual performance in augmented reality (AR). Specifically, we quantified the impact of AR VAC on the 'Time to Focus' (TTF); when the user switches focus between real‐world content and world‐locked AR‐rendered content. Our results show that TTF increases exponentially with VAC. The increase is more pronounced at closer vergence distances in displays with a focal distance of 1 D or longer. Finally, we showed that VAC may have a differential effect across age groups; specifically, older users may be affected more in closer focal and longer vergence distances. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

AbstractIn times of rising group-focused enmity and toxic polarizations between conflicted groups worldwide, a differentiated debate about the transgenerational complexities of German and Jewish posttraumatic entanglements of identity is needed. This article focuses on one specific and limited clinical phenomenon: the “adoption” by a few people in Germany of a Jewish identity that is not present in their own biography. An introduction to the phenomenon from clinical practice is followed by a brief historical and social contextualization, as well as theoretical models of explanation for the adoption of a potentially oppressed minority status. With reference to theories on social trauma and its transgenerational transmission to both victims and perpetrators, the psychoanalytic examination of a single case is used to develop the thesis that posttraumatic Jewish identity confusion and constructions are to be understood not only as an individual variant of “false-self,” but also as a form of transgenerational repercussion of the social trauma of the Shoah. The antioxidant power of quercetin‐3‐O‐glucuronide (miquelianin) has been studied, at the density functional level of theory, in both lipid‐like and aqueous environments. In the aqueous phase, the computed pKa equilibria allowed the identification of the neutral and charged species present in solution that can react with the ⋅OOH radical. The importance of post-CCSD(T) corrections as high as CCSDTQ56 for ground-state spectroscopic constants ( $ D_e $ D e , $ \omega _e $ ω e , $ \omega _ex_e $ ω e x e , and $ \alpha _e $ α e ) has been surveyed for a sample of two dozen mostly heavy-atom diatomics spanning a broad range of static correlation strength. While CCSD(T) is known to be an unusually felicitous 'Pauling point' between accuracy and computational cost, performance leaves something to be desired for molecules with strong static correlation. We find CCSDT(Q) $ _{\Lambda } $ Λ to be the next 'sweet spot' up, of comparable or superior quality to the much more expensive CCSDTQ. A similar comparison applies to CCSDTQ(5) $ _{\Lambda } $ Λ vs. CCSDTQ5, while CCSDTQ5(6) $ _{\Lambda } $ Λ is essentially indistinguishable from CCSDTQ56. A composite of CCSD(T)-X2C/ACV5Z-X2C with [CCSDT(Q) $ _{\Lambda } $ Λ – CCSD(T)]/cc-pVTZ or even cc-pVDZ basis sets appears highly effective for computational vibrational spectroscopy. 3D printing technologies have matured to produce complex structures, still they are often limited to static materials. Introducing alkoxyamine bonds into 3D printed structures offers unprecedented possibilities for post‐synthetic modification through nitroxide exchange reaction and nitroxide‐mediated polymerization. This study provides a comprehensive molecular and macroscopic characterization of 3D‐printed alkoxyamine‐containing dynamic covalent adaptable networks. As a response to the problem of evil, the free will defense proposes that evil might exist as a consequence of God's endowing human beings with moral freedom which we have tragically misused. Standard versions of the free will defense assume that (1) our moral freedom began in this earthly existence and (2) what explains our suffering in this world must constitute an abuse rather than a right use of our moral freedom. However, there is another variation of the free will defense that does not share these assumptions. This version of the free will defense appeals to the pre-existence of the human soul. Here I consider a premortalist free will defense according to which each human soul might have rational concourse with God prior to the start of her earthly career and during which she might choose the sort of life she is to live on earth, complete with all of the trials and difficulties necessary to develop a certain kind of desirable character. Purpose: The focus on treating patients with Menière's Disease (MD) lies on the reduction of vertigo attacks and the preservation of sensory function. Endolympathic hydrops is considered as an epiphenomenon in MD, which can potentially be altered by endolymphatic sac surgery (ESS). Purpose of the study was to investigate the influences on vertigo control through manipulation of the perilymphatic system with or without ESS. Methods: Retrospective data analysis of 86 consecutive patients with MD according to current diagnostic criteria after endolymphatic sac surgery alone (ESSalone; n = 45), cochlear implantation (CI) alone (CIalone; n = 12), and ESS with CI (ESS + CI; n = 29), treated at a tertiary referral center. Main Outcome Measures: vertigo control, speech perception pre- and postoperatively. Results: Gender, side, and preoperative treatment were similar in all groups. Age was younger in the ESSalone-group with 56.2 ± 13.0 years (CIalone = 64.2 ± 11.4 years; ESS + CI = 63.1 ± 9.7 years). Definitive MD was present in all the CIalone, in 79.3% of the ESS + CI and in 59.6% of the ESSalone-patients. Likewise, vertigo control rate was 100% in the CIalone, 89.7% in the ESS + CI and 66.0% in the ESSalone-group. Conclusions: Vertigo control was improved in all three groups, however, superior in groups treated with CI, potentially contributed by the manipulation of both the endo- and perilymphatic systems. A more systematic characterization of the patients with larger case numbers and documentation of follow up data would be needed to evaluate a clinical effect more properly. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

While gatekeeper trainings have demonstrated their effectiveness in appraisals of preparedness, efficacy, and intention to intervene, evidence has been lacking regarding gatekeeper behaviors in real life. The I CARE training aims to increase intervention in real-world situations involving suicidality through informational and experiential learning, enhanced by emotional support and guidance from counseling center facilitators. In mixed-method follow-up assessments, respondents reported utilizing specific skills they learned during the training, noting their ability to listen, ask directly about suicidality, connect others with services, and draw on a variety of supportive resources. Of those who encountered a potentially suicidal student, two-thirds asked the student if they were thinking of hurting or killing themselves; others reported taking preventive actions. Perceived support and gatekeeper outcomes were correlated. The findings affirm the effectiveness of communal efforts to support college students' mental health and suggest ways to enhance effective intervention in actual situations with students in distress. Drier and hotter conditions linked with anthropogenic climate change can increase wildfire frequency and severity, influencing terrestrial and aquatic carbon cycles at broad spatial and temporal scales. The impacts of wildfire are complex and dependent on several factors that may increase terrestrial deposition and the influx of dissolved organic matter (DOM) from plants into nearby aquatic systems, resulting in the darkening of water color. We tested the effects of plant biomass quantity and its interaction with fire (burned vs. unburned plant biomass) on dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration and degradation (biological vs. photochemical) and DOM composition in 400 L freshwater ponds using a gradient experimental design. DOC concentration increased nonlinearly with plant biomass loading in both treatments, with overall higher concentrations (>56 mg/L) in the unburned treatment shortly after plant addition. We also observed nonlinear trends in fluorescence and UV‐visible absorbance spectroscopic indices as a function of fire treatment and plant biomass, such as greater humification and specific UV absorbance at 254 nm (a proxy for aromatic DOM) over time. DOM humification occurred gradually over time with less humification in the burned treatment compared to the unburned treatment. Both burned and unburned biomass released noncolored, low molecular weight carbon compounds that were rapidly consumed by microbes. DOC decomposition exhibited a unimodal relationship with plant biomass, with microbes contributing more to DOC loss than photodegradation at intermediate biomass levels (100–300 g). Our findings demonstrate that the quantity of plant biomass leads to nonlinear responses in the dynamics and composition of DOM in experimental ponds that are altered by fire, indicating how disturbances interactively affect DOM processing and its role in aquatic environments. Fire can lead to transitions between forest and grassland ecosystems and trigger positive feedbacks to climate warming by releasing CO2 into the atmosphere. Climate change is projected to increase the prevalence and severity of wildfires. However, fire effects on the fate and impact of terrestrial organic matter (i.e., terrestrial subsidies) in aquatic ecosystems are unclear. Here, we performed a gradient design experiment in freshwater pond mesocosms adding 15 different amounts of burned or unburned plant detritus and tracking the chronology of detritus effects at 10, 31, 59, and 89 days. We show terrestrial subsidies had time‐ and mass‐dependent, non‐linear impacts on ecosystem function that influenced dissolved organic carbon (DOC), ecosystem metabolism (net primary production and respiration), greenhouse gas concentrations (carbon dioxide [CO2], methane [CH4]), and trophic transfer. These impacts were shifted by fire treatment. Burning increased the elemental concentration of detritus (increasing %N, %P, %K), with cascading effects on ecosystem function. Mesocosms receiving burned detritus had lower [DOC] and [CO2] and higher dissolved oxygen (DO) through Day 59. Fire magnified the effects of plant detritus on aquatic ecosystem metabolism by stimulating photosynthesis and respiration at intermediate detritus‐loading through Day 89. The effect of loading on DO was similar for burned and unburned treatments (Day 10); however, burned‐detritus in the highest loading treatments led to sustained hypoxia (through Day 31), and long‐term destabilization of ecosystem metabolism through Day 89. In addition, fire affected trophic transfer by increasing autochthonous nitrogen source utilization and reducing the incorporation of 15N‐labeled detritus into plankton biomass, thereby reducing the flux of terrestrial subsidies to higher trophic levels. Our results indicate fire chemically transforms plant detritus and alters the role of aquatic ecosystems in processing and storing carbon. In temperate, boreal and arctic soil systems, microbial biomass often increases during winter and decreases again in spring. This build-up and release of microbial carbon could potentially lead to a stabilization of soil carbon during winter times. Whether this increase is caused by changes in microbial physiology, in community composition, or by changed substrate allocation within microbes or communities is unclear. In a laboratory incubation study, we looked into microbial respiration and growth, as well as microbial glucose uptake and carbon resource partitioning in response to cooling. Soils taken from a temperate beech forest and temperate cropland system in October 2020, were cooled down from field temperature of 11 °C to 1 °C. We determined microbial growth using 18O-incorporation into DNA after the first two days of cooling and after an acclimation phase of 9 days; in addition, we traced 13C-labelled glucose into microbial biomass, CO2 respired from the soil, and into microbial phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs). Our results show that the studied soil microbial communities responded strongly to soil cooling. The 18O data showed that growth and cell division were reduced when soils were cooled from 11 to 1 °C. Total respiration was also reduced but glucose uptake and glucose-derived respiration were unchanged. We found that microbes increased the investment of glucose-derived carbon in unsaturated phospholipid fatty acids at colder temperatures. Since unsaturated fatty acids retain fluidity at lower temperatures compared to saturated fatty acids, this could be interpreted as a precaution to reduced temperatures. Together with the maintained glucose uptake and reduced cell division, our findings show an immediate response of soil microorganisms to soil cooling, potentially to prepare for freezing events. In 2022, the Camden Coalition Medical-Legal Partnership began providing civil and criminal legal services to substance use disorder patients at Cooper University Health Care's Center for Healing. Malvidin, one of the six most prominent anthocyanins found in various fruits and vegetables, may possess a wide range of health-promoting properties. The biological activity of malvidin and its glycosides is not entirely clear and has been relatively less frequently studied compared to other anthocyanins. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the relationship between the structural derivatives of malvidin and their anti-cholinergic and anti-inflammatory activity. The study selected malvidin (Mv) and its two sugar derivatives: malvidin 3-O-glucoside (Mv 3-glc) and malvidin 3,5-O-diglucoside (Mv 3,5-diglc). The anti-inflammatory activity was assessed by inhibiting the enzymes, specifically COX-1 and COX-2. Additionally, the inhibitory effects on cholinesterase activity, particularly acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE), were evaluated. Molecular modeling was also employed to examine and visualize the interactions between enzymes and anthocyanins. The results revealed that the highest inhibitory capacity at concentration 100 µM was demonstrated by Mv 3-glc in relation to AChE (26.3 ± 3.1%) and BChE (22.1 ± 3.0%), highlighting the crucial role of the glycoside substituent at the C3 position of the C ring in determining the inhibitory efficiency of these enzymes. In addition, the glycosylation of malvidin significantly reduced the anti-inflammatory activity of these derivatives compared to the aglycone form. The IC50 parameter demonstrates the following relationship for the COX-1 enzyme: Mv (12.45 ± 0.70 µM) < Mv 3-glc (74.78 ± 0.06 µM) < Mv 3,5-diglc (90.36 ± 1.92 µM). Similarly, for the COX-2 enzyme, we have: Mv (2.76 ± 0.16 µM) < Mv 3-glc (39.92 ± 3.02 µM) < Mv 3.5-diglc (66.45 ± 1.93 µM). All tested forms of malvidin exhibited higher activity towards COX-2 compared to COX-1, indicating their selectivity as inhibitors of COX-2. Theoretical calculations were capable of qualitatively replicating most of the noted patterns in the experimental data, explaining the impact of deprotonation and glycosylation on inhibitory activity. It can be suggested that anthocyanins, such as malvidins, could be valuable in the development of treatments for inflammatory conditions and Alzheimer's disease and deserve further study. While shame and embarrassment have received significant attention in philosophy and psychology, cringe (also sometimes called ‘vicarious embarrassment’ and ‘vicarious shame’) has received little thought. This is surprising as the relatively new genre of cringe comedy has seen a meteoric rise since the early 2000s. In this paper, I aim to offer a novel characterization of cringe as a hostile social emotion which turns out to be closer to disgust and horror than to shame or embarrassment, thus disclosing ‘vicarious shame’ and ‘vicarious embarrassment’ to be misnomers. The closing part offers an explanation as to why cringe and cringe comedy in particular have become recently more relevant: cringe allows one to express hostility and disgust (often at other forms of life) in a nonviolent manner which fits perfectly well within the permissible boundaries of tolerance set up in liberal Western democracies since the second half of the 20th century. Energy recovery and energy storage of the prototype of a novel heat exchanger and energy generation system Due to the effects of the advancing climate change and the resulting demands for a climate‐neutral building stock, it is of great importance to be able to cover a large part of the energy demand by using renewable energies. To this end, a new type of heat storage and energy generation system for buildings is being developed as part of a research project, which aims to generate and store energy in self‐sufficient "energy piles". The aim of the present analysis was to evaluate a first prototype, which was developed and experimentally investigated in the course of the project. The investigation focused on energy generation, energy storage and the duration of discharge of the new system. It was shown that the energy production of the prototype works well and is comparable to existing solar thermal collectors. However, with the support of a building simulation, it was shown that the energy storage is not sufficient to economically cover the entire useful energy demand for the thermal conditioning of an example building by the energy pile. Axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) and regional nodal irradiation (RNI) are the primary causes of breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL). Immediate lymphatic reconstruction (ILR) is a novel surgical procedure that reduces the incidence of BCRL after ALND. The ILR anastomosis is placed in a location thought to be outside the standard radiation therapy fields to prevent radiation-induced fibrosis of the reconstructed vessels; however, there is excess risk of BCRL from RNI even after ILR. The purpose of this study was to understand the radiation dose distribution in relation to the ILR anastomosis. This prospective study included 13 patients treated with ALND/ILR from October 2020 to June 2022. A twirl clip deployed during surgery was used to identify the ILR anastomosis site during radiation treatment planning. All cases were planned using a 3D-conformal technique with opposed tangents and an obliqued supraclavicular (SCV) field. RNI deliberately targeted axillary Levels 1 to 3 and the SCV nodal region in 4 patients and was limited to Level 3 and SCV nodes in 9 patients. The ILR clip was located in Level 1 in 12 patients and Level 2 in 1 patient. In patients with radiation directed at only Level 3 and SCV, the ILR clip was still within the radiation field in 5 of these patients and received a median dose of 3939 cGy (range, 2025-4961 cGy). The median dose to the ILR clip was 3939 cGy (range, 139-4961 cGy) for the entire cohort. The median dose was 4275 cGy (range, 2025-4961 cGy) when the ILR clip was within any radiation field and 233 cGy (range, 139-280 cGy) when the clip was outside all fields. The ILR anastomosis was often directly irradiated with 3D-conformal techniques and received substantial radiation dose, even when the site was not deliberately targeted. Manufacturing programmable materials, whose mechanical properties can be adapted on demand, is highly desired for their application in areas ranging from robotics, to biomedicine, or microfluidics. Herein, the inclusion of dynamic and living bonds, such as alkoxyamines, in a printable formulation suitable for two‐photon 3D laser printing is exploited. On one hand, taking advantage of the dynamic covalent character of alkoxyamines, the nitroxide exchange reaction is investigated. As a consequence, a reduction of the Young´s Modulus by 50%, is measured by nanoindentation. On the other hand, due to its "living" characteristic, the chain extension becomes possible via nitroxide mediated polymerization. In particular, living nitroxide mediated polymerization of styrene results not only in a dramatic increase of the volume (≈8 times) of the 3D printed microstructure but also an increase of the Young's Modulus by two orders of magnitude (from 14 MPa to 2.7 GPa), while maintaining the shape including fine structural details. This article takes Viviana Zelizer's (1985) Pricing the Priceless Child to the new millennium. Zelizer documented the transformation between the 19th and 20th century from an "economically useful" to an "emotionally priceless" child. She observed that by the 1930s, American children were practically economically worthless but invested with significant emotional value. What has happened to this emotionally priceless child at the dawn of the new millennium? Has there been a new transformation in the social value of children, and, if so, what might have such a transformation entailed? To address these questions, we examine overtime trends that point to increasing devotion of resources and time to children's education, a key input in the exceedingly influential human capital theory, which connects investment into children's human capital with their future market value. Therefore, we argue that the priceless child 2.0 is a useful-to-be human capital investment child. We use four empirical examples of overtime growth in children's human capital investment: (a) enrollments in early childhood education, (b) federal spending on early education, (c) federal spending on K-12 programs, and (d) parental spending on child care, education and extracurricular activities. Surface engineering of metal–organic framework nanoparticles (MOF NPs), and enabling their post‐synthetic modulation that facilitates the formation of bio‐interfaces has tremendous potential for diverse applications including therapeutics, imaging, biosensing, and drug‐delivery systems. Despite the progress in MOF NPs synthesis, colloidal stability and homogeneous dispersity—a desirable property for biotechnological applications, stands as a critical obstacle and remains a challenging task. In this report, dynamic surfaces modification of MOF NPs with polyethylene glycol (PEG) polymer is described using grafting‐from PEGylation by employing nitroxide‐mediated polymerization (NMP) and inserting arginylglycylaspartic acid (RGD) peptides on the surface via a nitroxide exchange reaction (NER). The dynamic modification strategy enables tailoring PEG‐grafted MOF NPs of the type UiO‐66‐NH2 with improved colloidal stability, and high dispersity, while the morphology and lattice crystallinity are strictly preserved. The interaction of PEG‐grafted MOF NPs with human serum albumin (HSA) protein under physiological conditions is studied. The PEG‐grafted colloidal MOF NPs adsorb less HSA protein than the uncoated ones. Therefore, the described approach increases the scope of bio‐relevant applications of colloidal MOF NPs by reducing nonspecific interactions using NMP based PEGylation, while preserving the possibility to introduce targeting moieties via NER for specific interactions. Scholars often characterize local action to mitigate climate change as a puzzle. No locality's greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) are sufficiently large to materially affect climate change; cities that reduce their emissions will therefore bear the costs of doing so, while deriving few climate benefits. This Article analyzes why New York City has taken on the task of reducing GHGs, and the evolution of its policies in the first two decades of the 21st century. This Article argues that the city's initial climate measures imposed few costs on private actors and were largely linked to the traditional local government objective of promoting economic growth. In contrast, the city's move in 2019 to impose legally binding requirements on local building owners to decarbonize their buildings portend material costs and cannot easily be explained in economic terms. These building mandates arose from the work of committed policymakers inside city government and the city council, and the grassroots activism of community groups motivated to oppose President Trump and his stance on climate change. With a new, more real estate-friendly mayor in office and a difficult economic climate in the city, there is uncertainty about whether the city will enforce the building mandates. However, federal and New York State actions since the city passed its building mandates in 2019, such as the federal Inflation Reduction Act and state-led electricity decarbonization, may reduce the costs to building owners of lowering building emissions, and therefore increase the political and economic viability of New York City's building mandates. In sum, the history of New York City's decarbonization efforts emphasizes the potential for local action to address climate change and the difficult political economy of such action. Purpose: Disturbance of cochlear microcirculation is discussed as final common pathway of various inner ear diseases. Hyperfibrinogenemia causing increased plasma viscosity is a possible factor for a critical reduction of cochlear blood flow that might lead to sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSHL). The aim was to determine the efficacy and safety of drug-induced defibrinogenation by ancrod for SSHL. Methods: Double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, multicenter, parallel group, phase II (proof-of-concept) study (planned enrollment: 99 patients). Patients received an infusion of ancrod or placebo (day 1) followed by subcutaneous administrations (day 2, 4, 6). Primary outcome was the change in pure tone audiogram air conduction average until day 8. Results: The study was terminated early due to slow recruiting (31 enrolled patients: 22 ancrod, 9 placebo). A significant improvement of hearing loss was registered in both groups (ancrod: − 14.3 dB ± 20.4 dB, − 39.9% ± 50.4%; placebo: − 22.3 dB ± 13.7 dB, − 59.1% ± 38.0%). A statistically significant group-difference was not detected (p = 0.374). Placebo response of 33.3% complete and 85.7% at least partial recovery was observed. Plasma fibrinogen levels were reduced significantly by ancrod (baseline: 325.2 mg/dL, day 2: 107.2 mg/dL). Ancrod was tolerated well, no adverse drug reaction was of severe intensity, no serious adverse events occurred. Conclusion: Ancrod reduced fibrinogen levels that support its mechanism of action. The safety profile can be rated positively. Since the planned number of patients could not be enrolled, no efficacy conclusion can be drawn. The high rate of placebo response challenges clinical trials for SSHL and needs to be considered in future investigations. Protosteloid amoebae are a paraphyletic assemblage of amoeboid protists found exclusively in the eukaryotic assemblage Amoebozoa. These amoebae can facultatively form a dispersal structure known as a fruiting body, or more specifically, a sporocarp, from a single amoeboid cell. Sporocarps consist of one to a few spores atop a noncellular stalk. Protosteloid amoebae are known in two out of three well‐established major assemblages of Amoebozoa. Amoebae with a protosteloid life cycle are known in the major Amoebozoa lineages Discosea and Evosea but not in Tubulinea. To date, only one genus, which is monotypic, lacks sequence data and, therefore, remains phylogenetically homeless. To further clarify the evolutionary milieu of sporocarpic fruiting we used single‐cell transcriptomics to obtain data from individual sporocarps of isolates of the protosteloid amoeba Microglomus paxillus. Our phylogenomic analyses using 229 protein coding markers suggest that M. paxillus is a member of the Discosea lineage of Amoebozoa most closely related to Mycamoeba gemmipara. Due to the hypervariable nature of the SSU rRNA sequence we were unable to further resolve the phylogenetic position of M. paxillus in taxon rich datasets using only this marker. Regardless, our results widen the known distribution of sporocarpy in Discosea and stimulate the debate between a single or multiple origins of sporocarpic fruiting in Amoebozoa. Simple Summary: The udder health of sows is most important to raise healthy piglets. The aim of the study was to investigate a possible advantage of infrared thermography and ultrasonography over the clinical examination of the udder of sows. For this purpose, both clinically healthy sows with inconspicuous udders on palpation before and after birth (n = 35) and sows at the time of weaning (n = 107) were examined. Images of thermography and ultrasound revealed no pathological alterations in the clinically healthy sows. A physiological statistically significant increase in the udder surface temperature and the thickness of the parenchyma during the three weeks ante partum was observed. After weaning, abnormalities in the appearance of roundish nodules of the parenchyma were detected sonographically in 10.3% of the examined sows, while the demonstrated nodules were unrecognised clinically in two out of eleven sows. The changes could also be demonstrated thermographically because of a statistically significant lower surface temperature above the nodules compared to the remaining skin of the mammary gland. However, scratches on the udder skin showed similar temperature changes. Therefore, thermographic images without prior inspection of the udder can lead to misinterpretation. The aim of the study was to examine whether the use of infrared thermography and ultrasonography can complement or replace the clinical examination of the sows' mammary glands for pathological alterations. Sows of different parities with inconspicuous udders on palpation before and after birth (n = 35) and sows at the time of weaning (n = 107) were examined. Thermal images were taken from both sides of the udder, while ultrasound pictures were taken from four sides of the respective mammary glands. Within three weeks before birth, a statistically significant increase in the average surface temperature of the glands of about 1.54 °C and of the thickness of the parenchyma of about 1.39 cm could be observed. After weaning, in 10.3% of the examined sows, roundish hyperechogenic nodules were detected sonographically in the glands´ parenchyma. The average skin temperature above the nodules was 1.24 °C lower compared to the total skin area of the altered complex. However, scratches on the udder skin showed similar temperature changes. In two sows, the nodules remained undetected during the clinical examination. Purpose: In children and adolescents, preoperative planning for a semi-implantable bone conduction device (SIBCD) is crucial. The geometric changes of the new version of a common SIBCD should enable a higher rate of successful implantation due to its flatter actuator. Thus, this radioanatomic study compared the rate of successful implantation of both device versions at the traditional mastoidal localization and two alternative sites, retrosigmoidal, and parietal, and investigated parameters helping to estimate the feasibility. Methods: A retrospective analysis of 136 CT scans of 0 to 20-year-old patients, evaluation of demographic parameters, radioanatomy, and assessment of head diameter was conducted. The feasibility was investigated for certain age groups at three implantation sites. Prediction of feasible implantation by means of different parameters was calculated. Results: A significant higher implantation rate was observed with the new device for all three sites and age groups. The age group of 6–8 years (n = 19) had most striking differences with a 58.1% rate of successful implantation with the new device without spacer (80% with spacer) at the mastoidal localization, whereas none with the old implant. Head diameter was identified as the most predictive parameter regarding all implantation sites (mastoidal: p = 0.030; retrosigmoidal: p = 0.006; parietal: p < 0.0001), age for the mastoidal (p < 0.0001) and retrosigmoidal (p < 0.0001), and gender for the parietal site (p = 0.001). Conclusion: The geometric changes of the actuator lead to a higher rate of successful implantation in all age-groups and all three localizations with reducing the requirement for spacers. Parameters age and head diameter might aid in estimating the rate of successful implantation in young patients and may be a novel tool to assist in the decision-making process for a SIBCD. • The online School Readiness Parenting Program (SRPP) offered an efficacious early intervention. • SRPP effectively reduced externalizing behaviors. • SRPP effectively improved parenting behaviors. Although the efficacy of online administration of behavioral parent training (BPT) programs is well-established, such programs address a single risk factor (behavioral functioning) for school readiness difficulties (comprised of academics, cognitive skills, and social, emotional, and behavioral functioning). The current study aims to examine the feasibility, acceptability, and efficacy of a telemedicine delivery of the School Readiness Parenting Program (SRPP), an integrative adaptation of PCIT designed to address the behavioral and academic domains of school readiness. The present study takes the first step towards validating an online administration of the SRPP as a treatment for early childhood disruptive behavior. Data were collected for 64 children ages 2–6 years (Mage = 4.63, SD = 0.86; 78.1% Hispanic/Latinx) and their families, who received either in-person administration of time-limited PCIT (PCIT-TL; n =30) or online administration of SRPP (n =34). A series of repeated measures ANOVAS were conducted to examine within and between group effects. Results revealed that both SRPP and PCIT-TL significantly reduced inattention (d 's = −0.54 to −0.88), aggression (d 's = −0.55 to −1.06), and behavioral symptomology (d 's = −0.55 to −0.85) and produced significant gains in parental skills (d 's = −1.47 to 2.99). Notably, online SRPP demonstrated greater improvement in positive parental verbalization, whereas PCIT-TL demonstrated greater reductions in parental stress. Shocks linked to climate disasters are increasingly understood as intertwined with inequities, devastating livelihoods, exacerbating food insecurities and impacting migration economies. Yet there is often a lack of sustained and situated attention to how these – and diverse secondary and tertiary shocks – are experienced in relation to gender and class inequalities, other social differences and underlying forces shaping differentiated mobility-related challenges over time. Divergent experiences and histories of shocks are often simplified, with (im)mobility-related struggles misunderstood or only abstractly represented. Amid these concerns, this article explores the 'mobilities turn' in climate disaster research, focusing on experiences articulated by people along the Zimbabwe-Mozambique border, examining multiple impacts of climate disasters and changing dynamics of (im)mobility converging with pandemic shocks and interrelated political and socio-economic struggles. In this region, impacted by one of the world's most severe tropical cyclones in recent memory, we explore the embeddedness of shocks in dynamic political-economic landscapes and life trajectories. Part of a multi-method 5-year project, we focus on stories where articulations around mobilities, translocal connections and mobility disruptions, including from COVID-19, call for carefully understanding socio-economic ties and histories, land alienation and access inequities, mutating meanings of borders, and factors intensifying economic insecurities amid increasingly severe and frequent climate shocks. Objective: As part of a larger community-based, service-driven research project, the primary purpose of this pilot randomized study was to examine the feasibility and acceptability of delivering time-limited adaptations of parent–child interaction therapy (PCIT) and child–parent psychotherapy (CPP) within a sample of children experiencing homelessness. The secondary goal was to examine the promise of both interventions in improving parent/child outcomes. Method: One hundred forty-four young children (18 month–5 years old; Mage = 3.48, SD = 1.09; 43.1% female; 78.5% Black/African American; 27.1% Hispanic) and their mothers were recruited from a women's homeless shelter and randomly assigned to 12 weeks of either PCIT or CPP delivered by shelter clinicians on-site. Attendance, fidelity, and program satisfaction were obtained. Families completed pre- and postintervention assessments, including observational data on maternal verbalizations during a child-led play session. Results: Both time-limited PCIT and time-limited CPP were successfully implemented with similarly high levels of intervention fidelity (>90%) and satisfaction by mothers (85%). Completion rates were similar across both time-limited PCIT (76.6%) and time-limited CPP (71.4%). Both time-limited CPP and PCIT resulted in decreases in children's posttraumatic stress, parental stress, and increases in maternal positive verbalizations. Only time-limited PCIT resulted in significant improvements in externalizing behavior problems in children and reductions in maternal negative verbalizations. Conclusions: Time-limited PCIT and CPP are acceptable, feasible, and hold significant promise for helping families within a homeless shelter environment and by extension, other transitional and/or shelter environments. A full randomized trial is warranted to determine which program may offer a more effective intervention. Letters of recommendation (LORs) are a required and heavily considered component of fellowship applications.[1] However, the subjectivity and potential bias of traditional LORs limits their reliability for differentiating applicants and predicting fellowship performance.[2],[3] In 2017, the Alliance of Academic Internal Medicine (AAIM) published guidelines for standardized LORs (SLOR) for internal medicine (IM) program directors (PDs), consisting of: 1) residency program description 2) performance in each of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)'s six core competencies (patient care, medical knowledge, interpersonal/communication skills, systems-based practice, practice-based learning/improvement, and professionalism), 3) scholarly contributions, 4) personal characteristics, and 5) overall assessment.[2] Fellowship PDs report higher satisfaction with the guideline-based SLORs than traditional LORs.[3] However, no studies have examined SLOR content to determine the frequency with which PDs adhere to the recommended components, and it is unknown whether there was uniform guideline adoption. This study sought to 1) quantify guideline adherence of SLORs written for applicants to the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC)'s pulmonary/critical care and critical care medicine fellowships and 2) identify whether certain IM PD or residency program characteristics were associated with differences in adherence. While prior LOR studies have predominantly focused on applicant characteristic-related biases,[6] this study examined whether specific PD/program characteristics were associated with differences in guideline adherence and, therefore, potential for bias. Purpose: Treatment of Menière's Disease (MD) comprises an array of both non-destructive and destructive treatment options. In patients who are therapy–refractory to non-destructive medical treatment, endolymphatic mastoid shunt surgery (EMSS) is both recommended and debated controversially. The aim of this study was to investigate safety in terms of hearing, vestibular function, complication rate, and efficacy with regards to vertigo control of EMSS in patients with MD according to the current diagnostic criteria of 2015. Methods: Retrospective analysis of 47 consecutive patients with definite or probable MD with description of demographic parameters, pre- and postoperative MD treatment, pre- and postoperative audiometric (pure tone audiometry) and vestibular (caloric testing) results. The parameters were compared between patients with and without postoperative vertigo control. Results: 31/47 patients (66.0%) had improved vertigo control postoperatively. Postoperative hearing and vestibular preservation were predominantly stable. No significant differences between patients with improved vertigo control and patients with no change or worse vertigo episodes were found. In the treatment refractory group, 4 patients required a revision EMSS and 6 a destructive MD treatment (5 gentamicin intratympanically, 1 labyrinthectomy). No peri- or postsurgical complications were reported. Conclusions: EMSS was found to be beneficial in two thirds of the patients with definite or probable Morbus Menière and a safe procedure regarding hearing and vestibular preservation with no postoperative complications. Diverse memorials of the Nazi-engendered Holocaust are legion in today's world. They sustain a sense of painful heritage for that genocide's survivors and their descendants while also providing ethical and political lessons and reminders for present and future generations. While the historical record provides evidence of many other massacres, some of them genocides, those committed by European colonialism in particular have been only minimally memorialised or monumentalised; and scant literature exists about the pain they have caused or the consequent, often unspoken, legacy of their victims' and their descendants' long-term suffering and marginalisation. This often results in little substantive, "formal" memorialisation available for mobilisation in efforts to effect recognition for those who have so suffered and, ultimately, to effect restitution for them and their descendants. The article uses present-day South African examples to illustrate the consequences, in an already profoundly divided society rife with identitarian thinking, of how such unequal memorialisation reproduces persisting senses of colonial suppression and exacerbates structural impediments to achieving social justice and equality. This study investigates the relationship between take-home (open-book) examinations (THE) and in-class (closed-book) examinations (ICE) on academic performance and student wellbeing. Two social science courses (one bachelor and one master) were included in the study. In the first cohort (2019), students from both courses performed an ICE, whereas students in the second cohort (2020) performed a THE. Four to six months following course completion, students were approached to fill out a survey pertaining to their academic performance and wellbeing during the course, and to complete a test measuring knowledge retention on the course materials. No significant differences were found between the ICE and THE cohorts in academic performance and knowledge retention for either the bachelor or the master students. Bachelor students who completed a THE in 2020 reported significantly lower wellbeing in comparison to their peers completing the ICE a year earlier. Objectives. To ascertain whether and how working as a partnership of two World Health Organization collaborating centres (WHOCCs), based respectively in the Global North and Global South, can add insights on "what works to protect healthcare workers (HCWs) during a pandemic, in what contexts, using what mechanism, to achieve what outcome". Methods. A realist synthesis of seven projects in this research program was carried out to characterize context (C) (including researcher positionality), mechanism (M) (including service relationships) and outcome (O) in each project. An assessment was then conducted of the role of the WHOCC partnership in each study and overall. Results. The research found that lower-resourced countries with higher economic disparity, including South Africa, incurred greater occupational health risk and had less acceptable measures to protect HCWs at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic than higher-income more-equal counterpart countries. It showed that rigorously adopting occupational health measures can indeed protect the healthcare workforce; training and preventive initiatives can reduce workplace stress; information systems are valued; and HCWs most at-risk (including care aides in the Canadian setting) can be readily identified to trigger adoption of protective actions. The C-M-O analysis showed that various ways of working through a WHOCC partnership not only enabled knowledge sharing, but allowed for triangulating results and, ultimately, initiatives for worker protection. Conclusions. The value of an international partnership on a North-South axis especially lies in providing contextualized global evidence regarding protecting HCWs as a pandemic emerges, particularly with bi-directional cross-jurisdiction participation by researchers working with practitioners. This paper deals with Wittgenstein's rule‐following paradox, focussing on the infinite rule‐regress as featured in Kripke's Wittgenstein on Rules and Private Language. I argue that one of the most salient and popular proposed solutions (championed by John McDowell), which argues that rule‐following is grounded in "custom," "practice" or "form of life, remains unsatisfactory because part of this proposal is the rejection of further "theory" (commonly attributed to Wittgenstein) which seemingly makes it impossible to substantiate the claim of how customs, practices or forms of life ground rule‐following. I argue that this conundrum can be solved by introducing Wilhelm Dilthey's overlooked notion of objective spirit as the objectivated sediment of historical human communality. This proposal allows us to substantiate Wittgenstein's hints at the connection between rule‐following and customs, practices, and forms of life without introducing "problematic theories." Combining Wittgenstein's views with Dilthey's notion of objective spirit results in a solution that is neither skeptical nor straight, but therapeutic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Lookism refers to discrimination based on physical attractiveness or the lack thereof. A whole host of empirical research suggests that lookism is a pervasive and systematic form of social discrimination. Yet, apart from some attention in ethics and political philosophy, lookism has been almost wholly overlooked in philosophy in general and epistemology in particular. This is particularly salient when compared to other forms of discrimination based on race or gender which have been at the forefront of epistemic injustice as a topic of research. This paper argues that lookism is associated with various forms of epistemic injustice. In the specific case of lookism, hermeneutic injustice takes the shape of the taboo of acknowledging that unattractive people are unattractive. This, on the one hand, results in a hampered understanding of one's own situation insofar as one is deterred from seeing one's looks as one major factor for one's social position. On the other hand, this hermeneutic injustice serves as the backdrop of instances of a special kind testimonial injustice in which the ugly person's burgeoning realization that their looks influence their social standing detrimentally is discounted due to the pejorative nature of ascribing someone the property of being unattractive or ugly. Objective: There is no consensus for the method of aneuploidy screening in pregnancy. Cell free DNA (cfDNA) is the most sensitive screen for trisomies 21, 13, and 18, however the first trimester screen (FTS) is a marker for other adverse outcomes, such as structural anomalies, growth restriction, and preeclampsia. In 2019, we offered FTS (nuchal translucency (NT) and analytes) with or without cfDNA. The purpose of this study was to assess clinical relevance of abnormal FTS in women with normal cfDNA. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed women undergoing screening in our Fetal Evaluation Unit in 2019. Women included had normal cfDNA and abnormal FTS; consisting of NT >95%, PAPP-A < 0.4 MoM, beta-HCG >2.5 MoM, or overall increased risk of trisomies. Results: 195 patients had abnormal FTS and normal cfDNA. 41 (21%) had adverse maternal outcomes including hypertension, abnormal placentation, and placental abruption. 34 (17%) had adverse fetal outcomes including growth restriction, structural anomalies, fetal demise, polyhydramnios, previable PPROM, necrotizing enterocolitis after a preterm birth, and a balanced translocation. Conclusion: Abnormal FTS predicts adverse outcomes in 33% of women with normal cfDNA. Our data suggests that offering universal FTS with cfDNA may have clinical benefit. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A novel and versatile shape memory ink system allowing 4D printing with light at the macroscale as well as the microscale is presented. Digital light processing (DLP) and direct laser writing (DLW) are selected as suitable 3D printing technologies to cover both regimes. First, a system based on monofunctional isobornyl acrylate and two crosslinkers consisting of a soft and a hard diacrylate is identified and proven to be compatible with both printing techniques. Employing DLP, a large variety of structures exhibiting distinct complexity is printed. These structures range from simple frames to more demanding 3D geometries such as double platform structures, infinity rings, or cubic grids. The shape memory effect is demonstrated for all the 3D geometries. Excellent shape fixity as well as recovery and repeatability is shown. Furthermore, the formulation is adapted for fast 4D printing at the microscale using DLW. Importantly, the 4D printed microstructures display remarkable shape memory properties. The possibility of trapping and releasing microobjects, such as microspheres, is ultimately demonstrated by designing, smart box‐like 4D microstructures that can be thermally actuated—evidencing the versatility and potential of the reported system. The pathogenesis of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)—a disorder of gut-brain interaction that affects up to 10% of the world's population—remains uncertain. It is puzzling that a disorder so prevalent and archetypal among humans can be explained by disparate theories, respond to treatments with vastly different mechanisms of action, and present with a dazzling array of comorbidities. It is reasonable to question whether there is a unifying factor that binds these divergent theories and observations, and if so, what that factor might be. This article offers a testable hypothesis that seeks to accommodate the manifold theories, clinical symptoms, somatic comorbidities, neuropsychological features, and treatment outcomes of IBS by describing the syndrome in relation to a principal force of human evolution: gravity. In short, the hypothesis proposed here is that IBS may result from ineffective anatomical, physiological, and neuropsychological gravity management systems designed to optimize gastrointestinal form and function, protect somatic and visceral integrity, and maximize survival in a gravity-bound world. To explain this unconventional hypothesis of IBS pathogenesis, referred to herein as the gravity hypothesis, this article reviews the influence of gravity on human evolution; discusses how Homo sapiens imperfectly evolved to manage this universal force of attraction; and explores the mechanical, microbial, and neuropsychological consequences of gravity intolerance with a focus on explaining IBS. This article concludes by considering the diagnostic and therapeutic implications of this new hypothesis and proposes experiments to support or reject this line of inquiry. There is an unresolved stand-off between ontological naturalism and phenomenological thought regarding the question whether normativity can be reduced to physical entities. While the ontological naturalist line of thought is well established in analytic philosophy, the phenomenological reasoning for the irreducibility of normativity has been largely left ignored by proponents of naturalism. Drawing on the work of Husserl, Heidegger, Schütz, Stein and others, I reconstruct a phenomenological argument according to which natural science (as the foundation of naturalization projects) is itself a part of the essentially normative life-world to the effect that ontological naturalism faces a bootstrapping problem. I aim to demonstrate that this stand-off is grounded in a deep disagreement about the possibility of reduction. I close by arguing that this deep disagreement turns on the question which conception about the nature of (natural) science is true. This result pits a perfectionist model of science (implied by ontological naturalism) against a pragmatist conception of science (in favour of the phenomenological argument). The motivation is that transforming the disagreement about the controversial principle into a disagreement about conceptions of science may help to offer a foundation for different attempts at solving the stand-off. Chemical recycling of plastic waste has promise as a complementary technology to increase eco‐efficiency of plastics life cycles. Accumulation of impurities in feed streams can affect sensitive compounds such as the Ziegler–Natta catalyst systems commonly used to produce polyolefins such as high density polyethylene (HDPE) and linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE). In a poison study, the influence of impurities—more specifically NO and N2O—on the catalyst system are investigated comprehensively in terms of kinetic behavior and activity rates. A product composition analysis gives insights into product properties such as molecular weight distribution (MWD), comonomer composition distribution (CCD), melting point, and crystallinity. By applying known modeling techniques (kinetic modeling, MWD, and CCD deconvolution modeling), information beyond analytical data is obtained. The results of the study show that both poisons significantly affect catalyst kinetics and reduce catalyst activity. N2O influences primarily the MWD, while NO poisoning strongly affects the CCD of LLDPE samples. Since the mechanical properties of the polymers produced depend on factors such as MWD and CCD, NO and N2O poisoning may reduce their processability and applicability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

While gatekeeper trainings have demonstrated their effectiveness in appraisals of preparedness, efficacy, and intention to intervene, evidence has been lacking regarding gatekeeper behaviors in real life. The I CARE training aims to increase intervention in real-world situations involving suicidality through informational and experiential learning, enhanced by emotional support and guidance from counseling center facilitators. In mixed-method follow-up assessments, respondents reported utilizing specific skills they learned during the training, noting their ability to listen, ask directly about suicidality, connect others with services, and draw on a variety of supportive resources. Of those who encountered a potentially suicidal student, two-thirds asked the student if they were thinking of hurting or killing themselves; others reported taking preventive actions. Perceived support and gatekeeper outcomes were correlated. The findings affirm the effectiveness of communal efforts to support college students’ mental health and suggest ways to enhance effective intervention in actual situations with students in distress. Dihydroisobenzofuran heterocycle is a structural motif found in a number of medications with anti-tumour, anti-diabetic, and antibacterial activities. It is also found in a slew of natural substances, most notably fungus metabolites, which have been shown to possess credible radical scavenging activity. Density functional theory studies on three different derivatives were conducted to investigate their electronic structures as well as thermochemical and kinetic behaviour against ·OOH, ·OH, and ·OCH3 in biologically relevant solvents, with the goal of elucidating structure–activity relationships and discussing the potential role of the scaffolds as a template for new semisynthetic antioxidants. The importance of resonance and inductive effects, and also hydrogen bonding, has been underlined, but most importantly, it has been demonstrated that all structures have considerable scavenging potential against all studied radicals, with reactions rates close to the diffusion limit. Leber's Hereditary Optic Neuropathy (LHON) is the most common primary mitochondrial DNA disorder. It is characterized by bilateral severe central subacute vision loss due to specific loss of Retinal Ganglion Cells and their axons. Historically, treatment options have been quite limited, but ongoing clinical trials show promise, with significant advances being made in the testing of free radical scavengers and gene therapy. In this review, we summarize management strategies and rational of treatment based on current insights from molecular research. This includes preventative recommendations for unaffected genetic carriers, current medical and supportive treatments for those affected, and emerging evidence for future potential therapeutics. More precisely, for the Kadison transitivity theorem, we prove that for any nonzero irreducible representation (ℋ , π) of a C ∗ -algebra and n ∈ ℕ , there exists a continuous function A : X → such that π (A (x , y)) x i = y i for all i ∈ { 1 , ... , n } , where X is the set of pairs of n -tuples (x , y) ∈ ℋ n × ℋ n such that the components of x are linearly independent. Versions of this result where A maps into the self-adjoint or unitary elements of are also presented. Regarding the GNS construction, we prove that given a topological C ∗ -algebra fiber bundle p : → Y , one may construct a topological fiber bundle () → Y whose fiber over y ∈ Y is the space of pure states of y (with the norm topology), as well as bundles ℋ → () and → () whose fibers ℋ ω and ω over ω ∈ () are the GNS Hilbert space and closed left ideal, respectively, corresponding to ω. When p : → Y is a smooth fiber bundle, we show that () → Y and ℋ → () are also smooth fiber bundles; this involves proving that the group of ∗-automorphisms of a C ∗ -algebra is a Banach Lie group. In service of these results, we review the topology and geometry of the pure state space.
